I always cut my vines longer than needed and hang them lower than I want.
That way, after the vine is tied to the tree limb and left to hang with the weight of the vine pulling down on that limb, I will then use my saw or loppers and cut the limb to the necessary height, usually about belly high.
This saves having to keep adjusting the length of the rope to get the right height.

Same. I have a few that get used year-round almost daily. No need to touch them. Those vines are gold at this point... Vines definitely work the best. Haven't tried a rope.

Good idea to put on the edge of a food plot? Tons of activity through there.

You want to put them in areas that you want to define or direct movemnet. While you can put one up on a plot, the plot already defines movement. It would be better to put one in an area with multiple trails and use it to direct the deer to one trail in front of a stand.

Do you need the licking branch or can you just do the scrape?

I'd definitely use a branch too. They use that a ton especially this time of year. They don't really scrape the ground till October... But man do they LOVE that branch. (from what I've seen)

My most successful ones are near high traffic areas. I made one two years ago that they didn't hit much but now they do also every day, all year long.

I may have gotten lucky. Dialing in the perfect licking branch is key (size, movement, location, space around it and type).
