You might want to look into Paulownia trees aka the Princess tree or the Empress tree. They are the fastest growing hardwood in the world. After the first year you cut them near the ground then they grow back super fast. They grow like 12' a year! They are cold hardy, but you'll have to see if they will grow in you region.
They have really big deciduous leaves, we used the in AZ at Arcosanti to shade the garden. I learned about them there. They are nicknamed the million dollar tree because they are so fast growing and their timber is so good.
I'm planning to plant a bunch on my 40 acre permaculture homestead in Eastern WA. It will help give shade and be useful timber. My big thing is if they will be able to handle the extremes in weather here. It gets (in Fahrenheit) over 100 in the summer and -20 in the winter. So it needs to be able to handle that swing. It's tough to find things that can handle that.

The victorians used to train coppice wood for window frames too -- using wrought iron -- in the same way bonsai trees are trained, by wrapping the metal along the branches to shape them !

What is the advantage of growing the tree horizontally, besides providing a better cover for the surrounding plants?
