Wow! Great work figuring this out, Chris. Based on this, I have pulled down my video until I can verify whether my unit was affected. I don't want to show results from a defective vTX that doesn't reflect the real world performance of the unit.
I really like your range test videos because I do my testing very similarly. HDzero really keeps confusing me, because there is not a huge difference in penetration if I compare the freestyle vtx v1 at 1 W with the whoop lite vtx at 200 mW. I suspect that either my freestyle vtx is not really having 1 W output power or the whoop produces significantly more output power. I am not sure what it is.

@@BumbleBeeFPV At 1w its 5x more power and with RF to double the range you need 4x the power. No matter how much line of sight open range HDzero gives you it doesn't help with multi pathing and interference when flying around obstacles. One thick tree is enough to full screen rainbow HDzero at 1w.

Wow... What the heck those screws are doing? They're screwing the VTX! 😬 (Sorry, I couldn't resist the joke!) Anyway, thanks a bunch for testing, Chris!!! Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Why the adapter for update cable, and it's not even included?? Why is the securing of the antenna made of plastic? Great work with the form factor, but the rest makes me want to just quit HDzero now. Update cable was fiddly before, but now it's even worse lol...
Are you going to explain to us how loosening screws boosts output power this much (or at all)? And how we would know for sure that if we get a unit it isnt affected?
Great review Chris. My biggest comment, I have been using this VTX for a couple months now in testing pre-production units, and I 100000000% feel that this VTX unfortunately should never be run decased, the stacking pin connectors connecting the two boards are not going to have a long life once the reinforcement of the heat spreaders sandwiching them is no longer an added benefit. Will GREATLY shorten the life span of this hardware.
I think if you use rigid spacers between the boards and a nut on either side you should be able to keep things secure. I agree that a flex connector would be better.
It’s surprised that these power outputs are so high and reviewers had this weird screw issue. I really hope the massive power outputs you got after loosening the screws isn’t an anomaly for reviewers
I was waiting to get one of these until i saw some testing on its actual performance. Glad its all testing proper 1w output power. Keep up the awsome work!
3:01 high Chris I’ve been told by Divimath that the vtx should be powered by 9v bec or 4s only VCC with capacitor. What’s your thoughts? Do you think it will be ok to use a 16v bec direct from fc?
there's some issues with the manufacturing of hdzero vtxs, with the og 1w vtx I've seen that the performances and temps gets WAY better when you clean it and apply thermal paste more generously
@@miquelmarti6537 Thanks, I just read on the discord HDZero forum that the heat sink was machined in error and the RF is grounding out to the heat sink. I am a fan of HDZero and as long as there’s an explanation of what happened and it’s fixed no big deal.
The VTX is capable of maximum 1W RF output at R1 channel if unlocked with license or approval from the local authorities. (taken from their website) So is the production unit ship "LOCKED" ?

Power really doesn’t mean much, especially comparing against different systems. This VTX with its nearly 1.4W of power on R1 compared to a vista at the 200mW setting likely have the same performance. Range wise when the Avatar 1S 350mW board first came out I tested it long range against the 1200mW vista, cranked, and signal integrity and range was WAY better on the 350mW board. It’s honestly all over the place in my experience. Even so, I fly HDZero 60% of the time, so it definitely has it’s place.
I feel bad that the Hdzero vTX had this defect. I have pulled down my video until I can test whether my vTX was affected by this issue. I'm really grateful to Chris for putting in the time building up his lab and discovering results like this.
Do we have a similar pehnomenon with analogue vtxs too? Also, I always thought R8 was good because it was just outside of the wifi range, but if the power is reduced, maybe not so?
So how can I mount it, I don't use tape, I want to use 20x20 screws, but if I tighten too much, the power will drop and I won't be able to check it because I don't have measuring tools. Unless my vtx is defective, I don't know
No way you can use this at 1w without the casing. You really should know better then to show something that will result in the vtx's power amp burning up, would it really have been that hard to do a thermal test?
I am waiting for this to be tested. My naked Vista tolerates 1000mW, just need to be flying to keep it cool enough. Hopefully same for this HDZero unit.

Just use a BEC, it’s honestly pretty low effort. And build reliably goes up exponentially. I’m using the Freestyle VTX on an 8S build. I primarily use the Matek 6-30V 5/9V BECs BTW as they are small, cheap, and reliable.
having the power output axis as logarithmic and topping at 10000 is misleading since it hides the difference between channel 1 1.3mw and channel 8 435mw, shame that the data was presented in this way which leans me to think that there was an intention to mask the results...

Vista 1200 mW includes antenna gain. Output into the antenna (what's being measured here) is much lower.
Check out my earlier vtx power testing video. The vista only outputs about 300mW conducted output power.
Can you test please if the power consumption on different channels in consistent? I assume if it is than it's a bad sign...

I'm not sure, but putting mechanical pressure on a chip can affect internal band gap voltage references which could be used to control power levels.

How is someone who doesn't have equipment to test the output power supposed to know for sure whether their vtx2 is underperforming?
Measure the power consumption. Should be 14W on R1 @1W. Also this doesn't affect production units.
