Great video, I have the same problem with my '06 GMC SIERRA, and been thinking about changing the gaskets myself. Your video will definately help me a lot.
Thank you for this guide. I just acquired a 00 Silverado 1500 2wd 5.3. 381,511 miles. Runs great no knocks, ticks. (Does tick/knock on quick cold startup but ive been told its due to oil pump is old and warming up?). Only codes are for 02 sensors. But it does have its faults. Has a good slow constant oil leak. Looks to be coming from the back of the valves covers. This look real easy. Simple. I love rock auto. Going to have to do this next weekend if the weather is nice. 😅.
@@tylerpollock6317 my 05 with 370,000 had a ticking noise when cold starting. Found out its from oil draining from the lifters when its not running. I started using a heavier weight oil (10-40 with lucas stabilizer) noise went away immediately. I switched back to 5-30 in the warmer weather, then noticed the thinner oil leaked faster through the valve cover gaskets (fixing this weekend) i talked to another mechanic in the area, he recommended to use 10-30. The thicker cold weight will keep it in the top of the engine longer and still perform as usual when it heats up. Hope that helps
Hey nice video! Couple questions tho, would it be better to clean off built up oil on the valve cover after you take off ignition coil bracket? Also can you do this job without using trans assembly, what if you have nothing, just the gasket, would that be ok?
Hello! Great video. Definitely have a better idea of what I need to do. My 05 Silverado is EATING oil fast. Could you do a video of how to convert the PCV valve? I’m thinking of replacing the valve covers on my truck. Is that how I convert the PCV valve? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks you!
Quick question I also have a gmc Sierra 1500 and I change the spark plugs and that took away the misfire but after a month the misfire came back again if anyone knows could it be that the valve cover gasket leaking into my spark plugs and causing that misfire? And if so would I need to change the spark plugs again?
Hello i have a 1999 GMC truck 2500 got white smoke coming out of the muffler and no ticking or knocking motor is 5.3 I'm asking for help to fix my truck
Same bro fixing my coolant leak and 02 sensors tomorrow then buying a whole gasket set and going to use my pto to do the head gaskets aswell and add my tbss intake with 50lb injectors.
I’m scared to do my daughter’s truck myself, so I’ll take it to the shop for this project but I’ll start doing small stuff at first because unlike you, I am a novice.
Maybe I missed the passenger side torque wrench the cover bolts because of speed???? Why was this not done to prevent future oil leaks? And i see both sides missed the being torqued down. Please don't teach people to not torque. Just trying to help, not knocking your video or you sir.
I'm having an intermittent knocking noise in my 2005 gmc yukon 4.8 . It's only when cold and goes away when warm. It sounds like a rocker or lifter Knock but how can something like that be intermittent ?? Very confused on this on and ain't got the money to take it somewhere.
Its a lifter that is knocking. Pretty common issue on 5.3l vortec. Make sure your oil level is on the high side. Mine knocks when cold and low on oil. Try marvels mystery oil.
@@mjmcomputers Nice I just did my valley pan gasket (found that the rear 2 bolts were loose and likely the cause of my leak). I still replaced the valve cover gaskets and also replaced the driverside with the new updated cover to help w/ oil consumption. It looks like my leak is gone but I'll need to clean the driveway of the old oil stains first.
My valve covers are shot. I drive it a mile and it’s blowing smoke when it hits the engine…02 Cadillac 6.0 engine with 280,000 miles …for a while the mechanic has been saying the rear main seal is leaking and he wanted $1900 to fix it but I’m not putting that type of money in this old of a vehicle but I really enjoy this SUV everything works it’s roomie and comfortable. I was just wondering could the valve cover be leaking also in the very back and it’s not the rear main seal…

Best video for doing valve cover gaskets yourself. So helpful! Thank you!
Great video helpful and informative. The Haynes manual says to remove the air cleaner intake which seems unnecessary from watching the video.
I've watched a couple videos because my 06 has 220,000 on it and yes its leaking. Good video thank you.
i have an 06 with 219k and they are PISSING

Torque the valve cover bolts to 106 inch pounds.
My '05 is leaking bad too. Thanks for this. Just have to figure out what transmission goo is.
Transmission goo isn’t necessary.

Did you replace the oil pan gasket as well and have you changed the shocks too

Yes you should
What are the correct torque specs for the valve covers? I’ve seen some that say 100 106 and like 78 or something like that
Did your check engine light come on for knock sensor after hosing it down
Yes it did.

How long does this normally take?
You make this sh... Look easy,
Just curious how long did it take you I know it’s been a year? Not including the cleaning portion Or inclusive the more info the better I suppose
I really don’t recall, maybe 2hrs in all?
@@mjmcomputers thanks
what is the torque on the bolts for the pan
Valve covers are 8ft lbs if I recall correctly.
@@mjmcomputers106 or 8?
@@flex2125 106 in lbs is close to 8 ft lbs, either is probably fine.
Was the grease to keep the gasket in place?
Transmission assembly goo
i’m nervous too see under my valve covers 😂
I have a 4.3 V6 2000 gmc sierra , will this work?
No it won’t.

is it the same process for a 4.3?
No it’s not

2003 5.3

wow so clean 200k miles how often you change oil ?
I just go by the oil life monitoring on the dash and just change it when it tells me to. I run Mobil 1 full synthetic.

You are correct, I just pinned a comment with the torque value.
About how long did this job take?
Maybe 2hrs including cleanup? Been awhile since I did it.
Did you say orifice pcv valve? Like is orifice the brand name? If so, where do I find one?
No, just instead of the normal style pcv valve, this one just has a small hole as known as a orifice.

Could be piston slap. Pretty common on these, mine does it.
Lifter tick
Could be an exhaust manifold bolt that is broken, they seal when the engine is hot.
