Matt’s not the only member of the band. If you want to know where the middle eastern influences come from, follow Bass/Guitar player Jeff Matz. Jeff’s influence is getting bigger on every record. He’s writing guitar parts and all the middle-eastern influences come from Jeff’s study of the Bağlama and Turkish folk music. Al has nothing to do with this record.
Yes...they are an incredible band, and Jeff is a tremendous musician, his bass lines have always been present, and the work of the new drummer adapts perfectly to the style of the band.
Years ago I saw HoF on tour with Zeke and a bunch of other bands. I came out of that show thinking "Man, that bassist from Zeke would fit High on Fire better than the dude that's in the band now would." A few years later George Rice left and Jeff Matz stepped in. The prophecy was fulfilled, and it has been good ever since.

I think this album is one of their best ever, if not THE best. I'm glad the reviewer mentioned the vocals. Matt is absolutely unhinged on this record in the best way possible. Just caught them in Orlando a few weeks ago and the sound system in the place was absolute shit but the band was incredible. The final number of the evening was Darker Fleece, which also closes the album. That track is absolutely crushing and puts me into an extreme sludge metal trance that is completely hypnotic. Matt's fuzz on that track is so thick and glitchy. I love it so much. Funny the reviewer finds the first half of the album is the best. I found the last half is where it really takes off. Great album. 9/10 for sure.
So glad to see all these metal reviews from this year, I really love the attention you're giving the genre. Of course this is quite the year for quality metal releases so far, so I get why! As for High on Fire, I feel like I've always kind of slept on them, so it's interesting to see you rate it so high.
