- A Former teacher of mine was talking to me about how his younger brother was a naval aviator and told me that he had some clips in flight that he recoreded with his own camera. long story short i asked for a copy and he was more than happy to make me one, enjoy.

The best part about the video, based on the age of it, is that he brought a camcorder into that cockpit! Back then camcorders were the size of a bazooka! I'm glad he did it but that must have been tight.
In that case which year is the video from???
@@ramansharma8585 based on the overall quality, i'd say early 90's
mopart600 tomcats are big jets if you was the take a big camera in the cockpit this is the best one to do it in.
Thanks for the video. They should have the tomcat back in the air. New updates included
@@theonefrancis696 A-7 Corsair was still in play and he said the USS Ranger. He said something about the Ranger has no elevator. Looked like he was over San Diego flying into Miramar to the Top Gun school. I was on the USS Ranger CV-61 never saw any A-7 Corsairs only in my Airman Apprentice school in San Diego.
The good ole days!! Thanks for not ruining with music!
Some must think boring. I could watch footage like this all day
I served on Stennis the Menace and I too had a camcorder many of us did and those radars are no joke, when they are on the deck you hear the buzzing? Thats them Radars. We used aluminum foil wrapped around the cameras to deflect the interference. My video's are soon becoming 20 years old, I guess I need to get some of my footage here from OEF. 2001-2002 Also the Carrier looks like the Ranger Unless Enterprise had their island thinner at some point and painted black. My Mentor and Friend, First Class EM1 (SW) (AW) Madden served on her.
Upload these asap! Please invest in great quality conversion equipment as well!
please do upload
Definitely get those uploaded, please! Video like that will be enjoyed by many right now, and even more valued in the future. Imagine if a guy had film from his f86 or something back in the 50s but just never got around to digitizing it and now it's lost. We'd all be sick about it if we heard about it. Don't be that guy, be the guy that gives the world that footage!
Thanks for your service sir. 🫡
Please upload love seeing these kind of videos
This is an aviation gem, I pray this footage is preserved indefinitel, truly a great video showing the tomcat
..."we brought a ship with us didnt we?" LOL
After doing some research on this video, I have determined that the squadron that your former teacher's younger brother was assigned to was VF-301 "Devil's Disciples". Even more specifically, since I heard the name "Enterprise" at some point in the video, I'm only guessing that this was when the "Devil's Disciples" were stationed aboard the USS _Enterprise_ during August 1988.
Wall of text incoming:
VF-301 was activated on 1 October 1970 and assigned to Carrier Air Wing Reserve 30 (CVWR-30) (tail code "ND") at Naval Air Station Miramar, California.
The squadron first flew the F-8L Crusader and later transitioned to the F-4B Phantom II in 1974. Their time with the B-models was short and VF-301 soon received the F-4N in February 1975. In 1980, VF-301 received the most advanced F-4 variant in the U.S. Navy, the F-4S. In October 1984 the unit transitioned to the F-14A Tomcat. The squadron made its first deployment with the F-14A on 21 April 1985, with five aircraft visiting MCAS Yuma, Arizona for air-to-air training against U.S. Marine Corps F-21A Kfir fighters of Marine Fighter Training Squadron 401 (VMFT-401). At this time, the squadron was still transitioning to the F-14 and it was not until 4 August the same year the entire squadron was able to deploy to NAS Fallon, Nevada for air wing training.
The "Devil's Disciples" first carrier landings were on board the USS _Ranger_ . Further carrier training was limited but did include time on board the USS _Enterprise_ between 10 and 22 August 1988. Later in its life the squadron became the first Naval Air Reserve squadron to drop air-to-ground ordnance, specifically Mk 84 bombs and Mk 20 cluster munitions.
After 24 years of service VF-301 was disestablished on 11 September 1994, the same time as sister squadron VF-302, due to post-Cold War budget cuts where the Navy opted to sacrifice Reserve F-14 squadrons to keep Regular Navy F-14 squadrons operating. Deactivation of the rest of CVWR-30 was soon to follow. During these 24 years VF-301 had acquired an outstanding safety record, flying 71,322.4 hours without a Class A mishap, setting a new record for Navy tactical jet squadrons.
I was on the Enterprise in 88 and the two Tomcat squadrons we had were VF-114 Aardvarks and VF-213 Black Lions.
I was assigned to VF-301 from 87-90. Great part of my life. The suadron was renamed Fighting Infernos because one of the CO's wives didnt like the Devils desciples monokor.
definitely vf-301 tail markings, but based on comparison images i'm pretty sure they're on board the Ranger, CV-61, not enterprise.
No, its not USS Enterprise in video.
@@pattrickhumphreys2257 probably on a CQ trip.
Great stuff thanks for posting this. I know a lot of people like this sort of thing really is much appreciated.
That overhead view with the tomcat catshot is beyond cool
I enjoyed every second of this video. I fly the f-14 in dcs as a pilot and I am training to be a RIO. Amazing airframe!
Very awesome video. Thanks so much for sharing. I would think footage like this is relatively rare given it was created way back before GoPro's were invented, the cameras were significantly larger and Mira Mar was NAS, not MCAS. The intercom/radio chatter was a bonus. A sweet piece of F-14 history from the air crew's perspective :-)
I wonder what Carrier, not a SPS -48 Air Search rotating?
Maybe the old minimalist SPS-49?
You know that got changed out, because iterations of SPS-48 is still fielded and loved.
Miramar.
So awesome to hear "top gun this is Miramar tower" brings back memories of being a kid driving up or down the 15 when it was still fighter town and there were still 14s around.
@@Johnnycdrums The "minimalist" SPS-49 is still in use as well - for the uninformed, there's a REASON both the '48 and '49 were used together, but you'd need access to a CSTOM library to understand why.
@@calvinhobbes7504 ; No I wouldn't because we didn't have an SPS-49 on the USS Chicago.
We had a 48, 43, and 30.
I repaired F-14`s at NAS Miramar 1980-1982..looks like that`s where he landed at first? Looks like HY 163 ! Was with VF-114 Aardvarks...Our CO was a Top Gun Commander Cdr Ernie Christensen..of ALL things i ran into his son at my last duty station in Andrews AFB DC, i had the watch at the quaterdeck, n he was on a MAC flight! SO COOL! By then ( 1996) Cdr was now a Admiral of PacFleet! Did 2 cruises on the USS AMerica CV-66 79 and 81, did the ditch ( Suez Canal, all Med sites, Australia and Singapore! God bless all our troops, but esp fond of Naval Aviation and F-14s!! :) Thank you for post! Retired 1996 AE-1..didn`t make Chief, but was being groomed, took the TERA Clinton offered, said goodbye.........
A great vid!!!! Not long ago I was asked to present at the Society of American Military Engineers Conference, where I was met by a few retired military personnel (not directly associated with the conference), and they inquired if I was related to Paul Alvich....he was my father.....and one of the original project managers of the Phoenix Missile System....he personally designed the wings & control surfaces of the missile (which was originally designed for the "blackbird", then fully deployed on the F14. My dad, myself and wife all worked at Hughes Aircraft...…. my dad was also involved in the fight testing at Point Magu…..anyway, I was given vids of the early operational testing (with the F14) and the "blackbird"..... It's almost jaw dropping to see full-size jet fighters, bombers flown remotely and then shot down with point blank accuracy.... literally....some traveling at mach 1 & 2. He very much enjoyed working with the USN staff....and to his day, I still hear how much the crews appreciated the aircraft and the next-gen that is in deployed today! Jeff
awesome
Yup the AIM-47 designed for the YF-12A interceptor became the AIM-54 Phoenix for the cancelled F-111B Sea vark which saw service on F-14s.. Some of the YF-12 missile shots occurred at 70k+ at MAch 3 firing at a maneuvering drone flying at 750 feet. The missile actually kinetically impacted the drone. The TF-12 could carry 3 missiles, the Tomcats 6 and could attain Mach 1.9 loaded with 6 1 thousand pound AIM-54 Phoenix and the heavy launch rails that held them.
"It's break-time" had me laughing so hard for some reason
Some Russian intelligence officer no doubt has a note in a file saying US carriers have break time
right after the loud horn sounds.
Hmm he hey butthead it’s beavis hmm he you got any glue hm he
Yaba Daba Doo!
WOW! The real thing! Just like the movie that finally made me get my pilots license even though I knew I'd never fly one of those babies! Love the laid back chit chat, 'has anyone here seen an aircraft carrier around" , priceless, thanks!
This video is gold.
Jeff this is awesome, really rare footage. Also quite some sea swells on the carrier!
This was awesome.
WAY cool vid! Thanks for posting!
Amazing footage
This is some great footage.
Was in VF-301 late 80's. last couple minutes were our a/c. didn't recognize pilots though. NAS MIRAMAR!
+Michael McMahon I was right beside you in the hangar on east side.. w/VF-114 in the EARLY 80`s! I got OUT for just a month, n actually re-enlisted w/VF-302! did (1) med cuises ( 1979) (1) IO cruise on USS America, ( 1981) retired in 96 w/Clinton TERA program, ( Andrews AFB) i`m still in contact with a fellow from those days ( Steve Royce) Nice to meet you man! Those were the DAYS my friend!
Good morning everyone, from Kansas City!
"I think where getting irradiated". Many times on the main deck of my Frigate (FFG22), I have heard that same sound on my electronics! lol
It's to bad we didn't have Go Pros in the 70s and 80s. Would love to see more
Can't imagine having been an F-14 crew knowing your flying the most feared bad ass aircraft in the world.
I wished we had about 20 Flight Operational left too!!
Best plane ever. I have ab 10,000 hours in the tomcat including ab 3000 combat missions and countless confirmed enemy fighter kills. Playing flight Sim games is hard, but somebody's gotta do it.
The aircraft and aircrews were from VF-301 from CAG-30.
13:08 Wicked view of a cat shot!!! 😎😎😎😎👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👌👌👌
Thats awesome. I've driven down that same highway to San Diego and have seen Super Hornets flying the same pattern!
This is so incredible
Just found this. Cheers!!
Great footage, thanks...
Definitely an F-14A judging by the RIOs instrumentation.
Thanks :D
still iran has those tomcats in service
You would think these F-14 crews are gods .... until you sit with them and tip a few ... then you find out that they're just very, VERY talented men (and women nowadays) with extraordinary work ethics.
this is gold!
Sweet
I’m loving the casual sarcasm from the guys flying multimillion dollar military aircraft over the ocean.
This is VF-301 "Devil's Disciples"
Very cool footage! Anyone know what year this was? Looks like the early '90's.
MUCH better than a bunch of crappy music!
Awesome footage
Man, those Aircraft Carriers look especially small, when you have to land on one....lol!!!
@Van peter I really do not know how they do it at night..... I couldn't even imagine how terrifying it is at night, with it raining.....
@Van peter Awesome! Not many people get to do something like that in their lifetime. I'm grateful for every single one of y'all!!!
@Van peter I've watched quite a flew videos on Flight Deck Operations. Green shirts seemed to be the most busiest of the colors on the Flight Deck.
@Van peter Unless, I am wrong about the color?
@Van peter Or, did you where a Brown Shirt?
8:22 A) "I think we're getting irradiated by all those antennas" B) OK, what the fuck do we do now?! Get out?? Love the video, love hearing the chatter and not Drowning Pool like everyone else has mentioned. Any idea what carrier that is?
Epillon 65 USS ENTERPRISE
He’s not lying. That’s exactly with the recorder is flickering.
Isn't the USS Ranger. Look at the island. Likely forestall class of ship.
Thanks for sharing.... Miramar days! Any chance you could reupload without the text in the middle of the screen.... Fantastic that there is no annoying music added in... ;)
+cyberdami i need to do some digging for the original copy i have and ill try to re upload..i know it sucks
If you manage to locate it, that would be fantastic ;)
9:46 this part is so cool.
The guy at 10:50 sounds like the know it all from The Polar Express hahahaha
Lmaooo
yeas
Imagine having him as your RIO 🤦🏻♂️
When Fighter Pilots used the HGU33 Helmet & Mask, they looked like REAL Fighter Pilots
The best of the best, strapped with missiles and bombs, testorone everywhere in a 50million dollar F14 Mission!..... Ummm... Guys we got a weather recon for you. 🤣🤣
This guy at 10:55 sounds a lot like the RIO (Swordsman?) that engaged the Libyans over Sidra.
The RIO that fired after reporting the bogey turning into him several times?
I really enjoyed that. I would love to hear where are they now
amazing
Flight of the Intruder
Back when the camera was as big as your head or bigger
Sitting on deck looked and sounded like you guys got microwaved like a Mac n cheese ready meal, every day 😳😅

Great video
Cool plane 👍
Can anyone explain what the morse "AQ" is that can be heard several times in the background?
That is the TACAN or ILS broadcasting the ID of the field's transponder
Can I just bring notice that the video was claimed and I dont remember any music in it? I think it thought that the radar and other interference from the carrier was music.
It's either an error with the automated software that looks for content matches, or some scammer claimed it to get the ad revenue from the video.
Nice video ...Thankyou 🙏🏾
でおます!
13:08 now thats sweet
I don’t think most modern fighter pilots or just pilots that have only flown in modern aircraft realize how good they have it. Just the modern avionics makes flying that much easier.
DLC. Direct Lift Control? Was it automated than or a manual trim type setup?
Dynamic lift control. It's a momentary scroll wheel on the left side of the stick.
it engages and controls some spoilers which support lift without disturbing the angle of attack the plane needs to land properly, which is 15 degrees.
@@bmgzo6 I tried to recall it off the top of my head and got it wrong. Its practical use does provide dynamic lift control, and I got it confused with the correct name. Of course, I also wasn't a dickhead about it when I said it like you were. Thanks for providing your (useless) input, BMG. By the way, why didn't you reference NATOPS and provide Josh with an answer that was better than mine?
2.22.6.1 DLC Operation. DLC is engaged with
the control stick DLC switch and commanded by the
thumbwheel. The thumbwheel is spring loaded to a
neutral position. Forward rotation of the wheel extends
spoilers and aft rotation retracts them proportionally to
the degree of thumbwheel rotation. Absolute spoiler
deflection is dependent upon lateral stick position (see
Figure 2-60). DLC control is provided by the yaw
computer.
Upon engagement of DLC, the roll computer
extends the inboard spoilers from the landing flaps
down drooped (-4.5!) position to 17.5! above the flush
(0!) position. The pitch computer displaces the trailing
edges of the horizontal stabilizers 2.75! down from
their trim position. If thumbwheel control is rotated
fully forward, the inboard spoilers extend to 55! and the
stabilizer trailing edges remain at 2.75!. This increases
the rate of descent. If the thumbwheel control is rotated
fully aft, the spoilers retract to their -4.5! position and
the stabilizer trailing edges return to the trim position.
This decreases the rate of descent.
Too cool
Cool video
Thank you very much for sharing with the rest of the Air Force addicted!!!
It’s a shame that consumer video recorders fell so short of pro camera rigs back then. Still good vid.

Well, all in all a really nice video man.... but what the hell does the age of their food have to to with this?? ;)
Lol!!
+Trex Indominus thanks for bringing it to my attention hahaha
"nose it over & glide it in" LOL :-)
Nice weather.
His eyes are the camers you can see it as hes looking through his visors and seems like his jets being flown from on ground programers and the responders and transponders are relaying back on programmings and sightings so that he or they can concentrate on the visuals and capturings of sights and sighting on being able to show the people what its like to be in the cock pits of the flights
I know it's a little late but thought I'd let you know anyways, this is a RIO's flight footage, not the pilots.
wish iwas born earlier so i can be a boss too
These guys don't sound like Navy pilots.
Strange not seeing drop tanks whether it’s just qualms or not. Fleet squadron tomcats always have drop tanks. VF-1 1989-1995 AO3
Someone didn't like this pilot to give him such a d-bag of a rio.
Yep, his life was real tough, wasn't it?
This is the worst Top Gun sequel I’ve ever seen
The "younger brother " here was a Naval Flight Officer, not a Naval Aviator. HUGE difference!
Both Pilots and RIOs were referred to as "Aviator".
@Mike Haggar Aren't you special breed of stupid? It takes all of 10 seconds to search and find out that yes, there's a big difference between a Naval Aviator and a Naval Flight Officer.
Jonathan Baird there is a difference but they are both aviator’s, they both have wings.
Literally stops right before touchdown?!?
Date and place ?
Southbound top gun check transponder setting load 3 alpha4750 30 miles runway 24 looks good
I liked hearing the tacan
+Bob Radu The morse code is "A Q" being sent as the identifier of the ship's TACAN, Tactical Air Navigation system which guides the aircraft.

What happened to so many RIOs after the F14 was retired? Do they end up becoming pilots?
retrained to be Rio's on the F/A 18's
Being in isolation when you do you're part giving up so much while others don't care and are not doing their part am I doing this in vain ? I really want to help others and be in team spirit what more can I do ?
Jesus why dint they just use a gopro
was not invented, and no tech back then...its 1988.
Can you give me a copy of this video without the watermark in the center?
So you can repost it without credit.
Is anybody able to tell if it's an A or B model?
That seat looks like a face somehow...
yeah, you guys were getting microwaved sitting there, lol.
Correction: "NFO"s Flight Footage".
Just enjoy the video :)
