Jimi is a legend so people are often going to have an emotional reaction to covers. It's like trying to sing a Whitney Houston song. I'm willing to bet though that Jimi would love to hear a variety of different takes on his work. He was a creative genius and I think he would appreciate others interpretations.
Jimi was always very supportive of other guitarists. He didn't really see himself as a great guitarist. He just wanted to play great new music, and he did. If you do something new with Jimi's songs, I'm certain that he'd be pleased, because he was always striving to play something new and different. You have embraced the very nature of Jimi's music. 👍👍👍
The backlash comes from people who aren't artists, but consumers of "product" or "content" - While I appreciate you taking the time to patiently educate and explain, it is not needed - Your artistry and passionate light shine through for all who CAN see ✌️❤️🎸💥🔥
Funny how people get mad if it's not exactly like the original, you're just improvising. There's nothing wrong with improvising, you're just doing your own version. 😀I really love your own version of that song. Great video!
Nice explanation, Helen. I think people get hung up on the popular recording of a song but they don't realize that even the original artist probably only played it that way once. Every live version is different, otherwise they would go crazy. So it makes sense that someone covering the song puts their own spin on it. 😎
Improvising any coversong is a good way to express your own feelings and interpretation how you experience it...keep on going beautiful ant talented Helen....respect! 🤗
Wow "some people..." I loved your cover and especially that you didn't try to copy Jimi's version (we can find thousands of those people every day). And speaking of "Jimi's version" which one???; even he changed it up often... it's the mark of truly creative musical generous.
I do appreciate you and your willingness to share and play the music as you feel it in your heart and as a musician you are not to try to be someone else but just be yourself and love the style you have created for yourself. Thank you and always be yourself.
Jimmy was so down to earth and so amazingly talented. We really lost something special way too soon. The music he would have created. I think he would be humble, very supportive and encouraging.
Your 💯 percent right! You are one of most versatile Guitarest I’ve come across You are an amazing guitarist who I love to watch & pick-up on how you play, you give us all inspiration 😊 Your one of the Best!
I absolutely appreciate your cover songs, Helen! I can hear what parts of the original you are relating to and how you are trying to express more than what the original piece is mirroring in your heart. It's why I Love hearing / seeing your videos! 🎶❤🎶Don't stop!! You got heart Woman!! I LOVE it!
I love your observation that songs can be tied to a memory. When I hear certain favorite songs, I can pull up that memory of first hearing the song and remember exactly the mood, the feeling, and the place and time. Example...as a kid, beautiful summer day, traveling along the toe of the Sierra Nevada's headed for Susanville, window half down, and on the radio comes Nat King Cole...Ramblin Rose...I was mesmorized. But I agree with you Helen, an artist can use her style to add beautiful color to and existing song.
First of all you should remember that Jimi Hendrix did not write Hey Joe, he too only did a cover of it. The original by Billy Roberts sounds WAY different, Hendrix just happened to do the version that is most popular to this day. I totally love your version, you put so much of your personality in it, by now you've definitely found your own style and there is absolutely no reason not to show what you can do. It would be boring to just listen to another Hendrix imitation. You've got some very good points here. If audiences expect cover bands to play everything like the original, for a musician who has a creative urge this can get very frustrating, I've experienced that myself a couple of times. Anyway, just keep on being you!
It is an honour as a listener to be able to hear how a piece of music is heard by someone else filtered through their playing. It's as close as one human can come to actually getting inside another person's head and hearing how they hear. Being let in like that, trusted as a listener to hear what touches someone else's heart and soul in a beloved piece of music is special, precious and magical, and incredibly generous on the part of the artist to share with the listener. Thank you for your playing, and your giving. And, I'm just gonna say it - I like your interpretation better than the original. 💖
Indeed Helen the best way to keep classic tunes alive & fresh is for a artist to put there own personal touch on it! no matter how many different ways you play it the song will always sound like the original classic song! love your version 🙏🎼🌻👠🖤
It doesn't matter how a person redo a song as long as it's good. Every musician is different do you're not going to get the same thing from different musicians that's why music is so beautiful because everyone has their own way of feeling a song and they reflect that in the way they perform a song I love how Helen does her renditions of the music she is playing ❤ ♥ 💗 😊. Thank you Helen for sharing what you do with us and PLEASE keep doing what you're doing ....my friend 😊.
And to all the 50 years of hip hop it has shown us how much you can change the style of music just by a ideal of sampling and most people have no idea what songs they are using to make their music. I was not a fan of hip hop until I took the time to listen and learned a lot about making music from the heart and Jimmy is a big part of hip hop.
I am blessed to live in an area that has a huge variety of wild flowers, and I love it when I find a different flower. Music, is the same ,variety is what makes life interesting. If everything was done the same life would be boring.....I loved your take on a great song, keep up the great work you do, and thank you.
Love it. And Jimi is my ❤. Looking forward to watching more of your videos. I love your understanding of what a cover is, everything you said, and keeping the song, (as well as the artist) alive. Thank you so much.
“I would play it the exact same way” man I love that. People who aren’t musicians don’t understand that everyone that picks up an instrument sounds different.
Brilliant Explanation. Jimi Appreciated So Many Other Guitarist And Their Styles That He Considered Himself Lesser Than Them, EvenThough Those Same Musicians Considered Him A Great. His Versatility Is What Made Him Great, And Thus Yours Does And Will Make You A Great! My/Our Ears Hear You And Feel You Helen! Soooooo THANK YOU!!!
Your covers are so good because you’re brave enough to bring something new to these classic standards that’s exciting to hear. Don’t mind the haters, keep up the outstanding work! 🤘🏽🎸✌🏽
Helen, as soon as you put your hands on a guitar it's magic❤ you should be able to put your own spin, flavor or style to whatever cover your playing. Like I said, when you start to play guuuurl!!! Magic, simply magic 🎉keep doing your style your way❤
Helen Ibe, you're living in our mind everyday... Your Focus it's more important for everyone. Be always well and take my speciall regards for your ALL family.
keep going, you are special. i grew up in the 50s 60s i know the music of that period, saw many concerts in honolulu. you are great in your presentation, thank you very much
do you Helen. I come here to listen to your playing. Even Hendrix didn't play songs or sing them exactly the same every performance. You are a talent in your on right.
Most importantly you keep his music alive you keep the blues alive I'm a big hendrix fan and it's people like you keep that keeps real music alive I love it God bless keep doing what your doing.
In my opinion, you are exactly correct! A cover song by my definition is for the artist to “make the song their own”. Annie Lennox does it very well, as you do. If I wanted Jimi’s version I’d play it. I am the person who asked if you could cover a Marc Knofler song for that very reason.
Ms Helen, you should play what you feel (as you do already). "All Along the Watchtower" is a good example. I read long ago that when Dylan heard Jimi's version he said something like "yeah, that's what I wanted it to sound like". An example I can give is a late 60s pop song by a group called "The Archies", "Sugar, Sugar". Wilson Pickett did a version and turned a bubblegum tune into a soul ballad. Covers are ok for a tribute band, but an artist can offer a new point of view to another artists's work. Play on!
Great interpretation Helen, as always !! I wonder what people would have said on the social networks (if they existed) of the Jimi Hendrix’s interpretation of Sargent Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band that Jimi Hendrix did, compared to the original…
Two types of covers, those done by technicians that are technically correct, and those done by artists that are done with artistic interpretation. You are an artist : )
Helen, I just watched this video and I couldn't agree more to what you said ❤ I totally admire Jimi Hendrix for his innovative approach of playing. But playing his songs exactly like he did, is not just impossible it also doesn't make any sense trying to do so. When Jimi played the music of other artists - Dylan, Muddy Waters, the Beatles or who ever - he was never ever trying to copy anything. It was always about playing the way HE felt the song. So to me, playing it YOUR way is simply the only way that makes sense if you want to appreciate his approach to music. Btw. I simply love watching your videos and I can see hear and feel your love for music when you're playing. Thank you sooo much for doing and sharing it ❤❤❤❤
My dear Helen , I haven't read all of the comments per say , but I doubt anyone has mentioned that when Jimi him self covered a song it sounded nothing like the original , please ignore negative comments, you are amazing, keep it up XXX
I made a playlist of cover songs, almost each one is very different from the original, and that's why I like them. That playlist includes your cover of 'Lady in Red' which I love. You just keep on doing things your own unique way, Helen!
Hey Helen! As much as I enjoy Jimi Hendrix's music, and as much as I enjoy hearing his influence in YOUR sound, let it be known that I much MORE prefer that YOU be YOU. (...Hendrix will always be Hendrix, and that's alright, too! 😁)
Practically every single artist does a cover version of their own songs. The day Hendrix recorded and released this song it becomes the version we all love, but after that Hendrix would have nearly always played it differently. Deep Purple did smoke on the water, great song on the Machine Head album, the live Made in Japan version is a lot different, a cover of the original done in a different way. I love covers, SRV has a version of Little Wing, same feel but different. Do your own thing, you will never please everybody, it doesn't matter, neither did the great Jimi Hendrix but he did well. Thanks for the great playing an awesome smile, you always make a grey day happy
Thank you for showing a new dimension of yourself and your artistry Jimi would be in love with you And I'm sure he would invite you to play along with him❤❤❤
I encourage you in what you do because sometimes you bring a very good touch in the covers you do! It's like the song Slow Dancing in a burning Room by jhon Mayer, you're the first to play it very well and you bring good arrangements to it
Strike 4 Jimmy Hendricks himself was brutality criticized when he initially performed the National entom at the Woodstock Festival only to be praised for it decades later...got my point right!!?
Helen: You do what you do. And, he would fall in love with you, as the rest of us have. You are amazing! Hendrix is as well, however his time has passed ( unfortunately). Love you, Helen!
Good on you Helen - you're a great guitarist - I feel like those negative comments weren't really worth a video but I'm glad you made it anyway and I enjoyed hearing your thoughts
If Jimi were alive he'd be like HELP! GET ME OUT OF THIS BOX!!! HELLO??!!! I'm sorry people are like that. If they want to hear it how Jimi played it, they should just put the album version on. Shoot I felt like I was being a weirdo complimenting the dress! Honestly musician to musician you're 100% correct talking about musicians making choices and they will be different because we are all different. Total respect for how kind you were in talking about it. I'd likely have told a lot of folks where to go and how to get there. 😬 For what it's worth I'm sending positive vibes and wishing you many blessings. Thanks for making the world better just by being you and sharing your talent (and impeccable style sense) with us on the RUclipss!
You have an amazing collection of guitars . I think I see you using a different one almost every video. Is there anyway you can do a tour of your guitar collection, I would love to see it.
Great vid van Helen, I wear a Jimmy hendrix hat in my vids I bought the patch from Jimmy hendrix guitar players son. Alot of history it's the black hat I wear
Very articulated response You are the very smart in how you handled the feedback. I have been following your work for over a year and you are exceptionally talented I don't want to listen to a cover song that sounds exactly like the original volume. If you people watch how winners are selected in talent shows then you can understand. If a competitor does not put a spin on the original version they are rejected. Winners always add a spin to the copy and yet the song remains what it. No one who has copied the songs Hendricks, Michael Jackson, Bob Marley and the rest have ever done it the same Helen your talent is rich so keep going. Criticism make you stronger and sometimes needed for a true balance . They are doing you a favor. And always remember that critics sometimes get lost in their world of jealousy and negativity that brings out the insanity in them ❤
Play it as you hear it. Hendrix’s version was a cover of the original song put out by an LA band called leaves, and was written by folksinger Billy Roberts, who copyrighted the song in 1962.
You don’t owe anyone an explanation. Music is an expression of the self regardless of the inspiration. Pretty soon, you will be someone’s inspiration in their own music.
You play you young lady. I love jimi and I love SRV and I love you. You all play your style. And it’s all great!!! Some people gotta criticize everything! I think you’re awesome!! That’s my critique!
Helen do it your way, do it right are wrong people are going to talk, you can't please everyone. Don't worry about the they sayers. I love to hear you sing and play. ❤❤
Jimi is a legend so people are often going to have an emotional reaction to covers. It's like trying to sing a Whitney Houston song. I'm willing to bet though that Jimi would love to hear a variety of different takes on his work. He was a creative genius and I think he would appreciate others interpretations.
I only heard her oversell herself, no music at all, it SUCKED!!! 😵❤
@@DarleneLangley-rv2mu I think this comment is more about you being unhappy than her playing. Hope things get better for you.♥
You are the next generation, and you are helping to keep his music alive, keep doing what you're doing!

One of my favourite songs. I play it my way too. It doesn’t sound like yours, it doesn’t sound like Jimmy, it sounds like me playing Hey Joe.
I encourage you in what you do because sometimes you bring a very good touch in the covers you do! It's like the song Slow Dancing in a burning Room by jhon Mayer, you're the first to play it very well and you bring good arrangements to it

You simply nailed it here! thank you Ms. Ibe. You are as gorgeous as you are smart and insightful.
You do You.....music is all about expression from your soul. I choose to think JH would be honored to hear your version......😊
Don't worry Helen. haters are going to hate no matter what. You do you and keep going forward. Most of us enjoy the way you make the songs your's!
I have always said that anyone can replicate a great guitar part with enough practice, but an artist creates their own.
You do you, they wish they could play as well as you. And Jimi would love it.
Keep doing your thing, Helen!
Thank you! Will do!
I agree with you.....that's a mature perspective.
Before I learned to play well, I copied Helen’s style until developing my own individual style. So THANK-YOU Mz. Ibe.😎
Rock on!
My baby please don't mind them. You are not a copycat! You are still one of the best. Please, keep playing. Igbokwenu!

All haters young lady. Keep on doing what you are doing. You are a rare gem with a very special gift.

Critics will criticize, haters will hate but it all makes you stronger 💪.

You’re just fine. Keep doing you.
Helen do it your way, do it right are wrong people are going to talk, you can't please everyone. Don't worry about the they sayers. I love to hear you sing and play. ❤❤
