  • parazettel.com... - follow this link for a free email course about how I use the folder notes plugin alongside a number of others to fuse Tiago Forte's PARA Method and Niklas Luhmann's Zettelkasten in a useful knowledge management system.
    This video is all about one of the most underrated plugins in Obsidian. Search 'Folder notes' in the community plugin store in the app and you'll find it. Here I go over how I use it in context in my own vault as well as walking you through the settings and how they make a difference to the way the plugin works.

    I didn't really get how you allocate your note to a specific folder. It sounded like your said you make all your titles the same to pull them in but that can't be right? Can it be done by adding tags, i.e the tag #electronics Will pull into the electronics folder?

      I use Folder notes to create a new note in the folder in question, with the name of the folder as the title of the folder note. Then in the folder note, I create the dataview table that has the following line
      WHERE contains(file.folder, this.file.folder)
      Which brings in the notes from the current folder. You can use tags in this as well but separately, by adding the line...
      FROM #categories/books
      ...for example. By using just one of these you either get all the notes of different tags in the same folder, or all the notes in the vault with a certain tag.
      By using both of these, as I do in some cases, you get all the notes in a certain folder under a certain tag. You can filter the notes in the way you want like this.
      Hope this helps! If you want more, shoot me an email at theo@fundamentalised.com and I can answer in more depth.

    Hi Theo, your Obsidian inbox, is it just a folder labelled 'inbox' where you store notes that have not allocated to folders yet?

    • @fundamentalised

      That’s right - I’ve got a shortcut that quickly adds a note in there with the current date+time as the title. Then I just dump what’s on my mind and come back to it when I’m in the right headspace to organise it

      @ Thanks. I’ve also added Folder Notes and Dataview to show sub-folders, yet to show files in the folder.

    im suprised this isnt seen as a core setting

      Yeah it's been so pivotal in my own workspace. But each to their own I guess - perhaps it wasn't that high on the team's priorities

      Because it goes against the entire philosophy of Obsidian. The developers aim to encourage users to gradually move away from folder-based organization.

      @@pubdigitalix I see where you're coming from, linking ideas is great and encourages you to actually go out and develop what you're thinking and coming up with

    Look like you made MOC as folder

    • @fundamentalised
      @fundamentalised  Месяц назад

      Pretty much, I like to call it an index but it essentially maps out the content of the current folder same as a MoC would do

      @@fundamentalised it still good idea, because year later you can forgot why you use that folders systems etc. Also it can be helpful with AI organization, so AI can understand what go in what folder.
      But still i prefer use folders if all other way didn't work. For example if i want to make part of my oblidian publick then it only work with folders, but in other way i use links.
      Same as properties better that tags.
      But what i like the most - this plugin doesn't ruin anything else. But can't make.md do something similar?

    • @fundamentalised
      @fundamentalised  Месяц назад

      I've not extensively tried Make.md, but I'm aware of it and have given it a short go in the past. For me it seemed a little invasive with lots of new features, whereas this plugin just did the one thing really well, which was what I wanted

      @parazettel agree, it hard to understand this program, like templater, datawiew, excalidraw, metadata menu or canvas - you REALLY need it to start using it, because it not beginner-friendly, i alfo prefer simplier plugind, they didn't scare me as much.
