Yamaha Campus 60 TEST RIDE, shifter adjustment YJ2

  • In this video we take the Campus 60 for a ride and find it wasn't shifting into 3rd gear. All down shifts worked well. The bike also died on me on the ride after about a mile. It would start back up but if given any throttle it would die again. Sounds like a blocked pilot jet, also wondered about a bad condenser or coil. But it really sounds more like the pilot jet. I did adjust the shifter successfully and recleaned the carburetor. Then I took it for another test ride, and it performed flawlessly.

    This little bike has been a great story (except for the shifter, that brought back the Hodaka nightmares!), especially when you were riding, that whine from the transmission is exactly as I remembered it.

      Hey Wayne, thank you for your comments about this series. This is a fun one for me also, since I had one of these around 1967. It has brought back a lot of fond memories for me also. I don't ever remember having to work on the shifter of the one I owned. But I do remember working on the shifters of the many Hodaka's I owned. The Hodaka was a better set up to adjust than this one. The dealer I worked for in the early 70's had a cut away case assy. You just bolted the side cover to it and made all the adjustments. Then reinstalled it on your bike.....worked perfect.

    I found my OEM main jet was specced for sea level, I think they are all like this ex factory. I didn't touch the pilot jet. Since I was riding at 4 000ft ASL, I reduced the main jet. I bought 3 smaller jets and experimented. I increased the oil flow above the alignment mark (a WAG 🙂) to protect the bearings since a leaner setting causes the engine to run hotter. It worked on my TS185, revs climbed through the power band and cleaner exhaust.

    • @montana2strokeracer
      @montana2strokeracer  4 месяца назад +1

      Sounds like a solid plan Steve, I think most of the bikes imported to the states were jetted for sea level except for those sent to the Rocky Mountain region. In my experience most of them were jetted a bit leaner. But still not lean enough for much over 5200 ft.

    Lol Dale, I thought I was gonna have to jinx your bike and make you take apart the clutch basket. I'm sure you watched my video where mine gave me fits. I got it working fine, but I hear gear whine. Which I didn't think was normal since I don't hear that on any other bikes or even the Trailmaster 80 (which is basically the same bike). But I noticed yours makes the same sound, so I'm guessing it's all good? But definitely thank you for the 2mm washer fix for the shifting. My Trailmaster does the same thing and I kinda put that bike to the side because I couldn't figure out the cryptic info about the concentric nut and my adjustments of said nut failed. Now I'll get the Trailmaster out and give it a whirl again. So thanks for the video and thank you very much for the tip. I hope you guys are doing great.

    • @montana2strokeracer
      @montana2strokeracer  3 месяца назад +1

      Hey Greg, yes please don't jinx my bike, it was a real bugger trying to figure it out. Think a lot of it was luck tell you the truth. Yes, I couldn't see much difference with the excentric bolt adjustment, the real difference was with the washer on the push rod in the sprocket. I bet you can figure it out, and yes, the wine in low gear is normal. We are doing fine here with summer finally getting here. Hope you folks are enjoying your summer also. Take care Greg, watching for your new video adjusting that shifter, or anything else you put out.

      @montana2strokeracer  3 месяца назад

      Thanks Lynn, believe me there was a lot of head scratching going on. I think the hardest thing to find for those Trail Boss's is the countershaft sprocket. The last couple times I needed one, I had to just find a sprocket with the right pitch and cut the old teeth off on the lathe and weld the new teeth on to the old internal part. What a hassle, but nice machines they are.

    The shift mechanism in those old bikes left a lot to be desired with the small and kinda under powered engines of the time you did a lot of shifting an that shift mechanism wore a lot a lot of that wear was from getting dry a lack of lubrication newer bikes with the shifter mechanism built inside the transmission constantly lubricated with oil held up much longer and shifted smoother

    I just recently bought one of these awesome little bikes. i had a problem and was wondering if you could give me an idea of whats wrong. i road it for weeks and just today i took off the air filter housing and exhaust to clean up the body, mine wasnt as clean as yours. i popped on the filter and exhaust and took it down the road where it chugged for a moment and died. then i turned it back on and it idled but as soon as i twist the accelerator the engine died. over and over it would do this. i opened the side case to look inside pulled the carburetor too look, put it back, and then a few times later it would no longer turn on at all. i spent the whole day in research and best i could find was the carburetor needed to be cleaned but i took it out and cleaned it and nothing. it cranks but nothing will get it turned over. thanks for the video, i hope you have some idea of a solution or avenue for me.

    • @montana2strokeracer
      @montana2strokeracer  Месяц назад +1

      This is textbook, plugged pilot jet, you said you took the carb off, but did you soak and clean the inside, the pilot jet is the smallest one in there, be careful removing it as it can be stripped or the head broken off very easy. The hole in it will be so small that you can barely see through it if it is not plugged. This is the first place I would look. Before you do this try spraying a little squirt of gas in the air horn on the carb, then kick it over, if it hits, almost guarantee it is the pilot jet. Good luck with your project.

So, I just took compressed air and blew around the holes on the perimeter. It seemed ok. Didn't find anything in the pilot jet either. I didn't have the same problem on the last test ride, so can we say with certainty that it fixed itself? No.....but hoping!
