I discovered pornography in my home at the age of 8. By the time I was 12, I began seeking it out on my own on the internet. And by age 14 I was completely addicted to it, hiding, living in secrecy, lying, and swallowed up in shame for the next 13 years. Pornography destroyed my life. It decimated my relationship with the Lord. I tried quitting a million times. I thought I would be in chains my whole life. I thought my "story" will never change.
By the grace of God, I am 15 months free from pornography. I wish I never ever discovered it. And I wish I was taught the skills to know how dangerous to my life and soul it would be.
Today I am on mission to help other women who are trapped in this terrible addiction. It’s totally possible. I am praying for you all. Please pray for me.

Thank you for sharing your testimony with us and attesting to the grace that the Lord has for us if we seek Him and invite Him into our wounds and weaknesses. I am an ex-porn addict too, although I can"t remember the last time I watched it but the damage it causes is absolutely horrendous but where sin abounds grace abounds more. May God bless and to anyone reading this, never give up, freedom is possible so is healing but as Jesus said, without Him we can't do anything, let His love transform you and let yourself be loved by love itself.

Brothers and sisters… NEVER GIVE UP. The Lord our God is good. Have patience, endure. Fast, turn to communion in state of grace, pray the rosary. Receive confession 3 times a week, as many times as offered. Prepare your mind for the temptations of the evil one. Endure and you will find freedom. Rebuke the lies of Satan. You can do it because our God is with you. IT IS NEVER OVER FOR REDEMPTION. ITS NEVER OVER. ENDURE. I am praying for you. Pray for me.
This wasn’t a problem I had but it’s a problem of others I knew. I would consider it the pastime of a person who was called to married life but never found the right person.

3 times a week is not recommended by most priests in general. That would only make a penitent scrupulous. It also doesn’t show a sign of contrition.
Pope St. John Paul II was rumored to go to confession every day. It is far better to risk being scrupulous than to die in a state of mortal sin. Receiving God's grace through the sacraments is a blessing, and only the temptations of Satan would turn us against them. Also, only our God can judge a sign of contrition. Those suffering from addiction know the struggle. God bless.

I was introduced by my father around the age of 6. I then used it to cope with significant childhood trauma. I spent about 22 years addicted to the point of experimentation with homosexuality. I found Jesus in 2021 and He has helped me immensely. But it’s still such a battle every second of every day. It eats me alive sometimes. I’m ashamed to say after 2 years I relapsed multiple times. This video was so incredibly cathartic for me. I’ve never been told it’s not my fault. I thought I was a disgusting creature to my core. Thank you so much Father. Thank you so much Jesus.

A voice that yiu want to shut up, makes you angry, frustrating to hear ut creep up you again and again.

Cried to Him to help me fight this prowling beast that always lurks in the shadows to preys in us when we're at our weakest.

I’m begging to be free from this once and for all. I’m so close from where I was almost a year ago, but I still fall sometimes.
Sadly my curiosity lead me to pornography at age 10 to 11. Im a woman in my early 30s now. I always had my own computer. I do not think children should have their own computers or should be online all day. I still struggle with too much internet use. I have been active on chatrooms, forums, etc various ways of interacting with others online.
I think it is so much better to be playing with friends or engaging in sports rather staring at a computer screen
Every year for Lent I control my Internet use but I always FAIL.
Even if it not pornography, i find myself lingering too much on people's body parts.
Spend some time before the blessed sacrament for few months. You will see the change. Jesus loves you.Keep up the good fight.
One thing I know is to never use a computer for watching porn. I would get an internet virus, so it was a definite no for me. Instead i used my phone but i have time limits on apps like instagram where girls show bikini photos.

My largest hurdle with overcoming this addiction is the voice telling me "just do it and go to confession." Asking Jesus everyday to help me to love Him more than that desire has been amazing
I get you man. Lust is a sin that has taken over me many times. That voice of my mind saying or Satan saying “you’re going to confession later today, you’ve already committed the sin, committing it again won’t mean anything”, has overcome me many times. My big problem is that when I am tempted, the temporary pleasure seems better than listening to God so I give in and fell guilty after. As James 4:7 says
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. - James 4:7
I can totally relate. You brought up the thinking of "just do it and go to confession", that is timely since I just watched two other eye-opening videos from Father Mark Mary about this and the pit fall that it is. After putting in the disciplines, blocking the websites, giving the phone to friends, being in accountability, and even having had walked through victory over porn and masturbation for more than four years, I am back here again. Stuck. I felt so utterly done for when everything came back, reeling from the fact that my four years of freedom, to me, were seemingly not enough.
I am so tired of it all. I am so tired of the response just being to "keep fighting" or to "get back on track". If there's anything I've learned It's that all that is left for me to trust in is that I will be healed. That's all I feel I have any strength for at this point. Thank you for this video Ascension, I see the graceful compassionate heart of God through it all.

Every time I fall, I despair, it feels like, given the amount of times I fell, even God will run out of patience… but I’m constantly BLOWN AWAY at the fact that, no matter how many times I confess, the answer is ALWAYS “I absolve you of your sins in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit” and how Jesus always comes leaping to me! Just happy to be with me in the Eucharist!

I appreciate this compassionate message Fr. Mark. As the saying goes, the first step to solving a problem is acknowledging a problem exists. The problem with pornography is that it is often difficult to resolve a problem when many don't recognize that it is a problem. While pornography and masturbation can be critiqued for its pernicious effects, people just don't see it as an evil in the way murder, rape or theft is. Technology has allowed us to distance ourselves from the degradation of the human being on screen, to where we see the man or woman performing these sexual acts as merely a digitized fiction and not a person. We trivialize them the same way a kid looks at at a Call of Duty character that he has shot as not a real person, but as some electronic facsimile of a person. While intellectually, we know the difference, at the visceral level the transgression doesn't feel real.
There is no way you could have said all this, the way you did without genuine empathy gained from compassionate counsel to those of us who carry this shame. This video makes me believe you know me, it really struck me, I needed it. I've saved it and will watch it again to make sure your message doesn't escape me. Thank you.
A doctor told me to. Years ago. I thought I was over it. I fell into it 2 weeks ago one time, and I'm full of guilt. 😢

I was introduced to pornography in the 7th grade by a girl and ever since clicking on the link that was sent to me I've struggled. It led me down a oath of sex addiction in my later high school years and has really taken a toll on me. Its been over 10 years since I was introduced to it and I still struggle. I'm a single man who would hope to some day have a family of my own but even though I came to believe in Christ a few years ago its been very hard, in some ways its gotten harder. This video made me look far back on the roots of this addiction and has helped me with the thoughts of shame and guilt, thank you.

I am one of those people you’re talking about… I was introduced to porn at a very young age and continued to watch it regularly without even thinking about the damage it could bring. It seemed so normal, because everybody did it. I never really started to question my habit, which I now understand is an addiction (and has been for two decades without me even knowing it) before I became a Christian a few years ago. I have had to deal with several addictions through my life. Especially drugs and gambling. But porn is hands down the thoughest one to get rid of.
It’s like it’s become a part of my personality. It’s so deeply integraded in my being that it sometimes seems almost impossible to beat. But I keep trying. I try, I fall, I go to confession. That’s the pattern I’ve been living for quite a while now. With the grace of God I know it’s possible to overcome this, but man can it feel overwhelming at times. Thank you for words. I've most certainly struggled with pornography and was even sexually active as early as 12 years old. For me, it was a struggle of self worth and feeling starved for some kind of reprieve from depression that lingered with me from childhood into my early adulthood.
The majority of my problems manifested when I was separated from the Church. After reconciliation, I know definitively that I am loved, that I am wanted and that I am not an intrinsically bad or unworthy person. The Lord is present and we can turn to Him when we struggle. When we falter He forgives and accepts us. We may be imperfect but by His Divine Providence, we can overcome anything.

get into recovery and surrender. the issue with porn addiction is not that we arent trying hard enough (we all tried really hard and failed 100x).
the problem is that we are "maladjusted to life" - the words of AA.
im religious. i go to church most days as a catholic, but i found the principles of how to live life in 12 step recovery. somewhere along the line, our culture forgot how to live authentically. these lessons are *more basic* than religious lessons. its about how we are fundamentally disconnected from each other. learning to re-connect is the genius of 12 step recovery.
SA, SAA, SLAA, AA, etc.
I struggled with annoying and gross looking pop up ads for only a few hours one day on facebook before blocking every single facebook profile I could find that day. What infuriated both me and other women I know is how those human traffickers were assaulting all of us that day with ads we didn't want to see ever. Like my sister in law who was very annoyed that day too who is a school principle. It is the fault of advertisers who are human traffickers whenever they try to lay false guilt on some of us only for feeling something that we have never felt before when looking at only a pop up ad. The key is to not feel guilty about it while blocking them one profile at a time without fear.

I was introduced to pornography at the age of 5. Saw my first XXX film by 8 years old. I'm now 50. I went 10 years without pornography. I'm sadly struggling again. It's an evil that has such a strong grip on my life. I never asked for this addiction. Why I was cursed with it I will never know. I feel so much shame and guilt. I feel like Jesus has finally just given up on me with this addiction and moved on. Pornography addiction isn't a light switch that you can turn off and on. I gave up alcohol addiction and smoking cigarettes cold turkey. Been sober and smoke free 15 years this month. I wish pornography addictions was that simple. I've come to acceptance that I'm bound for hell because of this difficult and disgusting addiction. It’s hard to say this. But I feel like this addictions grip on my life is stronger than God's love. I just pray for God's mercy 🥺 🙏
I've struggled since the 5th grade. And I've surrendered to God. I still struggle, I repent. And I struggle some more. God will fix us in His time. Until then, we can only run from the lustful temptations, and when we succumb, surrender to God. Ladies and gentlemen who are struggling. Know we are learning our driving in a very hard school. But great is God's faithfulness. He will make us perfect.

I attended a meeting last night where the speaker was talking about how when the youth are introduced to vaping, they are not developed enough to control the surge of dopamine or pleasure that they get and so, they spend the rest of their lives searching for the hit that they originally experienced and as a consequence,live on with that continuous feeling of emptiness..
I curse the day I discovered it, and I hate the day when a kid taught me how to do that terrible action I was in 6th grade

Thank you Father for bringing up this topic that affects so many. It is an insidious tool of the evil one, on so many levels. I often try to include in my prayers people who are involved in this industry, and women who are victimized as a result. And the men and women, especially women, who make this content are often mistreated and degraded in horrible ways. Its truly a lose/lose situation for everyone.
Much can be said about this, but your words are true Father Mark: Jesus is here for us, no matter what. This definitely doesn't define us. Its an addiction and one can't usually just stop, as someone suggested. But for God nothing is impossible. With His grace we can rise above this. Prayer, the sacraments, the Rosary. These are our weapons.
The evil one wants us to feel guilty, less than, a failure, despicable, that's how he wears us down. God doesn't see us like that, because thats not what we are. It doesn't define us. Its a lie. We can rise above this brothers. I pray for all of you, please pray for me as well. God bless you all

If I had a decent girl in my life I would be able to beat these temptations without effort... but I had no idea adult life after college would just essentially involve being cast into a void of nothingness and zero social opportunities. There is nothing to look forward to other than slaving away just to pay bills to live a life I don't even enjoy living.
Friend, it is a lie that having a girlfriend will get rid of your sexual temptations. If you are not under control by yourself, it is unlikely you will be with anyone else. Also, consider looking for clubs to join to meet people. I don't know what kind of things you are interested in but I'm sure there is something you can do that is social. I took up ballroom dancing after college specifically to meet women. I found it worthwhile and fun.
I get the struggle, but the other comment is right that a relationship would not cure this issue. Use this time to build up chastity and self control. It's especially hard now because of all the free time and alone time. I'm in the same boat, got my own place and no girl. I want to get married someday but it's hard when I'm in my late twenties and want to find a Psalms 128 wife in this twisted society. I've placed all my hope in God because it can only happen by miracle but I want to be a good husband too which means chastity starts now.

Hey man I feel you but don’t give up hope. God knows how hard the fight is and all He wants is for you to believe in Him in all things, no matter how hard it gets. Keep on praying man and know you’re not alone. The Blessed Mother is there to lead you to her son, Jesus Christ. Ask for her mantle of protection and pray to her. She will intercede for you.

I was 8 or 9 when all of this started. It’s been a long drawn out battle with this addiction of mine, but by the grace of God, I’ve been able to not watch pornography for at least a couple of weeks at a time before I fall. And all of this is only getting better, it used to be every day! I got so complacent with it that I used to watch some really horrible and deplorable things, and now I want nothing but to run away from those things. Glory to God in the Highest! I am a work in progress, it just takes time, so I say, live and let God folks, and you’ll see how He works in your life
I have ocd and I struggle with intrusive thoughts on this especially when it comes to Jesus and the saints and all I can do is let it in because if I push it away it gets worse but my God it’s horrific.
Which is why they are trying to ban social media and sites like that under a certain age. It's been around forever though. In my days the 70s it was magazines and books and if a kid was lucky borrow dads car and go to the theater that showed xxx movies lol. I agree kids shouldn't view that stuff. I'm 59 and some of the things my buddies at work watch even shocks me 😮 it's come a long way since I was a kid. Weird perverted stuff nowadays. Not just sex really weird stuff

I think Mary is the answer to the problem. As you learn adoration for her it should transform into respect for all women. Pray the Hail Mary when you get the urge. This is not a new problem it has just became more prevalent with the introduction of the internet.

The first sexual assault happened at 7 years old. Its not easy. And God is a good loving caring and terrible God. It may have been horrible what i went through but life goes both ways. God is not nice. I say forgive them. God, my past to your mercy, my present to your love, and my future to your prudence. Words of Saint Padre Pio. Its been an on going battle for decades for me. DO NOT GIVE UP!! Take it one moment at a time and it does get better. It will never stop until God says when. I respect the process, accept it, and bow low to it. I do not understand. I will trust. One moment at a time. May this help you. Find peace and give it to yourself. Its ok to love broken. Do not love in pain there is not enough room.

sadly this has been a struggle after being abandoned by divorce many years ago. I am not young so even more shaming. Many middle aged and older still deal with lustful thoughts and behaviours. I suppose God gives the Grace for some to live happily celibate but for others the sexual urges are overpowering,,
Keep fighting. God calls some to work the field during youth, others He calls at mid age, others even during old age. But all are called according to His understanding, and will receive the same silver coin. He has a purpose for you in all this.

The reason why I suppose the sin of impurity is hard to overcome is because of how it affects the soul to the core. We were made to love and possess and to be loved and be possessed by God. The conjugal act mirrors the Trinity, from where the love of the Father and Son came forth the Holy Spirit. Mind you, the conjugal act between man and woman was designed to be pure and immaculate where by a simple kiss or embrace would have sufficed to bring forth a new life. But because of sin, the act of intimacy was limited to physical union. Man and woman were to possess each other, freely and exclusively, without being enslaved to each other. But sin corrupts the moral order, the natural design that man was to have. And now, instead of being detached, we are drawn to the opposite sex by desire, lust and passion. We are unable to govern ourselves without grace, which is why we're plunged into this sin, wanting more of it. Love in its pure form is insatiable, non ending, infinite, the same love that we're to have for God and the same loyal love spouses are expected to have for each other. Because of what a monster of a father did to me I haven’t properly cried for over 50 year’s and I believe one of the consequences of this is my pornography addiction as well as masturbation - I hate this horrible word but said it to own it. I found porn at a very young age about 8 years old and was hooked from thst point. I started to subscribe to of and use webcam sites by the age of 18, I used to sleep with escorts and it has truly ruined my life. I can't look at a women on the street without having sexual thoughts because of how much porn objectified women, I have started nofap but it is so hard to avoid the temptation. I pray to God I trudt in him but the devil always seems to weasle his way back in. When Icquit drinking I had AA to support me, to help me keep accountable but no such thing exists for porn or at least not near me. I am in the process of exploring religious life and this is my biggest concern. Lord give me the strengh to change.
Used to wack off regularly. Usually confessed it during a confession and go back to it. That was until a SSPX priest heard my confession. He gave me a right ear bashing. Been over a year since I wacked off. Feel so much better, spiritually, mentally and physically. Just stop doing it.
Especially for men, grace is not always applied with a soft hand on your shoulder and a consoling whisper. It sometimes is entirely appropriate, to be slapped upside the head and told STOP THAT!
@TGxHITMANx yep, I'm in my 50s and should really know better. I guess it was part of a routine. It's so accessible and in a way addictive. I was like a dog going back to his own vomit. Thank God I'm free of it.
I refrained from masturbation and watching porn for a year as well. This sexual abstinence took far more discipline than any other form of restraint I ever encountered. This is coming from a guy who abstained from eating food for about 5 straight days, several times a month, for nearly 6 months. I found that turning away from self-stimulation and pornography more cumbersome than these brutal fasting periods! The thing is, I didn't feel an improvement when I practiced sexual abstinence. Quite the contrary. During that year of refraining from both pornography and masturbation, my mind would venture *MORE* towards lustful thoughts. Eventually, after a year, I gave up and reverted back to my old ways. Lord help me.

If he wanted to tell us so bad then he actually would...you know like with an actual audible voice that we can actually physically hear. After all, thats what "telling" means. it's something he would do if he was actually real and actually cared about us.
That goes with everything, not just something many of us get hooked onto because he designed us incorrectly... highly susceptible to addiction for no good reason. Just one of the countless various aspects of life and our biology that are **unnecessarily** difficult.

I’m gonna come out and say it cause I’m not waiting to comment asking for celebration and tell my story of quitting. I’m still struggling with pornography since I was 9. I mean seeking and knowing how to do it since I was 9. I’m 21.
I’m not far from faith. I’m strengthening my walk with Christ in every aspect but I haven’t put this completely behind me. It’s been that bad, that I can’t make it a week. And I mean if I was lost and not redeemed, it would be multiple times a day as much as I want, fear of the lord pushes it out to four days if I’m focused. I haven’t known the proverbial 20 days free from this since before I was 9, that’s unbroken.
I’m drawing closer to God, I hate my sin, and not cause I think I’m forsaken every time, because I don’t love the world or my flesh, I don’t. But my flesh loves my flesh, and most of the world is telling us young men that it’s actually good. My battle of lust has actually become a desire for the feeling to go away, and failing means doing it gets me there faster. This is what I hope in, cause I know I don’t want it but it wants me.
I write all this angsty garbage not for myself, but for everyone who isn’t coming out and saying it. We’re not out of the woods yet, pray for those who are ashamed to bring their sin into the light, for if anyone should sin, we have an advocate with the father: Jesus Christ the righteous

Porn/masturbation are nasty effects of chronic loneliness, isolation, and even alienation! Even though we all should have a personal relationship with God, even more so than with anybody else, but even God wants us to form right ordered relationships with other people! Unfortunately we’re not! I can’t tell you, despite trying my best to, how extremely hard it still is to make friendships, even with people of my own religion! It’s very sad!

I can say first hand that unrestricted access to the internet starting at a young age is not as nice as it seems. When it comes to lust, a lot of the time your only winning move is not to play, and when you're a young child rapidly absorbing information from the internet, sometimes you fall into it's trap without knowing until years later. One way I describe it is that it's like catching catfish by "noodling" (Yes, this is a real term for fishing for catfish). You stick your hand or foot into the catfish den to get the fish to bite so you can pull the fish up. But, if you get unlucky, you find your hands in the mouth of a rather irritated snapping turtle that's stronger than the catfish you expected. If you're lucky with the snapping turtle, you can get it off before it can do more damage, but past a certain point - especially if you don't try to get it off - you've lost your fingers to the thing. If you try your hardest to pull yourself out of commitment to the sin, you got yourself a good chance at "keeping your fingers" and not going further with the act. But if you don't try to stop it at all, and you commit to the sin, then you "lose your fingers". If you don't learn the first time around, and keep doing it over and over again, you may even find yourself losing your entire right arm to sin. that's not true... No one creates something only to hate it and beat it up. Sometimes we start creating something and we end up not liking it in the proccess... But God is omniscient, He knows all things and He's omnipotent, He can do all things. So why would He create something He hates? Makes no sense. He loves you dearly. I don't know what happened to you but you seem to have a wrong view of Him and maybe you mistook for Him things that were not from Him

Saint Francis in his life constantly repeated that he was the greatest of sinners and the most vile of creatures, and I believe him. Only God knows the depths of our hearts and intentions, so we should not be scandalized when someone sins, be it a layperson or a bishop. We must always pray for them, and recognize that they are sinners like us, no matter at what hierarchy they sit before God.
