It sounds like the deal should have been dissolved after it was decided that Epcot wasn't going to be what Walt originally wanted it to be and became another park.
There was no real good reason to dissolve the district past that point. Disney's done a good job of managing the district and it's continuation kept the costs of managing the infrastructure with Disney rather than local taxpayers.
Wonderful as always Rob, I don't think Disney will give up the amount of autonomy that they have because then they don't have to campaign politicians, but I also don't think any modern state would give someone such full autonomy over an area in today's world
Great video Rob, if only Anaheim City Council were replaced with a Reedy Creek Improvement District setup! Alas, the city council seem to forget that without Disneyland, Anaheim wouldn't have become a major tourist and business centre. Personally, when you've got a company like Disney that are only going to better the community infrastructure, it's much better to work with them, than make them jump through hoops and come up with a "Frankenstein Monster" of a proposal like the Eastern Gateway Project.
I agree, I think the RCID was born of their troubles and restrictions in Anaheim. I agree with Rob, too, that something like WDW and the RCID would never happen again in today’s bureaucracy.
You left out the coolest thing the RCID can do. It can build its own nuclear power plant! Of course it would have to abide by all the new regs that have been implemented since then. But while I doubt anything like RIDC would pass today there are other "Improvement Districts" in the area. There is one maybe 2 covering I drive, one I think is just for the I Drive trolley. These Districts are set up when some governing body, aka something who can tax something, has to cover more than one city or municipality.
The legislation that created RCID was a combining of sixteen special taxing districts that existed at that time, thereby forming an "Improvement District". Everybody in Florida lives in a special taxing district...school districts, roadway districts, library districts, water control districts, lighting districts to name a few. The combination of all these districts had never been done before and is doubtful that it will occur again.
Really interesting video! I agree that modern-day states wouldn't allow the creation of a new district and governing body for an ideal city, but I'm not so sure that they wouldn't allow it for something purely recreational. I think that poorer areas might be excited for the chance for economic growth, and campaigning for a separate district on the basis of removing the tax burden of upkeep from the citizens would sway public opinion positively.
Don't we all! I think Walt Disney World is a one-of-a-kind place because Walt Disney was a one-of-a-kind man! Part of me thinks it could still be possible but I think it would take another "Perfect Storm"!

While I basically knew most of this already, I totally agree with your view on it. It's good for the company but it would be a highly unusual thing to see happen again.
The one thing I've never been able to figure out was why the RCID was divided into two cities rather than one. It seems somewhat arbitrary. Maybe it was supposed to be one city for EPCOT itself and one for the corporate side's operations? In practice the mailing address is in Lake Buena Vista but most of the resort is in Bay Lake.
That's because most of the infrastructure (including the main post office) is outside the park itself; which is why if you mail something from WDW the postmark will be Lake Buena Vista, FL.
Interestingly, the lengths Walt went to in order to secretly acquire the land for Disney World is very similar, if not the same tactic-wise to what was done by the Pennsylvania Railroad in the early 1900s-19-teens to acquire the land in Manhattan needed to build the original Penn Station - the secrecy, dummy companies/names, etc... and for the same reason (acquiring the prices cheaper than if they had not disassociated the acquisition with the company buying up the land/they knew who was buying it all up).
Walt's original EPCOT concept is fascinating, but I think the sociopolitical issues of the late 1960s into the 70s were even beyond Disney's handling. I just don't think, realistically, such a big project and a big community could have succeeded. Something along the lines of how Disney got involved in revitalizing the midtown theatre district in New York (which, mind you, was long in the cards before Michael Eisner even saw the crumbling New Amsterdam Theatre) under Walt's guidance, however, probably would have realistically been a success, and a lasting one. Who knows? If Walt hadn't died in 1966 and lived 10-15 more years, maybe he would have gotten involved in that project?
I would imagine the two county governments that would have to step in if RCID disappeared have nightmares about having to absorb all the responsibilities that RCID takes care of for itself. Public works, road construction, police, fire, EMS, a whole mess of inspectors, and can you imagine what a pain zoning meetings would be with Disney having to show up every month to ask for like 5000 permits so they can build a few more bathrooms in the parks?
It seems like Amazon could be granted RCID-level power in the really “business-friendly” states. If I recall correctly, I think a town somewhere in Georgia? deannexed a portion of itself, incorporated that new land, gave all of it to Amazon, and appointed Jeff Bezos mayor for life. The promise of billions of investment and 50,000 jobs is just too much for anywhere to ignore and those numbers seem to be enough to get the public to give a corporation a pass.
Not quite. The bill gives the state a year to review and decide if they really want to get rid of it. Just when I think I know all there is to know about WDW, Rob drops another video and I learn something new! Great video and thank you for this new (to me) information! 💖🏰°o°
Hey rob! I have a question. I've been watching older Mickey Mouse shorts and a lot of them involve the name Ajax. In one short, Mickey, goofy and Donald create the Ajax Ghost Exterminators. In another, there is a killer gorilla with the name of Ajax. There are other examples of the use of this name as well. What is the significance of this name regarding the Disney company? Thanks rob and have a magical day!
This is a great question! Marking it since I think it could make for a good video. The short answer from what I know at the moment is that it's really just a generic name used as Disney's version of Warner Bros' ACME. A little let so for Ajax, but for ACME the significance of the A name is that back then businesses were primarily found through alphabetically listed phone books, so A names were popular.
With IPs? No line personally. The only time I won't ride an attraction twice is if it's just not a good ride. That list for me has been pretty short to far and doesn't have too much to do with IP. Stitch was the closest that I guess you could blame on the IP. Beyond that it's usually more "plain" rides like Primeval Whirl and the river rapids that I pass up.
Rob Plays The river rapids? Now that's a great ride. Always has a long line, lots of shaded queue and it always gets you wet. Although with the hot weather you're usually dry before before you clear the exit. I also thought stitch was a cute ride. Not as good as Alien Encounter, but I thought they actually did a good job transforming a scary, not so kid friendly attraction in to something everyone could enjoy. Personally, I think if Stitch's Great Escape had been the original version of the ride, then it would have been a much bigger success. But the retheming itself was enough to turn many original patrons away.
Yes the reedy creek improvement district should still exist because it allows Disney world to be unique and allows Disney world to bypass the red tape and build stuff that benefits them quicker than the competition
@@tylere.8436 Disney is special though. It has proven that it's district management is immensely better than putting the tax burden on taxpayers. Liberty is not always everything for everyone or no one gets anything, it's about having a baseline and then luck does it's work
Hey Rob! Great video! I tried to get here as early as possible so you could see my comment. Please read the whole thing: So in your Disneyland vs DW video I noticed you said that if you want rides more than anything, go to Disney World. Sorry, but being someone that goes to both parks regularly, I disagree. I'm a theme park ride guy. I go with the sole purpose of going on nicely themed Disney theme park rides. My opinion? Disneyland is WAAAAY better for people like me. and for two major reasons: 1. They have more rides and ALL of them are great quality. 2. It's a lot more compact over there so you can just walk straight form attraction to attraction and not have to worry about getting on Monorails going through security again, ect. You want rides? Disneyland wins by far. Just my opinion Rob, great video as always!
I agree with number 2, but number one is incorrect. Actually, I think you got the name wrong. I think you meant the Magic Kingdom, in that case you are correct (MK didn't include the less popular rides at DL. Note, Space Mountain was the MK answer to the Matterhorn, which was later added to DL). WDW includes not only the MK, but also Epcot, DHS, AK, Blizzard Beach, Typhoon Lagoon and Disney Springs, not to mention many resorts that have attractions as well (Ft Wilderness has horseback riding, hayrides and campfires). So many things to do that you can't do at Disneyland. Don't get me wrong, I love Disneyland, but it is small. Walt had bigger dreams, that is why he looked to Florida (even though his dream of EPCOT didn't come about the way he wanted). Walt said Disney World would hold all the dreams that they could ever imagine. It was his passion at the end of his life, I just wish he had more time!
Yeah, it has 4 parks... and much less rides per park. I'm sorry but it's true. I counted them myself. If you want better ride quantity and quality, Disneyland is better.
Adam what I like about WDW, there is more for adults to do. Even though the MK is for all ages, It's more for kids. Many of the rides at Disneyland I don't care for, not that they are bad, it's just they are more for kids. I like to visit Epcot and Animal Kingdom, I rarely go to the MK or Disneyland. They (MK & DL) are great quality parks, but I prefer something a little different and I am glad Disney built a diversity of parks at WDW. As far as quality goes, they are all Disney quality, there are differences, but that has nothing to do with quality.
If you somehow think European mountains or Western Frontier theming is for "kids" then there's California Adventure park at the Disneyland Resort. You'd love Paradise Pier!
I think the Matterhorn and western theming is cool. However, to me, Toontown, Story Book boats, Autopia, Dumbo, Mad Tea Party, Alice in Wonderland, Astro Blasters ,Astro Orbitor, Peter Pans flight and Mr Toad appeals more to kids. If there is one thing DL has that I would like to see in WDW, it would be the Indiana Jones ride, it is awesome. There is a rumor that it is coming, and will have it's own land. However, that is a rumor and I don't see it happening soon, as there are so many projects under construction presently.
Similar to Celebration, they de-annexed the Golden Oaks land from the RCID before selling the homes, so the owners aren't technically a part of the district.
That would be the representative from Miami. I couldn't find a verified reason, but my suspicion is they knew Disney would ultimately be competition for what little tourism the area already had.
I think Esmeralda, Megara, and Vanellope should be added to the Disney Princess line. Why haven't they been added yet, and do you think they ever will?
Good question! I'm not as well versed on the film universes as the parks, but I suspect it's because canonically they're not princesses right? Well, except for Vanellope who is I believe. Maybe if they reboot those films down the line we'll see it happen!
From a business standpoint Hercules didn't make much money at the box office, and while I'm not 100% sure I don't think Hunchback did either, and technically aren't princesses so they excluded them. Wreck it Ralph did well but Vanellope wasn't the star and wasn't a traditional princess. There's nothing wrong with that, but I think Disney wants to preserve the Princess line with characters that were the stars of their own movies with the fairytale theme for marketing and clarity purposes. I wish they made a similar line with the theme of Disney Heroines for the more action and non-main character characters though, there are a lot of cool non-princesses in disney's lineup that deserve the spotlight too!
Mulan isn't a princess either, Jasmine isn't the star of Aladdin, and Merida is from a Pixar movie, so she's DEFINITELY not a traditional princess, and yet ALL of them are part of the line-up. As for the not making enough money, The Princess and The Frog wasn't NEARLY the mega hit Disney wanted it to be, and yet Tiana is still part of the group.
You should check out SuperCarlinBrothers' video on snubbed Disney princesses. There's apparently a list of some guidelines that show who can be in the Princess franchise.
I always thought it was a play on the word "greedy" but Walt didn't want to tip his hand. LoL. Disney absolutely knew he would have to jump too many hoops if he didn't go this route. Kinda beat the politics by making him the President of his own land. Huge forward thinking. Saved Disney billions by now. No doubt. Now my issue with this idea today, those multi-million dollar homes. Wonder if Florida will be keen on those. Still only a few on property but we know those will grow in number. Kinda hidden out of sight but they are there. Great video !!

Disneyland just gets its own exit and property, but DISNEYWORLD GETS HIGHWAYS,THEME MINIPARKS AND MORE!
Yes the reedy creek improvement district should still exist because it allows Disney world to be unique and allows Disney world to bypass the red tape and build stuff that benefits them quicker than the competition
Either all companies should do so or no company, Disney isn't special.
@@tylere.8436 Disney is special though. It has proven that it's district management is immensely better than putting the tax burden on taxpayers. Liberty is not always everything for everyone or no one gets anything, it's about having a baseline and then luck does it's work
I wonder what it will look like without it.
Hey Rob! Great video! I tried to get here as early as possible so you could see my comment. Please read the whole thing:
So in your Disneyland vs DW video I noticed you said that if you want rides more than anything, go to Disney World. Sorry, but being someone that goes to both parks regularly, I disagree.
I'm a theme park ride guy. I go with the sole purpose of going on nicely themed Disney theme park rides. My opinion? Disneyland is WAAAAY better for people like me. and for two major reasons:
Time for part 2 now that universal studios Orlando got the same special district powers that reedy creek had
Love your videos. They are so interesting and informative.
Thanks! Glad you enjoy them!
very interesting = I have to agree with DSNY Newscast!
They Deannexed Celebration, but what about Golden Oak? Do those residents have a say in the governance of Reedy Creek?
Nope. That, too, was de-annexed from the district.
CRUSHED IT!
Another great one rob 👍🏼
Thanks!
@Rob_Plays Do you know what effect the residents of "Golden Oaks" have on elections in the RCID?
Similar to Celebration, they de-annexed the Golden Oaks land from the RCID before selling the homes, so the owners aren't technically a part of the district.
@@MidwaytoMainStreet Thanks!
Do you know the reason why someone voted no to this proposal?
That would be the representative from Miami. I couldn't find a verified reason, but my suspicion is they knew Disney would ultimately be competition for what little tourism the area already had.
His bag of cash got lost?
Not any more 😂😂😂
Great video!
I'm curious, do you know which representative voted "no" on the Reedy Creek Improvement District?
I am not sure, but I would say he was the smartest person in the legislature at the time.
Interesting thank you
They r trying to get rid of the district now
Trying it ? they're half way there!
@@Redsoxking true but y would they want to take over all of that debt and do that
@@jesset061084 no offical word but it will be taken over by OC
@@Redsoxking I know that but that would hurt them wouldn’t cuz then they would have to pay all of they debt am I right
I think it’s safe to say this will never happen again
Florida really got the sort end of that deal
I've been wondering lately, what music do you use for the background?
As for the not making enough money, The Princess and The Frog wasn't NEARLY the mega hit Disney wanted it to be, and yet Tiana is still part of the group.
googamp32 very good points, not sure then.
You should check out SuperCarlinBrothers' video on snubbed Disney princesses. There's apparently a list of some guidelines that show who can be in the Princess franchise.
👍
I always thought it was a play on the word "greedy" but Walt didn't want to tip his hand. LoL. Disney absolutely knew he would have to jump too many hoops if he didn't go this route. Kinda beat the politics by making him the President of his own land. Huge forward thinking. Saved Disney billions by now. No doubt.
Now my issue with this idea today, those multi-million dollar homes. Wonder if Florida will be keen on those. Still only a few on property but we know those will grow in number. Kinda hidden out of sight but they are there.
Great video !!
I think Disney would terminate it if they were loosing a lot of money that they would rather spend on something other than taxes
"and then, just like that.....phew......it was all gone."
RCID also massively imbalances Florida's Democratic processes.
I bet Elon Musk could do it if he were to try now.
He'll do it on Mars.
Nah. Disney was beloved and trusted. He was thoughtful and careful. You’ve got to lobby to get special government powers and then carefully follow the laws. Elon Musk is too prone to temper tantrums and impulsivity.
It's funny how much has happened/changed in the years since you've stopped making videos here on RUclips. Some of what you've put out is not applicable anymore. Maybe do follow ups to some of your videos to keep them up to date? Or...not. It's your channel only offering a suggestion. Miss the videos you used to do and there hasn't been a TTA podcast in quite a while. Hopefully you're doing okay.
Who voted against?
Great question! The representative from Miami. My suspicion is that they didn't want the competition that Disney was about to bring.
Who was he and can he be asked?
Given the time, l'm assuming a him.
Given that it was over 50 years ago and, the average age of politicians at that time I'm assuming he is are no longer with us.
I wish Disney had just kept it’s stupid mouth shut. What a Disaster -
Amen
Freedom of speech. And Citizens United, money is speech. Understand your point but is what the law says it is.
There's too much government regulation. We need more Reedy Creeks in the world.
