Another video on using the Air Traffic Control in X-Plane 11. Thanks to the ATC, a large jet flew past just before landing (~22:20), making things a bit harder.
That video was very helpful, thanks! First time Flight Sim user and I know how to take off and land, but that's about it. Your video has given me the confidence to do more than just circle an airport lol. I'll start by copying your flight :)
I dabbled a lot of FS back in the early days and all I had was a flight plan using VORs to go from one airport to another. Thanks for showing how to fly in XP11 using ATC. Can't wait to get my hands on one!
I purchased xplane 11 prior to doing my research unfortunately. So with buying a new desktop and learning I require an adapter for the monitor connection, for my older monitor, I hope to install the program shortly and learn to fly. Great video. I learned a lot!
This helped me so much because I just started the x plane realistic things and am planning oon becoming a better pilot, so this helped me greatly by learning and understanding the Cessna aircraft better :)
Hi Jason -great video. I have been flying FSX since its birth and have flown XPlane since V8 and have always found the ATC on XP either non-existent or an annoyance but your video here with XP v11 gives me another perspective, demonstrating that the ATC does indeed work and pointing out bits of the 172 autopilot that I had not noticed before. Now I can catch up with more realistic flights vying with FSX , notwithstanding the odd heavy being directed through my flight-path :) - do people really think that the default ATC on FSX is perfect? - I must smile at the odd comment below to the actual perfection of your flying -hey, nobody is perfect! Your lesson worked fine for me. Thanks a million - worth a subscription!
As a real world pilot and plane owner, I noticed that you adjusted the flaps on final at a speed of around 130 knots indicated air speed (KIAS). Trust me, if you did that on a real airplane, you would rip the wings off or at least cause structural damage to the airframe. If you want to fly with realism, it would be to your advantage to learn the markings on the air speed indicator. All those pretty colors are put there for a reason.
X-Plane 11 is, as a lot of people know who have this Flight Simulator, so realistic. So even if, like me, you never became a commercial pilot or your love for flying is an important human aspect in life you always can pretend being a pilot. And using all the instruments as it should be. Thumb up from The Netherlands.
You have done everything very well ,The only think I recommend on the Turn coordinator when turn ,make all of your turns Standard Rate turn per IFR .Thank you
Thanks for sharing. I'm a private pilot with about 200 hours of SE time. Going to be using X-plane 11 to "pre-fly" my short cross country flights out of KGAI. Real world ATC would have been busted for that oh-shit moment when the 737 buzzed overhead. I imagine your plane could have gone inverted, but wake turbulence is unpredictable. BTW, I find landings and non-autopilot aircraft control in the sim is far more difficult than in the real world. There's no substitute for the visual perspective, sounds, etc. Of course, sim is a whole lot less expensive! It would be nice if sim let you change your aircraft number and the readback voice, but that's not a game changer.
Looks like you were originally tuning-in to the ILS frequency for RW-25 Right on NavCom 1 with 111.10 at the 20:50 mark, but then your radio configuration ended-up tuned-in to RW-25 Left on 119.90 which is probably more consistent with standard landing procedure at LAX. I think they generally take off from the 2 interior runways 25R and 24L and land on the exterior runways to help with separation. There apparently was a major fatal accident that happened on 24L in 1991 when a 737 was cleared to land and it hit a twin turbo prop waiting for takeoff on the same runway further down the runway. The FAA recommended separating traffic that way but they apparently did not put it into practice until 2004 when another accident almost happened with a 747 landing on the same runway 24L and 737 was lined up and waiting for takeoff 200 feet beneath the path of the 747 landing right above it. Talk about wake turbulence! Anyway, appreciate the the video and you sharing your experience using ATC and AP in X-plane. I picked up a few tips on some things with waypoints in the maps feature and using AP for headings, ascents, holding altitude and the ILS. I know the purpose of the video was to show those features and not how to execute a perfect flare on landing or turn away from wake turbulence on final approach after you had spent time recording an entire video demonstrating other features. Those pointers are helpful in their own way but we should all be willing to show a little humility and grace towards others in the aviation and sim community who work to share their knowledge by recording, editing, narrating and uploading videos with helpful content. Even a seasoned, celebrity actor and pro aviator like Harrison Ford can make a mistake like missing a runway and landing on a taxiway at KSNA. Aviating, navigating, communication and flying in complex airspace is challenging and good pilots never stop learning things in the industry, ever. Keep filiming, keep sharing, keep flying!
Well, it was eye opening in the sense of how amazing XP11 is. I installed it and am learning it little by little. I use 10.51 more because I know it well, but 11 is certainly compelling. Your PC video quality is very high because the AFL 172 looks beautiful. I'm still trying to make it work nicely with both 10.51 and 11. Not easy.
I noticed that, I always have the lockheed blackbirds crash on mine all the time ha, how do you get jets flying around? I only have other Cessna, and Blackbirds?
If you want other planes , that will fly around while you are playing , then you will need to install X-LIFE , it is a plugin , there is a free version and a pay ( extended ) version , but the free version is very very very NICE ! You can download it here : jardesign.org/x-life/www/ *NOTE* ..... It says ' For X-Plane 10 ' but it also works for X-Plane 11 !
I'm simming on the Rift. I'm using flyinside atm. I've always used FSX but FSX kept crashing for me, probably an OOM error. Can't really imagine going back to simming flat after trying it in VR. It's a whole different ballgame. Next step: get my PPL and an old Cessna 150 :)
Fantastic job, I really learned a lot. Yes, there are some things that I would like changed in the program it will come as more people are requesting changes. Thanks again.
I know we joked about the 747 passing above the Cessna, but a lot of you weren't around in September of 1978, when a commercial airliner and a Cessna 172 were in the same type of scenario, and the outcome was very tragic. Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA) flight 182, a Boeing 727, and the Cessna 172 with an instructor and a student pilot, were involved in a mid-air collision, both aircraft crashed into neighborhoods in San Diego, CA and 144 people lost their lives, including 9 on the ground. :-( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PSA_Flight_182
I had to fly a single engine from San Diego to Rapid City SD. the Pilot would be awoken to change Nav. It made me absolute hate single engine planes...hour after hour just hanging there!!! Love the Baron Twin!!!!
Thanks for the ATC demo. But it did raise an issue XP11 should address. When you went to the map at 20:46 (for just a moment before you zoomed in) the heavy jet that overflew you at 22:20 is already shown turning onto the localizer - that should NEVER happen. And, if it's not a system glitch that will be fixed (that is, if occasional ATC errors are built into the system), there needs to be a means by which the PIC can refuse an unsafe ATC instruction rather than just doing a read-back.
I bought a flight sim called "Flight Assignment A.T.P." in 1990 that had better ATC than X-Plane 11. If Laminar would get the ATC up to the level of even FS9, it would be a major improvement.
Nice Demo, Jason! Pilot's response voice should be a totally different voice from voice responses of other aicraft, a 'My Voice' male or female voice, selected upon pilot's option in setup. Yellow text should pop up in pilot's front view for the convenience of users having three monitors. ATC should keep the pilot well above or below large jets ahead on approach to avoid turbulence, and/or no aircraft over flies the pilot out of cleared landing order. Have sent this demo to other XP Sim friends not yet upgraded to XP-11. BruceBuilds on the Gateway.
I'm learning a lot thanks to your videos. I did this exactly as you did and worked just fine. Then I tryed it in my home base flying from SCEL to SCTB and the ATC take me directly to a crash agaisnt a hill. I don't know why. Maybe I should have set a route.
XP11 ATC SUCKS....There I said it. How the HELL can a brand new otherwise really nice sim, be shamed by a sim (FSX) that is over a decade old when it comes to ATC....COME ON LAMINAR! I cant use ATC unless Im IFR???? No VFR ATC is a game breaker for me.....
That's why you need pilotedge! 😃 ......I haven't yet used it, but my friend said it really helped him improve his radio skills. Personally, my VFR ATC comms have become quite good now, so I'm not sure I'll get pilotedge. Just did the San Francisco Class B transition a couple days ago (Southbound, passing Golden Gate bridge, over the Presidio, and flying past KSFO) and landed at KSQL. This is called the "Bayshore VFR transition". I was really nervous, but everything went peachy, except for one time, right on the boundary of the bravo, when I repeatedly asked NorCal app. if I was cleared into the class bravo, and he almost yelled at me and I quote: _"N-E-G-A-T-I-V-E!! Stay outside the bravo until you're further advised!!"_ 😃
I might also add FS2002 Professional. ATC did not oblige you to file an IFR plan. As you said, FS9 was great too. FSX Deluxe/FSX SE/Prepar3D (all licences) are ATC manageable. Hope the folks at Laminar are reading this...
Hey Jason, great video. Question how did you get those voices with atc and the pilot? I'm currently running xplane 11.51 and since i got the sim last year its the same boring robotic voices.
I have an issue with automatic landing. I programmed the correct beacon frequency for the runway but when I selected NAV APR, it was adjusting something but it was not exactly targeting the runway. Am I missing a step?
Hi Jason. Thank you for all your videos, they are very helpful. I have 2 questions:. What is the plugin for for the yellow arrow that shows the way for the taxi, And is the traffic control a plugin or is it standard in x-plane? Thank you and have a great day. Gilbert
I agree with lots of remarks, X-Plane 11 ATC is not fit for purpose . The sim itself is great but the ATC needs a complete overall,.For starters can you speed up the transmission, they sound like a robot with a flat battery.
Pretty good flight but no such thing as runway Twenty Five at KLAX. They are Two-Five Left or Two-Five Right (heading west). Before landing checklist would be nice too.
Hello Jason and thank you for useful video you have been shared with us I have an question about what kind of computer and program to run this game smoothly you will recommended?
I thought the same thing. Unless he only dropped them 10 degrees, I would expect the circuit breaker to pop from the strain on the motors. Or worse, the sudden increase in Gs to burn a motor or break a flap, in which case that aircraft would have been awful tough to land. The trim wheel must have been spinning like a turbine engine to keep the nose down.
Enjoyed the video and your patient voice. Somehow I turned on the green high lights on the yoke and don't see where you turn it off. What is it used for? I made a plan and reached the airport in route but when I got there the controller kept me in a hold pattern at 2000. Seems like I was waiting a long time in pattern. What should you do....almost out of gas.
Did they tell you to hold short or to line up and wait? In the latter case, you have to taxi onto the runway into position and it should move on :-) I had that once.
Do do know why Clearance does not give you the departure frequency? In real life the CRAFT acronym is used the F in CRAFT stands for Departure frequency.
Thanks Jason just what I needed , getting XPlane installed and learning .One question , the Autopilot turn on and off keyboard commands ? Yes do it theru Yoke .Maybe Video you did on that ? keep up good work.
The turbulence just before landing, that was really special.
Whoa, I can't believe ATC allowed that airliner to pass right over your head! The autopilot certainly didn't like that wake turbulence. 🤣
thank you so much for these tutorials. I know they're 2 years old now, but they are REALLY helpful....Really like your channel...
That video was very helpful, thanks! First time Flight Sim user and I know how to take off and land, but that's about it. Your video has given me the confidence to do more than just circle an airport lol. I'll start by copying your flight :)

It seems bizarre to me that they don't simulate flap failure. Seems to come up often enough.
EXCELLENT Video Sir ! I hope you are still making videos. Thank You for this highly instructional and well done video.
I hope to create some more in the next month or so.
X-Plane 11 is, as a lot of people know who have this Flight Simulator,

You have done everything very well ,The only think I recommend on the Turn coordinator when turn ,make all of your turns Standard Rate turn per IFR .Thank you
Lol that 737 flew over a Cessna, caused wake turbulence and landed on the taxiway.
I think approach tower did a great job! :D

OMG ! That jet before you didn't land !!! it "crashed" at 23:38 in that field before the runway ! so it did an go around ! LMAO !
That was the first time that ever happened I was too focused on managing the turbulence LOL.
Well , you have it on tape ! XD
I noticed that, I always have the lockheed blackbirds crash on mine all the time ha, how do you get jets flying around? I only have other Cessna, and Blackbirds?

Im playing this game on mt HTC VIVE and im LOVING it. I bought it recently and its absolutely amazing being able to press all the buttons in vr

Great video, Jason! I'm going to try it this evening. Best regards from The Netherlands.
At least we know the game does have a detailed jet turbulence simulation lol
Feliscatus Xu LOL also love that ATC didn’t care that there was a huge ass jet right above him. 😄
@@unleashedfx7220 lmao
Fantastic job, I really learned a lot. Yes, there are some things that I would like changed in the program it will come as more people are requesting changes. Thanks again.
Why are the readbacks vocalized, but not the actual requests? Kind of takes me out of the ATC experience.
They are vocalized
@@alexsurh1472 Not the initial requests. Only the read backs
X-plane ATC is complete garbage. Why is there only ATC for IFR? It’s really disappointing.
@@TheGbelcher because you can fly vfr without contacting atc lol
Saira Asif Really in B C D airspace?? NOT!!
Caution: wake turbulence. Lol.
Whats funny about that?
Livin that class B life

Genius! Thanks for the explanation. I was having problems with the ATC haha
Thanks Jason !
Your vids have helped me tons, especially since I switched fromfs2004 to xplane 11.
Do wish X-Plane 11 had 'Traffic Zapper.' It came with FSUIPC when I had FSX-SE. Other than that, I do appreciate this, thanks!
Thanks for this. I am new to flight sim and XPlane 11 is great so foar. Soooo much for me to learn! Very exciting!
WOW you actually got into turbulence when the jet flew over you!!! You need to report the near miss to the controller once you land. lol
I had to fly a single engine from San Diego to Rapid City SD. the Pilot would be awoken to change Nav. It made me absolute hate single engine planes...hour after hour just hanging there!!! Love the Baron Twin!!!!
Great Training Videos Learned from all of them
I love how within like 15 seconds you drop flaps in the yellow and then a 74 flies over you by a hundred feet and rocks you with wake turbulence lmao
Instant karma
Thanks for the ATC demo. But it did raise an issue XP11 should address. Skews me while I land my heavy jet over your head lol. Seriously though, great instruction I will probably watch it many times. Thanks!

What sim controls are you using? Great video by the way!
Thank you for sharing the video, I've learned a lot.
Great video, I like your tutorials. Though you could probably edit out (or speed up) the flying parts where nothing is happening. Cheers mate.
Great video. I personally learned a lot. Can't wait to get home and try it. Thanxxxxx
Thanks you taught me my first flight . Newquay to lands end .
Now I understand why they call it the "wake" turbulence... it fkin rocks the plane behind till the pilot wakes up.
Hi, at 6:53 how did you activate the auto pilot. And thanks for teaching me. I’m a newbie to flying
You can bind keys
Coming in for approach! Giant 747 comes right over him. "Tower we a have a bit of turbulence but nothing much." Lol
How did you get the improved voice packs? I don't have anything like them. Mine are totally Cylon.
watched this a few times, many thanks
ok did anyone see the train crash 5:49
lmbo right top of the screen coming under the bridge.

great teaching. Appriciated
I'm learning a lot thanks to your videos. I did this exactly as you did and worked just fine. Then I tryed it in my home base flying from SCEL to SCTB and the ATC take me directly to a crash agaisnt a hill. I don't know why. Maybe I should have set a route.

Moved from FSX to xplane 11 and two things I miss. ATC and proper AI traffic
I might also add FS2002 Professional.
ATC did not oblige you to file an IFR plan.
As you said, FS9 was great too.
FSX Deluxe/FSX SE/Prepar3D (all licences) are ATC manageable.
Hope the folks at Laminar are reading this...
X-Plane is a very nice Sim and more realistic than FSX. But the ATC ist the reason why I don't bus it.
Hey Jason, great video. Question how did you get those voices with atc and the pilot? I'm currently running xplane 11.51 and since i got the sim last year its the same boring robotic voices.
did anyone see how the autopilot was disconnected, what keyboard key did that, if that is how that was done? Great job
He's got a video called Cessna 172 Autopilot (updated). In that video he configures a button that disables the autopilot. Go check it out.
I have an issue with automatic landing. I programmed the correct beacon frequency for the runway but when I selected NAV APR, it was adjusting something but it was not exactly targeting the runway. Am I missing a step?

Pretty good flight but no such thing as runway Twenty Five at KLAX. They are Two-Five Left or Two-Five Right (heading west). Before landing checklist would be nice too.
Do you have the graphics turned down? Didn’t see any LA’s buildings.
Hello Jason and thank you for useful video you have been shared with us I have an question about what kind of computer and program to run this game smoothly you will recommended?
Excellent tutorial! Thank you...
They need to talk to google about the ATC audio..this sound more like Microsoft from 20 years ago..
Did you really extend the flaps at over 120 knots?
I thought the same thing. Unless he only dropped them 10 degrees, I would expect the circuit breaker to pop from the strain on the motors. Or worse, the sudden increase in Gs to burn a motor or break a flap, in which case that aircraft would have been awful tough to land. The trim wheel must have been spinning like a turbine engine to keep the nose down.

My check in with controller is greyed out. I've been holding short for almost an hour
Did they tell you to hold short or to line up and wait? In the latter case, you have to taxi onto the runway into position and it should move on :-) I had that once.
atc is good for familiarization especially prior to learning vatsim...pilot edge etc
Thanks Jason i would like to see more of this!! how would you go about setting your own flight plans from state to state?
Just amazing ! Huge thanks !!
How do you get so much planes on 1 map. When I fly, it is me and an Stinson L-5.
You can change it in Options
Do do know why Clearance does not give you the departure frequency? In real life the CRAFT acronym is used the F in CRAFT stands for Departure frequency.
Which mods used for map?
Altimiter 2992 is not altitude it is barometric pressure. You adjust your altimeter guage to get the correct altitude. It's 29.20 in of mercury.
Hi John, love your videos. New to Xplane. Right now I'm using a mouse for yoke. Anyway to control senitivity ?
Very nice video, Jason...!
so, the guidance should be vloc not gps. is that correct? thanks.
Is there a cheat sheet of XP11 commands, like how to quickly pull up ATC or the map, as you did on the video?
Go to settings and check out the keyboard commands...
So which one do you use to enter your flight plan, the garmin 530 or the way you have demonstrated in this video?
Thanks Jason just what I needed , getting XPlane installed and learning .One question , the Autopilot turn on and off keyboard commands ? Yes do it theru Yoke .Maybe Video you did on that ? keep up good work.
