It's rare to see a guest on a talkshow who's this relaxed, self-confident and authentic. Mr. McConaughey seems to be a guy who has pretty much figured out what life's about and what it's not about.

I thought a lot about fighting bears too. I always thought to sacrifice my left hand by shoving it as far down the bear’s throat as it can go, then stabbing it just above the collarbone and in line with the throat. Maybe even behind the throat and cutting forward with a sawing motion.

In the position he's depicting, the bear would cut to his bones on his back and legs with its claws, and rip out the side of his throat with its teeth.
This was all a joke on Matthew's part, I'm certain, or at least in whimsical jest.
But, seriously, do everything you can to avoid having a bear that close to you.
edit: I can only state the above as face, because at one point, I too, believed I could take a bear in a fight, if I had a big knife. And did believe so, for a good long while, until I finally really started looking into the reality of a bear vs. a person with a knife, and uhh, yeah, the bears win, even if they loose, too.

A bear will crush your skull with one bite. I do not recommend you fight a bear like that. The movie with Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin is the only way to fight off and kill a bear without a gun. Sorry can't remember the name of the movie.
