    Interesting how different the Sunday shows looked back then. Much more formal, and neither the panelists/commentators nor Gov. Reagan interrupted one-another. Nowadays they all talk over one-another, speak almost solely in sound bytes, and don't really listen when someone else is talking.

    Strictly speaking, Ford wasn't running for re-election. He was appointed vice president when Spiro Agnew resigned, and took office after Richard Nixon was forced out. He was running for President in 1976, NOT re-election, seeing as he wasn't elected president or vice president in the first place!

    • @Bklyn93
      @Bklyn93 5 лет назад +16

      When an incubent or inherited President seeks their own term, it is considered their second term: EG when Harry Truman ran in 1948, he was running for a second term (first elected); when Lyndon Johnson ran in 1964, he was running for his second term (first elected). It's just an easier manner of speech; it's weird to use the phrase "President Ford is running for election." An incumbent President runs for re-election, not election. And while technically Ford wasn't ELECTED in a popular election, he was (s)elected and voted upon by the Congress of the United States, who themselves are directly elected as instruments of the public will and sentiment, and as such one could argue President Ford, by being ratified as President by Congress, was indirectly elected by the American public, in this case by proxy.

    I don’t know how Republican voters in 1968 chose Richard Nixon over Ronald Reagan, and in 1976 they chose Ford over Reagan, glad they chose him in 1980 & 1984.

    • @Bklyn93
      @Bklyn93 5 лет назад +11

      In 1968, Richard Nixon had a pretty solid moderately conservative record and was viewed as the most mature candidate. He was able to unify the Republican Party, which was divided between the Liberal wing led by Nelson Rockefeller, and the Conservative wing led by Ronald Reagan. Nixon was chosen in 1968 simply because he appealed to the vast majority of Republican voters. No one in 1968 knew Watergate would happen. In 1968, Ronald Reagan only had one year of any sort of political experience compared to Nixon's 21 years and his candidacy was seen by some as happening too soon. Reagan had also signed very controversial bills into law in California in 1967 such as bills legalizing abortion and no fault divorce which hampered him with conservatives.
      In 1976, Ford while not as popular with conservatives as Reagan was more popular nationally. Reagan, at the last minute, also lost the support of a good chunk of conservatives by selling out and saying Richard Schweiker, a Republican with a VERY Liberal record, would be his running mate. This caused Conservatives at the Convention to switch their votes to Ford, who had picked Bob Dole, who at the time was seen as basically akin to Reagan, just not as charismatic.

    2:50 mistakes in Vietnam concluded that it began when the US Government closed down the Consulate in Hanoi in 1954. Overreacting to a invisible attack in 1964 later identified as Radar error. Also not considering placing troops at the neutral zone in Vietnam in 1973 and closing all bases down in South Vietnam. Other mistakes the US made was not placing troops in Laos as a buffer between the Pathet Lao zones and the Lao Kingdom zones. Lastly the mistake in Cambodia was instead of marching into Phnom Penh to remove Lon Nol. The US Government recognizes his regime making the world mad at the USA.
