  • Intermittent Fasting vs. Prolonged Fasting: Benefits of 1-3 Day Fasts- Thomas DeLauer… Learn some of my Fasting Protocols with me 1:1 www.ThomasDeLauer.com
Prolonged fasting (PF) is that which lasts from 48 hours to 120 hours-
    Studies have found that fasting:
    Reduces oxidative damage and inflammation
    Promotes optimal energy metabolism
    Protects cells
    In humans benefits include:
    Weight loss
    Arthritis benefits
    Asthma improvement
    Helps with hypertension
Prolonged fasting has been demonstrated to:
Increase cellular resistance to toxins in both human and mice studies
    Reduces circulating insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1)
Protect cells from chemotoxicity (for example those who undergo chemotherapy)
Differences between PF and fasting of less than 24 hours are likely due to the complete exhaustion of glycogen. Our liver stores most of our body’s glucose in the form of glycogen.
Following 12 o 24 hours of fasting (varies by person and factors such as physical fitness), liver (hepatic) glycogen stores are depleted and the body turns to the following for energy:
    Nonhepatic glycogen stores
    Free fatty acids
    Ketone bodies
Humans can survive 30 or more days fasting. This way of producing energy may slow cellular aging in mammals. It is natural for humans to have high energy when hungry and lower energy when satiated - likely because we would have needed our brains functioning well to come up with new sources of food.
Hunger creates a cascade of bodily processes that may explain the benefits of fasting. When we are hungry, certain hormones are released and neuronal networks activated. The hunger response leads to increased activity in the neuronal networks related to cognition.
    This leads to:
Production of BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor)
    Synaptic plasticity improvement
    Stress tolerance increase
Cardiovascular benefits are likely due to the increased levels of adiponectin during fasting
Adiponectin is released from fat cells. Obese individuals have less circulating adiponectin than normal weight individuals. Too little adiponectin is tied to many chronic diseases, including type-2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, cancer and heart disease. Adiponectin in an anti-inflammatory agent and protects against chronic disease. Hypertension has been helped in a human study with 13 days of water only fasting, and the benefits even remained when blood pressure was tested following 6 days of normal eating. Fasting for 3 or more days leads to changes in insulin, IGF-1, IGFBP-1 and glucose:
30% or greater decrease in plasma insulin and glucose levels
Decrease in IGF-1, the major growth factor in humans
High IGF-1 and insulin levels are tied to aging and cancer
Increase in IGFBP-1 (a protein that inhibits IGF-1)
Longer fasting periods have shown impressive results for those with rheumatoid arthritis
Best results are with a fasting periods of 1-3 weeks followed by a vegetarian diet.
    Immune system benefit:
Fasting for 3 days or longer leads to a reset of the immune system
Fasting lowers white blood cell counts, leading to new white blood cells being created by the immune system
A study took cancer patients who were undergoing chemotherapy and had them fast for 1, 2 or 3 days prior to chemotherapy.
Those who fasted for 3 days, but not those who fasted for 1 day, experienced fewer harmful side effects, such as immunosuppression .Many positive effects have been found for both prolonged fasting as well as intermittent fasting, so incorporating either into your routine will likely be beneficial.
*It is very important to speak with your doctor before going on a fast lasting 3 or more days. Longer fasts may not be advised for those who are underweight, young or old.

A little bit the first 3 days till ketosis kicks in properly. But you will gain the muscle back fast when you go back to your "gym". You can not lift weights or do HIIT during long fasting. (7+ days) The real benefits come from 7+ days of fasting.

If HGH goes up so will IGF1, does it matter if HGH+IGF1 is created 'naturally' via fasting/exercise compared to eating dairy/red meat/soy isolate protein etc, do you see my point?
If one has a pre-cancerous condition and one wants to avoid upping growth hormones, its simple - avoid eating foods that increase it, but I wonder would fasting/exercise cause the same kind of risk seeing as HGH+IGF1 are increased when fasting and exercising, thankyou.

I did a 7 day fast years ago and I can attest by day 5....your energy is through the roof! It's crazy! I felt led by God to fast that year before the IF craze.....and I ran a milk route, which is very brutal work, but I never felt better in my life. Fasting is a gift from God if you give it a chance! Even Jesus fasted 40 days so if it's good enough for Him....it should be good enough for us.

wait what ? ever heard about autophagy ? While not eating, your body will use what he cans. Fat as fuel, muscle as amino acids. that's what happens everyday to everyone, but then you eat, build some new muscle fiber etc etc so you don't really lose anything. The real problem is : Heart is a muscle.
Serious studies, not talking about pro-fasting studies, nor cons-fasting studies, will let you know that most of the deaths since 2010 while fasting are due to heart weaknesses. And yes, every years, some people die while doing a prolonged fasting. Another side effect you won't read in pro-fasting studies. (im talking here about 20 days + fastings).
Im not against nutrition gurus, but people should be able to know that for every benefits, there are side effects. always.

I did a fast a couple weeks ago for the first time, 7 days total, dropped about 14 lbs. I'm on day 4 of another fast right now, it's actually pretty easy. The biggest thing I've learned is that eating before never really had anything to do with hunger or needing energy (at least not for me at 250 lbs, BMI 36), my body had all the fuel it needed stored in my fat gut. Eating was just something to do and was pleasurable and satisfying, like any other activity you do for fun. It's changed my notion of my own capabilities and will-power.

I've been intermittent fasting for years but I did my first 72 hour strictly water only fast in August 2018. I just did a 48 hour strictly water only fast 2 days ago (October 15, 2018). I love it! I save time, money and don't have to think about food which allows me to focus on life. Plus I have more energy. Fasting is a massive life hack that more and more open minded and optimum health seeking people are discovering. Thanks for all of your videos Thomas!

What helped me was go to a 5 star hotel and have a massive breakfast buffet as my last meal before a 10 day fast, the quality of food is really good and it doesnt cost that much, the buffet has a variety of foods - you got fats carbs juices proteins there is everything to set you up for your fast. I wasn't hungry and didn't experience the usual headaches I got from fasting before. Then when I got headaches after 48 hours I started taking coffee and mixing 1/2 a teaspoon of salt per litre of water.

I started breakfast to dinner, then 24 hours, then 48 and finally 72 hours. The benefits were amazing, long term I started eating less overall. This works. MY story. I went to bed Sunday night after eating a pizza, big bag of chips, 6 pack of beer and a couple cocktails. Woke up Monday at 7. Fell back asleep. Got back up at 11 and had to cancel work. Felt so horrible I decided to stop everything and go on a fast. I had done one 10 years ago for 3 days and knew I'd feel great after a couple days. I stayed on for 128 hours till Saturday morning. I went from 155lbs to 144.2lbs. I did moderate exercise for an hour as much as my body would handle. TRUTH- this time I felt out of it till Friday. It's now saturday morning as I type and I'm drinking coffee and going to eat in about an hour. I feel like a new man...Fasting works- even if you dont do it right- it's the hardest "easy" thing you'll ever do.

@@lisajay4394 that’s so true. After 72 hours of fasting I would eat whatever I normally would not really feel comfortable to eat. I have found this powerful way to enjoy food more on the day I don’t fast.
I am just over 48 hours at this moment I’m writing this comment. Plan to go to 72 hours and might be even more if I can. It will be my first 96 hours.
      Wish me good luck :)

I get what you’re saying as I’ve been experimenting w/ 3-5 day fasts recently and am 100% committed to a 3 day fast every month from now until I expire. Major, major profound life breakthrough, awakening, straight I see the light type of transformation. I didn’t care about the weight loss, I needed a gut reset, I had no clue I’d get a spiritual revival and I finally kicked my excess sugar habit! Preciate you my dude!

I learned to be able to tell when I'm in a ketogenic state without testing my ketones. There's a hint of euphoria that's associated with such an increase in ketone concentration. It goes away because I get used to it, but it's rather motivating for me to get to that point. It's wonderful. When I tested my one-rep-max before and just before re-feeding after 5 days, it didn't change all that much. In fact my strength to weight ratio increased dramatically.

Thank you for your videos. I'm learning so much. I'm on my third set of fasting for three days. I wasn't for sure I could handle the headaches. I drank water and one 6 oz cup of coffee in the morning. Switch to green tea. Stuck with no calorie, no carb. I was sick with a bronchitis type flu so I wanted to keep the warm drinks and liquids coming in. I had a headache off and on. Lost 6 lbs. Ate keto type meals in a small window. The second set of three I did the same but added apple cider vinegar with some liquid magnesium. I was getting muscle spasms. Got through the third day. Dropped 7 lbs. Came off and ate egg souffe or keto quiche. Added one piece of bacon. OH BIG mistake. Not so much the soft eggs but the one piece of bacon. Had a large salad with avocado and lots of good stuff. My stomach suffered most of the night. So....this morning I started another three day. I just couldn't do the black coffee. Sticking with water and apple cider vinager. I'm assuming that the body will still get the same benifits fasting 3 days with acv and non calories, non carbs as just plain water. (?) I saw your video on coming off a three day fast with the bone broth frothy drink. Looks good and thanks for sharing the recipe. I had no idea that cream of tarter has benefits of potassium. You have been a great encouragement to me. Blessings

I am thankful to have lost 140 lbs since May 2021 using keto/IF/and PF (5-7 days ). The benefits of health and feeling of well-being are fantastic. 45 lbs to go! I have tried other strategies (variations of plain old calorie restriction) in the past, and found those strategies to be a tightrope I just couldn't stay on long-term. I gained all the weight back each time once life stresses got bad and I inevitably crashed and burned. But with this plan, life stresses that have occurred or been present during this time (grief over loss of child, illnesses in family, etc.) have not knocked me off that path, but in fact have kept me more firmly on it.

Not sure how long I will go, maybe 21 up to 40. I feel fine, moderately exercising, walking and some weights. I've been watching Alan Goldhamer from truenorthhealthcenter and the Buchinger channel. I added lemon just yesterday. No coffee or tea. Just water. Herbert Shelton's work, (the modern father of water fasting) is carried on at the NHA site. Do your research and decide for yourself what your next steps are! God bless you.

Great Information. i intermittent fasted from the day after Thanksgiving, where I weighed 233 lbs. until this past Tuesday. I had 1 meal a day for that time period and my weight went down to 220 lbs. Then on Tuesday i did a prolong fast drinking only water and black coffee for approximately 36 hrs until Thursday evening where I had 1 very small meal. The energy and alertness was off the charts after 24 hrs. and I really was not hungry. On Thursday morning i weighed in @ 217 lbs. i'm 65 years old. 6ft tall with about 20 t0 30% body fat. My goal is 190 -200. What I wanted to know was how it affected me and why I was all of a sudden so alert and energized. Thomas just explained that beautifully in the 2 videos. I'll never eat again....just kidding. Gotta get rid of this spare tire.

It was surprising how many results I saw, I lost almost 20 pounds(I weigh about 270) , but I didn’t continue the fast and I regret that because I gained it back. If you’re interested in doing this I would definitely try it, but with the idea in mind that it will be a lifestyle thing.

I did an 18 day water fast a couple years ago on one of my holidays. Protip, don't do a water fast that lasts more than a few days in the winter. Oh my sweet mother of jesus... that was brutal.. particularly as it was below zero almost every day and I still had to go outside several times a day to walk my dog.
And my dog wasn't fasting, he had no problem running wild in the snow and cold and he needs his exercise every single painful freezing agonizing day.
So yeah, do water fasts in the spring or summer.

I'm currently on a 2 day (what what will end up 56 hr fast), at hour 35-36. I feel an increase in focus for sure. Just have been drinking plenty of water, haven't been working out more than a few chin-ups/press-ups, I think I drink about 1.2 imperial gallons/5 litres of water a day to make sure I'm hydrated as I won't get any liquids from any other source. I want to extend it to three days now! If you're thinking of starting this for the first time like I am, good luck, keep focused, don't give in to your cravings and you'll be a healthier, stronger willed person because of it.

I started fasting to see what would happen. 1 day per week. it went without crisis. 2 days no issue. couldn't make on a three day fast. I noticed I still have energy. I actually eat less afterwards and throughout the week. with this alone I have finally begun to loose weight and feel better overall. I'm also 52 so my metabolism has changed a lot so the time is right for me.

I started on my fasting journey about a year ago. Started with 24 hours. Went to 48 hours. Then 72 hours. Finally a 96 hour fast. I am a little bit older and was starting to get arthritis in my hips. The thing that surprised me the most was the way the inflammation just left my body!!! I felt 20 years younger. Other benefits: lost a few pounds, saved a bunch of money on food, kitchen stayed clean (no dishes to wash) and just felt better overall. I recommend fasting to everyone. It's not as hard as you think it is.

  • @urielmramirez
    @urielmramirez 7 лет назад +31

Finally! Thank you for talking about it. I did a 6 day fast and it was awesome. Lost about 5 lbs (after I ate). 2 days after I ate, I broke a bench PR. Still need to lose about 20 lbs so I'm experimenting with 2 days maintenance calories and fast on the third day while maintaining cardio. Day 2 or 3 are the hardest day, after that all the days feel the same, like you would intermittent fasting. The only downside of fasting is the temporary decrease of strength and getting lightheaded all the time.
Tip: Drink 2 gallons of water daily and hide food from sight. Keep yourself busy and don't workout too hard after day 2 because you will recover very very slowly.

Before I started IF, I figured out I had a 13 hour fasting window between dinner n' breakfast. Staying off the carbs, I did in stages, since it was such a huge shift. I soon found that no carbs means less hunger between meals. Now I fast 16-20 hours at least every other day. Plan to do a 24 later this week.
