Nice vid! Thanks for posting. I really miss this jet. Wish I could go back to the day I checked into VF-74 and do it all over again. I miss the flight deck! My wife doesn't miss the deployments, but I do! Flight deck troubleshooter is the GREATEST job in the Navy!!! So glad I chose to be an airframer!
my cousin was a mechanic for vf 31 2002-2007 he said that the tomcats systems compared to the f-18 was a big difference but the tomcat was better because it was faster and more versitial than the super hornet and the hornet
Didnt help that cheney put a stop to new airframes being built. This fighter could still be protecting our fleets and being used as multirole fighters. The proposed upgrade was better at everything and cheaper to boot. Cheney didnt have friends and stock at NG though, did he? Nope he had friends and stock at MDD and Boeing though.
Antifaith29 Ain't it always about following the money and whose hand is in whose pocket? My other thought, is that government and the military are not into getting maximum utility out of military hardware. And it does not seem that there is a real care or concern to spend taxpayer dollars efficiently but to look at how to spend what they were budgeted before in the past year or years and spend more. If they spend less, their fear is not to get the money they want in the future much less the money they need to new hardware, maintenance etc. Look, as an example of many, how the Air Force tried to screw the Warthog out of service because they simply wanted to spend money on new faster, gimmick filled toys, that surely would not be as effective to ground troops. Where budget and spending money is concerned, Government works inefficiently that way. I can attest to that.

@jm431 At some point, every jet reaches its lifespan limit. Too much fatigue, wear and tear on the airframe. A fighter jet isn't meant to last more than 25-30 years.
F14Dits the most capable fighter not the F18 nor the F18E/F.the f14 was just to expensive an dificult to mantain an even so the airframe was geting to old bla bla bla.the f18 it`s just the newest airplane but that doesent mind more capable.

The Super Hornet can out perform the Tomcat in Air to Air. The Tomcat could fly Mach 2.4+ but only for Short bursts
