Full Story:: My Parents Looked Down On My Bf Not Knowing They Worked For Him ☹️🔨👷 I (25) has been dating a guy named Eric, we had been dating for a year when I decided for the big meet up with my parents. My parents both work in the same company and are construction managers. I was nervous about it because my parents tend to be over protective and quite judgmental. They actually bonded over shared interests so it was going smoothly. The atmosphere shifted when the topic of careers came up. My parents assumed that he was a lower level worker when he said he was in construction. It was a misunderstanding my bf didn’t correct because he wanted to be liked for him. The convo took an awkward turn when my dad brought salary into the conversation. Eric told my parents that he made $25/hr, but that he choose a job he loved over an amazing salary or the best position. My parents sneered at my bf and told him that he wouldn’t get far in life, since I am a lawyer. They told him how I make twice as much and he should be the breadwinner. I joined the convo and told my parents to STOP and they began to unapologeticly apologize and laugh saying it was over the line. Eric kept his composure and changed the conversation topic. My parents as we were leaving mentioned that they might run into him since they all work in the same industry. Eric have a gracious smile and said that it was a small world in the industry and agreed. Once we got into his car, I immediately began to apologize for my parents rude behavior. He said it was okay and pulled out his phone and showed his screen. He said he always knew my last name was familiar and had just confirmed that my parents worked for him. I continued apologizing to him and asked what was going to happen. He said not to worry and that my parents were just great assets to him. Not far after my parents called me and asked me to bring them their lunches at work. I told them I was with Eric and they said they wanted to see him as well. A mix of apprehension and curiousity swirled in me as I hung up. Eric said it would be fine, squeezed my hand reassuringly, let’s go see them. We went and sat down at one of the outdoor tables and waited 10 minutes for both of them to come. During the conversation my parents told Eric about their experiences as project managers and that if he worked hard that he could eventually be like them; successful. My bf listened to my parents as the shared all their sights from their work. Eric listened very well and nodded respectfully. As we where about to leave, he thanked my parents for sharing, and told them it was inspiring to see their passion for their jobs and the company. My parents smiled and probably assumed that he was an eager young worker. Eric then decided he should clarify his position. He said that he thought their was a misconception in is role in the construction industry, while laughing nervously. My parents looked confused and asked him what he ment. He then explained he was the owner of the company, and he told that he didn’t correct them because he wanted to see their perspectives and wanted to get to know them without preconceptions getting in the way. He a knowledged their roles and said they made amazing contributions to their projects. My parents expressions changed to embarrassment, and they apologized for their behavior the night before. My boyfriend was gracious and accepted the apology, and he appreciated them. He didn’t want titles to define their relationship and the atmosphere lightened significantly. My parents then began to want to invite him over ALL the time, to family vacations, etc. And they want to make amends. I asked Eric if he kept it a secret because he knew they would treat him differently. He said yes, and I apologized even more. He said it was okay, but I feel bad.
