  • During Coney Island's final season in 1971, a preview center for Kings Island was set up on the midway featuring a model replica of the new Kings Island, as well as a short film showing guests what would make this new park so special (this is that film!). Take a look at some of the groundbreaking and construction process from 1970-1972.
Taft Broadcasting purchased Coney Island amusement park (Cincinnati, OH) in 1969 in exchange for 174,957 shares of Taft stock, which made the acquisition worth approximately $6.5 million. In doing so, they were planning to move the park just 20 miles north, so that the legacy and future of Coney Island would live on for generations to come. Groundbreaking for this "king-sized" park took place on June 15, 1970. The initiative was led by Gary Wachs, formerly Coney Island's General Manager.
The plan was to make this new park bigger and better. Once Coney Island closed its doors in 1971, work immediately started on transporting rides, plants, and other elements. The Grand Carousel, which turns 95 this year, was one of those original rides.
The idea was ambitious, and boy did it pay off. A whopping 1,600 acres of land in Warren County was purchased after Roy Disney, Walt Disney's brother, consulted with the park during planning and recommended buying fives times as much land as they thought they needed. Realtor George Henkle and nearby farmers sold the land to Taft for approximately $3.2 million.

It’s nice seeing the original workers and hearing how excited they are to build the park. I hope they’re still alive to see it today!

I would be cool if Kings Island would put the model on display if they still have it.

Very interesting to see how the park was when it opened. And all that uncleared land by the Racer where Area 72 is now

Great memories of watching the park come together. I've been searching for the video of the Kings Island 1976 Bicentennial Celebration from July 4th that aired on CBS and hosted by Ed McMahon. I saw it when it aired in 1976 and again from a 1 inch tape that Kings Island Live Shows Department had. Would love to view it again. Please check if it may be found in the park's archives. Thanks !

I visited old coney as a kid. I loved it. Then they built King's Island and I took my own kids for years. Hate to hear of the violence that is starting to break out. Supposed to be a family entertainment place.
