A Large cutting of a weeping willow (Salix alba tristis)next to the step part could bind the whole thing together , in 10 years you wont be able to reach around is , as a massive centerpiece with the roots in the water its maybe worth considering , i don't know how easy it would be for you to get your hand on one

That would look amazing, but I think I'd prefer to keep the space open. A big weeping willow is definitely on the cards somewhere on site though.
