A Big thanks from Australia After replacing the Radiator, Over flow bottle, Radiator cap, belts , Hoses, Water pump, thermostat and housing ....I watched your video and this was the Culprit...Cheers
After watching a dozen videos, this one has been the most informative and helped me identify my problem. Thank you! I jumped the pin 2 with pin 1 and my aux fan turned on for the first time in months! Now that I know what the problem is, I can fix it. Thank you!!
this video shows you how to test the temperature switch, if the fan runs that means the fuse relay and fan are working,. to test the temperature sensor the temperature switch plugs into you remove the temperature sensor from the radiator on this model 3 gaps in the plug means negative earth - positive low speed fan positive speed high fan these 2 positive gaps are open circuit by default if you were to use a multimeter to test continuity of the two positives with he negative it should be open, if you put the temperature sensor in a cup of boiling water for a minute and then test the continuity of the 2 positives and touch the negative the two circuits should now be closed because of the heat if the two positives are still open after being in boiling water then the switch is faulty and needs to be replaced
Thank u 🙏 Jumber thing is good if its emergency just leave jumper cable there let fan to run in full speed just in case Any problem would be with dat ?
This is very helpful. I got my fan to turn on as well. Should the fan turn on between pins 2 and 3? I understand its either high speed or low speed. When I try pins 2 and 3, I can hear the relays click but the fan doesn’t turn on. Is it supposed to work only with pins 1 and 2?
Good video and info....I have a BMW 535I 1989...Where is the fan switch on this model. Same exact spot?..My fan is not coming on and the car starts to run very hot every time I stop at a light for a minute or so...This happened last week when the outside temp was low to mid 80s temperatures.....Thanks again......Philip.
So connect the ground cable and second speed? Does that not cause a short circuit? I have measured with the multimeter and through the signal cables, 12v circulates joining the ground cable, should it not be short-circuited?
Also overcharging the A/C system will cause the aux fan to run at full speed due to the high gas temps generated by overcharging. The temp sensor will tell the aux fan to run full speed trying to cool the freon down to reduce system high pressure. DO NOT overcharge a BMW A/C system.
Thanks for the video. When the temp is at 205 the fan turns on. But the tstat opens at 207. Therefore it never gets the chance to open. So when bleeding the coolant, you can never get the air out of the lower rad hose. Do you agree?
What happens if you do all the test and the fan still does not turn on and you are sure the switch is ok, how do you bypass that switch to test the fan first so that when you test the switch you know you are truly testing the switch with a good fan?
it would be cool to know if the fan comes on during start up? or does it come on when u turn a/c on? also what the resistance would be on the sensor if working. 200deg makes it turn on on your statement. Testing that fan plug dont mean that sensor is bad.It could be other things stopping it from coming on.But thats a good place to start.TNX

Did this to test my fan on my 04 x3, it made a big spark, but the fan didn't come on, am I testing it the right way or or it means that my switch/motor is faulty?
i tried this yesterday and the fan came on and today i put in a new switch but the fan wont come on with ac or temp but still works with a wire any suggestion what the prblm might be?
My question is, this plug should give a signal for low and high speed or only for one speed. for which it has three contacts. on video, when closing 1 and 2, a low or high speed fan turns on. on my car there is an INPA error code 46 electric fan. I do not notice the inclusion of high speed electric fan
Hello my car is overheating slightly after driving it for a while and seems to start overheating when stop or in traffic. The temp gauge goes up to 3/4 sometimes then comes back down to the center. I'm debating if I should change the thermostat or if I need to change the fan switch. the auxiliary does turn one once its hot. Does it have to turn on right away? or only when it reaches a certain temperature? Thank you very much for your help and video Sr.
If you turn the Air conditioning on the fan will turn on intermittently .. this may help you in traffic . The thermostat cost less than the temp switch . Me being cheap .. I would replace what cost the least first . If you have a diagnostic code reader you can watch the temp go . Fan should turn on around 200 f or so. Hope this helps
Russell K I turned rhe ac on today and it did help with not overheating. Thanks for that. I will change the thermostat first then. Also, I think someone ask this already, did you had to drain the coolant out to take the fan switch? Thank you for all your help.
Hi Jkrug, I have same problem, tested my fan like you did, but i cant find switch anywhere can you tell me what it is exact name of a part? I only see switched which are installed on lower hoses, also my switch connector has 3 wires(not 4) and its same shape as yours
hey just tested my fan and it appears the switch is bad. I ordered a new switch but it says "no o-ring included" can I reuse whatever part is on the car? And do I need to flush rad before / during doing this? Great troubleshooting trick btw..
I have an e36 99 323i with m52 engine. I changed the thermostat, water pump, radiator, engine/coolant temp sensor, fan clutch, and hoses. Spend about $400 and it still is over heating. Now it doesn't have a leak, I'm sure of it and the expansion tank is always at normal lever. However I didn't change the aux fan switch and my aux fan is Always on. And I checked for bad head gasket and it's good. Any idea if it might raise temp gauge on cluster due to bad aux sensor?
+Brandon Kennedy I did. I've been driving the car for 2 weeks and before it would over heat after 30minutes. Thanks. I purged the air out the system out of the bleeder screw. Thanks
Please help! My 2012 BMW E70 n55's fan stuck in high. The pump work fine. So when I do the bleeding steps for the coolest, the fan kick in at full speed
I have a 97 BMW 318i I did the same after changing the housing with the thermostat and the sensor for the fan. But now when the fan turns off the car turns off. CAN SOME ONE HELP ME PLEASE....???
honestly,, that kick in fan system is pretty idiotic.. I wonder who was that idiot engineer who invented it. It over heat the engine and eventually it blows your head seals... The old fashioned belt/fan hook up kept the motor at constant temperature.... and those engine lasted almost forever....I got a ford tempo 92 and I will install a manual switch,.,, in order to keep the motor temperature constant..
A Big thanks from Australia

thats briliant mate !!!!
that is the video i was looking for
thank u !!!
awesome video. Just tried your jumper wire idea and sure enough the fan kicked on. thank you for sharing.
I never write comments but you are god.. fixed my headace
Anytime. Thanks for watching!
Very helpful thank you 🙌🏻🙌🏻
This helped me a lot. Thanks
very helpful video... thanks for taking the time and interest to create it
I got a similar issue with my 528i I live in Poughkeepsie as well

did you use anything on the threads of the fan switch when installing? any washers with that? did you torque or hand tight?

98 z3 appears to be similar but I’m thinking one pin is high speed fan and one is low speed fan? Plus the ground.
So connect the ground cable and second speed? Does that not cause a short circuit? I have measured with the multimeter and through the signal cables, 12v circulates joining the ground cable, should it not be short-circuited?
Thank you...I'm replacing the one on my m5. Ill test it first.

Do you have a part number on the electrical connector that you put the jumper into? Mine seems to be too short

Now if this doesn't work, as is with my car, any idea where to look next?
What if the jumper doesn’t turn the fan on? could it be the jumper itself or a relay?

if the fan doesnt turn on by jumping can it also be relay ?
How about m40 is same as m43 a fan switch?
hey just tested my fan and it appears the switch is bad. I ordered a new switch but it says "no o-ring included" can I reuse whatever part is on the car? And do I need to flush rad before / during doing this? Great troubleshooting trick btw..
I wouldn't reuse.. If you do keep a eye on it to make sure it doesn't leak
Thanks for sharing! Please will there be any problem if I ignore the thermostat and turn the fun on always?
Thanks I'm going to try this on my 7.
Hi I have a car X5 model 2004 electric cooling fan keep working even when the car extinguish what is the reason that possible
I am having problem with my BMW E46 the fan is not turning on causing the car to overheat . What would be the problem
So what happened if u got a new sensor switch and the fan doesn't turn on. I've test the fan and it does works.
Same here
Did you have to drain the radiator to change it?
Thank you.
on this car the sensor is high on the tank , so you should drain some out . The drain plug is on bottom of radiator ,, color is blue .
My fan turns on when I start the car and the car is cool? Its loud and bugging me. 2008 bmw 328i any ideas? Thx

you still have air in your system you need to bleed it

What's the name of that part.
Thank you :)
croPatr
how to apply that on x5 2003
Mine does not work even if I try the pin method on the adaptor
Can somebody tell me where this is located on an e46 with manual transmission ?
2003 M54 it is on the lower radiator HOSE. 2001 abd older it is same as video but facing towards the engine
Hi I have got a E90 2007 320D, my cooling fan seems not turning on at all times, help me out please!!!!
Fans should turn on when you put AC on.. Check fuses?
i meant the SENSOR is faulty not the switch
Thank you

+Miguel Morales Fan turns off and car turns off ? That's out of my league.
Thanks anyway
There is no viscous fan. No wonder it overheated.
I replaced the fan switch and it still doesn't turn on the cooling fans..only when I by pass it like the video
Did you manage to fix
I have a 97 328i it's overheating I changed the radiator nd reservoir. and it's still getting way hot can anyone help me plz !
+J Loyal head gasket may be bad .. it was somewhat common , did you change thermostat?
It was thermostat
Check your fan cloth
