    I'm a B3 guy/piano but I have owned and played guitars for 60 years...always dreading changing strings on my SG or Les Paul..this video was 100 percent useful to me...I went out and changed my sG string in a record 30 minutes with no mistakes...thanks bro.

    You can change strings? I’ve been burning the guitars and buying new ones for decades. Thanks for this Premier Guitar!

    I’ve been restringing my own guitars for 12 years and this video was still helpful. I do a few things differently but, there are some great tips. I’ll recommend that you take all the strings off first so that you can properly clean the places you can’t reach when you’re strings are on. And cut the old strings as close to the tail piece as possible, so you don’t drag all the dirt through the string holes and cause that stickiness when you try and put the new string back through. Cheers 🤘

    Just a tip* On the treble strings (right side tuners) it’s easier if you start from the bottom ( high e) and work your way up to winding the g string. This way those strings don’t get in your way.

    Thank you, I am a new entry into guitar. I have strung and played a few, but I always misunderstood when someone said to use the 2nd fret to help with where to start tension before winding it up. You did a great job of showing that you had to grab it and drag it to figure out where to start. Time to restring my guitar. :)

  • @djg9589
    @djg9589 4 года назад +4

    I always use a bit of rag or fast fret cloth to pull on the strings to stretch them in a bit. This for me avoids the strings going out of tune continuously until they’ve stretched themselves enough.. good video though 👍🏻

  • @antmeeks3117
    @antmeeks3117 6 месяцев назад +2

    Clip the excess string beyond the post off BEFORE winding. Otherwise the sharp string ends will scratch the nitro finish on the headstock face as you wind the tuners. Notice that this very thing happens here at 2:04. The string end gets caught on the A & G posts, then whips around scratching the face as he continues to wind.

    I consider locking tuners mostly a convenience for quick changing strings unless you're using a non locking tremolo. When I started in the 80s, I don't remember anybody doing the over under stringing. And we stayed in tune no problem.

  • @joeryan1578

    On those tuners Gibson published a way to lock the string on the tuning peg. I got the information on a Gibson card from the early 70's. I have used the method ever since and you don't need locking tuners. The way you are showing it will make it less stable

      Gibson did many things the wrong way, as long as you have enough wraps on the tuner, and the tuner gear is properly maintained you wont have tuning issues. The top lock wrap method you are referring to, as well as any method that knots the string just makes it harder for the tuner to do its job properly. Thats my opinion, but I am a professionally trained luthier that works on guitars every day.

  • @danhines2296
    @danhines2296 4 года назад +20

    This way you will have slipping strings and tuning problems. First wind above the string and the remaining go under. This wraps over it's self and locks the string.

    Seeing how easy to restring, and how comfortable to use these type of guitars are, it makes me wonder. Why *wouldn't* you choose this kind of guitar whenever given the choice? Is there actually a benefit to other body types? Because this has always seemed ideal to me.

    I really hoped you would have went into more detail maybe on some tips to avoid the lighter strings from coming unwound. I’ve seen some do it by bending the end to be wound a certain way but I never seem to do correctly. Guess I’ll have to find a video with better explanations and tips 🤷🏼‍♂️

    I bought a used Epiphone Les Paul, that came with a handbook (the guy saved everything, even the box). There's an instruction in the handbook in how to change the strings. It's a bit different than in this video. You cross the strings in a way so the string is locked by itself. It's diffcult to explain, there are videos on RUclips that show how it's done. Anyway, that type of re-stringing works really well on that guiter. The guitar stays in tune so well, it's surprising for a Les Paul, because they do have a rumor about them going a bit out of tune.

  • @matthewf1979

    No such luck with Kluson style tuners with press in bushings. They’ve always required one wrap above the string hole to get more than two wraps on wound strings.

    As the video shows, make sure you press the heavy gauge strings onto the headstock while winding so after a few changes it starts to dig into the veneer. It will then be ready for inserting a lit cigarette onstage which will leave it burnt & charred.

      Greg Lawrence dude it’s a guitar, it’s meant to be used, it’s meant to be played, and yes, it’s meant to get scratched, you’re gonna have a stroke trying to keep your guitars in grade a factory condition.

I know all about it, but I don't think you should intentionally degrade or abuse such fine instruments. - after all this abuse, I highly recommend trying to keep your instrument in as fine shape as possible, and not gouge the veneer intentionally, whether unwittingly or not. @@OtherJesus True,even when I tried my hardest to keep it mint something like accidentally I would ding or scratch the breadstick or body.It's a guitar,no matter how much you try,overtime it's inevitable.Wear will happen.putting it in it's case locked up like in a safe can even cause damage.My headstock under the Gibson Logo has part of it where it turned pink from the case's cover from gasses released from the logo.I got it like that but it could happen to anyone.So I must agree.Take care of it but don't treat it like a baby.I polish it when needed,oil the fret board once in a long while,and clean the pots with deoxit as from letting them sit causes them to not work properly and get scratchy or sometimes don't work properly...🤘🏻
