+The Lego History Channel Reagan was the greatest cheerleader for the country to be sure in the second half of the twentieth century but Greatest President? No. Lincoln and FDR would fall first. Outside of Lincoln and FDR, Eisenhower, Teddy Roosevelt, and Reagan. The one thing they have in common is they rallied the people and saved the nation from ominous threats or in T. Roosevelt and Eisenhowers case represented the American spirit.
Expediency and lack of principle enabled Bush to drop his (well-founded) critique of Reagan's huge unfunded tax cuts once he joined the ticket. He seemed to remember them in 1990 when he agreed to tax increases to pay down the deficit, but by then the no-tax orthodoxy was so absolute in the Republican party it killed him.

And Reagan cut taxes, increased defense spending and GDP Growth went to a record 7%... the Economy boomed and Americans flourished.... Bush was elected after Reagan and his policies started the decline of the American working class...
Trickle-down economics never worked. It only made things worse. Reagan's tax cuts only succeeded in raising the debt from 26% of GDP to 41% and it kept going up after that until Clinton came into office.
***** No, trickle down economics doesnt work. It might create some benefit in the short term, but eventually it fails miserably. Economists understand this well by now. "Trickle down this. trickle-down that" the only place I see "Trickle down economics" is on the left. They support these big corporate cronies because they fuel their political machine through absurd donations and everyone else be damned if they call them out on it. Also, the term "trickle-down" is not even a scientific term, but rather, a political one used to discredit Reagan. It has failed in doing so, so drop the bullshit. Nobody is buying it.
can someone explain what reagan means when he says tax burden is at its highest percentage of gdp? my understanding is that tax burden means who shoulders the cost of a tax (ie, a tax on apples is shouldered by the farmer and the consumer).
I was a high school sophomore back then, too young to vote. Even though I wouldn’t vote for either of these guys, at least both of them represented a time when Americans were somewhat more civil in contrast to today. Back then debates were exactly what the definition of the word “debate” is. Now today we have a president who brings in an ex-president’s accusers to get in the head of his opponent and that same president threatening to put his opponent in jail if he wins. How far have we fallen today. The America of 1980 is nothing like the America of 2020 and we are all the worse off for it. Vladimir Putin is laughing at us.

And across the pond, Margret Thatcher was already in power and implementing the same ideas.
I loved it how Bush said "I don't want to put words in [Reagan's] mouth and want to give him a chance to explain his position." Wow. You never see that today in primaries and the general election.
Jimmy Carter has watched this video 39 times...
This is one of my favorite President and VP duos.
I Was Only Planning On Watching The First 10 Mins But The Debate Was So Good That I Watched The Whole Thing... Both Men Were Great But I Think That Reagan Won This One!!!
Reagan was VERY GOOD!
Ronald Reagan, a true conservative and the second best POTUS in our history, after President Washington.
+The Lego History Channel
Washington was just a figure head Lincoln was clearly the best president
Each to their own opinion ;)!

FDR was extremely overrated
FDR was overrated sry cyanghost109
hmmmmm, wonder why this got to my recommended 6 yrs after it was published on youtube...
Why aren't debates still run by The League of Women Voters? These debates seem to be much more relevant, and much more FAIR. Letting various networks run debates resulted in bias, bias, bias, crap!
Two good men, so glad they were our Presidents.
Betcha it took everyone in the room by surprise when Reagan named Bush as his VP later down the line.
arodgefan589 I think he had no choice. He had to unite the party to beat Carter.
@@bobsmith597 Exactly. I mean Bush kind of represented the moderates so not a bad guess. Sort of like how Bush picked Quayle to satisfy the conservative. Nominees usually pick running mates based on their perceived weaknesses
I would pick Reagan any day over this sneaky bush.
It is staggering to see how much these candidates were on top of the budget figures, and what could be done with the carefully accounted resources available. Today we have AOC and the green new deal.
They debated on proper things. Much better than 30 years later, it's almost as if they knew whoever lost the nomination would be the Vice President
coincidentally this debate took place the exact same day as the failed Iranian hostage rescue mission, april 24, 1980.
The two fellows in the audience who turn around on either side of the speaker at 0:04 are my father and uncle.
00:11:14 - the winning statement right there. And deservedly so.
Well pointed.
The debate about immigration at 47:00 is interesting. Looks like the Bushes right from the beginning were soft on illegal immigration.
So was Reagan
I was born on this very day!
happy birthday
Woooooow i was just 1 year & 10 months when this presidential forum took place and i was in Morocco.
American needs a president who has the guts to risk his political career to do the right thing, just like Reagan did
RIP two great presidents.
Reagan was a better speaker than a debater, but he was rather good at both.
I respect the statement, but history proves, Reagan smashes in debates. Not because he was good at it, but because he spoke as honest as he understood the situation
45:31, question about illegal immigration.
No telepromters!
Dude, who debates with teleprompters?
And Reagan cut taxes, increased defense spending and GDP Growth went to a record 7%... the Economy boomed and Americans flourished.... Bush was elected after Reagan and his policies started the decline of the American working class...
Trickle-down economics never worked. It only made things worse. Reagan's tax cuts only succeeded in raising the debt from 26% of GDP to 41% and it kept going up after that until Clinton came into office.
***** No, trickle down economics doesnt work. It might create some benefit in the short term, but eventually it fails miserably. Economists understand this well by now. All you have to do is look at what happened to the national debt when Reagan started implementing his policies, and the same for GW Bush.

William Ochocinski Clinton’s surpluses has some bad side effects
Interesting question asked to Ronald Reagan... 52:08
Regan won because he had a better hairline than George H.W. Bush
Funny how one became the vice president of another. Kind of like Biden and Harris if you remember..
Trickle down voodoo economics
There is no voodoo in supply side economics.
Its still used to this day
for real. We have a rite to free college, free healthcare, and higher taxes for millionaires.

Reagan 2020
1980 the year I was born.
Wow, what a time to be alive🙄🙄
can someone explain what reagan means when he says tax burden is at its highest percentage of gdp? my understanding is that tax burden means who shoulders the cost of a tax (ie, a tax on apples is shouldered by the farmer and the consumer).
Wow, this was a time when republicans were compassionate.
Unless you were gay or black.
@@davidcase2847Partisan baseless narrative nonsense
Bush has quite the temper. He's quite snippy with his answers like he's frustrated he has to be here rather than just solving problems
Trump's message on illegal immigrants is totally different from both of them😂
Really makes you wonder if any of these 2 would win if they campaigned with the exact same policies today, doesn't it?
Wow George W is *just* like his dad.
Senior seems far more intelligent.
They’re both scumbags
George Bush Sr at the 5 minute mark was 100% correct.
Conservative socially and fiscally.
Well this is a video when two real presidents talk about real issues love u mr bush sr and reagan from PHILIPPINES...
What if President Jimmy Carter debated George H W Bush on 10/28/1980 in Cleveland OH
He probably would have lost . Carter was a disaster.the fact he lost by much says as much . Note I didn’t attack Carters character just his presidency
was mr bush his VP ?
yes
Yes. Unfortunately.
@@JohnnyCage333 i agree. I think he undermined President Reagans agenda with his dealings with congress. Just as President Trump is undermined by establishment staffers he has employed.
Oh...My ancestor's brother's wife, Susannah Holmes, was the great grand daughter of one of our Founders in North America. Pretty sure I can prove that last statement.
Bush and Reagan finally be as friend after they both win the presidency 😘
Ronald Reagan was my childhood hero! He was a true American patriot. He really believed in American exceptionalism. That America’s system of government and our Constitution were above any other system ever tried. He saw evil in communism and socialism and helped that evil system into the ash heap of history. God bless you Mr. President job well done. Thank you for leading America back from the dark days and the whole nation prospered from what you did. Wish you were still with us!
