I'd love to see you do more of this type of video in the future, you’re actually really good at making them! It was very intriguing to learn about the positives and negatives of different patches and how they affect speedruns.
Same, though I recommend a larger pop filter or a reduction on the gain of the microphone. I kept noticing it every so often, its not super noticeable until you listen for it
as a new runner for 1.2.1, its been a great experience!!! the route changes frecuently, but the skills are transferable and its fun to watch it develop. Great video Player5!
I know you probably won’t do this, but you should have a video, or a series, showing and explaining how to do every glitch in the 1.0 Any% route. Personally I’ve been trying to do the category, and I have to search far and wide to find tutorials on any of the tricks. I think the speedrunning community would grow a lot if anybody did a video/series like that, and if it came from THE best speedrunner of that category, then that’s just icing on the cake. Sleep on it will ya!
Great video! I never played much on 1.0.0 so it was cool to learn about some of the quirks. I knew zuggling was better on 1.0.0 but I never knew it was that big of a difference!
Would love to see videos of similar format in the future! Personally, I like glitchless as it's playing the game the way it's meant to be played but with great expertise
Yeah it's pretty much only used in bug limit speedruns nowadays. What's funny is that TotK 1.0 has infinite horse stamina, but the UI works properly unlike in BotW where the spur icons don't refill even though you can actually use them.
I finished ToTK in July last year after 250h of gameplay and it's so great that I can still have some fraction of the exitement from back then thanks to your videos :)
What is nice is that TotK is one of those games where it is actually possible to grab midversions from "trusted sources"(not going to elaborate, everyone knows) that you can use through console modding or emulation, if one decides to break official boundries. Many older Switchgames like Xenoblade 2, Kirby Star Allies or well, Zelda Breath of the Wild actually, suffer from the issue that nobody seems to have backed up most of the earlier updates so it is largely either 1.0 or latest patch). It's kinda dreadful even outside of the potential speedrunning context, several versions of games may essencially be lost media already with often not even any real documentation of what they even individually did/added/removed.
I noticed the glitch where you can't warp out of the depths unless you touch the surface while I was doing surface-less runs, I switched SD cards and suddenly was trapped in the depths! Great video
I'm a big fan of all your speedruns, but I especially like glitchless. Keep up the great content! Also, about Nintendo not adding DLC, there has to be a reason they don't give you full hearts (and full stamina).
I'm definitely not holding my breath for it, but following the same DLC structure as BotW would be so good. It's such a waste to not give us golden lynel horns >:(
on your second bit about DLC, it was the same for BotW even with DLC where you couldn't have max hearts and stamina unfortunately, so its no real indicator
It was trash for them to not include hard mode , especially because it was already in botw which proves that they just didnt feel like it , plus releasing a dlc for a 70$ game that reuses the same map as its prequel and a lot of other things that are similar , would be more of an EA move than a nintendo move , who knows maybe theyll add hard mode on a free major update ? Doesnt necessarily have to be in a dlc.
yeah you were already a couple hearts/stamina vessels short on BotW without glitches even with the DLC, so I doubt that indicates anything maybe we’ll find a glitch similar to apparatus storage in TotK though; who knows!
I'm not sure if it's just me but I feel like v1.0 is generally more laggy. I have two Switches with versions 1.0 and 1.1 respectively and whenever I play on 1.0 I feel like the performance is worse.
Yeah 1.0 is definitely laggier than later versions. I believe they did make some change that would improve performance I don't remember what exactly they did (although not even 1.2.1 is free from lag in temples).
The main difference between 1.0 and 1.1 was a fairly major performance patch which reduced frame drops and loading lag. This patch was completed after the cartridges were manufactured, but before launch day. It's the main reason why I play 1.1.1 instead of 1.0.
@@Player5SR iirc, v1.0 doesn't have dynamic resolution with FSR. It's just always at 900p. I think someone also found that there were a lot of debug calls happening that could theoretically slow down the game but idk if they removed that or not.
When TOTK released I had NO idea about the “auto-update” function, but thankfully it was set to “off” on my Switch and I’m still at 1.1.0, which from what I can gather from this video is the overall best version from a casual standpoint. Just a quick question: I have digital 1.1.0 on my main Switch, and another on which I have never installed or otherwise booted the game, so it has no game/update data for TOTK at all. Would it be possible to set that console to “offline” and version match it to 1.1.0 from my main Switch? The second console would have a physical copy, obviously. I just don’t want to ever lose 1.1.0 and a backup for it would be nice.
I haven't done it myself, but that should work and other than hacking your switch would be the only way to get to one of the intermediate versions afaik.
There have been a few people running it, but changes to the leaderboard need to be discussed and there were other things going on like the TotK tournament/Holidays so people were busy. It becoming official is still in the works afaik.
I think the most insane thing is I almost 100% Totk when it still was brand new. I maybe got one update before I beat it. With that in mind despite how “broken it was” I didn’t experience any game breaking bugs. Congrats Nintendo.
Playing casually, I'm really happy with 1.1.1. It has almost all of the good glitches, and also has the post-1.0 performance improvements, and pretty good compatibility with mods. I plan on never updating my copy.
its also possible to just delete TotK and put the cartridge back in and you dont have to factory reset the switch you just have to create a new profile or never start TotK on the new Version
So I have a question. I have a totk cartdrige that has 1.0, but I also have the digital version. If I wanna play on the cartdrige, do I have to factory reset my switch?
I hate how nintendo worded it as improving the game, when duping made the game so much more fun and convenient and removing it made the game way worse IMO.
No, you're not allowed to pause the timer in an any% run. 100% speedruns and All Shrines speedruns are allowed to take breaks because they're so long (with rules about break length and frequency).
While DLC is not gonna happen I'm still optimistic we will get a master mode. For the non speedrunners out there, if you aren't interested in making cool vehicles then in my opinion the game's replayability is low since it's just way too easy on normal mode. But yeah I hope they don't patch any glitches at the same time since I don't want any speedrunners hard work nullified.
Unfortunately the in-between patches are only really available through a homebrewed switch which can install and remove update data pretty easily. Otherwise you would need a switch that has 1.1 that never updated to do runs with or match versions locally.
My favorite thing about the game is Wacko Boingo. It's almost useless, incredibly stupid, only usable once per save, and called Wacko Boingo. That and Nintendo hasn't been able to patch it yet.
Pretty late to comment, but might as well. Most glitches can be done on all versions now, what really changes is that sometimes you might need another method that isn't quite as simple or as easy, but it's not bad. There are some glitches that are still version exclusive, but overall you can do the vast majority of them in any version.
I personnally think that Glitchless any% is the best to watch , especially for the real challenge to do every boss + Ganondorf. Hope it'll be the most famous category !
I swear the only good thing i find enjoyable about modern zelda is the speedruns , which is not necessarily a good thing because you dont have to buy the game to watch them...
There is an intro skip allowed for the board, but it comes at the cost of losing a minute or so compared to using the clip in 1.0. It's still pretty handy for those not running on 1.0 and can't do the clip anyway. Runs doing the intro skip start from a save in the room of awakening
It’s so fun to see a speedrunner legend explaining how it works. It’s more interesting because he’s the best.
great video! the rabithole of version differences goes so much deeper than you might think, especially on 1.0.0
1.0 is a gift that keeps on giving :)

Nintendo really used the speedrunning community as beta testers after launch.
Great job on explaining the differences. It'll be cool to see your channel do more content other than speedrun videos

Minor mistake at 12:01: the banner should say 1.2.0 :)
Whoops, kind of a fun coincidence that it's at 12:01 in the video though.
