I have not had any noise from the power supply. Laptop works great with the QDX. And I think when you compare this with ANY other laptop, you can power it directly with 12V.
It has its winning points... and its losing points. Totally awesome for what it is!
Gauge pins are the way to measure those inside dimensions Steve. A ham with calipers in his desk is on the right track in this world. Looking forward to seeing all the videos you released this AM. Is it the Pi killer, time will tell.

It's interesting that yours didn't come with the modem and header installed. The one I got last week did, and I immediately ripped it out and replaced it with a 512G SSD. I'm actually really impressed by this little thing. I scrapped Windows, installed Mint, spent about two hours getting all the ham radio tools installed.. flrig and fldigi are humming along, GridTracker is doing its thing for WSJT-X, Winlink is running.. I even have Vara running on Wine. It's not a bad little laptop, and for $75.. I may buy a couple more of them before Evolve figures out what they've done and jacks the prices up.

My Evolve arrived 9/20/23. Two things noted: The power supply is now USB PD/ USB-C. The supply itself shows that it does have the multiple voltages that PD uses including 12VDC. You can buy a simple 5.5mm slim female to USB-C converter. . .but it isn't clear to me that you can feed it 12-13 volts to the Evolve and have it work. I'd really like to run 12 volts to the Evolve but I'm chicken to try it this way. The other thing is that my model didn't have the FTDI driver. . .no biggie, the one supplied by FTDI for Windows 10 works fine.
Put one of these inline to be sure: amzn.to/3sVUw0k but it should be written on the label on the laptop and the laptop's USBC will "ask" for the voltage from the USBC power supply and if there isn't a match: no power. It's part of the programming for safety. I do it all the time with my laptops.

Nice Job Steve. Would be a great buy if it had 4G, but as it is, will work fine for field use with a hotspot.
My guess is that having the 4g card just means one more bill... I'm ok with using the mobile-hotspot from my phone.

I just looked in an old Radio Shack catalog and they have a 3.4 x 1.3 coaxial connector listed, but online is only showing what you mentioned. Think I heard some of the others in the YT group not giving it a good review. Have you put any time on it yet? It might be good enough for my sister to use as she is mostly on Facebook using an Acer Chromebook. That Framework laptop Kyle showed has me interested when my reverse mortgage funds become available next April. You and the family stay safe. 73 WJ3U
"You get what you pay for" - if you're not a hard core user, its a fine laptop... probably last a year or so... I'm not expecting much out of a $60 laptop and it has delivered $60 worth of value. The latest Macbook Air (not their "best" model) is $1200
I would be curious if you can add a connector that is missing simply by soldering it in... Or does it lack the supporting electronics?
I've found the connector to add, just have to decide if its worth it. I'd need the drive also.

What about the audio driver after an update ? Since my last update in french. It's impossible to found it
I'm running linux and the last time I looked at this laptop, I had to re-apply the audio driver fix after every kernel update.
Looks like you got one of the earlier laptops. It should do linux with everything working. The later gen ones have the LTE card with header. They are also reported to have issues with sound card under linux. I have both. It will be interesting to see if you can add the SSD header.
Yeas there are different versions of this but I thought the earlier versions had the 4G. Whichever way, this little thing works well.
Mine doesn't have working sound, but neither does the Pi4, so still a good (better?) contender in this space
@@temporarilyoffline Okay, I just got mine today from Amazon because there isnt a MC in Utah. Mine has sound plus a modem and a sim card slot. What does this mean as far as installing linux or having issues?
Just curious, will this give enough volume out to get the G90 to transmit with power? I have an older think pad, and cannot get it to transmit with power, just 0.0w indicated. It has windows 10 as well. I am not a computer guy, not sure what is wrong.
Yes, you'll have to mess with the sound card volume to get it working. The new DE-19 Interface promises to make this easier and is on my workbench for a future video. Stay tuned.
Without the LTE port, can the original hard drive be accessed and upgraded still? Or is that tucked in too far for someone to get at? Bonus though I see from the comments that one can expand storage with the sd card.

Without the LTE card, they removed the connector, but not the header. I *believe* it's possible to solder the connector back, but I haven't tried it.

To anyone taking this apart the back (hinge side) screws are longer than the fronts. I put a dimple in the keyboard deck in the corner by accident. Just cosmetic but don’t be a dummy like me lol

By sheer dumb luck (not usually my forte) I got the version with the LTE. With a 256G drive swapped in I'm thinking dual boot Linux. Do you think this is viable?

Excelent information, i want to make more biger the internal memory, i open it but it was a little difrent because mine here in meico had a module Quectel-Mini PCIe EC25-AF, and i was thinking it was the har disk but i didnt find it, i am obsessed to find the hard disk please help me friend
I'm betting that Quectel-Mini is a cellular modem card? If you're game, try removing it and finding a suitable SSD to replace it - just have to make sure the sockets are the same. My evolve III didn't have the socket for more storage.

I just inserted a 64GB SD card in the slot and it mounted up just fine!
