I REBUILT A HONDA CB250 SUPER DREAM THEN TRIED TO RIDE IT

- In this video, I finally bring back to life a 1986 Honda CB250N Super Dream back after it sat untouched for 38 years! This classic bike was last ridden in 1986, and now, after an extensive rebuild, it's time to find out if all the hard work has paid off.

Just a bit of advice, but you shouldn't sand blast the inside of the brake caliper piston housing.
Thanks for the advice! Please share why
@@BikesofRye Sandblasting is abrasive and you have now removed the very smooth finish on the inside of the piston housing. This will have altered the clearance between the piston and the housing and there also could be more friction between the surfaces.
@@henrycanal6808 thanks for the informative response - these are the comments we all want to see. Cheers!
@@BikesofRye No worries! Good to see a bike not being left to rot away.
Hi, I have owned and ridden several Dreams and Superdreams over the years and from the audio I think you may be suffering from the dreaded cam rattle. If you check the cam for ovality and the rocker lobes you will be able to tell for sure, they were a weak point. Other than that, well done and keep going with the rebuilds.
Thanks for the feedback and I would say sometimes the gopro audio through a helmet mic can make the bike sound different. It does to me anyway when I listen to it back. In person it sounds solid. I do need to balance the carbs though
@@BikesofRye There may be some of that. However, most every other youtube superdream video was also shot with a gopro, so you might want to consider that it does, actually, sound pretty rough. My old superdream was a proper shed, and although it's been 40 years since I had it, I do not remember it sounding like that. My worry wouldn't be the cams as much as the crap that's managed to make its way into the bottom end - ASAIK you didn't disassemble beyond the bottom of the barrels, but the bottom end of the engine got shipped all over the place, open to the weather, and got a load of assorted butchery applied to it to remove the busted stud.
And to follow up from my previous comment, you need to get rid of the entire front brake setup, stat. You absolutely do not sand blast the inside of brakes - they're ruined, and it's them that's supposed to save you from the bloke who stands on his brakes in front of you with no warning. Been there, done that.
The paint looks lovely. Well done.
Wow that sounds ruff
Thanks George! ❤
It's got them cams that were made of cheese. Sounds like a bag of nails. Can you not hear it ?
The part where the engine was stone cold, and with carbs that obviouslyneed tuning? Can you hear that part?
I would say that the tacho is shot - it doesn't seem to react to engine speed changes (frinstance when you change gear). Watch between 16:27 & 16:36 - initially it is very sluggish, then between 16:34 & 16:36 it whizzes up to the red line while the engine note rises steadily. 17:35 to 17:37 - engine accelerates loads, tacho moves a couple of hundred rpm; change gear at 17:38, tacho doesn't drop at all, but in fact carries on going up..... unless the soundtrack is out of kilter with the picture?
Unfortunately, as others have said - the engine doesn't sound 100%. Back in the day (I was 21 when this bike was registered), Superdreams were a very quiet engine, with just a little bit of camchain rustle. Having said that, it is likely to carry on running and rattling for few thousand miles yet! So well done!!
But PLEASE get some soft jaws for your vices!!!!
Hey great job and I hate to criticise anything but you really need to be careful spraying 2k paint. You really should have an air fed mask and protect your skin it's really bad stuff and could give you some serious issues. Nice job though and sorry for the doom and gloom message just wouldn't want anything bad to happen to you.
No need to say sorry!! All for constructive criticism mate. I discovered how messy it is and will certainly be looking at getting a little spray booth in the workshop
I agree. My Grandad was a bodywork specialist back in the late 60s/early 70s. He passed in 2010 from motor neurone disease and although there are no specific triggers as to what causes it, there’s a link between bodywork specialists and MND.
I’ve got a real soft spot for the Superdream. You’ve done a cracking job on it. Black is my favourite colour though 😉
Great job Rye!
You’ve inspired me to do a full strip down and rebuild of my Ducati Diavel.
I’m nearly there now too, I’m just waiting on 2 MAP sensors and the fairings to be painted. I tried painting myself however I really screwed up the Matt finish. So it’s gone to a professional.
But everything else, I’ve managed to do myself. Hard work and Google 😂
Thanks mate
If you want to compare the two Honda 250 offerings of that time, I have a 1980 CB250RS. Also dragged out of a garage last year after 37 years of being parked up! My tax disc is also 1986 😂 I'm only in Ashford 😉
Oh nice! Will you be installing the old tax disc too 😅 how did you find the rebuild?
@@BikesofRye The 1986 tax disc has pride of place on the bike! The guy who dragged it out of the garage got it basically running. I then, rather ambitiously, rode it back from the Lake District after it had covered less than 2 miles since 1986... Yes it broke down, and it took me two days, but it got me home and the proper rebuild began. I actually bought another CB250RS that had nicer blue paint rather than repaint mine.
@@MrDesmonick the 250RS is great bike, I had one myself in the days when learners could still ride 250's
Well done that bike looks great, it’s been a pleasure to watch you rebuild it 🏴👍
Awesome mate..sounds as sweet as a nut too..and that colour,,,love it.well done on the rebuild,it's a stunner.
sounds fucked MATE
Haha you're fuming
@@murffff 😂🤣😂
"check this out" *ad plays* ...ahhh love youtube
My dad left when i was a baby.
When i was 14 he turned up on his 250 superdream and took me for a ride to see his mum, my nana i had never met.
I remember the bike and thinking he was a cool biker.
This was 1984.
I obviously didnt make a good impression as he never ever came back to see me again.
Im 54 now. He is now passed. But i will always remember that superdream.
You did it,, good man remember I was 61 year old riding my super dream it was 43 year old I had the same bike at 18 and past my test on the same bike. In August I moved on to a suzuki GS650G 43 year old bike, wrapped up now for winter. Can't wait for next spring take care. 😊
What a journey its been. Ive seen your skillset and knowledge expand massively throughout the course of the project. I hope your very proud of yourself. Too many people will criticise but have never actually attempted to fully rebuild a bike. I know what its like to self teach this stuff and you've not given up were most people would have.
Keep it up and im definitely looking forward to more 👍
I have just recommissioned an old Honda Rebe 250 that has stood for 20 years. Think it's the same engine but sigle carb thank goodness . Tank had intenal rust . I had to fit a new chinese tank . The engine is almost silent but I know they always sound worse through a mike so yours may be ok when heard normally . Both my tyres were age cracked so I had to replace them . They are great bikes once sorted . Not fast but reliable and easy to ride. Nice job you did . I really enjoyed the video .
Well done not knocking you at all , but its certainly not sounding as it should sound. a little top end rattle cams maybe. Check out other bikes on RUclips you will see.
The carbs need setting up and plus it hasn't been ran for a very long time. Do you not think it improved longer into the vid once it warmed up?
Brilliant ,thanks for saving it . Used to commute in and out of London on an old tatty black one with the tattiest Rickman fairing on it you could imagine .all weathers , never ever let me down .👍
Shes a beauty mate , great job , brakes probably started feeling better gradually as the pads and disc bed in
FANTASTIC JOB. Same color as my 1979 250n superdream. Brakes prob felt better because the pads were bedding in. Best rebuild channel on YT.
Appreciate you mate
Well done, your hard work has paid off, I had a 250N when I was 20 in 1983!! Then ended up with a 400 Dream!! Lovely to see them getting rescued…. Enjoy the vids - makes me want to have a go!! Keep them up!! Martin/Suffolk
Very cool!
When you sandblasted the inside cylinder of the brake caliper and not honing it, I thought it was done for, instead it’s working like a dream. Great work Rye, you always pull through. The bike looks really good too. I knew you could do it👏 P.S. props for keeping it real.
Thanks! And noted for the future on the honing! I need to practice that little skill
Looks great this brings back great memories on my 250 who ever gets your 250 will be a very lucky person l do envy them yes you did have some down times but look what you have done l well sir you have done a great job thanks for your videos just wish I could ride your bike love it 👏👏👏👍😊
Thanks 👍
It's so nice seeing your highs and lows with your super dream restoration. It just proves if you've got the right attitude, then good things happen - well done! 👍👍👍
So true!
Love your perseverance when things go wrong. I’d be doing a John Cleese with a big stick 🤣👍
Oh man let me tell you there were times I wanted to hit the bike with more than a tree branch 🤣
Good to see a Superdream being saved , really enjoying this great bikes 🤟
That's what it's all about isn't it! The bike is able to see another open road 😀
Your joy at the first ride was nIce to see. Well Done for sticking with it! 👍
Ah man, you know when you spend so long on something it leaves you in a bit of shock when you find it actually carrying you down the road. It's quite the emotional rollercoaster rebuilding motorcycles
To be honest, mate, it sounds as rough as a badger's ar53. If my memory serves me right Superdreams are supposed to have a smooth, whistly sound which yours most certainly does not.
I got told the same thing about the Thunderace I rebuilt. And I will hear the same thing with every rebuilt motorcycle. Mate
Sounds normal to me
@@BikesofRye DON'T shoot the messenger. Mate.
Best regards, dear heart xx
Congratulations, the bike looks great.
Thanks Mark for the feedback 👍🏼
A fantastic achievement. Well done 🎉
Thank you so much 😀
Excellent. I bought a cheap 1980 CB250N Superdream a few months back. It was running, but only just. It was really just a bit of a whim - I wanted to get a bike on the road and enjoy a few miles before the end of Summer. It has been such good fun - I've now done over 600 miles on it and have decided to keep it - it hasn't missed a single beat. It is extremely comfortable to ride even for my old bones (I am 65), and I'm happy to sit on it for an hour (plus) at a time.
I didn't do a full restoration - that will come later I just wanted it to run well and look OK. But the carbs were a nightmare at first. I ended up completely stripping them and cleaning them in an ultrasonic cleaner - which worked a treat.
I noticed that it looked like your balance chain tensioner was at its limit of adjustment. It is easy (with the clutch cover off) to move the adjustment 'thing' (strange slotted moving do-dah) round on its splines and get lots more adjustment. I did this to mine and it smoothed out the engine no end.
I never fancied it as a bike when I was younger, and am amazed by the number of people (older men usually) who talk to me and say it was the bike they always wanted (or the bike they had). I wasn't expecting to like it all all. But it is such a fun little bike to ride on country roads.
I've actually bought some luggage for it, and am so tempted to do a 'silly' long ride on it next year (like the NC500).
Nice job - it looks great.
Well done mate you've done a great job here. It doesn't matter what kind of bike I'm working on, it's always a thrill to get them out on the first ride, especially when they don't break down! 😂
Brilliant Job well done on the rebuild..its such a buzz to rebuild a bike and then ride it for the first time...I had a Honda Super Dream back in the 80s
Rev counter not right.
Undo engine case where cable connects. And make sure it's messing correctly. Sounds like it's not. Easy fix and easier to get it wrong. Other than that nice work.
Front caliper 😱
1980's 250n rider. yes I know they were slow but a little change in gearing could help, 1 or 2 teeth up on the front and 2 to 4 down on the back. the engine could take that. the exhausts also strangled the breathing as did the air filter.change that and go up a jet size or 2 . solid engine that would take a few mods, not LC fast but,a little more ommph
Well done - great job. I’ve really enjoyed following this. I also restored a cb250n 20 years ago when I was 17/18. Brought back some great memories.
Well done - great job. I’ve really enjoyed following this. I also restored a cb250n 20 years ago when I was 17/18. Brought back some great memories.
A really good hack I use to bleed the front brake on my trail bikes is to squeeze the lever in as far as it will go, then zip strip it to the handle grip and leave it overnight. The pressure atomisers the large air bubbles and they bleed back by themselves into the reservoir. Works really well keep up the vids mate thoroughly enjoy them, best way to learn is to have a crack at anything cheers.
I've owned 4 250 Superdreams and 2 400's over the years and most who knock them have never had one as they're great little bikes that do what they were designed to do perfectly, the 400 is really nice.
Great job but I do agree with others abut the sound of it,I know just rebuilt, low miles so far etc but it does sound a bit rough for a S/Dream and I've done a lot of miles of them over a lot of years.
Amazing job - thanks for sharing! I am just waiting for my 1988 CB450S to get her restoration finished. I put some 100k km on the speedometer while travelling through half of Europe (and beyond) before I left it in my barn for more than 20 years. I just can’t wait to see it back on the streets… Greetings from Germany.
Use plumbers thread tape on the bleed nipple to stop air being pulled back into the system through the bleed nipple threads - saves an awful lot of time lost bleeding brakes
I had one of these many bikes ago.Just bullit proof. Rode it like a firebalde . Just one bad thing. absolutely crap brakes. the bike ended when a clown pulled out on me, ending it's life.
I had the luck of the bends at boxhill on my daily commute before the 50mph speed limit. Ditto on the sandblasting inside the brake cyclinders. Not sure if it's the mic, as did sound a bit rough.
That was awesome ! My second bike was a 250 super dream on a “V” plate…. The sound of the engine in your vid brought back all the memories…. Wonderful….
Looks very nice. I don't know if the mike is a bit sensitive in the upper frequency range but it sounds a little ticky in the top end. Might be worth checking out. These engines are known for timing chain and cam issues. My own 250 Drean rattled away quite voaclly. I didn't care as it was worth very little at the time, the early eighties, but this bike is now worth the effort.
..I can remember spending 6/7 hours Bleeding the front brake on the 400 CC version of that!
My first bike was a 250N super dream so it’s amazing to see one look like mine back in the early 80s. Plus it sounds the same too so well done fella getting it back to its original condition. I’d love to have that bike in my garage so one of your patrons is going to be a lucky guy or girl.
very well done - you've shown tenacity and the never say die attitude and you deserved that ride. yes, you're right it needs a few tweaks shall we say, but once you've got those tweaks ironed out it'll run much sweeter - cam chain tension and balance weight chain tension adjustments ought to reduce those rattles - the tacho looks screwed though, seamed to lag BTW - did you manage to salvage the brake master cylinder or did you get a replacement? you didn't say. really really enjoyed the series, probably cos I had one of these in the 80s. I've been on forums recently asking if anyone has my old bike cos I'd like to restore it if it hasn't rusted away. congrats on a good job and I've been watching you since you started and you are definitely learning
When bleeding the calliper normally you’ve got to pull the lever for fluid to flow through…
If you’ve got it mostly bled, just pull the lever and secure it overnight… when you come back in the morning the brake will be solid.
Well done M8 bet you are glad that projects over haha absolutely love that colour blue and watching you rebuild it it's been entertaining keep it up look forward to next episode.
Brilliant job, the bike looks great. Worth all the blood, sweat, and tears. And the satisfaction of bringing an unloved bike back to life. Cheers, looking forward to the next one. Take care.
Nice one ryan, bike looks good, i,m sure your haters will be checking your video out and i wonder if they will take you up on your challenge and show you their bikes?😂
Lovely job. That looks great. Thanks for all the highs and low of rebuilding old bikes. 👍👍👍👍
Just watched the entire rebuild, thank you for saving what to me as a young teenager was the ultimate motor bike the "dream" in fact. It is stunning only thing is i would have kept it black but the blue is nice.
I would like to see more of the paint job you did on the tank? How did you do the Honda logo?
Well done, you’ve done a great job, I’ve had a 250 and a 400, great bikes, love them or hate them
great job. Well done
Thank you! Cheers!
Have you not considered doing a college course in motorcycle mechanics ? Also you shouldn't of sand blasted the area were the brake piston sits as its a machined surface for a reason
A brill job I love my 250 in blue as well ,I've just got to replace throttle cables next ,love ur vids
Sounds SWEEETTT!!!
At least someone reckons so!! Thank you 😊
Disappointed by the lack of hammer action in this upload.........
You have put the tank decals too high on the tank, that’s a shame because you had done a good job otherwise.
Passed my test on one of these with a sidecar on it in 1989 and I can remember that these calipers were like hens teeth even back then.
in process of rebuilding a 83 gpz750
Well done! Great rebuild. Another classic saved!
Try 80 mph sounds beautiful tho
Comstar wheels have been known to crack around the rivets
Great job bud as always hats off to u 👏 the dream looks fantastic
You’ve exceeded yourself on this one. It looks spanking.
People were commenting on the rough sounding engine. I checked around RUclips and quite a few of them sound like yours.
It obviously performs well. Balance the carbs I reckon.
Top job 👌🏻
In person it sounds great I think. And yes carbs need balancing 😁
Bike seems to run quite well, which is a surprise given the nature of those Keihin CV carbs with the metal slides. I was a bit concerned when the idle wouldn’t settle but it seemed to just be adjustment as it sounded slow and steady when hot. Seemed to go ok by Superdream standards, the 250 was always a solid bike but overweight and underpowered. Honda actually got worse at making 250 parallel twins as time went on for some reason, a CB72 or CB250K1 would absolutely blow the doors off the CB250N despite being a 10-15 year older design with only two valves per cylinder.
I've learnt that it takes quite a while to warm up! Once it was warm it rode almost perfectly. Carbs need balanced though. And yes it's not very fast!!
Ime delighted to see the old honda ride again 🤗 in 1997 I had a HONDA CB250RS in red and I crashed it into a river and left it thare for 3 days cos I was hurt 🤕 I went with my uncle and fished it out the river with a tractor and after a few hours fetling fresh fuel oil and filters it started with 10 kicks 💪👍 love these old Hondas ❤
They are unstoppable 🤣
Looks great and well done for persevering.
Well done mate loved watching this rebuild, looks amazing in that blue top job.
Thank you 😊 on to the next one now!
Fantastic result Bud, well done.
Well done, looks fab. Doesnt sound like I remember my old SD but hey. Passed my test in mine in 79.
In person you'd probably think it does, or maybe if I record it with my decent camera and mic stood back from it. Once the carbs are balanced I think it will improve it. Plus its an aftermarket exhaust system
Well done, you got there in the end. 👍👍
2 pry bars back to back will have pulled the brake piston out in 5 mins
You say that... but let me tell you I tried many tricks. You'd have to get brutal with the caliper and risk damaging it
Cracking job, think you need to fine tune the engine that's another final vid for you
Absolutely! Need to balance the carbs
Braking point .......... pun intended ? 🤔
Well done mate, she looks sweet.
well done for sticking it out and not quitting like so many do when the going gets tough
Thanks yes I am lucky this is my motivation... otherwise it would still be sat unfinished! 😅
Skipped a few steps there at the end? Did you actually fix anything yourself?
Why not show the clutch and brake being fixed?
Did you see how easy it was to remove the plates once I had the lock nut tool? It was a simple reversal. I sorted the brake by purchasing a new front brake master cylinder. I was supposed to mention it on my first ride sorry!!
@BikesofRye you didn't show the most interesting bits. Should have spent less time contemplating life and got stuck in. Like why did you get 6 springs instead of 4? A bit of drama in getting sent the wrong parts would be better viewing than trying to hide it.
Big ol well done chap
Well done buddy.. 👏🏼
Look a WT DREAM 😅
Carbs need balancing
Has it got an MOT before you rode it?
Great question - it's MOT and Tax Exempt!
Well done 👏
Well done buddy 👍
cracking job well done i had one years ago
Do you miss it?
How great does that look! Great job mate 😎
Glad you like it thanks 😊
nice job im a honda fan so its nice to see someone save another lovly honda my favourite manufacturer . ive built 100,s and there always a pleasure to work on so much easyier than other bikes hondas rule.

GREAT JOB
Weldone lad
one way to help get the air out of front brake is to put a laggy band on the brake to handle bar overnight
Yes heard about this! Got to give it a try
@@BikesofRye it does work ive done it many times
Quite a transformation from that rusty old nail you picked up six months ago! Is it me or is the tacho a bit lazy? It's not matching the engine revs and you seemed to be bouncing off the redline before the needle caught up. You might want to pop the housing open and see if it's gummed up.
Yes noticed that the rev counter seemed to be reacting slowly... It has been out of the engine casing and all clean - I wonder if the cable needs lube?
@@BikesofRye After 40 or so years of gently rusting I think I'd splash out on a new one as they're only about a tenner as an OE part. David Silver's the man for all classic Honda spares. If that doesn't fix it, then the tacho head mechanism probably needs cleaning and lubing.
@@luddite6239 perfect thanks!
