"I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit for political purposes my opponents youth and inexperience." When Ronnie said that, I looked at my girlfriend at the time, a Mondale supporter, and said, "SLAM DUNK! GAME OVER!" And IT WAS!
Rest in peace, Vice President Mondale. Thank you for your countless years of civil service, sir. I have an original campaign pin of his, 1984. He was an inspiration to us all!
Interesting history here. One item caught my ear at 1:22:50. Reagan asked if we wanted to see America return to the policies of weakness of the past 4 years. I think he had a momentary memory lapse and thought he was debating Carter in 1980.
Look at this debate versus the current debates of 2016... These people are far more civilized and are at least talking POINTS not stabbing at each other....
When Reagan said, "I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit for political purposes my opponents youth and inexperience," he WON the election right then and there. Mondale even admitted it. He started laughing, but in an interview a few years ago he admitted holding his down because he didn't want anyone to see him crying. He said he knew he lost then and there. I knew it, too, and said to my then girlfriend who was hoping for a Mondale win, "SLAM DUNK! GAME OVER!" Oh, how we could use another Reagan now!
+Bluponi No he doesn't, but from all the candidates I've seen in my lifetime since the end of the Reagan Revolution, Trump is the closest candidate who has shown the same optimism and patriotism that Reagan showed us back in the 80's. Now I was 15 years old when Reagan was Re-Elected for a second term, and personally he was the Greatest President in my lifetime. But the Republican Voters, including me, have now turned to a new page of the Grand Old Party, from Reagan to Trump. And now that I look at it, they aren't too different. Now I was very skeptical of Trump's Presidential Run back in June, and thought he was just pulling a publicity stunt. I know my Father thought the same way when Reagan was running in '76 and '80. But after some thought, I came to realize that from all the GOP candidates I saw on that stage during that first debate, Trump is the ONLY one who I could see in the Oval Office. Now of course no one can match the same Conservative rhetoric like Ronnie did, not Cruz, not Kasich, not Trump. But Trump definitely defines the continuation of the Reagan Revolution and strongly promotes Pro-AMERICAN Ideas and Policies. So like Reagan back in 1980, Trump can MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!
"What they will say about us, a hundred years from now, depends on how we keep...our rendezvous with destiny." One of The Gippers best lines ever. Ladies and gentlemen, Ronald Reagan: The Last Founding Father.
more than 30 years later and Mondale is still alive....still feeling the effects from the landslide loss to Reagan which is still historic. Imagine if Mondale upset Reagan by that same margin....things would've been different....
***** I do like Reagan when it came to taxation, but George H.W. Bush made some courageous choices in dealing with the deficits---he paid politically for it too
This debate kind of ties Reagan & Mondale. Both are strong, only Mondale seems stronger. But Reagan won nonetheless, by 525 electoral votes to Mondale's just 13 electoral votes.
+D Bear He didn't have much to go with since Reagan got the economy back on track. He had very little arguing points for why the American people should oust Reagan and replace him with the VP of what many viewed as a failed administration. Mondale's run was set up for failure from the get go, regardless of how well he did
It wasn't going to really matter who the Democrats nominated. Reagan was too strong of a candidate in 1984, regardless of how the public thought of his policies.
Twenty-eight years ago today! I was a student watching this with my then girlfriend who is now an ex-wife (I got smart and graduated). When RONNIE thwarted the "age" issue, I looked at her and said, "SLAM DUNK! GAME OVER!" She seriously thought Mondale was going to pull this off! It was NEVER close!
what a Great Shame that the Quality of People Nominated by the Primaries and National Conventions of the 2 Established Political Parties for Election to become US President has fallen so Dramatically within a Generation and the Standards of Public Debate have disappeared along with everything else that once made the United States of America a Great Country.
Good Day To all.Thank you to the great ReaganFoundation! President Ronald Reagan was the greatest U.S.President in U.S.History!We Love President Ronald Reagan from all of our Hearts! My Deep Respect to President Ronald Reagan.!Very sincerlly With Respect!
Even though I am a republican I must say that Mondale debated pretty well against Reagan. The challengers typically face more of un uphill fight and so I must give him credit even though I am glad Reagan won that election.
Before you thumb-down my post, I want to admit that I am a strong Reagan supporter and I'm not glorifying Mondale in any way. I say it objectively that this debate didn't go to well for Reagan. He spent most of the debate being attacked by Mondale and the journalists and was unable to refute several their fallacious claims. His closing statement exceeded the time limit and was ended prematurely mainly because of his long anecdote which could have been shortened.
@BamaChris dark circles or bags under eyes - mild swelling or puffiness under the eyes - are common as you age. With aging, the tissues around your eyes, including some of the muscles supporting your eyelids, weaken. Normal fat that helps support the eyes can then migrate forward into the lower eyelids, causing the lids to appear puffy. Fluid also may accumulate in the space below your eyes, adding to a swollen appearance. :-D think before you post please :-D
Walter Mondale: "Both President Reagan & myself have said we have a plan for raising taxes. The only difference is he won't tell you he will raise taxes, I just did". Not a statement to make if you want to win the American people over, Mr. Mondale! It is because of the content stated by Ronald Reagan in both debates the reason why he cleaned Mondale's clock in the general election two weeks after the final debate here! Mondale only won D.C. & his home state of Minnesota. R.I.P., Ronnie.
I cast my first vote in this election. I was a young Democrat and voted for Mondale. I'm a Conservative now, but bear no ill will toward an honest man like Mondale. I must say that he looks awful here (Those bags under his eyes!); probably operating on 3 hours sleep per night by this point, I'd speculate. I know Mondale needed medical attention for his sore arm(s) from all the handshaking.
33:00 mark was the best part! "I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent's youth and inexperience." I saw that with my girlfriend at the time (now former wife, happily I am remarried) who was hoping Mondale would win and told her after that remark, "SLAM DUNK! GAME OVER!" I WAS RIGHT!
And of course they omit the part of the debate where Mondale baited the old fart to use his hokey"there you go again" mantra and Ronnie sure as hell stepped right in it !
When Reagan attacked the age issue, I lloked at my girlfriend at the time (now former wife). She was 100% in MOndale's corner and convinced Mondale would win! After Reagan's age remark, I looked at her and said, "SLAM DUNK! GAME OVER!" And it was! Now we need to join the ROMNEY REVOLUTION and remind people NOBAMA has 1,232 DAYS TO GO!
I was six when he was elected (Reagan). Nixon was president when I was born, then Carter, Reagan, etc. Some of the decisions Reagan made will effect my great-grand children in the negative effect. Thanks for nothing Reagan. I'll take Clinton back, the best president of my life time.
I thought the nightmare of Reagan's years in the White House would never leave me. Then years later, we had Bush Jr...... he truly was the worst president we have ever had, and truly gave me real serious nightmares!
Reagan/Bush - 525 electoral votes - highest total ever received by a presidential candidate.
Mondale/Ferraro - 13 electoral votes
33:25 Classic Reagan!
Such a famous debate moment! May the two of them rest in peace and keep joking with each other up in heaven.
"I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit for political purposes my opponents youth and inexperience."
When Ronnie said that, I looked at my girlfriend at the time, a Mondale supporter, and said, "SLAM DUNK! GAME OVER!" And IT WAS!
Mondale would be excoriated today by his own party for being a right-wing fanatic.
I feel the same about Reagan as I do about Kennedy. Like him or not...dude had good pipes.
Rest in peace, Vice President Mondale. Thank you for your countless years of civil service, sir. I have an original campaign pin of his, 1984. He was an inspiration to us all!
The dumbest then would be the smartest now.
Interesting history here. One item caught my ear at 1:22:50. Reagan asked if we wanted to see America return to the policies of weakness of the past 4 years. I think he had a momentary memory lapse and thought he was debating Carter in 1980.
Mondale is so monotone. Reagan seems to be actually having a conversation with the audience. I think that's what made this debate so easy for him.
Look at this debate versus the current debates of 2016... These people are far more civilized and are at least talking POINTS not stabbing at each other....
It's obvious that Mondale knew he couldn't dethrone Reagan. He just had fun getting under his skin.
RIP President Reagan, you are missed dearly
Yes, you're right. All Americans thought so. Thats why Reagan won EVERY state except Minnesota and D.C.
Can't believe they cut Ronnie off in the middle of that end speech... The man truly had such an incredible way with words
I knew it, too, and said to my then girlfriend who was hoping for a Mondale win, "SLAM DUNK! GAME OVER!"
Oh, how we could use another Reagan now!
Obama is this gen's Reagan.
vccstudents Paranoid OBS won't be tolerated. Especially mindless, fact checked Right Wing Rhetoric.
BLOCKED.
I long for these days... I was 14 years old... Trump doesn't hold a candle to Reagan
+Bluponi No he doesn't, but from all the candidates I've seen in my lifetime since the end of the Reagan Revolution, Trump is the closest candidate who has shown the same optimism and patriotism that Reagan showed us back in the 80's. One of The Gippers best lines ever.
Ladies and gentlemen, Ronald Reagan: The Last Founding Father.
12:51. We could use this kind of leadership today.
Walter Mondale kind of looks like Lindsey Graham
more than 30 years later and Mondale is still alive....still feeling the effects from the landslide loss to Reagan which is still historic. Imagine if Mondale upset Reagan by that same margin....things would've been different....
***** I do like Reagan when it came to taxation, but George H.W. Bush made some courageous choices in dealing with the deficits---he paid politically for it too
Thank you! I was looking all over for this!
Ronald Reagan he was a great man.
Mondale passed away today at 93, R.I.P.
"I am not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience" Hahaha! Reagan God Bless You!!! You always gonna be THE BEST!
"I've heard the national debt blamed for a lot of things, but NOT for illegal immigration"
Ha ha great.
It was Cicero by the way
Why the hell is that guy laughing he lost like 49 to 1
Interestingly, the Democrat at the time talked about fighting Communism. Not so today......
This debate kind of ties Reagan & Mondale. Both are strong, only Mondale seems stronger. But Reagan won nonetheless, by 525 electoral votes to Mondale's just 13 electoral votes.
***** Agreed, though Mondale did better in D.C. than Reagan.
Even as someone who isn't Reagan's biggest fan, Mondale must have been crazy to think he had a chance in hell against Reagan.
Mondale looks tired.
i love reagan...
REAGAN!
Mondale put up a good fight
not really. and Washington was a conservative
+D Bear He didn't have much to go with since Reagan got the economy back on track. He had very little arguing points for why the American people should oust Reagan and replace him with the VP of what many viewed as a failed administration. The Democratic party has never been good at making good judgements.
It wasn't going to really matter who the Democrats nominated. Reagan was too strong of a candidate in 1984, regardless of how the public thought of his policies.
RIP Walter Mondale (1928-2021)
53:32-53:36--Mondale got OWNED!!!
Yuppers!
Great moment: from 21:08 to 21:40--LOOK AT 'EM GO, tearing Mondale APART on his foreign policy "experience".
Can't we have more democrats like this that call Che Guevara shameful? Our current democrat admires Castro and Che. It's disgusting.
what a Great Shame that the Quality of People Nominated by the Primaries and National Conventions of the 2 Established Political Parties for Election to become US President has fallen so Dramatically within a Generation and the Standards of Public Debate have disappeared along with everything else that once made the United States of America a Great Country.
not both parties, just the Republican Party.
I am not going to exploit my opponent's youth and inexperience. For future Presidents, watch Ronald Reagan. That's how its done
Ronald Reagan. A great, LIBERAL, Republican president.
Saddened to hear of the death of VP Walter Mondale.

There Mondale goes again!
Rest in Peace Vice President Mondale, You will be missed!
1:00:00 Mondale is worried about averting Judgement Day.
You can't prevent Judgement Day, only postpone it.
was Mondale? tough on defense What was his ideas?
There are not supposed to be Foreign Highs at Work inside the United States Jobs.
it seems many americans like regan as a president and an acotr

33.00 that immortal moment in American political history
Mondale looks half asleep during this debate. He was much more lively during the first one....
Rest in Peace, Vice President Walter F. Mondale.
As per Terminator?
Walter Mondale: "Both President Reagan & myself have said we have a plan for raising taxes. The only difference is he won't tell you he will raise taxes, I just did".
Not a statement to make if you want to win the American people over, Mr. Mondale! R.I.P. WALTER
From Ronald Wilson Reagan ...... to baraq hussein obama. How could this happen ???
I am not a huge fan of Reagan, but the Democratic Party was stupid to nominate Mondale and not Gary Hart.
We all know "looking the part" is important.
America should Begin in 1912 and work our way F.O.R.W.A.R.D. 2012- 2013 is also another Fkdd moment in time.. Just my opinion.
Call me crazy...... But the 3 spots in this debate "21 minutes, 33 minutes and 53 minutes" I look at a lot and laugh everytime!!!!
And as a Minnesotan, I can only cringe when I hear that.
20:50??? 33:30 is the best!!! hahaha
I like 53:05 also!!!!
You could tell during this debate that Mondale was scared of Reagan :)
LarryRickenbacker Hahaha Mondale had a more serious issue than age apparently
May I ask why did you change political views?
Reagan had the one-liners but aside from that Mondale won
Yeah--his whining about our "image" in the world sounds WAY too much like Obama....
GAME OVER!"
I WAS RIGHT!
54:00
Slenderman 2012. "He's got the suit"
What? There use to be two great super powers? Wow!
lol. Do you know what private equity companies do? Apparently not.
Dude, that's not a chick, that's a dude! Adam's apple right there at the beginning.
And of course they omit the part of the debate where Mondale baited the old fart to use his hokey"there you go again" mantra
and Ronnie sure as hell stepped right in it !
*cues tumbleweed
keep dreaming.
The audience is terrible.
@plasticfern ZOMBIE REAGAN SMASH!!!
MINNESOTA THROW IT DOWN
Lol good point :)
Mondale won this in my opinion
Zombie Reagan 2012!
Not only that, but Mondale should've been president.
I was six when he was elected (Reagan). Nixon was president when I was born, then Carter, Reagan, etc. Some of the decisions Reagan made will effect my great-grand children in the negative effect. Thanks for nothing Reagan. I'll take Clinton back, the best president of my life time.
