Meet Gimball, a Collision-Tolerant Drone

  • Опубликовано: 4 июл 2015
  • We get a demo of Gimball, an RC multi-rotor that is designed to withstand collisions. The quad itself is housed in a protective sphere, moving freely inside of it using a gimbal system. The idea is that it can fly and bump around in environments too difficult to reach by humans for remote inspection operations.

    That is a fantastic design.
I can see countless situations where you'd want a drone that can fly through confined and enclosed areas.

This way of tackling drone impact resistance is a gamechanger. Also, the outside sphere could be used as a platform for other means of transportation, like rolling. Remote activation? Fly it into big red buttons. Might even have a nice game element ready to market with that. New type of e-sport?

      Behemothokun
It is how the media has demonized we as fliers trying to coin the word "drone" when people that know nothing about these items think of them as the same "drones" used by the military. It scares the ignorant. In my state the senate tried to ban them based on fears they knew nothing about. This was at least a year before someone flew on on to the the White House lawn.
Even after months of telling my dad they are not even close to the same thing when I finally went to him and flew over his house a few times and finally got they are no where near the same thing. It is like people that think the AR in AR-15 stands for "Assault Rifle" when the term "Assault Rifle" wasn't even invented until 30 years after the AR-15 was created.
It is a dangerous slope to be using such terms with the same terms as the military when the two items, be it the multirotor("drone") or the AR-15(M-16..."Assault Rifle), that are really not the same at all. Only people that study said items know that each item is vastly different from the other. But by the media (News,Social,Vloggers) use these terms people will jump the the wrong conclusion. Kind of like if were to call Prius a Forumla-1 car. I mean they both have 4 wheels and move from point A to point B but indeed are vastly different.

Yea it is a big topic here where states are banning any unmanned radio control aircraft. It was very close in my state but when my group found out about it we made a pretty big stink over it. I hear it is a big issue in New Zealand as well. As we are basically saying knowledge is power just wish more people had the knowledge and that media stopped trying to get views by scaring people.

I'd say 2hs isn't really that crazy. The best current state of the art drones can last around 20 minutes. We just need 5X efficiency/storage improvement. Aluminium batteries are told to be able to charge in a matter of minutes (single digit). So we aren't that far me thinks. ^_^

logitech4873 Some take offence to the word "drone" because they believe it has a negative connotation, and often instead prefer "multirotor". Judging by the usage of "drone", it'll continue gaining popularity as propagated by its evoking perception and simplicity as a word, while the suspected negative connotation fades. Personally, I think "drone" sounds catchy and badass whereas "multiroter" sounds a bit childish, but whatever.
