    subnautica is one of the only games I've played where you have no idea how long you're playing. It's so easy to get immersed and end up playing much longer than you planned

      Yesterday, playing Below Zero, I had an interesting experience of immersion. I was in the moonpool of my base unloading the prawn, and the lights went out, and I had the immediate knowledge "oh the power went out" and looked around my living room to realize, "right, my computer is on, that's in the game"

      you mean like when I first got the game around 9 PM in the evening and said to myself that I'll check it out for 30-40 minutes and then go to sleep, but 11.30 came and I said I'd play for 1 more hour and then go to sleep, and then 4 AM came and I looked at the clock and went like "fuck!" into my chin and kept playing, sleep deprived, for 2 more hours until I looked at the clock again and saw that it was 6-ish AM and said to myself "ok, I finish building the moonpool and stock up on cured peepers and then go to sleep" and then 8,30 AM came and I had to call in sick from work so I could finally get some sleep (which I finally did), but then woke up 4-5 hours later and resumed playing until late in the evening, totally ignoring showering, taking out the trash, or any domestic duties at all until I finally beat the game 2 days later? Is this the type of "no idea how long you're playing" playing that you are talking about? :)

      Considering how diverse the biomes in the game are, it's truly amazing that the game's size is under 20 GB. Compare that to Ark: Survival Evolved, it's such a relief.

I've heard complaints that the combat is unsatisfying, but it fits the whole game for combat to be so unsatisfying that you don't seek it out.

    I have BAD Thalassophobia (fear of the ocean) and that’s what makes this game so damn crazy for me. I have been playing it for 15 hours so far and have only gone about 250m deep because I’m too scared to go further. It’s the first survival game where you feel *very* low on the food chain!

      I don’t even have thalassophobia as far as I know but the pure open ocean can be absolutely terrifying. Just today I was playing on a newer world, exploring in my sea moth. I was in the Dunes and I saw some blood kelp in the distance. I move in that general direction and there’s a massive drop off underneath me. I’m following it down thinking “jeez the blood kelp zone is awful deep here” when I get the PDA message “Warning. Entering ecological deadzone. Adding report to databank.”
      I cannot describe the visceral panic and anxiety that jumped out at me the second I heard that. Subnautica is TERRIFYING.
      Anywhere in the open ocean, whether it be the dunes, mountains, floating islands or even just the crag fields or grand reef can be seriously nerve-wracking. I’ve beat the game at least thrice already and it still scares the living daylight out of me.
      Anyway, rant over. It’s been three years, did you ever beat the game?

    I didn't actually find it that scary. But I love the creepy vibe, the looming sense of dread... It perfectly captures the feeling of being completely alone on a hostile world, and running out of time. The scariest moments are when I'm exploring a cave and forget which direction my vehicle is in, and I'm scrambling desperately trying to find it before running out of time. So it captures the danger of cave diving well.
    Good point about how they don't reward you for killing things. (Except edible fish.) I killed the reaper outside the Aurora for the first time, and was shocked that I didn't even get an achievement, not even a sarcastic one. And then I felt bad for killing that noble beast. :D

    • @finesseandstyle
      @finesseandstyle 3 года назад +1

      This.
      Game isn't that scary when you realize how much you can get away with if you play smart and plan well. The only few times I died was because I drowned, I was stuck in a wreck, my flashlight died and didn't have spare batteries.
      I'd play this game in VR in a heartbeat

    • @a8lg6p
      @a8lg6p 3 года назад

      @@finesseandstyle It's great in VR... Even though it's what I'd call a VR port as distinct from a proper VR game...
      There's a mod that fixes some problems, but... You basically have to play it with a keyboard and mouse. Or controller, which is slightly clunkier, but not bad. With Virtual Desktop, you can make your Oculus controllers emulate a gamepad, so then it's just like a gamepad that's broken in half. Which I've come to prefer, even though it's less than perfect.
      So there's no physical interactivity, is what I'm saying. You can't just grab stuff with your hands like in Alyx. The controls are like a normal game except your head is the mouse. Which makes the tablet/inventory etc a bit of a pain.
      But actually being in the reef or the cockpit of a submarine is about as cool as you might imagine.
      You have to have your VR legs though, or it will make you super-sick. All the zooming around and bobbing up and down... I couldn't take for ten minutes at first, but after a few weeks of other VR stuff, it doesn't bother me anymore.
      But if you're interested, I'd definitely recommend a Quest 2. If you want to stick it to Zuckerberg and have money to burn, by all means, get a Vive, but if 1K is a bit much to try it out... For $300...
      VR has barely begun to scratch the surface of its potential, but it's here, now, available to the mass market for the price of a standard gaming console, and it's pretty damn cool.
      Way more immersive than a flat box in front of your face, and way better for your health than sitting hunched over in a chair for hours and end. And you can play Steam VR games with it... With Virtual Desktop you don't even a cord, as long as you have decent router.

My first reaper encounter was me noticing a chest on the ocean floor near the Aurora, and hearing something behind me while opening it. I turned around just in time to see it inches from my face as it let out an otherworldly roar and proceeded to charge into me for 80% of my health. Somehow I managed to escape by hugging the wall and swimming down and away into the kelp reefs, but that was 100% the most terrifying game experience I have ever had. Subnautica is such a good game, I love how it starts in the safest area but forces you to go deeper and deeper into more dangerous areas, but still telling you where not to go, with the ghost leviathans of the void, or at first where the Aurora is leaking radiation, needing you to explore to make the radiation suit.
    I don't like to self promote, but I have been working on a pretty decent project for about a year (just building a massive tower), which is something else I love about the game, you dont just have to go deeper. Sometimes theres something fun in the mundane. I have been recording my tower, currently at 6km and posting them onto my channel.
    There is so much to explore, if you want to explore it all you need to build, upgrade, and be very cautious.

    Subnatica is a huge refresher in terms of survival games, it takes place in a environment most survival games make tedious and annoying, water. Plus, the game limits you in the right ways, no weapons: which make creatures more scary and dangerous without having to give them magic or some other powers.
    No map: makes you have to use land marks and beacons instead of just pressing a button and getting a map of the entire game.

    I've been playing video games since the 80's (so I've played a LOT of games) and subnautica is by far my favourite of all time. (I've played it through about half a dozen times) even when you know the story and what you are supposed to be doing it is just so enjoyable to play
    it is a masterpiece.
    tbh I didn't find it all that scary (but video games in general don't scare me at all, I never forget I'm just playing a game, sure I still get jump scared but the terror of the deep just wasn't there for me, I was more intrigued than scared)
    for me the scariest thing in subnautica is "oxygen" running out of oxygen is scarier than any monster in the game because that's something I can actually relate to the real world.
    drowning would suck
    for some reason tho I'm not really feeling below zero. there's just something about it that makes it less intriguing than the 1st game. (too much time spent on land I think) and the story is a bit meh.
