    The best thing about a Floyd other than the way it stays in tune is the ability to salvage a broken string within a minute or two by allowing extra slack for a break. Unlock and pull some down, re lock, fine tune and you're good. I think many people don't appreciate or maybe even know this little old school gem.

      Now that the relationship between dean and the dimebag estate is possibly over, I'm finally getting a dimebolt after having it on my must have list for 25 years. Lol I appreciate the tip. This will be my first Floyd rose guitar, and I'm trying to learn as much as I can before it arrives. I do all my own work on my guitars, so I'm curious to see how I'm going to adjust to working on a Floyd. I've heard they were a pain in the ass, but they LOOK fairly straightforward to me.

      @@love.peace.joy. Super easy, when initially installing a string leave extra slack on the tuner end of the guitar, you either want wind it up or do a loop which you can sometimes see on old school players with Floyds. Anyway, when the string breaks simply unlock the "nut" (3 hex screw) then unlock the bridge where that particular string sat, and remove the broken piece. Pull down the extra slack from the tuners until you have enough to reach the bridge and re-lock the bridge. Tune up before locking the "nut" again, ( Also like to tune up just slightly flat before re-locking the nut because the pressure always brings it up slightly sharp) Now that you have re-locked simply "fine tune" and you good to go..this technique can be done multiple times with the same string. It's also helpful before locking the nut to make sure the fine tuners are all at a 50/50% level allowing movement up or down without maxing out. Hope this helps!

  • @letzrockitrite8469
    @letzrockitrite8469 4 года назад +121

    It'd be helpful to mention that when the nut block is removed before putting it on and locking it down... now's a good time to adjust the fine tuner all the way out except for ( and this is personal preference ) one FULL turn. As the strings stretch you'll always be turning it in. Thanks guys

    If you care...since 1985 I've been stringing my Floyds by running the ball end through the tuner hole (not cutting it off). I never remove the locking nut plates. Much faster, and I've never had to worry about how many windings I get around the tuner.

    • @efa666
      @efa666 4 года назад +10

      This is the best advice I've ever received about owning an FR. Most tuning instability comes from bad windings settling, this method guarantees instant stability.

      Me, not quite since 1985, more like 1991, but totally agree - ball end on the tuner on all my Floyds. This video is well-intentioned but woefully lacking in some important tips and details: stuff like going to different string gauges needs extra attention, including resetting the claw and the fine tuners and the intonation. Well-intentioned, slickly produced of course - but needed to be at least twice as long to provide the very best information.

    Love my Floyd equipped guitars. If you’re a Floyd fan and looking for a handy hex wrench, Floyd Rose sells this new tool called a HexHider which hides the hex on the guitar and is great for string changes AND for resetting the fine tuners as the strings stretch or change in temp at an outdoor gig. Great for stage. I won’t gig without one.

Anyways I was scared to change the strings for months and almost sold the guitar due to the FR. I am a hvac mech and I thought the task of a FR string change would have me still playing lawyer blues and C standard doom dentist blues on my gibbons. It was easy and I feel silly. I bottomed out the fine tuners and just used the same string gauge as was on the guitar before ..One string at a time . Tuned it flat ,tightened the nut clamps and then tuned using the fine tuners. This is why I'll never get a Floyd Rose tremolo. I had one for a short time. But, did not like it. The pros didnt outweigh the cons. I think Kahler does circles around it. Ive had one since '85. The tuners have a wider range. You can drop D right from the bridge with ease. MUCH easier to restring and the tremolo is much smoother both up and down. You can even finish a song with the guitar if you break a string. Try doing that with a Floyd Rose. Anyway, it's either gotta be a Kahler or no trem.

    I think there's a great business opportunity for someone who can invent a better way to do this. Busting a string is a major PITA on a gig, which is why I leave my Jackson w/Floyd home.

    • @Dejoblue
      @Dejoblue 4 года назад

      Just use plenty of windings around the pegs; since most string breaks occur at the bridge on a Floyd you can unwind more string, reinsert the string back into the bridge, lock it down again and rig up a functional string again.

      @@zoomzoom3950 Always a smart move. I guess if I played a style of music which required locking trems, I'd need more than one of them.

    There has to be a locking system that does not require cutting off the ball ends of the strings.

    Why the heck do you remove the nut blocks? They only need to be loose enough to get strings in and out. No need to remove all the way

    This video made me mad cause people always talk about how hard and scary changing a Floyd rose is. And it literally made me not to want even buy one when I was younger. Now I have one and it’s been this easy the whole time???? This is why you don’t listen to other people and just go with your own gut and experience

    Poor video. You didn't tell people to turn the fine tuners to the center again so you can tune up or down as needed. Also, you needed to show how to change ALL the strings simultaneously by blocking the Floyd Rose tremolo properly. What to use to secure the bridge and how to either buy it or make it. Thanks :)

      Can be rewarding once you figure out how to string it properly and set them up for good. But I restrung my les-paul in about 5 minutes the other day and I'm Loving life without a Floyd

      @@bepis647 exactly. I regretted my fr strat even though I got it for a steal and that feeling took awhile to go away. It feels restrictive not being able to turn the tuning machines and it took forever to set up when I first got it because it was all screwed up. Now out of 23 that same strat is my go to for any standard tuned songs because I know that it's stable, durable, versatile (hss with a JB) and above all always in tune. I would never own a fr as my only guitar but I don't think I'd ever maintain a collection without at least one fr because of the reasons I mentioned and the fact that there are just some things you can only do with a floyd
