  • In this video you can enjoy the cab ride - train driver's view from Bologna to Florence along the Bologna-Florence Railway in 4K/60 frames per second.
    The Bologna-Florence railway is one of the major links in the Italian rail network, connecting the railways of the Po Valley with the railways of Tuscany and central Italy under the Apennines. It is also known as the Bologna-Florence direttissima-"direttissima" is Italian for "most direct". It was Italy's greatest engineering achievement in the first half of the twentieth century. When it opened in 1934 it significantly shortened the old winding Porrettana line over the Apennines via Pistoia, and was made possible by the 18.507 km-long Apennine Base Tunnel. The new Bologna-Florence high-speed railway was opened on 5 December 2009; it includes 73.8 km of tunnels in its 78.5 km length.
    The Apennine Tunnel was the second longest in the world, only 1300 meters less than the Simplon and it is still in the top 20 in the world. It still has an underground station, which is very unusual on a non-urban railway, called Precedenze (Way) station, but it became disused in the 1960s for security reasons and due to lack of traffic.
    Sit Back, Relax, and Enjoy watching this FULL- length scenic rail trip video in 4K quality.
    This Relaxing Video is best watched on a 4K big-screen TV sitting on a cosy sofa or armchair.

    It's a bit dark but at 36:00, exactly in the middle of the Apennine Tunnel, you might see the "Stazione Precedenze".
    It was a real station, equipped with eight simple switches, two English switches, four protective trunks and two shelter tracks for trains that gave way (Precedenze means precedence).
    Until 1965 the local trains would even stop here and the locals were using a very long stairway to reach the surface (1900 steps, 1 hour walk time!).
    Now the switches are automate and the shelter tracks are abandoned, but the "Stazione Precedenze" sign should still be visible and illuminated, at least it was last time I passed through the tunnel as a passanger (some years ago). They even told me that the
    bell of the station is still sounding before a train passes, to alert maintenance personnel.
    I tried to link a page on this comment with the history and pictures of the tunnel and it's station but it was discarded by RUclips. If you want to read more write me and I'll give you the link.

    Grazie davvero ❤❤

    In this base tunnel, there are an ancient passenger station named "precedenze". It Was at the exact middle of the tunnel. When ,in the 50', was active, passengers must do around 900 steps to arrive under at the station. Today, in video, if you see good, you can see something strange in the middle of tunnel and by the train to. I passed here some times and I saw.

    Note: North Entrance of Appennine Tunnel min:31
    In the night between 03/04 August 1974 a bomb placed inside a carriage of the Rome-Munich Express train exploded inside the tunnel causing the death of 12 people and the wounding of 48 others. Luckily the driver managed to bring the train at the San Benedetto val di Sambro station, thus making rescue operations less complex

    Very nice video. Thank You. I think the on-board SCMT equipment had some malfunction. I can't explain all the emergency braking. As it was leaving Bologna, it may be that the engineer did not pre recognize a code absence before the switch, but the others?
    For Italian followers: Credo che l'apparecchiatura di bordo SCMT avesse qualche malfunzionamento. Non mi spiego tutte quelle frenate d'emergenza. Mentre stava uscendo da Bologna, può darsi che il macchinista non abbia pre riconosciuto un'assenza codice prima dello scambio, ma le altre?

    Great video al always. You didn't indicate the category of the train, but I assume that it was a long distance intercity which doesn't enter to Firenze SMN. I have a bunch of questions for those who know the line better (I'm only an occasional traveler in Italy): before the construction of the HS line the speeds were considerably higher (it still looks in good condition and according to the signs the line is still enabled for 175-180 km/h in tunnels) and now the train runs for most of the time at around 110 km/h except for a few moments near Calenzano. Then, I think that Italy must have a serious problem with the system of signalling, as the train (I would expect) with priority is often slowed down or even stopped (also right after departing Bologna). Or is it maybe the consequence of poorly coordinated timetables which let the slower train block the faster one behind it? Or are they deliberately slowing down the trains on this line to convince the passengers that they should take a Freccia?

    • @RailRelaxation
      @RailRelaxation  Год назад +1

      @maxart3392 Thank you for your comment. I am sure there are a lot of viewers that know line better than me that can respond to you.

    • @gerric.5824

      The line is currently being completely refurbished, tunnels are being enlarged and the roadbed is being lowered in order to make the line compatible with the P/C 80 (high cube) loading gauge. Also, new signalling and power supply will be installed. I think that currently there might be a generalized speed restriction because of this work even if the line still has an official top speed of 175-180 km/h (at least in some sections). The opening of the high-speed line meant that long-distance trains on the old Direttissima could be replaced by much needed local or semi-local trains that before couldn't be squeezed in because the line was absolutely full, although some Intercity trains and most night trains still pass through it. Given that local trains too normally run at up to 160 km/h I don't think there isn't any deliberate "political" speed reduction besides restrictions due to engineering works. As for the train being stopped, you may notice that it happens quite abruptly and not necessarily in front of a signal, in fact I have the impression that such stops are triggered by the train protection system that for some reason misses some track beacon, I wonder if it was that specific train that was faulty. Poor timetable coordination might happen, especially if there is some traffic disruption and/or a train is late, but in that case you would see lots of yellow and red lights, not automatic brake applications...

    Can anyone tell me why the train was brought to a halt right at the Tuscany/Emilia Romagna border in the tunnel. I may have seen some yellow coloured signals but no red ones. How did the driver know to resume? The second halt near the south entrance was obvious due to the red danger signal.

    • @gerric.5824
      @gerric.5824 Год назад

      The one in the middle of the tunnel seems to be an automatic brake application started by the on-board ATC/PTC system. The line is being thoroughly refurbished and I'm wondering if there was some mismatch in the data transmitted to the train or if it missed some balise/transponder, maybe a temporary one meant to enforce some speed restriction. Either that or possibly some fault on the train. As far as I know they are pretty sensitive and a minor misalignment could be enough to trigger a brake application. If that's the case, the driver has to go through some steps and then can resume on their own.

      The line is operated under the "Automatic electrical block with coded current" regime. There was evidently a slower train, such as a freight train, occupying the section (block) immediately downstream. Years ago, inside the "Grande Galleria dell'Appennino" there was the famous station called "PRECEDENZE" (precedence) which was connected to the town of Ca' di Landino via a staircase of over a thousand steps and two inclined lifts. It now functions as a "Communication Post" between the odd track and the even track and is remotely controlled by the DCO (Central Operations Manager).

    • @Luigi-uj5ml
      @Luigi-uj5ml Год назад +5

      NB: on this line the automatic electrical lockout is not linked, which means that each intermediate lockout signal (table P which stands for "Permissive") is preceded by an isolated warning signal, i.e. not coupled with the previous one automatic electric lock signal. This explains why the signal in the tunnel went directly from red to green, without first going to yellow, as happens with the automatic chained electrical block.

  • @margaretjones777
    @margaretjones777 Год назад +1

    The most striking thing about these Italian cab-rides is how empty the platforms are. Station after station; and they're completely deserted. If this is any guide to the number of passengers, then the railways must be operating at an enormous loss. It only goes to show that you can have wonderful infrastructure, but if it doesn't provide the journeys that people need to make, then nobody will use it.

    • @RailRelaxation
      @RailRelaxation  Год назад +2

      @margaretjones777 Actually I usually film the videos during the weekends and public holidays and normally there is less people using the trains. Looking at the numbers, lots of people in Italy use trains to commute and also to travel longer distances, with the high speed lines between big cities.

    • @gerric.5824
      @gerric.5824 Год назад +4

      Ridership is actually quite high, even higher than before the pandemic. This train probably ran quite close behind some local service that may have picked up most passengers. Also, since this is a non-stopping service people wouldn't be there just to watch it. Finally, that line is being thoroughly refurbished and there have been quite some service cancellations/substitutions that may have caused a temporary loss of ridership. That said, both Trenitalia and RFI (the network manager) are both making a quite nice net profit so...

    • @margaretjones777
      @margaretjones777 Год назад

      @@gerric.5824 I was so intrigued by your reply that I have researched the matter further and was unsurprised to discover that the situation is more complicated. And so (deep breath)...
      Trenitalia is a partially privatized subsidiary of Italian Railways (FSI), created in 2000, which functions as a "train operating company" in much the same way as the UK rail franchisees - indeed it even owns 30% of the "Avanti West Coast" UK rail franchise, from which it generates a small proportion of its profits. In 2022 Trenitalia made a profit of 120 million Euros, which sounds great until you realize that this is only a very small part of the picture. As in Britain, so in Italy the profitability of franchisees is determined, less by the performance of the company, than by the "tariff" which they pay in order to access the national rail infrastructure. In Italy the government has set this tariff at a generously low level, partly to encourage cheap fares (and thereby increase rail usage) and partly also to provide a healthy return for Trenitalia's shareholders. As I'm sure you will appreciate, the financial performance of Trenitalia tells us little about the true cost of running Italy's rail network because most of this has been shouldered by country's taxpayers. And this is where the sums start to get really nasty.
      A Brussels report, commissioned in 2021, concluded that Italy's railways had cost Italian taxpayers more than 480 billion (that's 480,000,000,000) Euros since Italy joined the Euro in 1993, a truly staggering sum that accounts for almost 20% of Italy's National Debt, itself an eye-watering 160% of GDP, one of the highest in the developed world, and vastly worse than the situation in other major European economies. Now, we can argue as to whether this expenditure has been justified, but there can be no dispute that Italy's debt mountain has had a crippling effect on the prosperity of its citizens. To put this in perspective; since 1993 Italy has grown by 11%, France and Germany by more than 35%, the UK and Spain by more than 45%, the USA and Canada by more than 50%, and Australia by more than 55%. So, yes, Trenitalia is profitable, but the true cost of Italy's railways has been horrific. Those empty platforms are indeed telling us something.

      @@margaretjones777 While the data you reported are correct, let me say they are totally unrelated each other and not able to support the theory that trains in Italy are travelling empty based on an random video.
      In addition to what Geeric above already explained, let's not forget that between the 80 km of rail between Bologna and Firenze there are basically just few mountain villages with a small population, for instance arriving near Firenze suburb (Sesto Fiorentino) you can notice passengers boarding a local train. Anyway let's stick on numbers just click on google "Railway passengers transport statistic" of Eurostat and look at year 2019 as latest reliable data, Italy is the 3rd country as number of passengers/km of rails after France and Germany, Spain follows with a much lower number end then all other countries. Same numbers you can find in Wikipedia where UK is between Germany and Italy. Just have a train trip in Italy either IC or on local train during peak hour and you realize that problem in Italy are not the empty stations.

    • @margaretjones777
      @margaretjones777 8 месяцев назад +1

      You make a fair point. In fact I know from personal experience that some trains in Italy are extremely busy. I guess my real argument concerns the loss-making nature of rail travel in general, and the broader question of how much it is reasonable for a country to subsidize its railways. I would argue that Italy has gone too far down this route, and the EU seems to agree with me.
