  • Living beings can be classified into 5 kingdoms. Animal, Plant, Fungi, Protist and Monera. Out of these 5, brains and nervous system are found only in the animal kingdom, hence they feel, pain, suffering, joy and are conscious in this world like you and me. Hence they matter on a moral level. The rest are living but insentient, so the comparison is invalid.
Also if you care about plants it makes sense to eat them and not animals. Do you know why? Because it takes on average 16 kgs of plants to produce 1 kg of animal flesh. You are killing more plants and also killing animals by being a non vegan, a vegan however causes the least amount of harm.

Arvind should research the field of plant consciousness. In the same way he says that humans only see chickens as food and don't think farther, vegans completely ignore the factual evidence that plants are able to think, remember, learn - all without a brain. I think this field is important because the way Arvind ignores the sentience of plants, we can ignore sentience of any type of life (aliens) just because they are unfamiliar.

I'll tell you a better counter argument against these plant sympathisers. Use their own logic against them. Animals eat plants for months to years before being consumed by humans, so they are essentially a highly condensed form of plants. A chicken that weighs 3-4 kg now was fed 20 - 25 kg of plants over its lifetime. If you now eat this chicken, aren't you indirectly responsible for way more plant kills than a vegan? If you care about plant pain as an animal eater, then you must consider how many more plants you hurt by eating animals instead of eating plants directly.

People can go to any lengths with this one. Let's say someone said well what if I eat an animal that was small and a baby? This time they will say empirically they are consuming less plants than a vegan. A better answer is just to directly answer their question.

All of these plants we are harvesting the ripe ones before they get damaged and fall from the plant. So, it's not killing the plant or doing harm to the plant. The motive of every living species is to grow and spread it's variety. After harvest, we are keeping the seeds safe for planting again. So we can say this as mutual benefits for both humans and plants. But for animals, if we kill an animal, we can't reproduce the same animal of our own. A simple point that Anatomy of Plants is way different from the animals would've ended it. The bark of the of the tree is not a fully living tissue like our skin( except the the outermost part of skin), and latex is a byproduct of metablism which occurs in plant and not really usefull for it, whereas blood is a living tissue which is essential for us. Rather than a layman, no other fine person on earth would percieve both as same.
Also, the mechanism which plant uses for coordination is endocrine, while humans uses neuro-endocrine, where brain is a component of neuro part. Both the mechanisms are way different in working and just can not be compared.

Once Supreem Ghimire said on Quora
"Let's ignite change, let's create a moment - The vegan movement striving to transcend retribution.
For those who believe in God:
In the God/divine tongue, or let's say, in Sanskrit, the word Meat means 'mamsa'. Mamsa signifies 'Mam' meaning 'Me' and 'Sa' meaning 'He.' This subtly implies that as I inhabit this animal now, in my subsequent life, this creature might have an opportunity to consume me in the same way.
And for those who embrace science but not God:
Recall the motion lessons from your school days and delve into the laws of motion. The third law of motion states that for every action, there exists an equal and opposite reaction. Furthermore, Modern Science's recent revelation about the multiverse concept isn't fictional; it could hold validity.
Hence, what genuinely matters is your next course of action. It's time for transformation - a transformation in favor of the animals, who, too, possess equal rights and the freedom to inhabit this planet. Embrace your humanity, and become conscious living beings.
In the human context, I'm uncertain about the exact alignment of this statement, but it may hold some relevance."

The ability of plants to feel pain, as animals do, is a topic of debate among scientists. While plants respond to stimuli and can signal distress, they lack a nervous system and pain receptors like animals have. Instead, they react to environmental changes. This area of study is still evolving, with ongoing research aiming to better understand plant responses to various stimuli.so it is not that plant do not feel pain it just we don't know.

I would have answered like this. Plants releasing chemical is to defend from the insect just like our body produces immune cells and proteins to defend against harmful microorganisms. This does not mean plants feel pain or suffers. Every organism has a biological mechanism to live. There is no pain because when you give anesthesia to a human and giving a cut, humans bleed without pain, it is similar to plant producing the latex rubber and there is no involvement of pain. Plants can communicate and even bacteria communicate by releasing chemicals it doesn't mean that they think they should produce chemicals to signal. There is no thought process it just happens, just like we produce fart without thinking and it is biological it just happens.

Someone I once said this to argued that in the wild too animals don't live out their full lifespan. Firstly, several do. Secondly, predatory animals and birds don't engage in rampant killing. Thirdly, till the moment an animal in the wild is killed by a predatory bird or animal, s/he lives in freedom - something humans rob from animals born and raised in factory farms.

We should not cut big old trees which have been at that place for a very long time. I hope you have seen trees like peepal, Neem, bargad. You would feel connection with them. You would feel bad if you would come to know that somebody has cut them down. Be environment friendly. But eating fruits and leaves is not same as eating an animal hands and legs. Have you ever seen an animal shedding its own hands, legs and other body parts? but plants do. That is the difference. The plants and trees are your parents. You can enjoy their biproducts. Compassion towards animals and plants is both necessary and wise. At the same time, we humans have to consume life to sustain our lives - life we consume may be in the form of a plant / animal. We can Choose plant instead of animal to create lesser pain. Lets accept the fact that we are cruel, we cause pain and gain from it. But as conscious beings we can cause lesser pain by choosing plants. Afterall we are human beings. Not GODS... ( What i mean by pain is not the pain triggered by nervous system. I am referring to the pain (fear) sensed by other species when we challenge its survival instincts).

Look I know how passionate people are with their respective 'isms'. And I am not here to demonise or ridicule any side. Choose whatever suits you the best. However, I can't deny the possibility of pain among plants. In plants we tend more to reduce the same thing into 'biochemical pathways of defence/stress management' than to just call it 'pain'. And we do it to animals as well. But still, its much more easier to empathize with an animal than to a plant(However example of genuine empathy towards plants could be seen in movements such as the Chipko movement. Genuine empathy, and not that emerges solely for justifying meat eating practices) Similarly its easier to emphathise with a human than to an animal. Further, one would prefer to light up a corpse than a living human. So it all boils down to empathy. And just like pain, empathy is not just a fleeting emotion. It also serves a great evolutionary purpose, thus must be acknowledged for the continuity of our species.
Remember, that our ever depreciating empathy for the seeds of certain plants made them evolve into the cereals & pulses we know and love today(though lot it has changed nutritionally as well.) Maybe the same thing is happening with certain animals. The point is that life has no dead end, it finds its course, either ruthlessly or in a balanced manner. Choice is ours. We have to choose somewhere between the two extremes- 1. misanthropy 2. cannibalism.

Non-vegetarians shouldn’t be the ones to discuss the pain plants might feel. Here are my questions:
Can you consume meat fresh, without any plant-based spices or seasonings?
We aren’t chopping down entire trees to eat. We simply pluck a fruit or vegetable that would fall in a few days anyway. It’s akin to trimming a beard.
I would clearly disagree with eating plants if we were killing an entire tree to eat. However, that’s not the case.
Take rice for example. Rice is harvested when the crop cycle is complete and the plant is already dead.
As for vegetables, if left unpicked, they would naturally fall to the ground within a few hours. We pick them at this stage.
So, our consumption is more about no pain harvesting than killing.

Since ages we have been brought up and been in such a mindset that killing animals and eating them is fine. And when someone is letting us know the truth. Helping us to lead an ethical life and be humane to animal kind, everyone finds a point to debate. If we can have an alternative to not kill plants, definitely we can. But we eat plant based food to sustain. We have an option to be herbivores. Our simple choice ends suffering of a species. Hope one day we see the change.

I would like to offer a brief perspective challenging the moral justification often attributed to veganism. While the ethical treatment of animals is a commendable concern, it is crucial to recognize that moral values can vary widely among individuals and cultures. What might be deemed morally imperative by one may not hold the same weight for another.
Moreover, one could argue that humans have been omnivores throughout history, and our biology suggests a natural inclination towards a varied diet that includes both plant and animal products. Consequently, adopting a vegan stance might be seen as an imposition of a specific moral viewpoint on a diverse range of ethical beliefs.
This note seeks not to dismiss the ethical considerations associated with veganism but to emphasize the importance of respecting differing moral perspectives when engaging in discussions surrounding dietary choices.

The idea should not be the stop the cruelty completely ... it is to reduce as much as we can. If we start eating veg only it will still reduce the cruelty to plants also. We will need less plants to feed livestock and that will eventually result in less cruelty to plants and animals.

Just curious, if we have a genuine answer to this; even if we suppose that plants can't feel pain, we still understand that plants have survival instincts and if we kill them i.e. restrict them to grow further and die naturally, it would still be against their will; given that would it be justifiable to kill plants

I just don't get it even though they can see cruelty from there eyes of animals who dies. But plant produce layer by layer on to their skin. They have fruits which eventually fall bythemselves and will get degrade if not used. People compare living moving and eating oraganism with plants. And trying to justify the reason of eating meat while comparing to plants whose pain they can't even see with their naked eyes. So, isn't the answer should be u should choose to eat which is less cruel than being most cruel

let's be real - we humans can be pretty thoughtless. We waste food like it's nothing and don't see how our actions are wiping out animals left and right. It's not cool. Animals aren't the ones messing up; we are. So, how about we start caring a bit more and living a bit wiser? It's all about respect and making small changes.

I must show this video to the Australian firefighters. They focus on saving humans, their homes and wild life only when putting out fires. I am yet to see a report saying firefighters braved the fires to rescue ten trees cause plants have feelings.

The signal he is talking about is not communication but message of fungus which lives in roots with a symbiotic relation with tress. Since in jungle, tress are close to each other, roots of various plants intertwine and fungus also connect with each other. So when we cut trees, it is the fungus which react to stimulus. It is not plant cognition or communication. Pranav Radhakrishnan has explained it well in one of his video.

The example of pouring kerosin and burning... he said Alive human and dead one. What if Normal Human and Onother Human who is in coma ( Non functional brain ) but live... He says plants does not have brain so they dont feel pain. Same way the human who is in coma also doesnt feel pain. So can we do what ever we want to that human in coma ? will that be alright ? 🤔

Simple explanation is if we eat tomato, mango or any fruits or most of the vegetables, and throw the seeds away, we get new plants and trees. But if we eat chickens, mutton, fish, crabs and prawns and throw the bones or shells, away v dont get new chickens, mutton, fish, crabs and prawns.. So veganism is a kind of loving plants and animals.. But nonvegans shows discriminations by loving some animals and killling some animals.

Hello Arvind, I wanna go vegan and I'm convinced by everything you said to go in that direction BUT I HAVE A QUESTION , we're told that plants can feel vibrations i.e. if we grow the plant with love and words of positive affirmation , they tend to grow faster , healthier and more beautiful than ever , just like animals and us humans. Then does this mean they feel pain as well? I mean obviously they can sense it. Isn't sensing and feeling the same?
I'm asking this because I really don't wanna harm any being for my selfish reasons. Although I do want to survive.

Vegans argue that just because plants don't have brains and can't scream and cry to show their pain and suffering, they don't actually suffer.
