  • In Microcenter, I found this laptop on sale for $79.99 (USD) So I bought it.
    It appears to be the cheapest new Windows laptop you can buy. So let's see how it performs!
    I will be doing a bunch of benchmarking, and gaming on this laptop to push it to it's limits!
    Is this laptop any good? Or is it not even worth looking at? Let's find out!
    Also, I failed to mention what this laptop is, this is what it is. The brand is Evolve III, and the model of this laptop is "Maestro-EBook11" But without the " " .
    Where to get the laptop- www.microcenter.com/product/6...
    The price is no longer $79.99, and is $99.99.

      For a second there I thought you were a viewer asking that question and I was going to say, something canny like, 'isn't that the whole point of the video?" lol
      As a point of clarification , the 5 hour battery life test was after you changed bios settings, where the wattage was set to 9 watts or whatnot? Also, for CS Go did you also turn off all the other graphic settings like anti-aliasing, smooth shading, etc.? Because I remember back in the day, like in 2012 when I had an even slower, old computer with a CRT monitor playing on 56k dial-up modem, I had to play, what was called back then, Half-life: Counterstrike, on 480 P resolution settings just to get 30 FPS where it looks super pixelated but compared to you running it at 800x600 (presumably) CS Go looks like it still has some DirectX or Smooth Shading going on. I guess not really that important since I wouldn't use it for gaming, but it really helps to know OBS was able to record fine.
      The only 2 questions I have remaining that haven't been answered in the 2 videos I watched was whether or not you had added the front camera to OBS while recording or if it was just gameplay since it sounds like Discord calls really demands a lot from the cpu. I'm basically looking for a replacement laptop after mine was stolen and just want something to stream on the go (where I'd bring my logitech usb webcams a USB hub, and probably an external drive).
      And secondly, how far back does the screen fold? Can it lay flat?
      Thanks for the in-depth testing you conducted and putting this all together. I greatly appreciate that you included a small bit about video editing too as that was a question I kinda hoped to have answered but wouldn't have expected. So kudos, and thanks again!

      @@aOnceChillpanda I am sorry for the very, very, VERY late reply. Somehow I did not see this message until now.
      So, the screen does not fold back far. It is far from being able to be flat.
      OBS does record, I do use it for my capture card, but at any higher than 1080P 30 FPS, it struggles.
      And I did not try recording a game, with the camera with OBS. I think it wouldn't be able to handle that.
      And I do think the battery life test was at 9 Watts, I don't remember though, as it's been a long time. And with CS:GO, I don't remember, but me being me, I likely put the game to the lowest settings possible.

    Bought 2 of them over the weekend. You can remove NVME LTE Cell modem and install and NVME SSD in the slot. It has be a m.2 2242 nvme b+m keyed ssd. They make drives that can fit it up to 2 TB. Crazy deal for a functional little web browser and media screamer machine. The HD graphics can decode and playback 4k video and Output via HDMI.

    • @digitaljon1109
      @digitaljon1109  2 года назад +1

      If I ever run out of storage I might actually put a nvme in mine. But for now I'm just using external hard drives when I use it.
      I don't actually use mine that much because it's quite small. I know I can hook it to a external monitor but I only use it at a different house when I am out. I don't have a monitor there. So I just use my old laptop that has a Pentium T4200. It's not as fast but it's working fine. I know I can use a mini HDMI to a HDMI adapter for a monitor but then I have to get a monitor a keyboard and all of that. Even though all I use the laptop for is to play Back RUclips well I edit videos. I guess I could do it with the small laptop too.
      How do you like the laptop?

  • @Kentageon

    Nice little video. I just picked up one of these to capture time lapses with, as I've been attempting to take some with a PC, but naturally if and when the power fails or skips, the lapse is lost. I think this little guy will be fit for the task.

    • @digitaljon1109
      @digitaljon1109  2 года назад

      Yeah, it should! I use a old Lenovo Thinkpad for my Minecraft Java server, so when the power goes out (which it does weekly here) everything is safe. The battery on it lasts about 5 hours with no one online. And it is hooked up to the ethernet, so when the power comes back on, the server will be back online, well, sort of.
      Team Viewer will be back online, so I can hop onto the laptop threw Team Viewer and restart the server, or anything if needed.
      This Evolve laptop should be able to do video recording, as long as it's 1080P. Not sure about 1440P though. Also, will you be using a external HDD/SSD to hold all of the time lapses? I ask this since time lapses take a lot of storage, and there is only 64 GB of it on the laptop, and around 25 GB with Windows 10 installed and everything.
      From some people in the comments, it might be possible to take the cell data card out, and put a M.2 SSD in it, or something. So that would be a good way to get a ton of storage.
      When I say "cell data card" I mean the place where you put a sim card in, to use cell data to connect to the internet, not the WIFI Card.
      Let me know how you like the laptop Kentageon! I am curious to here! Also- Thanks for the comment!

      @@digitaljon1109 I actually like the LTE capabilities of the laptop. I often work remotely and have a USB dongle for that reason. I can take the SIM card out of it and put it in this laptop and have internet on the go.
      And yeah, as for the time lapse, I intend to do one spanning an entire year. I have an external SSD with a USB connector attached. It will be where the images are stored.

      @digitaljon1109  2 года назад

      I like the LTE as well, it's quite neat. At the moment I only have 1 Sim Card though, which is on my phone. So I don't use it much (if ever).
      Maybe if I ever get another Sim Card, I might be able to get one of these LTE things for USB or something, and plug it into my main computer, and cancel the internet.
      Wait... Now that I think of it, that wouldn't work as I would still need ethernet for the server, and some of the older computers in my collection.
      How much have you recorded with the laptop so far? And what is the time lapse for? 1 Year is a LONG time! :O

      That sounds very exciting! Can I see how it looks when your done setting it all up? That must look pretty interesting. Also after the entire recording can you let me know what the battery life is? The reason why I ask is because if I'm not mistaking having something fully charged and just left plugged in degrades the battery after time. I'm curious to see if that's correct or not. So having it constantly plugged in for a year would be interesting.

    If we could get stuff like this in the UK I'd totally be getting a few for my family. They don't need anything too fancy and this seems to be a perfect fit. I'm sure the time will come eventually.

    • @digitaljon1109
      @digitaljon1109  2 года назад +3

      Hey there Lllog!! So, what you need to do is press "DEL" (a lot) when turning on the computer to get into the BIOS. Next go to the "advanced" tab.
      Then go to "CPU Configuration".
      Then go to "CPU Power Management".
      Then where it says "Power Limit 1 Power", you can adjust how many WATTS to give it there. Stock it should be 6. I adjusted the cooling on mine, so I set it to 25.
      To completely remove the limit, you can go to "Power Limit 1 Enable", and turn that to "Disabled".
      Then for the thermal limits, hit the "ESC" button 2 times to get back to the main page in the "Advanced" tab.
      Then go to the "Thermal" tab.
      In the "Thermal" tab, I disabled everything, and then where it showed numbers, I adjusted them to "0". As that turns them off.
      The only thing I left on in this tab is "DPTF", and "DPTF Processor".
      Once you do all that, then what you need to do is hit "ESC" once, and go to the "Save & Exit" tab, then select "Save Changes and Exit", and press enter.
      From there you are going to be booting into Windows.
      Here is some other notes. I highly recommend getting HWMonitor if you do not have it already, to monitor the temperatures. As it does get really hot. If you need to adjust the WATTAGE higher or lower, you can tell in there.
      Also, extra note, try to keep the CPU temperature from 100C or less. 100C is very hot, but it shouldn't break anything short term. I try to keep it under 95C. (Still very hot) but I want the extra speed. I am going to try to adjust the cooling on my laptop even more though, soon.
      Also, how much was your laptop? I saw they went on sale for about $50 (USD) recently at Micro Center.
      How is your day by the way?
      Also, thanks for the comment mate! I enjoy reading and responding to them!

      So, you can't replace/upgrade the RAM. They are soldered on.
      But I have heard you can upgrade the storage, with a M.2 SSD by taking out the thing you can put a SIM card in to get internet on the go.
      I am not too sure if it is possible, I have not tried it as I don't have a M.2 SSD.

    Thanks for your review. I bought my Maesto E-Book 15 days ago as an open box (torn flap) product for $63.99 (20% off). It came with activated Win10 Pro Educ ; it did NOT come with 802.11ac WiFi as stated in the scecs (the RTL8723DU chip only does single band 802.11b/g/n WiFi). I added an inexpensive $8 802.11ac dongle for faster networking. Then I made these adjustments:
    Screen-adjusted the settings to eliminate the washed out look
    Sound-tuned the output using Spatial Sound and the equalizer; no bass but sounds decent
    Power-adjusted to performance in advanced power settings
    I use it for video under RUclips, Tubi-TV, Pluto and Kodi and it does 1080p no problem. As far as gaming RetroArch works great thru about SNES, Megadrive and PCEngine emulators. The 5500mAh battery lasts me 8-11 hrs under normal use and charges quickly with the fast charge adapter. IMHO the trackpad is about the best I've used. The keyboard is usable if a little small.
    Nice tip on BIOS voltage setting. Apparently you can yank the LTE modem and replace it with a NGFF SSD card for added storage. But this notebook computer IS a Dodge Dart NOT a Dodge Charger; keep that in mind & for the price I think its a bargain. daveyb

      Thanks! I do like taking a look into the BIOS of computers to see what I can play with in there.
      The downside of me always going into the BIOS is, I know enough to be dangerous. So I nearly fried some computers in the past from that lol.
      Have you tried any modern games on the laptop? Like Cyberpunk, Dying Light 2, ECT?
      I do plan to make another video on this laptop in the future, testing out 1 game per video or so. I want to test GTA V, and Fortnite. I am not sure what other games quite yet, though. Maybe Dota 2.
      Also, there might be a way to get more bass in the speakers. I am not sure though, but there might be a way to get a program and turn the BASS way up in it, any maybe it might sound a bit better? (I have never messed with speakers like that before).

      Also, I want to do a "upgrade" to mine. What I want to do is make a custom bottom of the laptop. Meaning I want to take the bottom off, make a wooden bottom, then fill it up with vents. So the CPU can be maxed out, and not power limited to 9 WATTS due to it is running at 100C+ if it goes any higher in the WATTS.
      With a vent on the bottom, I would be able to use one of those fans that you set a laptop on, to cool it down easier. Since wind would be blowing on the coper heat sync.

    I bought a bunch of these laptops a while back for $70 each. First thing I did was run a CPU-Z benchmark and I think it got about 250, after disabling the power limit I got a bench score of 500, Monitoring the temps while doing a stress test for about 15 minutes it settled at about 70 degrees. The CPU power draw went from 6 watts to 10.5. I couldn't get it any hotter and was pleasantly surprised. I didn't try any other benchmark, maybe that was my issue. OR now that I think about it.. Maybe it was throttling at that temp, I'm going to raise it and try again.
    Anyways, I bought the other ones to give to kids and kept one of them to stream my gaming desktop to it. That way I use it for near full frame rate gaming while traveling when I have a good internet connection, I just spent a week in a hotel with it that had great internet and played a lot of BeamNG with no issues, or when I want to sit in my living room or bed to play games that require full desktop power on a $70 laptop. Totally worth it!
    Edit: Upped the thermal limits to 95 and I hit a max of 85 during a bench test, also hit a score of 600, so it's a bit faster now. I'm still not seeing any crazy hot temps but I'll mess with it a bit more.

    • @digitaljon1109
      @digitaljon1109  2 года назад +1

      Hey Fc3sbob! Thanks for the comment! Always enjoy reading them.
      Try to disable the temperature limit and see what happens, if you can. But 85C is quite nice! Mine gets really hot.
      I do have 2 of these, so I will try Cinebench R23 on the other one and see what happens.
      Also, I might as well re-do the thermal paste on mine, since it is a few years old it seems, from looking at when the parts where made. It should be really easy, I dug in before and it is a quite simple laptop on the inside. Just a few screws to take the bottom off.
      How did you turn your desktop into that kind of server to stream games? That sounds quite nice!
      That's quite nice by the way! Hopefully the kids have fun with them! If it is there 1st laptop, it wouldn't be bad at all. It can play lighter games like Minecraft Bedrock & Roblox, decently well. Definitely not meant for Cyberpunk, but for $70, you can't ask for more lol.
      This is a lot better than the old laptop I used to use. It had a 2 core Celeron in it. I used to play Minecraft Java (on default settings, due to I didn't know how to change them at that time), and the game was getting between 0 to 20 FPS. Not great. This would have been a dream laptop for me, 5 years ago.
      Granted, this is my fastest laptop now, that isn't being used as a Minecraft server.

    • @fc3sbob
      @fc3sbob 2 года назад +1

      @@digitaljon1109 hey, so there's a few ways to stream games, you can just install steam on it and login with your account and with your desktop running steam you can just start the game from the list and it will stream over. You may have to enable remote play in the steam settings.
      But the best way I have found is to run remote desktop sharing with Parsec, install it on both computers and you'll be able to connect and play games or watch youtube ect as if you were at your computer with a very nice frame rate as long as you are on a decent connection and have a good ISP with a decent upload speed at home. I have 30mbps upload and it works great!
      yeah check the thermal paste, I did open up mine to see what's inside and upgradeable which isn't much but I might see if I can replace the cellular card with a SSD of some kind.
      I will play around with it and run more tests later! I am very surprised with these laptops, I might even get more next time I pass by a microcenter.

    • @digitaljon1109

      And the RAM does too. The CPU needs to be 1.8 GHz 4 core, and this laptop has a 1.8 GHz 4 core.
      It also requires 4GB ram, which this has just 4GB. So it should work, but not the best.

      If it is just Google docs or something, sure. But if it is more than that, I recommend getting a external HDD to go along with it, as you will likely need more storage.
      Also I recommend getting a external keyboard as well, due to having one is very nice with this laptop, as the keyboard sucks.

      @@digitaljon1109 In your opinion, what do you recommend a computer for college and education?

    • @digitaljon1109
      @digitaljon1109  2 года назад

      @@fatmaaalbhabsa910 I am not too sure to be fair. I never been to collage, nor do I have any experience of doing education on a computer.
      I think this will work, unless you are taking graphic design classes, or video editing classes. This has good battery life, for my use, on battery saving mode, it will probably last 7-8 hours.
      You can also put a M.2 SSD in this, if you take out the SIM card slot. You can also put SD cards in it, and you can also just put a external HDD on as well. You can get a 1 TB external HDD for about $40 on Amazon.
      But then there is the whole, the keyboard sucks, so if you are typing a lot, like this message or more, you really should get a cheap keyboard, as that will make typing so much better. And with that, a cheap mouse, like a $7 Lenovo mouse off of Amazon. They are good mice.
      But, if you want to do any gaming, you would want something a bit better, at least with Iris XE graphics, GTX 1650 or better.
      I am not sure what your budget is. But at least if you want something that can play some games, you would be looking in the $450 range.
      And if you wanted a laptop that has a RTX GPU, with DLSS support, so it is able to play future games, or even current games better, you would be looking in the $600 (USD) range, on Amazon. For a RTX 3050 laptop.
      If your maximum budget is ~$120, then I would say, get this laptop (the Evolve) I showed in this video for $60 from Micro Center.
      Then get the Toshiba Canvio Ready 1 TB external HDD from Micro Center for $40.
      Then for a decent cheap keyboard, I would get the Inland IK-210 Premium Keyboard, which is $5 at Micro Center, it is nice.
      Or you could get the Inland iK100 keyboard, which is $4, it is nice, but the print screen button on a normal keyboard is instead the sleep button on this keyboard, so when I go to take a screenshot, I put the computer to sleep. (I took the sleep keys off to "fix" the problem.) Lol.
      The $5 keyboard doesn't have a sleep button though, if you wanted one.
      Then I would get a mouse, and this one is interesting.
      So Inland has a mouse for $5, it is nothing special, it works. But it is not that good for gaming.
      What I would recommend doing is going onto Amazon and picking up a Lenovo mouse, it doesn't have a bunch of extra fancy buttons, just left, right, and middle click. And this mouse is $8. I been using it as my main mouse for about 3 years now. It has not broken yet.
      The total for all that is about $113, and it would be somewhat similar to a desktop, with a mouse, keyboard, 1 TB of storage, and a laptop.
      But wait, I forgot something. We have 2 USB ports, and 3 USB items. Let me find a USB adaptor.
      So, a cheap USB HUB that should work is from Micro Center, it is a Inland 4 port USB 3.1 HUB for $9.60.
      This will add 4 USB ports to the laptop.
      (Also, the HDD might not work right in the USB hub, so just plug the HDD right into the USB 3.0 port on the laptop, which is the blue port) then plug the USB hub into the USB 2.0 port, and plug your mouse and keyboard into it. (And also plug the USB WIFI in, if you need it).
      The total now is around $123.
      I do find it is a bit odd on WIFI, but it does work for the most part. Sometimes it disconnects, then reconnects right away.
      You can get a USB WIFI dongle that would likely fix that.
      Sorry for the wall of text, I spent way too long typing this.

    Seriously dude! you are putting this device through the ropes but read the box it's an education notebook for kids. Most likely an over stock the CPU and 4G LTE module is probably worth over $90 and the Microsoft PRO software is another $30 plus all other components. Celeron chipset isn't a gaming CPU so why would you game on a 11.6" notebook. This looks to be a basic surf the web, zoom type device. Review doing homework on it....lol.

    • @digitaljon1109
      @digitaljon1109  2 года назад +1

      The reason why is it wouldn't be as interesting just going into a text document or watching some RUclips videos.
      I did do web browsing too on it. Also I actually didn't read the box 🤣.
      But I figure we already know it can do the easy stuff. But what about gaming? And to be fair I am actually very impressed in this laptop. It is actually the fastest laptop I own. The second-fastest is a AMD m300 CPU which is quite a bit slower. About half the speed.
      But doing homework type stuff I don't normally do online anywhere but it would do it just fine.
      If I do get more games in the future like Dying Light 2 I will try them on this laptop to just because why not.
      Even though it has a Celeron it actually in some games isn't the problem instead it runs out of ram. But the Celeron probably couldn't do much more anyway.
