Thank you for this wonderful zipper flap tutorial. I actually used the flap as a decorative statement making it the front of the pillow. I had a 16 x 24 pillow form. I divided it into 3rds. Short panel was cut 9 x 16 and the larger 16 x 16. I don't add extra fabric (seam allowances) to the pillow form dimension. I like it firm and filled in. I cut the back side at 16 x 24 and tapered the corners so it wouldn't have dog ears. Didn't do the binding just sewed it together with right sides. I use white on the small 1/3 and black on the 2/3, the a beautiful sky blue for the flap. It really came out nice. I love this zipper flap. I'll be using this method a lot in the future. Thanks!
Thank you for carefully explaining everything. This tutorial has given me courage to actually insert a zipper. Will order the Annie’s zipper and place in the pillow that I’m constructing now. Pat
@quiltinglife this was exactly what I was looking for! It solved 2 things, a dilemma I had, & one ididnt know I was gonna have until I watched ur video. I may still put batting on my pillow but I still like how u did urs very much. I also might try adding pipping to mine but don't know yet. & don't forget if u have time, to update ur video abt the 8.20 mark where u say "wrong side together" when attaching the other side of the zipper, you should have said, "attach the right sides together'
Fabulous zipper installation. I am curious, if I am choosing not to bind the pillow; would it still work, if I just sewed around the four outside edges and turned it right side out? Thank you for all you and Chelsea share with us! Truly a highlight to my day, when you are on.
I just watched this video and had the same question! I hate binding quilts so that is one thing that I don't want to do on a pillow. Did you try it? I don 't see that you received an answer from Sherri...
THANK YOU!! I have wanted to try this for a very long time but, just didn’t like the look of the zipper on back. Your way has fixed that for me. Your pillows look amazing I’m headed to your blog now for the information you said was there too. Again thank you! Beth B
This method was SO easy! Thank you so much. I made two lumbar pillows out of leftovers from cutting down day bed covers for my RV. I made my own pillow form inserts. Came out great!
This was brilliant! Just what I was looking for. Thank you so much! I made two diff shaped outdoor pillows and it was so fast! I followed you step by step and it was a breeze. I can’t thank you enough. I’m going to save this video as I know I will be making even more.
This was perfect for hiding the zipper with no struggle. Looks great and mixing the fabrics on the back make the pillow totally reversible. Great instructions in you usual calm manner. Thank you so much!
Thank you Sherri! You are the best teacher! I so appreciate your tutorials! You explain everything so well. I just love your binding tutorial! It has helped me so many times! Thank you so very much! You are always so sweet and such a kind person! ❤
I made four of these cushions today for an outdoor setting. Your instructions were brilliant.Thank you They will be much used in an Australian Garden this summer.
Just made this cushion cover, but without the binding, ie sewed cushion seams right sides together with zip open to turn. Got some gorgeous fabric off FB marketplace of Aussie bush flowers. Must say I'm thrilled with the result!! Awesome tutorial. Thanks, so much😊👏💖
Hi Sherri, thank you for that video, I was always a bit hesitant to try put a zip on a pillow, after watching your video a few times I managed to finish a pillow with zipper and flap and am very pleased with it, the first of many I think 😊
I'm getting ready to use this method! So excited because i was dreading this ... I did sew a piece of fabric to the back of the piece work. I thought I needed to protect it from fraying. Thanks so much!!
I've made dozens of pillows...most all of them with envelope backs because I had a FEAR of using a zipper. Your video was so well done...so simply taught that I can hardly wait to try your technique. I think I'll go out to my studio and make a pillow today from an orphan block with a ZIPPER BACK! Yay! I don't have any Annie's zippers but I will be ordering some and I hope you are a partner with them to reap some small benefit. Thank you so much!
I just want to say thanks so much for your tutorial. I made two pillows following your instructions and they came out awesome!. Thanks again for sharing your time and talent!!
I absolutely love this video!!! Can you please tell me if you have a video on how to apply the trim around the outer edge? I can't wait to go to the fabric store tomorrow. Thank You Thank You Thank You!!! I have this video saved in my bookmarks.
Great instructions but I have a question. Is it ok to cut both ends of the zipper? Shouldn’t I line up the slider end with the edge? Thanks for clarifying!
Thank you for explaining this so well. I’ve watched many videos trying to decide measurements and how to adjust for what I want. And I had an ahh hhaaaa moment watching yours. I’m going to be using leather hair on hide for my front and leather on the back. But your method is exactly what I wanted. I’m doing a couple different ones. One will have a flange. And one without. Thank you.
I have watched this videos many, many times and finally got up the nerve to install a zipper this way. BEST EVER. This is the only way to install a zipper as far as I am concerned. Thank you Jesus and thank you for your video!
wow, this looks a lot easier than I thought...my pillows look shabby after a few months because the open back seam get all wonky.....for now on the will look great thanks to you.
Wonderful tutorial!! The back looks as good as the front as far as I can see. I have 3 EuroShams to make for my King Size bedding Project and I want to make them reversable so this method is perfect!
We are making a pillow in a mini class I go to, (did go) and we need a zipper backing. Never have had to put in a zipper in anything and I'm glad I found you and your tutorial today April 1st. I will give this a try. I was going to leave it flat for now but now I can finish it. Thank You so much.
Your video is perfect! I just finished 4 throw pillows. I'm thinking of more projects that would apply this technique. I can't thank you enough for the thoughtful, clear and concise instructions! And, I love the zippers you recommended too!
I used this method for the first time and will absolutely use it again, but sewing the binding over the zipper was difficult and came out messier than I would like, even using a walking foot. Do you have any tips?
Thank You for making and sharing the excellent information on how to put a zipper in a pillow back, online, for everyone to use. It was so useful to me and I learned a lot. I made a pillow back like this for the fall wool appliqué pillow that I made. This procedure made my pillow look so nice and now I can change my pillow covers with the seasons, but use the same pillow form. I am so happy with my finished pillow and I just want to thank you for taking the time and effort to share your knowledge and skills with others. I do appreciate it very much. Your videos and quilting instructions are clear, well done and easy to understand. I will be making my pillows like this for now on. 🧵 Happy Sewing! 🧵
Thanks Sherry. I've done zippers in the back of pillows but always have put them on the top seam. I like your idea and will try the next time I make pillow covers.
This method is great! Very quick to make and they look great. I’ve used other methods, but this is my all time favorite. I bought the By Annie zippers by the yard.
This method is a different way than I am used to. I like it, I will try it. Your pillows are unique. Also never heard of an Annie zipper. Gotta look for that type of zipper now, I don't like the plain pillows, your have more style.
Thank you so much for sharing the measurements on the pillow and the zipper fabulous thank you to truly truly enjoy your tutorials I love all your ideas
Thanks for the great video :) I always do envelope back pillows but really wanted to learn how to put a zipper in the back for a Christmas gift I'm making. Thanks so much!
Great tutorial! I finished one as I watched. Actually used a 12 inch zipper, but just added pieces of fabric to match the flap. What was that zipper you mentioned?
I always like to place a 3 inch width of fine interfacing ( P44F fusable ) at the end of both piece of fabric where the zipper will be sewn if the fabric is a cotton that is not quilted . This gives stability where the zipper will be sewn . The number 5 zippers are wonderful but they can cause some waviness in a thinner fabric .
Now if you wanted piping instead of blinding could you sew piping on the front, turn pillow top over so the right sides are facing and then sew and turn. Let me know about doing this method.
At the 8:21 minute mark, when you say you're pinning the "wrong side of the pillow back bottom" to the zipper - I believe you meant to say "right side of the pillow back bottom." :-)
This was a great tutorial--all the other ones I found had steps that I just couldn't follow. Was wondering if I would need to do anything different to use an invisible zipper rather than an all purpose zip since I have so many invisible ones. Would love an answer to this:) Christie
This is my all-time favorite method of creating pillow covers. Great tutorial.
Thank you for this wonderful zipper flap tutorial.
I actually used the flap as a decorative statement making it the front of the pillow.

Thanks!

This zipper in a pillow back is awesome! Thanks. Attached my zipper in less than 20 minutes!
Great to hear! Thank you so much!

The best video I have ever seen on finishing a pillow. Just a beautiful professional finish.
I’m glad you clarified that the zipper on the first seam was face down. I didn’t get that at first. Thanks, Sherri, this is a very nice finish.
This is a wonderful video. I pull it up every time I put a zipper in my pillow back.
THANK YOU!! I have wanted to try this for a very long time but, just didn’t like the look of the zipper on back. Your way has fixed that for me. Your pillows look amazing I’m headed to your blog now for the information you said was there too. Again thank you! Beth B

I've used this video to make pillow backs so many times. I know use zippers by the yard, and that is another item you might demonstrate sometime.
Thank you Sherri! You are the best teacher! I so appreciate your tutorials! You explain everything so well. I just love your binding tutorial! It has helped me so many times! Thank you so very much! You are always so sweet and such a kind person! ❤
Thank you for sharing this tutorial. I like that I can use almost any color zipper since it is hidden.
I made four of these cushions today for an outdoor setting. Your instructions were brilliant.Thank you
They will be much used in an Australian Garden this summer.
Excellent demonstration and thank you for demystifying zipper insertion. I now feel confident to put my first zipper into a pillow
This was a great video and thanks for the PDF download. I will be putting pillows on my list to make in 2022. Best idea for orphan blocks.
Tried this technique today and worked out beautifully! Thanks you for detailed instructions!
Just made this cushion cover, but without the binding, ie sewed cushion seams right sides together with zip open to turn.
Got some gorgeous fabric off FB marketplace of Aussie bush flowers.
Must say I'm thrilled with the result!!
Awesome tutorial. Thanks, so much😊👏💖
Thank you for your comment! I was confused why the wrong sides were sew. together! LOL! Now I understand because the binding would cover the edge! :)
Hi Sherri, thank you for that video, I was always a bit hesitant to try put a zip on a pillow, after watching your video a few times I managed to finish a pillow with zipper and flap and am very pleased with it, the first of many I think 😊

❤you made that look so doable, I usually stay away from zippers. I will give this one a try, thank you

Thank you! I’ve made a ton of pillows with lapped zippers, but this worked well and is so pretty!
Hi. I looked at so many RUclipsrs and your tutorial is the best by a country mile. Thank you so much.
Great instructions but I have a question. Is it ok to cut both ends of the zipper? Shouldn’t I line up the slider end with the edge? Thanks for clarifying!

Thank you for this zipper tutorial. I learned something new today . I have a pillow cover that I’am going to put a zipper in .
Love the way you finish the pillows, looks so professional, thank you Sherri, great tutorial 😊

Love this look, this method, and this video. Thank you. I am making all my pillows with this type of a zippered backing.
What a classy way to make a pillow. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for the tutorial. This is the third video I have seen and this I understood so I think I can make it. Greetings from Sweden.
Love this idea. I usually use a zipper anyway, but love the flap idea in another fabric for more interest. Thank you.
❣️🧵✂️
Thanks so much for teaching this method and for your PDF download with measurements. I made a pillow like you instructed and it turned out fabulous!!
Excellent tutorial! Many thank you’s for sharing.
Thanks for the great video :) I always do envelope back pillows but really wanted to learn how to put a zipper in the back for a Christmas gift I'm making. Thanks so much!
Wonderful video and I was wondering where you purchased the Zippers by Annie? Sherrie you are always so inspirational!! Thank you so much!!
Great tutorial! I finished one as I watched. Actually used a 12 inch zipper, but just added pieces of fabric to match the flap. What was that zipper you mentioned?
Sherri, great video! Very clear and detailed. Just what I need. I'm going to be making some pillows now.
Great podcast, love all the tips and you both are so calming. Thanks
Great tutorial. I'll need to try it now. Thank you
cannot wait to try this! Thanks for such a clear tutorial!
Thank you for this tutorial!!! Exactly what I needed to know for my project!❤
Just what I was looking for! Thank you so much. You were very thorough.
Thanks for tut & pdf !! Long time subscriber!!
Great tutorial. I like this look so much better than the fold over back. Great Job explaining everything. Thank you again 😊
Love this way to cover the zipper. Will definitely try it on my next pillow. THANK YOU!!
thank you so much for all the wonderful projects that you share it encourages me to try something new !
What a great way to hide the zipper. Thanks
This is a great tutorial. Thanks 👍
What a great method!
Beautiful.... Do you have a tutorial for making a pillow as well?
Outstanding instructions, just joined 😊
Now if you wanted piping instead of blinding could you sew piping on the front, turn pillow top over so the right sides are facing and then sew and turn. Let me know about doing this method.
This is so...beautiful thank you so much for sharing.
If you decided not to add binding, would you out the pillow front and back right sides together before sewing together?
Great tutorial
Great video.
Great, clear instructions! Thank you!
Great tutorial!!
Omgosh! Soooo stinkin beautiful and you make it look so easy. I’m inspired to make matching pillows for some of my quilts now 😉👍🏼🤗🤗🤗😘
At the 8:21 minute mark, when you say you're pinning the "wrong side of the pillow back bottom" to the zipper - I believe you meant to say "right side of the pillow back bottom." :-)
I'm glad some1 else caught that. I was gonna mention if she ever revises her videos that she may want to go back & add that correction in.
I fell stupid for asking but do you actually cut through the zipper?
Огромное спасибо!!! Так легко и просто объяснили!!! 🥰🥰🥰👏👏👏
At the end the pillow has piping, when do you add the piping? Is there a video for that?
Where can I find that brand of zipper that you recommend for pillows?
I love this finish!! Thanks for the tips on putting this together!❤️
This was a great tutorial--all the other ones I found had steps that I just couldn't follow. Was wondering if I would need to do anything different to use an invisible zipper rather than an all purpose zip since I have so many invisible ones. Would love an answer to this:)
Christie
On the last step are you sewing the two pieces together with the front piece right side up?
