    According to James Kingsland's recent (and quite enthralling) book, Am I Dreaming, pg. 195, schizophrenics and folks on LSD are not fooled by this illusion! I guess if I should find myself tripping or going mad, I'll come back here and try again.

      Does that mean it's harder to fool schizophrenics and folks on LSD?

      @@Pfth Well, Kingsland's argument is long and complex, but (from what I gather) it is more about the absence of a conceptual filter on the people who are not ''fooled'' (by this illusion). Many of the current models of consciousness postulate a brain that basically ''hallucinates'' our reality (for reasons of efficiency) and engages in a continuous interplay between ''top down'' predictions'' of what is most likely the case (eg. a convex face) and sensory input. When predictions don't match with sensory input (as when we see the mask in profile and realize it is concave) the model changes. But habit certainly dictates the nature of the first, best guess, and what our brains present. I suppose that people who, perhaps due to excessive neuro transmitters like dopamine and serotonin , don't filter out most of the extraneous sensory input, might have insight (in some sense beyond my poor punning!) into what is really in front of them. But, of course, this can be as overwhelming and inefficient, as a permanent LSD trip might easily be. The point of this illusion seems to be our palpable frustration when we KNOW the mask is concave, but STILL cannot ''see'' it that way due to the ingrained experience we have with faces being convex. I am sure that Kingsland is not suggesting folks on LSD or suffering schizophrenia are harder to fool. I probably should have worded my comment better!!

    The Beethoven mask isn't doing it for me... the nose just looks inverted. Anyone else getting that? Maybe because I was prepared for an illusion...

      Yes! I can readily see the Beethoven mask is concave. It is out of plumb and the lighting gives it away. Quite jolly, what!

      @Pfth 3 года назад +2

      @@westsidesmitty1 Can we be sure it's because of the lighting. What if... what if... ... ... ?

      @@Pfth LOL! Yeah, the ''what if'' possibility crosses my mind from time to time (especially with the stir crazy cabin fever of 11 months in lock down mode). I think we can rule out LSD, and since we both are ''fooled'' by the first mask, it would mean that, at worst, we are only ''half'' crazy! And frankly, given what I see on the news, I'd say that makes us more sane than a huge portion of the people (and most ALL of the crazy politicians!). Stay healthy and may you be happy (the heck with the rest!).

      Yes, me too. I guess this is because this illusion is complex and many factors influence it, not only our expectation and familiarity.
