We are witnessing a different Xu Xin in this tournament. This is the World Cup version of Xu Xin, not the typical World Tour version. Focused, determined, with the desire to win and bring pride to his country. Normally, in world tour events, Xu Xin is arrogant, likes to play around, maybe even childish. But this Xu Xin right here did NOT wanna lose against Harimoto. He wanted to remain the only CNT member who is yet to be beaten by TH at all cost. Not arrogant, not childish. Just ice cold, determined and dominant. THAT'S the Xu Xin I want to see!
Nive1337 definitely he played amazing today. If he didn't he would have lost. He was focused and energetic. I could watch these two play 100 sets. They both played incredible.
Should also give some credit to Harimoto, he made really nice blocks against Xu Xin's spinning loops that many players could not block that close to the table like Harimoto can
Xu Xin vs Harimoto contest is typical (spin vs speed) confrontation, which shows winning for spin-oriented playing in this match . Earlier Harimoto won Zhou in quater final. Harimoto has fantastic speed of action and ball feeling. His touches are very confident and sensitive. His strongest feature is the ability to switch playing hand from backhand-forehand-backhand-forehand. But Harimoto is still lag in producing topspin, especially forehand topspin in rallies. His tactic is continuously switching ball direction left-right-center-stomach-left-right to force opponents to move. But Xu Xin often leaves far from table before the starting of rallies to have enough time to react and to find to produce strong topspins, which create unforced errors from Harimoto. By that way of strong topspins, Xu Xin forces Harimoto to go far from the table, where Xu Xin dominates with his extreme topspins. But Harimoto often chooses to stand closer to table and accepts to make more unforced errors. Xu xin has ability to realise his right choosen tactics, and clearly wins. Earlier in the quater final, against Harimoto, Zhou Yu step by step followed the style of Harimoto, so Zhou time by time made less topspins. Zhou became stay closer to table and have not enough time to effective spin balls, and fall in the rhythm of hit/block/counter with continuous switching ball direction and less spin. In this woman style, of course Harimoto is absolute king with his nature phenomenal reaction.
Yes. In this game particular, Harimoto had so many forehand smashes that went over the table. If he was able to but some more topspin in, he whould have hitten more. His flips are allready world class.
For top players like Xu Xin, Ma Long and Fan Zhendong, the biggest pressure to play against Harimoto is the age difference since they will be criticized for losing to a 15 yrs boy if they lose. Other than that, they should be able to beat Harimoto comfortably if they just play their game well. Harimoto is a super talent but he isnt at the level of the world top players yet.
Edgar M I bet it will make a lot of sense if you are the one who is in that situation. Of course you need cool head to win matches. But it is a different mental game of playing against a comparable opponent than playing a 15 yrs old wonder kid. Playing against a comparable player only has the performance pressure but playing against a really good 15 yrs old kid will have both performance pressure and the pressure of being humiliated. Your mental state is different when it's ok to lose than when it's a humiliation to lose.
There is no reason to feel humilated by losing to a 15yo table tennis player if you are mature enough to acknowledge him as a brilliant tt player FZD, ML and XX are critized for losing to EVERY other player that is non-chinese and non-CNT It is clear that Harimoto lacks consistency and experience to get to a greater mental level, but his gamestyle is above the one from CNT and any other players Assuming that his wins over ML and FZD and maybe other top players like Timo Boll etc. only derive from his opponents having a weak mentality and being afraid to lose to a "kid" is ridiculous
Nik krau Easier said than done. Even if you acknowledge him, it is still a pressure there for you to cope with. It will partially making your task more difficult or more different for you to deal with. Imagine that you are one of the best players in your circus where people look up to you and then a young kid suddenly show up and beat you. You still have to acknowledge him but you definitely would still feel an uneasiness. Having a great fighting mental doesnt mean you dont have to deal with the uncomfortable of playing against a kid. And I'm not dressing it as the whole reason that cause them to lose to Harimoto but it is definitely one of the biggest pressures that they had and will have to deal with. They also could just have a bad day or so. But certainly, its a different mental aspect when your opponent isnt a 15 yrs old kid.
Fun fact: every time Harimoto loses a point I give a victory yell. I could almost tolerate some yelling when he makes a great shot but yelling when your opponent makes an error is low class.
they say he has an outdated style but he is the only one who remains unbeaten by the player who arguably has the most modern style of them all. take that flat hitters!
jghfk1 it's really a fallacy that Harimoto is a flat hitter. He doesn't do many slow arching loops from three feet back. But he's still putting as much topspin as possible without sacrificing speed. Occasionally he hits an obvious flat hit but it's rare. Seemed like his forehand was more powerful this tournament. He's still growing. Xu xin really came out ready to play today.
Well done for xuxin come back. And hiramoto done a good job too, given so much pressure to China team. And I think he doesn't need to be ashamed, as he is so young n talented with huge potential, and already proven himself the top tier players in the world. even defeated by xuxin, it's quite normal, and nothing to be shame of
XX has improved soooo much!! Who could say that, in their first face to face, Harimoto got to lead the match 3 x 1... But eventually lost. But now, the boy is still playing quite stunningly, and even so, doesn't stand a chance against Cloud Walker.
XX seemed to have found some weaknesses in Harimoto's style (something we have not seen very much of!) and really prevented him from playing his game. It looked like he was having great success with his serves; Harimoto rarely made a successful first attack
For sure the Harimoto style of play has been studied in depth by the Chinese. Harimoto still has problems with the forehand, the power of his forehand is not yet competitive with the Chinese team. It seems he still has a "kid" game. Usually, in China the boys have a style very similar to that of Harimoto because they have not yet developed the power and speed necessary to get away a little from the table and become the topspin machines. (The same thing happened with Fan Zhen Dong in 2013 at the Chinese national games, when he was almost 17 years old, he had a style very similar to that of Harimoto then over time he changed moving away from the table and playing more power loops.) Now Harimoto if he does an inside-out with his forehand he can not cover the opposite corner of the table and has serious difficulties when playing on his forehand. I wonder if he will grow and develop power, muscles and speed his style change slightly or it will remain the same. I think it will change slightly over time.
XX, like Maze and Kreanga is always a pleasure to watch.. he will never win a WC because of his style and the fact that the chinese know him too well.. but will be missed when retires..
How was the audience able to disrupt the game so often? Conversing loudly during gameplay of the semis is just asinine. Who is in charge of telling them to stfu or leave? Stunned that the nearby watchers did not police the situation themselves.
You two must not be pong players then... A loud cho is all a part of the game, no matter the intensity. You either have thick skin in table tennis, or you must gtfo...
High level does not mean high sportsmanship anymore with all annoying screams. Xu gave him a good lesson in humility that harimoto may or may not learn.
+Ricardo Murillo Unfortunately some people never learn. Michael Maze is a player who sometimes gets angry but manages to keep it under control but you have other players like Chen Weixing and Bastian Steger who are constantly angry and on edge. Hopefully the screaming boy does not grow up to be like them
Xu Xin made awesome blocks, flicks and of course deadly topspin in this world tour. Sometimes he pulled of a strong RPB which surprises me but most of his weak RPB is easy to counter and exploit.
6:37 Xu xin moves after Harimoto's push, and still fast enough to take 2 full steps to make that gigantic angle possible. fucking unreal speed and footwork
This kid is learning very bad manners...that shouting is not only distracting but also disrespecting towards the senior players. But this kid has very fast and powerful shots.

Saw venue Melbourne on screen. Harimoto has all the fabulous/basic skills for a competent player but needs to stay cool during the match. Screaming is OK at the end of winning but not throughout the whole match. This has nothing to do with establishing himself in this circuit (he doesn't need it), something that he might not realize at his young age. XX played this match with 100%, no doubt. It makes me wonder if top Chinese players are occasionally told not to win, for unknown reasons.
Harimoto's weaknesses are being studied as he plays more, but that does not mean he is not learning too and very quickly at that. It is only a matter of time now and the trolls are not going to stop him how ever hard their hearts desire.
Great game. Xu Xin will always be one of my favorite players

Nive1337 definitely he played amazing today. If he didn't he would have lost. He was focused and energetic. I could watch these two play 100 sets. They both played incredible.
I think his aim is Tokyo, not the tour.
Should also give some credit to Harimoto, he made really nice blocks against Xu Xin's spinning loops that many players could not block that close to the table like Harimoto can

Every time I watch Harimoto play, I wish the ITTF would enforce a rule of no excessive screaming.
I can only watch Harimoto with the sound off, can't stand his pathetic shouting.

Great match! Xu Xin had an answer to the menacing Harimoto.

Harimoto will be out of commission for a few tournaments because of excessive back stress
ben parness really?! Where did u read that?
Thanks for cutting off Harimoto’s screams!
XX is the man.
anyone know what xu xins new blade is
Saw venue Melbourne on screen.
I love Art tt Xuxin
please hook up microphone to this kid
Its been the kryptonite of the high motivating kid is the Cloud Walker!
Best backhand in the world vs best forehand in the world
6:26 Xu Xin said I am done and I will be winning now
Xu xin was prepared for harimoto skills....
why i fookin’ happy when harimoto “chore machine” lose?
I love Harimoto
thanks god XuXin win,i just hate this kid's screaming,it's very annoying.
Harimoto's weaknesses are being studied as he plays more, but that does not mean he is not learning too and very quickly at that. It is only a matter of time now and the trolls are not going to stop him how ever hard their hearts desire.
Open Kimono we will see then, you think those chinese players won't improve?
great to see xx play like this again. dont be too hard with harimoto, he is still a kid.
Harimotos flips are crazy fast.
経験も体力も精神も足りてない年齢で、多少調子が悪くてもこれだけ戦えるのであれば、何ら悲観することはない
nice match.
I miss you ma long
