  • Don and Betty prepare for Sally's birthday party. Don spends the morning assembling a playhouse for her while drinking copious amounts of beer (indicator of high-functioning alcoholism).
When the guests arrive, the children play outside while Betty gossips with the other housewives about Helen Bishop, a divorcée who has just moved into the neighborhood. Helen arrives at the party with her son Glen, but she is treated like an outcast due to her failed marriage. They imply to her that she's promiscuous, and the ladies also find it highly suspicious that she frequently goes for long walks in the neighborhood. The fathers at the party, meanwhile, leer at her and one propositions her.
Don films the party with a handheld camera, and espies amidst all of the suburban flirtations, gossiping, back-biting, and one-upmanship, one couple sharing a genuinely tender and loving moment, which appears to distress him. Betty sees Don and Helen standing together, and quickly rushes out to ask him to pick up Sally's birthday cake.
However, after getting the cake, he drives by his house and then drives away without stopping. Betty is humiliated in front of all of the neighbors, while the children are disappointed.
He finally returns late that night, the party long over, accompanied by a dog. Don gives Sally the dog as a gift. This recalls what Rachel told him about how a dog can be everything to a little girl. However, Betty's reaction is ambivalent.
    - Daddy! Daddy! Daddy! Wake up. It's my birthday. It's my birthday! It's my birthday!
    - It's not your birthday. It's your party.
    - Don, the party's at 2:00. You have to put together the P-L-A-Y-H-O-U-S-E.
    - How am I going to put together a pony?
    - A pony? I'm getting a pony? Bobby, I'm getting a pony!
    - Great.
    - She'll forget all about it when she sees the playhouse.
    - There's a bacon and egg sandwich for you on the range.
    - Well, how many are we?
    - Us, you...
    - Carlton's with the kids. Make it quick.
    - The Darlings, Helen Bishop...
    - You didn't.
    - I had to. She saw me buying balloons at the market. Didn't seem right.
    - So what? I just brought her the pie, got my dish back at the end. Have you seen her walking up Downtree Ridge? Where the hell is she walking to?
    - I don't know.
    - How old is her kid?
    - Kids. The boy is 9. I'm gonna say Gary, maybe Glen? And the baby is a 2-year-old. She said she was gonna try and get a sitter.
    - I would. It's probably a big event for her.
    - That man.
    - I know.
    - Everyone's gonna be here soon. Why don't you go up and take a shower?
    - Want company?

Elizabeth "Betty" Draper is a fictional character on AMC drama television series Mad Men. She is wife (and later ex-wife) of main character Don Draper and mother of his three children. Blonde and beautiful but emotionally distant and immature, she spends the bulk of the series slowly growing as a person amid the social and political turmoil of the 1960s.
Her character's appearance is often compared to that of Grace Kelly, with the similarities between the two also drawn during the first season of the series.
In Season 1 Betty and Don Draper live in a large house in suburban Ossining, New York, with their children Sally and Bobby. In the second episode, set in the spring of 1960, Betty starts to see a psychiatrist to address repeated psychosomatic spells of numbness in her hands, which began after her mother's death. It seemed likely that Betty was experiencing Conversion Disorder. Having discovered that her psychiatrist was giving reports of her sessions to Don, she decided to take revenge by telling her doctor things she wanted her husband to hear, but not to tell him directly. She voiced her suspicion that her husband was unfaithful. She told the doctor about her husband's infidelities and how much they upset her. Sometime before February 1962, the consultations were stopped.
January Jones (January 5, 1978) is an American actress and model. She is best known for her role as Betty Draper in Mad Men (2007-2015), for which she was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards for Best Actress - Television Series Drama and a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

I like how don gets discreetly hammered in this episode and then steals a dog.

Don was thinking the same thing every man thinks when building a playhouse: "yup I have no idea how to build this."

I've always thought that a lot of people misread the scene where Don quite venomously says to Sal "you people" as homophobia. Rather, I always took the "you people" to refer to basically everyone that he works with who he sees as massively indiscrete in their extra curricular activities. Don doesn't look down at people who sleep around... provided that they compartmentalize their lives and conceal their feelings as much as he does.
Watching this scene again reinforces that read for me. Francine's "want company?" line was pretty out of pocket and aggressive, even if she was joking. While bemused, I think he is kinda in disbelief she would say such a thing. Being a little drunk + that interaction + a general feeling of estrangement from his home life = "what the fuck am I doing here with *these people*. It's why he ended up leaving the party.
