- Gov. Ronald Reagan on how he differs from President Gerald Ford, and what he stands for like smaller government and reduced spending on the June 1, 1975 edition of Face the Nation. (CBS NEWS)
Interesting how different the Sunday shows looked back then. Much more formal, and neither the panelists/commentators nor Gov. Reagan interrupted one-another. Nowadays they all talk over one-another, speak almost solely in sound bytes, and don't really listen when someone else is talking.
Soundbytes, Memorized and rehearsed.
Bingo!
Your exactly right the debate with Trump was and embarrassment
absolutely right- also you can take Reagan's statements- play them today and they apply-even more so
Strictly speaking, Ford wasn't running for re-election. He was appointed vice president when Spiro Agnew resigned, and took office after Richard Nixon was forced out. He was running for President in 1976, NOT re-election, seeing as he wasn't elected president or vice president in the first place!
When an incubent or inherited President seeks their own term, it is considered their second term: EG when Harry Truman ran in 1948, he was running for a second term (first elected); when Lyndon Johnson ran in 1964, he was running for his second term (first elected). It's just an easier manner of speech; it's weird to use the phrase "President Ford is running for election." An incumbent President runs for re-election, not election. And while technically Ford wasn't ELECTED in a popular election, he was (s)elected and voted upon by the Congress of the United States, who themselves are directly elected as instruments of the public will and sentiment, and as such one could argue President Ford, by being ratified as President by Congress, was indirectly elected by the American public, in this case by proxy.
Nixon resigned and wasn’t forced, he probably would have been forced if he stayed though.
@@ruthenium5765- I was there. He resigned because they were drawing up articles of impeachment, and he knew he was going to lose the upcoming trial. That qualifies as being forced out of office!
@@Bklyn93 -Well, it's a fine line. Some of the news media reported, as you say, that Ford was running for reelection. Some reported he was running for election. Same was true with Truman and TR.
President Reagan so outclassed Joe Biden and Donald Trump!
"I cannot support the size of the deficit". Proceeds as President to generate the largest deficits up to that point.
Yep, by an ever radical spending Democrat controlled Congress. Even under his Presidency.
And yet the Dems voted for and passed his budgets. Still falls on them lmao
Do belive Tip O Neil had some say in that spending.
Wrong brain surgeon money bills start in the house of representatives. Controlled at the time by the loonie left democrats.
Those deficits bankrupted the Soviet Union though. Well worth the cost.
I don’t understand why Reagan’s hair is so perfect???
🤔🤔🤔
that's probably because he has a stylist
@@spectrum10 Great genes.
He got them asian genes
Ford was doing a great job.
cory south- He wasn't the worst president we ever had, that's for damn sure!
Pardoning Nixon sealed his fate for re election which Ford knew but he understood that the country needed to move on from watergate.
Today congress and the federal goverment are just off the rails!
I don’t know how Republican voters in 1968 chose Richard Nixon over Ronald Reagan, and in 1976 they chose Ford over Reagan, glad they chose him in 1980 & 1984.
In 1968, Richard Nixon had a pretty solid moderately conservative record and was viewed as the most mature candidate. He was able to unify the Republican Party, which was divided between the Liberal wing led by Nelson Rockefeller, and the Conservative wing led by Ronald Reagan. Nixon was chosen in 1968 simply because he appealed to the vast majority of Republican voters. No one in 1968 knew Watergate would happen. In 1968, Ronald Reagan only had one year of any sort of political experience compared to Nixon's 21 years and his candidacy was seen by some as happening too soon. Reagan had also signed very controversial bills into law in California in 1967 such as bills legalizing abortion and no fault divorce which hampered him with conservatives.
In 1976, Ford while not as popular with conservatives as Reagan was more popular nationally. Reagan, at the last minute, also lost the support of a good chunk of conservatives by selling out and saying Richard Schweiker, a Republican with a VERY Liberal record, would be his running mate. This caused Conservatives at the Convention to switch their votes to Ford, who had picked Bob Dole, who at the time was seen as basically akin to Reagan, just not as charismatic.
RyManda Ronald Reagan was first modern movement conservative president.
RyManda Richard Nixon was not conservative, only his rhetoric can be called, and He chose spiro Agnes to appeal conservative voters.Gerald Ford was a moderate conservative in fiscal issues.Richard Nixon was a centrist.
The Cawd Squad Richard Nixon was a centrist President. Ronald Reagan was first movement conservative President.
Reagan won the popular vote in 1968. In 1976, when Ford invited Reagan to speak at the convention, everyvone realized they picked the wrong guy.
He is so...handsome!!!
For his age. Yes.

Lol u could tell towards the end that regan was hinting that he would run for president a full 5 years before he even became president
well he did run for president the following year but lost to Ford in the primary.
@@maximchintalov8387 Ford was an incumbent president. He was therefore a serious challenger. When Reagan spoke at the 1976 Republican Convetion alongside Ford. Delegates and the audience felt they had taken the wrong candidate.
My, lord, I miss this president. Can you imagine Biden trying to answer questions like this?
Damn what a great man.
Reagan and Ford didn’t like each other
brianvi Vickers- Indeed they didn't, although that was mostly Jerry Ford's fault.
They had a good relationship. Ford was Reagan's first choice to be his vice president in 1980. Reagan made a speech for Ford at the 1976 Republican convention and Ford did the same in 1980. Ford and Reagan did commercials to help themselves, one and the other in '76 and '80. Ford gave the most beautiful speech of the president at the opening of the Reagan library in 1991 and Reagan gave a beautiful speech at the opening of the Ford library in 1981.
Really? I never heard of anybody of either party disliking Ford or Raegan?
Neither Carter nor Reagan nor Ford nor Mrs LBJ did a single thing to help Vietnam veterans.
Wow he a government of California THX REAGAN AND GOD BLESS YOU
Wow. Somebody answering questions
2:50 mistakes in Vietnam concluded that it began when the US Government closed down the Consulate in Hanoi in 1954. Overreacting to a invisible attack in 1964 later identified as Radar error. Also not considering placing troops at the neutral zone in Vietnam in 1973 and closing all bases down in South Vietnam. Other mistakes the US made was not placing troops in Laos as a buffer between the Pathet Lao zones and the Lao Kingdom zones. Lastly the mistake in Cambodia was instead of marching into Phnom Penh to remove Lon Nol. The US Government recognizes his regime making the world mad at the USA.
John Davis I'm Glad We Closed Down Our Consulate In North Vietnam, There Wasn't Any Neutral Zones During The Vietnam War 1964-1975 In Vietnam And Why Would Our Troops Be Stationed In The So Called Neutral Zone???? If They We're Still Going To Be Attacked By The North Vietnamese/Vietcong How Is Closing Down Our Military Bases In South Vietnam A Mistake???? I'm Glad We Closed Down Our Military Bases In South Vietnam Well We Didn't Close Them Dowm As You Know During The Conflict In Vietnam The Vietcong Would Seize All Our Military Bases And Occupy Them As They're Military HQ What Other Mistakes Have We Made In Indochina???? You Meathead!!!! I'm Glad We Didn't Place Troops In Laos But LBJ Secretly Bombed Laos In 1964 While We We're Sending Tens Of Thousands Of Our Troops To Vietnam And The Secret Bombings On Laos 🇱🇦 Went On From 1964-1973 Killing Tens Of Thousands Of Innocent Laotians And Nixon And Kissinger Only Escalated The Conflict To Cambodia 🇰🇭 In 1970 When U.S Troops Invaded Cambodia 🇰🇭 Nixon Secretly Started Campaign Bombs On Cambodia From 1969-1973 🇰🇭 The Same Thing LBJ Did In Laos 🇱🇦, Why Should Have We Sent Troops To The Capital Of Cambodia 🇰🇭 Phnom Penh You War Criminal To Remove An Ally Of The United States 🇺🇸????? From Power???? Lon Nol Was An Ally Of The United States 🇺🇸 And Of The West In General!!!!!! I'm Glad We Recognized His Government But That's Why We Shouldn't Have Bombed Cambodia In The First Place What Was Nixon And Kissinger Thinking When They Bombed Cambodia Being An Ally Of The United States 🇺🇸!!!!! And No!!!! We Didn't Make The World Mad When We Recognized Lon Nol Maybe We Made The Communist World Mad Probably Because They Wanted Us To Overthrow An Ally And Put The Khamer Rouge In Power Lead By Pol Pot But Not The Western World You Clown!!!!!!!!
John Davis We Killed Tens Of Thousands Of Innocent Cambodians In Cambodia 🇰🇭 During The Secret Bombings On Cambodia 🇰🇭 From 1969-1973 I Highly Doubt That Lon Nol Was A Dictator!!!!!!!!

Reagan didn't endorse or vote for Ford in 1976, neither did his wife.
This is not true, Reagan attended the 1976 Republican convention alongside Ford and made speeches on his behalf. And he also does campaigns commercial for Ford available on youtube.

Two things that Ronald Reagan out-right lied about: deficits and that dyed hair!
Even if it were white it would still be amazing hair for a man his age.

What an excuse making baby! A president of the party opposite of the one prevalent in Congress can't create laws or override bills?

The executive branch enforces laws, does not create them.
