    Hi, I am confused about the the time when we do the fortitude saves. Lets say that it takes 1 round for the fortitude save, do I roll the fortitude save at the end of each the round or just in the next turn of the NPC who envenom me?

  • @shanedestroyer
    @shanedestroyer 4 месяца назад

    with the centipede example does 1 round mean it happens on the centipede's next turn or like two turns. Sounds dumb but when looking stuff up for a hellhound i learned that if it rolls a 1 on it's fire breath that takes 1 whole round where it doesn't happen and then it it has it back on the turn after that so just wondering if it works similarly with the poison.

  • @CraziFuzzy
    @CraziFuzzy 3 года назад +1

    Great video, and I plan on subjecting a hapless character to centipede poison soon. That said, I have a big of a question. they way I understand the stage periods, that duration has to have passed before the roll is made to go to a different stage. In the case of centipede poison, and it's 1 round duration, this means that the timeline would be a follows:
    Round 1, centipede's turn: Centipede bites squishy victim. victim fails save, so goes to stage 1 and takes 1d6 poison damage
    Round 1, victim's turn: say's ouch and slashes back at the centipede. 1 round has not passed yet, so the stage duration has not expired, so he does nothing regarding the poison at the end of this turn.
    Round 2, centipede's turn: bites again, and misses.
    Round 2, victim's turn: slashes back and kills the centipede. stage 1 duration has passed, so NOT at the end of this turn he rolls his sage, fails, and goes to stage 2.
    I have seen this written out other places, and many seem to think that the stage 1 roll would happen on the turn immediately following the poisoning, but I don't see how that jives with the way the durations are described. "At the end of a stage’s listed interval, you must attempt a new saving throw."

    Ok, I've a few questions about Inhaled poisons:
    1. Once I activate the Inhaled poison, every creature inside that poisonous cloud needs to roll Fort save immediately?
    2. If I stay inside of the poisonous cloud, do I need to roll Fort again? Is the roll in the beginning or in the end of the turn? What if I just use one action to stride through a place with a poisonous cloud? Do I roll Fort save (I'll start and end my turn out of the cloud)?
    3. What happens if I activate 2 Inhaled poisons in the same area? Do creatures inside roll Fort save twice? If yes, does it matter both are the same poison?
    4. It says in the description of Inhaled poisons that a creature aware of the poison before entering the cloud can use a single action to hold its breath and gain a +2 circumstance bonus to the saving throw for 1 round. Does it mean that if an enemy sees me activating an Inhaled poison in a combat once, if I try to do it again (at his face) he could automatically hold his breath to get that bonus?
    5. Can I move the container of the Inhaled poison afte been activated?

  • @TheBl0rp
    @TheBl0rp Год назад

    When someone gets poisoned during combat, you roll the initial Fortitude save right away. If the target fails, do they attempt the next save on their turn the next round? Or on the poisoner's next round? Or at the start of a new turn? I'm not sure, it doesn't seem clear.

    This is great resource, thank you for making this! One question I still have is, how would a virulent affliction's saves adjudicate exactly? Let's say you first come into contact with a virulent disease, and are then prompted to make a Fortitude save; the stage before onset. Is this just one Fort save? Or has the virulent trait already come into effect, and to resist this disease even before onset, two saves must be made? On the other hand, are these two consecutive saves done at once each round, or is there still just one save each round, meaning then it must take two consecutive *rounds of saves* to decrease the affliction stage? Thanks very much!

    Hey Dave, hope all is well. I had a question about poison. If I hit a monster with an injury poison on my turn, and the monster fails their initial save, they take the stage 1 damage right there on my turn, and that duration is one round. Now they are afflicted and they need to make a save at the end of their turn. Does the monster save right away on their turn, which is effectively less than one round, or do they wait until the end of their next turn, which is effectively more than one round?

    • @HowItsPlayed
      @HowItsPlayed  3 года назад +1

      Hey Crunch! I think the correct answer is one full round must pass and they make their save on their first turn after that round (their second turn). That said, in my games I treat that first save like persistent damage and the roll on their very next turn whenever that is. It's just easier for me to keep it straight in my head.

      I think Flavio is correct, pg. 469 "Step 3: End Your Turn" states that "you then attempt any saving throws for ongoing afflictions" after taking persistent damage. So the initial save occurs as soon as the affliction occurs, but all subsequent saves are made at the end of the affected creatures turn.

      The Maximum Duration does NOT include the onset period, and if a condition caused by an affliction has a longer duration than the affliction that caused it, it persists even after the Maximum Duration of that affliction passes. For example, an affliction caused the Drained Condition. The affliction has a max duration of 5 minutes, but Drained requires nights of rest to remove. The Drained Condition will persist even after 5 minutes pass, because it has a longer duration than the affliction.

    • @HowItsPlayed

      I may be looking someplace different than you (I'm not seeing "continuous"), but Call of the Grave inflicts the Sickened condition. Sickened can be removed by spending an action to retch, which lets you attempt a Fort save vs. the effect's DC. On success, the Sickened condition lowers by 1 until it's removed.

    I’m still a bit confused about the order of operations:
    Turn 1:
    Centipede goes first, poisons Ezren because he failed his got save. Ezren goes to stage 1 and takes the listed effects immediately, on the centipede’s turn.
    Ezren’s first turn: does his actions, takes the stage 1 effects again(?), then makes a fort save to either progress or regress, before the very end of his turn?
    Or does he take the stage 1 effects on the centipede’s turn but then not on his own in the first round, but still make a fort save at the end of his first turn on round 1?
    Or does he neither take stage 1 effects nor make a fort save on his first turn, since one round has not elapsed since he was initially poisoned?
    It seems counterintuitive to me that the recipient would take stage 1 effects both on the poisoner’s turn and then on his own turn, it also seems counterintuitive that those would both happen in the same round.

    • @HowItsPlayed
      @HowItsPlayed  3 года назад +3

      I see what you mean -- in my example, I never specified what the initiative order was. If Ezren was higher in the initiative order, then things would progress as shown in the example:
      - Ezren is stabbed by a dagger with Centipede venom. He fails his fort save, gains Stage 1 and as a result suffers 1d6 poison damage.
      - Then, on his next turn (which is the following round), Ezren takes his three actions as normal, and at the end of his turn (basically, when he says he's done and passes initiative to the next person) he rolls his Fort save again. If he succeeds, then he gains Stage 0 and the poison is gone. If he fails the save, he progresses to Stage 2 and suffers 1d8 poison damage (and flat-footed). And if he critically fails, then he gains Stage 3 and suffers 1d12 damage, flat-footed and clumsy.
      And if Ezren was lower in the initiative order than the person who stabbed him, it would look like this:
      - Ezren is stabbed by a dagger with Centipede venom. He fails his fort save, gains Stage 1 and as a result suffers 1d6 poison damage.
      - Then, on his next turn (which is in the same round), Ezren takes his three actions as normal but does not suffer the affects of the poison again or need to make another save because the delay of 1 round has not been met yet.
      - New round enemy takes its turn.
      - At the end of Ezren's turn this round, he makes a Fort save to determine of the affliction improves or worsens and proceeds as normal.

    • @zezashetan
      @zezashetan 3 года назад

      @@HowItsPlayed So I am arguing this. So under your first example, Ezren is stabbed at the end of the previous round. There is a new round and Ezren has to make a save, and fails his save. But does he make saves for the next 5 rounds if he fails because it is a new round. When does the Round in the (1 Round) happen?
      With your second example, Poisoner happens at the beginning of the round and Ezren gets the skip because he is in the same round. In the next round, he has to make a save at the end of his turn. When does he get the next Round in the (1 Round).
      The way I read the rules for Example 1 is: Round 1, Skip. Round 2 Save, Round 3 Skip, Round 4 Save, Round 5 Skip, Round 6 save.
      For the second example: Round 1 Save, Round 2 skip, Round 3 save, Round 4 skip, Round 5 save, Round 6 Skip

    • @Caabus
      @Caabus 3 года назад

      @@zezashetan I understand where you’re coming from, I think the point of your confusion is that the shortest interval between fort saves is 1 round, which means the victim makes a save every round. In your example the interval would be (2 rounds), as 2 rounds would elapse between the victim’s first save in round 1 and second save in round 3. As I now understand it, the only unusual event is, in the initial round, the first fort save is made on the attackers turn, but then on the victim’s turn in all future rounds for that affliction.

    • @ArchangelLion
      @ArchangelLion Год назад

      @@HowItsPlayed The second case is wrong. In that second case, the saving throw doesn't need to be "skipped" that way to respect the "1 round" duration. The save happens at the end of the character's turn, while the duration of the poison is counted by RAW at the start of the creature that applied the poison turn, so that 2nd example is basicly delaying a save for no reason. If the save is done with no delays(just like the first example), its still more in line with the rules of afflictions that want a save at the end of a creature turn AND the duration rules that say "For an effect that lasts a number of rounds, the remaining duration decreases by 1 at the start of each turn of the creature that created the effect".
      In other words, the perfect way to do it would be to make a saving throw at the start of the creature that applied the poison, but since afflictions saving throws happen at the end of a character turn, its gonna be an interval of time earlier sometimes. Otherwise in your example , you would delay the poison by 1 round+ the time to get to the character's turn again(so 1 and a half) and doesn't seem to be the intention nor it works smoothly and its going out of one's way to strictly respect the 1round duration but messing up the timeline of the encounter with an unnecessary delay that fails its purpose when a more correct and elegant solution is available and pretty obvious.
