Is the Honda Goldwing DCT Overrated? | Four Years of Ownership

  • I've owned my 2018 Honda Goldwing DCT for 4 years. I thought it would be helpful to prospective buyers to provide my perspective.
    Lots of discussion over the years regarding the integration of DCT, the redesign of the body for this generation, and the tech.
    I provide my thoughts on:
    -Engine/Transmission
    -Tech
    -Reliability/Maintainability
    -Storage
    -"Character"
    -and things that could be improved
    Bottom line: It's a reliable, well-performing, tech-driven, luxury bike. It's definitely one of the best touring motorcycles on the market today.
    It doesn't matter what you ride, just ride!!
    Thanks for watching.
    Peace!

    I have the 2019 DCT and absolutely love this bike…. Have done all my own maintenance with Fred Harmons videos and tire changes which saves me a lot in maintenance cost…. I commute to work pretty much everyday and find myself even getting upset when I can’t ride bcs it’s just to cold…lol I’ve seen reviews and sat on other bikes but always walk out thinking I def made the right choice with this DCT… I usually leave it it manual and change the gears myself… sorry for the long post but as u can see I absolutely love this machine… my one and only bike…

      Trust me if I can do it you can… I purchased the centramatics wheel balancers so I don’t need but one wheel weight and that’s only a just in case and the rabaconda tire changer and the longest part is taking the tire off and on the bike…ur review is spot on..

    I love my 2023 Honda Gold Wing Tour DCT. Bought it in Jan 23, 1 mile on it. 18,600 miles on it today. Yes the 16K service was a pain changing the Air Filter. Honda Engineer's "Here is an air box and filter... Let's design the motorcycle around it...". The GW DCT is not my first DCT... I bought a 21 Honda Africa Twin AS ES DCT. It was a pain getting used to it. The Africa twin has 15,600 miles on it and it has also been a fun bike. I have also read GW forum members saying that their to old to ride the GW and that it is to heavy. They mention switching to the Africa Twin. I have to jump on and tell them that the center of gravity on the Africa twin is much higher, and even though the bike is only 550 lbs, it feels much more heavier than the GW. The seat hight on the Africa Twin is much higher than the GW. I would take the GW over a lighter bike like the Africa Twin any day. Easier to handle, walk mode, just easier all around to handle than the Africa Twin.

    • @RobsMotovlogs
      @RobsMotovlogs  7 месяцев назад

      You brought up a great point that i should have included in the video. The center of gravity makes this big girl nimble and easy to handle. In some cases easier than my Super Tenere which is 250lbs lighter

    • @theonlyredspecial
      @theonlyredspecial Месяц назад

      Yes I agree. Had both. The Africa twin is a more difficult bike to move around in the garage due to that higher Center of gravity. Honda Goldwing is really not that big a deal but the reverse comes in handy for me getting up a ramp into my garage.

    I’d have to say that the only concern I have with a Wing is all the covers. I know from owning a few bikes (with far less covers) that doing most maintenance and mods is a pain in the ass. HD is certainly a lot easier to maintain. Also no valve check intervals needed on HD. But other than that the Wing is very appealing in every other feature.

    I know what you mean about the Emergency start up. I also own an Indian Chieftain and without the key its a simple 4 digit code on the touchscreen. Practise the code at home in your garage and then its not such a hassle. Also I keep a spare battery for the fob in the cubby at the front dont put it anywhere that locks. Max at Traxxion Dynamics says you don't need to change your Air Filter nearly as often as Honda says and few know the Goldwing like he and his staff does. In fact I'd belive Max before anything Honda says.. I'll be leaving mine till 50K.

    • @philtil8977
      @philtil8977 7 месяцев назад +2

      I am on my fourth GW and my second DCT. My first was a 1975 and my latest is a 2023 DCT. (Dehydrated and passed out thus totaling my 2021) My 2008 full tank to fumes was 270 miles in all mountain/s riding in western US. My 2023 is full tank to fumes is 265 miles in the same hard riding. (Also , that is one less gallon of gas!)
      Note: as in other machines, including aircraft; you can never make up the fuel used from uphill/climbing when you are doing your downhill. The physics and math do not allow that to occur. A flat, steady state will produce a better fuel burn in those conditions.
      Good Rides
