This Is the Christian Solution to Vanity

- Vanity is not what many people think it is. It can come in many forms, and is not necessarily an infatuation with yourself. Vanity is an inordinate preoccupation with what other people think about you-which is different.
It’s important, to an extent, to care what others think about you. It can even be charitable. But when this care becomes unbalanced, it leads to neglecting more important things.
Wanting to be noticed can be vain, but not wanting to be noticed can also be vain. When you shrink back and don’t want anyone to look at you, it can be a form of vanity or false humility; because not wanting to be seen can be an indication that you care an inordinate amount about what people think of you.
Vanity can also cause an unwillingness to share the Faith. Many times we think sharing the gospel will make people think less of us. How many times has the thought of what other people think prevented you from sharing the Faith?
Balance is pertinent in every aspect of vanity, and the best way to achieve that balance is to care about what God thinks of you above all.
These sayings about humility really sum it up well, since humility is the antidote to vanity:
“Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less” (Rick Warren, The Purpose-Driven Life).
“If you meet a really humble man … He will not be thinking about humility: he will not be thinking about himself at all” (C.S. Lewis).

" Dont think less of yourself, think of yourself less" C.S.Lewis
Woah that's interesting
wow thanks
Better is Think always about God... If we focus on God, we think less of other things, including ourselves
'Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it's thinking of yourself less'
I've been a Protestant my entire life, but Father Mike Schimtz is seriously making me rethink it. I can't stop watching his videos.
Bryce Mitchell God bless you as you start wrestling with Catholic teaching! There’s also Matt Fradd and Christopher West give good little talks on RUclips.
I'm on the journey too, brother.
There's so much to learn. The more I seek, the closer God brings me to the truth
In reality, all church institutions are somewhat fallen right now. We have a duty to resurrect the faith here on Earth.
We are saved by faith alone, yes. But what are we called to do on Earth?
We aren't *just* called to be saved. But to be soldiers and servants to God.
First of all, BE WELCOME. We rejoice that non-Catholics are giving a serious chance to our faith.
Second, you're not alone in this one. Many have walked the same path, some are even here in this comment section. One might be speaking to your right now in these words ;)
May God aid you in the search for the Truth. Mind to share what's your background?
I made the journey myself and it's 3 years now since I became Catholic from being born and raised Presbyterian. It took me 6 years but it was probably there 10 years earlier. The most crucial thing is to be a lover of Truth and to say to God every day, Lord here I am ask whatever and I will follow.
I can relate! I was in your shoes about 3 years ago... and I am proud to say I am Catholic now! Best decision I ever made! 😉
Me, with low self esteem and thinking vanity was the least of my problems, after watching this: 👁👄👁
Cassandra Campbell - same...
Geez, me too. This was so eye opening.
I wish i could be vain!! I always wanted to be beautiful!!
@@jamesgonzales7994 you are already beautiful, I am sure. Maybe what you think or may want is to be "beautiful like..." or "as beautiful as...". And its ok, i have been there, done that. But in reality we must stop comparinh ourselves and start being content with ourselves. Easy said than done? Yeah but not impossible. I started by naming one thing I liked about me, being more gently to myself and slowly, I found a few more things I liked about myself and understood that i was already beautiful but that comparing made it impossible to me to see it. Baby steps.
Me too!!
It is so difficult to realize the only opinion whose matters is Christ's.
Amen
And I see Christ's teachings magnified in Father Mike Smitz
Yes. Good thing i saw this video.
Sorry this is late that is true because if our society and the word we live in it can be difficult
And what is Christ's opinion on what kind of tires I should get? Maybe he has an opinion on whether I buy a generator for when the power goes out? Most American Christians wouldn't know Christ if he whipped them out of their scam churches. His opinion will be "I never knew you.".
Nope. Not a problem for me. Installed it all by myself no problem right under the new bathroom mirror.
Oh that kind of vanity...
Dang I'm a very vain man. Someone pray for me.
Pray the rosary and watch the promises unfold in your life. Google 15 promises of the rosary
Dont worry we are all in this as chirstians!
I struggle with it too please pray for me too!😁
I am struggling with this as well. I really do not evangelize out in public(and at home) because of what other people may think or say to me. When it comes to evangelizing to others, I have the perception of people saying something negative and threatening me and getting mad. Someone pray for me too please.
Count on it 😉
I just finished praying and asking Mary to pray for me to help me with not being afraid to share my beliefs... then this video pops up.
Couldn't be more perfect.
God is still at works, and He works in amazing ways✝️🙏
i feel you!
I think I may understand. I fear being seen as religious.
@Alex Higgings you're supposed to go through Jesus only. John 14: 6 "Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well." You can't pray to Mary to get to Jesus to get prayer answered. You can only go through Jesus. Catholics are sinning when they pray to Mary and saints. You can't twist scriptures to suit your false beliefs. I am a former catholic.
You praying to Mary just cancels everything that Jesus came here for. He didn’t sacrifice himself for the world just so you can pray to His mother- who can’t hear you as she is DEAD.
King Solomon talks about vanity also being linked to worrying about what happens to your life’s work, earnings, and home.
In Ecclesiastes? There he means vanity as in doing things in vain, futility.
I wish you could see the painful grimace I am wearing on my face right now at the thought of how I feel this message was directly for me lol UNCOMFORTABLE.
Tiffany we are all on a path toward Christ. The more you turn toward God, ask and rely on Him to lead you, you are okay. Peace be with you
Can be inherited .
“Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven”
Hi peeps ! I'm having a very nice day today ! God bless us all in this situation of weird and strange times.
Social media is making vanity even worse. I deleted my social media platforms when we (the UK) went into lockdown,on 16th March. I feel much better for it and feel more connected to reality. Best move I've made. Won't be going back to it. Stay safe everyone.
Daniel Harper
In my opinion that's a very wise thing to do.
It really is.
But, shouldn't we use our wisdom to balance the things than to wipe away completely ?
I love this.. mine has been deleted full time since 2019, but i spend way too much time on youtube lollll
hahahahaha great intro with that joke Father!
@HayakazeKorona hahahaha me too, looking for help for my vanity problem and Father Mike totally strikes back
" I am as I am in the eyes of God. Nothing more, nothing less." St. Francis of Assisi
Thank you, Father Mike, for making this understandable and doable. I needed to hear this! Especially since I am an introvert. Really makes me think. I want to care about what God thinks!
Blessings!
Wow, I just asked God to reveal my faults and boom, you did it. Thank you Jesus. I'm the quiet one that wants to hide out alone bc I'm so afraid of what people think of me. I thought I was shy but no, I'm inordinately concerned about what others think of me. Mercy Jesus.
God bless you Fr. You are in my daily prayers. You brought my girlfriend back to the Catholic church.
Who else is scrolling through the comments with that song in their head
Then realizing I missed half the video
My looks is definitely something I've somewhat obsessed over since reaching my 20s. Now that I'm reading the Bible and learning about everything, I want to stop being so vain. I used to cut my own hair twice a week, with a crispy fade and line up my beard. Now I'm shaving my beard with the trimmer and giving myself a buzzcut. To me this is a big step back, a more modest look. Tackling each sin and commandment one at a time. Maybe I will grow a modest beard, I do like myself with a beard. Or is that me being vain again? This will be tough but I can do it!
"For my own part I should like my devout man or woman to be the best dressed person in the company, but the least fine or splendid, and adorned" - St Francis de Sales
ClarkKasheta "things that make you go 'huh?"
@@Sbannmarie They mean (best) dressed in Christ.
I’m reminded of CS Lewis’s comment that the glutton can as easily be 100 lbs as he or she can be 300 lbs...
Yeah, unfortunately that's true
Little but lethal, that is what makes vanity a fatal flaw of our conduct.
Thank you, Fr. Mike, for explaining so well.
It was very helpful. And yes i would be the one avoiding everything because of my vanity.
Loved this. I had to do a self-examination a few months back because I am a creative person and enjoy dressing with bright colors and some makeup. I really questioned myself if it was in vanity because many religious people dress the opposite of that. But I did it in the way you described the person with the hair in the video - left the house that way and didn't really think of it again. Shifted my focus on thoughts of what God thinks about me overall and that is what I believe helped decrease my vanity, not changing the way I dressed if it was modest and appropriate.
I can't tell you how much these videos mean to me and how encouraging & insightful they are. Thank you Fr. Mike!!
I don't struggle much with what people are going to think of, or about me. Not like that. When I was younger, I was definitely preoccupied with it. But then again, that cane after many years of abusive bullying by dozens of classmates.
I was literally stressing about being too vain last night. I was looking for videos on YT and didn't find one and then here it is. 😔
Caring too much about what others think is part of why so many people are falling away from the church. This video is needed now more than ever, Father. Thank you!
I often wonder if he studied psych. A lot of his videos are incredibly astute.
He seems to very intuitive :)
Holy Spirit will teach you things which Psychology can’t and remember he hears confession.
The Catholic church has 2 000 years of wisdom (+ the wisdom from the jewish people). It has let some time to observe people's heart !!
This is one of the crazy thing about our time, we don't realize how the church (through the tradition, the many writing of saints, ..) is "THE" expert in human kind, psychology and all.
Though obviously being a priest does not mean he knows 100% of the church wisdom (and nobody could, it is so rich..) yet, it helps ! Vanity is certainly not a recent struggle.
I love his videos though because I know very little myself so I find it so great that someone make it in an easy and accessible format for me.
@@fouinyff6792 I also find at times the bible has many great teachings. ( Not sure of the catholic bible, but since I am holding a protestant one) but Fr mike is really interesting a priest indeed. Never fails to amaze me.
Oh my gosh. That just blew my mind. Being the Center of Attention AND not wanting any attention both come from the same source; caring too much about other people's attention. That's a truth bomb.
Wow 😮 God’s timing is perfect. I flip flop between the 2 types of vanity. You just put it all in perspective for me. Thank you and God Bless
Thanks father. Being catholic is never boring with you ❤
Never really thought of it this way, but I can also see how it can make sense
I'm going to resign from work sooner than later..
I came back to reflect on this.
Thank you Fr. Mike.
Thanks for this video, Fr. Mike! It made me think about CS Lewis’ on pride in Mere Christianity. “It is very right, and often our duty, not to care what people think of us, if we do so for the right reason; namely, because we care so incomparably more what God thinks.” And then also “a proud man is always looking down on things and people: and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you.”
How do I trust in Jesus?? Why don’t I get that He loves me and cares for me? Even when He DIED on A CROSS, ROSE FROM THE GRAVE, CONQUERING MY SIN, EVEN THOUGH HE TOLD ME? why do I do this. Why do I sin all these and yet I ignore and forget and neglect Him? Why don’t I want to pray? Why do I feel alone even though I know He cared and loves me and is with me? Please help me.
We all struggle ...even St Paul and the greatest saints did ! conquering sins is a daily fight we will have until death ! There is nothing easy in rejecting sins and having a rich prayer life. Only with the graces of God and a bit of self-discipline for prayers we can slowly improve..I strongly advice going to daily mass if you can (or as many as weekly mass as you can) since receiving the Eucharist is a huge help to reject sin, step by step. Go often to confession even if you don't like it (and huh, who likes it before going?..). The daily rosary is also a great way. Mother Mary is so helpful to conquier sins, especially impurity. It's okif sometimes, you're distracted, fall half asleep or whatever..she sees your faithfulness. God sees that you are trying. Again, you will need patience but God gives all the graces we need through prayer and sacrement. Be smart, avoid any temptation you can, make decision in your life to put God at the center.
I feel the same time to time 😔 finally someone who can get what I feel. But i know it's going to be hard so let's not give up on him, my friend.
What are we trying to do be the best looking in the coffin. The soul comes before the body, the soul goes on living, we only have the body to hold the soul while we go through this journey. Forget about how you look and make sure your soul is shinning
Soldier 4 Christ The body and soul are intricately connected!! You are wrong in saying we only have the soul in heaven. In the bible and Catholic teaching are bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit and we will be reunited with them at the end of time.
@@stephaniehowe997 yes i know but i was trying to hammer home that how a person looks is absolutely of no importance, it's the soul that we should be concerned with
Soldier 4 Christ . I agree that the soul should be are number 1... but to neglect are bodies by not working out and feeding it properly is not right also
Wow! This came into my feed exactly when I needed it. I have been struggling with vanity and I had no idea. I didn't want to be seen. I care too much about what other people think. I was constantly comparing myself to others. It was like I wanted to wear a mask to hide myself. Thank you so much, Fr. Mike! Your videos have helped me to learn so much.
As a non-religious believer in God, I really appreciated this deeply. Thanks for the deep words.
Yes, lol, I know this song. Thank you so much for this video. I love HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) and of course the side effect is that you feel fit and look fitter, but that is not the reason why I do it, I love how it releases stress and I just like to look after my body, because that is what God gave us. I feel like I need to look after it and working out is part of it,. I am so happy that Father Mike Schmitz addressed this. Hope everyone is safe and well and sending so much love and prayers to everyone.
Father... it IS about me... hahahahhaha!!!! thank you for your videos!!! so awesome!
I struggle with vanity a lot, it's been such a mental burden lately. Lord, deliver me from deliver me from the spirit of vanity, for I'm no longer a slave to sin because of Your love. Amen! Father Mike - thank you for this message, I didn't know how much I needed this
Oh wow 😯 I never thought about vanity like this! Thankyou so much Father Mike. I have always struggled with being overly concerned with what others think... I really need to work on that.
Now I understand!! THANK you father!!!! Love you GOD BLESS YOU! BTW you are really handsome!!! But not in a vain way! Honest!
Keep it up Ascension Presents!
I love how Father looks into the camera, almost like he's speaking directly to us :)
Thank you for the Word, Father Mike!
Thank you. This is amazing ✨
Thank you. Very insightful
Thank Father Mike. God Bless You!
Because of this one random video, I have stopped worrying about offending people when I give all glory to God for what he delivered me from. I've been able to add him to my conversations in a way thats not preachy, but giving him the glory he deserves. You really helped me get my head straight and people aren't as upset as I thought they would be. I converse with the mentally ill a lot and it's going well!! It makes me sad thinking about all of the lost opportunities due to being afraid of upsetting people. TY!!!
i really needed to hear this
Thank you so much Father Mike.

I have just discovered you thank god for you. Your heart is bursting with joy for god and it comes through in your videos and talks. Your advice has answered many questions I had growing up in my first 73 years.
Thank you Father Mike :) your videos are like a beam of sunshine on a rainy day!
I should tatoo this teaching on my hand: Care more about what God thinks.
Father Mike!!!!!!!!
Thank you
Wow, did you ever hit the nail on the head! Especially the "don't look at me" side of it. A+!
Another excellent vid!
