SNES drunk walks in, grabs all the shop owner's stuff, throws down a smoke bomb, and as the smoke clears all that's left is a note that says "And have a great rest of your day"
Yeah.. this game here got complete got forgotten and stood in the more popular POKEMON mystery dungeon's shadow. I'm glad someone actually finally acknowledged this relic of a game.
It is always really nice when someone takes the time to put together a translation for a game that previously did not have one. There are many games that didn't make it out of Japan, and I feel like I can never give enough thanks to the people that have put together these translations over the years. Thanks for mentioning Shiren, SNES drunk.
This game taught me what a roguelike is, and now I have a bunch of them on steam. I really got into it a couple years ago and was able to beat the first main adventure. That storage room was a critical piece to my success, in combination with the blacksmith in that town who will merge weapons and shields for you.
I've always been a sucker for rouge like. I'm a big fan of the aforementioned Lufia 2 Ancient Cave, but have played the DS remake of Shiren The Wanderer which is brutal in it's difficulty. Mystery Dungeon is a subsection of the rogue like developed by Chunsoft, who licences out to companies like Nintendo for Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. If you play a number of Mystery Dungeon games specifically you develop strategies for survival that assist you in future titles. Incidentally one of my favorite rogue like's of all time is Azure Dreams for PS1. It's very similar to a Mystery Dungeon but it's Konami's take on the mystery dungeon format. The mission is to scale a tower connected to your hometown of Monsbaiya and help it grow by using funds from the tower to build shops, librarys and even a casino. You can also collect every monster in the game and level them up to help you get through the tower, and you WILL need them to get through the game. You also can have up to 7 girlfriends that you can seduce through story progression and item collection in the tower. There is also a Game Boy version that isn't a carbon copy of the PS1 version. If you're a fan of rouge likes and mystery dungeons check out Azure Dreams.
Cool to see people talking about Azure dreams, I got a PS1 copy recently, never played it before. It looks like it has a lot of similarities with mystery dungeon, great game so far, it's also quite tough, I keep having bad luck with random traps and hordes of enemies, the monster breeding mechanic is one of it's best aspects.
You can attack traps and disarm them, but it's very time consuming to do that in every room. I always hated the Rust Traps, but to counter them you can equip a Gold Sword because they don't rust. Same deal with the Shields. Ideally you want a Diamond Shield since it's base defense is 7 but you could use a Wood Shield in a pinch. The hard part in this game is keeping your monsters fed since you pretty much need a high level monster to get to the top unless your exceptional at running away.
Thanks for the advice, I've just been keeping a backup sword and sheild, I've noticed knowing when to run or escape to town is an important part of the game.
This really looks like my sort of game. I absolutely love the sprite work and animations, and the play style sounds like a lot of fun. Thank you for showcasing it!
They made a sequel for the N64, and they didn't translated it even though the system was starving for RPGs. It's probably really good because it got great scores.
way more than 4, there are 7 shiren the wanderer games counting the two GB titles, not counting the torneko and pokemon spin offs, the mystery dungeon series has a ton of games. The proper Shiren games are 5, last one is on ps vita and is a blast
Still have to best it. At a point where like floor 25 you can't go back. Trying to get a return item jar so I don't have to lose my multiple upgraded sword.
@@BADC0FFEE there are actually 9, or even more depending on what you're counting. The 5 main Shirens, then the 2 Gameboy games, then the mobile game and the second N64 game(Asuka Arrives!). There's also a mobile game and 2 spin-offs(a soccer game and a Mahjong one)
It's worth mentioning that there is a Shiren the Wandered game for the PS Vita as well. So if you have a Vita and would like to try Shiren (albeit a newer iteration in the series) you can pick that one up too.
I'm an English Shiren fan, so I don't know how it compares to the games we got overseas. How good is Asuka Kenzan? Is in the best in the series as some say?
@@james441 I've only played the Shiren series and my personal pick would be Shiren 1 on the DS. It's my first mystery dungeon and I like a lot of the changes made to the game. Some prefer the SNES original and I can see why, but DS is streamlined and has extra dungeons.
Does anyone have any good recommendations for a good guide for this one? I'm trying to figure out how to unlock the extra content beyond the main 30 levels, but can't figure out how to trigger anything like the 100 floor dungeon mentioned in this video...
The 5th game in this series was recently ported to Switch and Steam. It's called Shiren the Wanderer: Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate. It's super good and I beat it four days after getting it (to my surprise). There are also efforts to translate a number of the other games. There is a community working on the N64 version and I saw someone also working on the 4th game in the series. Too bad it's so underrated here in the West.
A lot has happened since I posted this comment. Shiren 2 (on N64) has been translated, the spinoff game, Asuka the Wanderer for the Sega Saturn received a partial introduction for the first major beat of the story, Shiren DS (a DS remake of Shiren GB2) was also recently translated, and Shiren 4 (DS and PSP) has a translation that is currently complete, but unreleased due to bugs that they's trying to work out. After Shiren 4 releases, this will mean that every Shiren game (with the exception of GB1 and some spinoffs) is playable in English.
One of the first S-Fami games I ever imported. I think ive played through every iteration of the Shiren titles with the exception of the N64 one. Orcs & Elves on the DS is a fun first person take on the Mystery Dungeon/rogue-like genre. Sorcery Saga on the Vita has also been a personal favorite of mine.
This game reminds me of Azure Dreams for Playstation. It's a lot of the same of this game. Except you go through a 90 floor monster tower.Within the tower you face randomly generated floors & unique monsters. The key thing is that you can also find monster eggs! Through these eggs you gain faithful monster companions. You can actually FUSE the monsters together to gain better stats on your monsters & different attacks. It's a great game but it's one of the hardest games I've ever played.
I say give both a shot. :D Azure Dreams though was one of my most favorite games growing up. Also unlike this game, you can leave through using a wind crystal. If you do so you can KEEP ALL the items you found in the tower. Though you can only carry 10 items with you when you enter again.
Tony C Expect to have to learn a lot of controls and mechanics in Azure dreams. There's a huge town hub with tons of things to do, and some heavy resource management, all good thing for that kind of game imo, just takes a bit of patience. Just finding out where to save took some figuring out. I don't have the manual, that would probably help a ton.
I've ended up preferring the DS remake/port for one thing no need to patch as it got an official US release and also it has some noticeable quality of life improvements. Downside you can't run two saves to rescue yourself with it unless you use a flash cart with Multisave support as the DS version only allows one save per cart.
Ay, the SFC version of Shiren the wanderer is tough as nail. Amazing game, but I don't think I'll ever crack this nut... Being a point A to Z rogue-like, the ever changing layout is a constant conundrum on this. Am I going to need this scroll? Shall I spare it for a stronger monster? Am I going to be able to level up early enough to face more perilous predicaments? Shall I store this blade away and take it for another run? Shall I travel with a companion? It's practical but if a monster takes him/her out, it's the end of me, no doubt about it. Losing top tier inventory and starting back from square one is always heart wrenching. STW is the rogue-like embodiment of "make do or bust".
Watching this makes me want to play Torneko no Daibouken, again, but my dog ate the power cable for my Retron 5... (And the SD card with my save file and the translation patch seems to have disappeared.)
I remember playing the wii incarnation to this. I hit a block in that game and never finished it. Though there is azure dreams on ps1 and gb. Or they have a game by namco release on ps2 called nightmare of druaga. The switch has yokai encounters on the digital store
This reminds me of a somewhat unpolished version of one of the most underrated games on the PS1, Azure Dreams. That game kicks @$$! Seriously, check out Azure Dreams if you can get your hands on that rare game.

I'm a big fan of this game! I've beaten both the SFC version and the DS remake. They changed some stuff in the remake and I don't think one version is clearly better than the other. The one on DS is a little easier, for what it's worth, but still nasty hard. The one on Wii isn't that good, but the one for Vita that got a US release is also worth checking out!

The only english patched game I could find was "shiren the wanderer 2" on snes, is that just this game but titled incorrectly or something? I wouldn't call these games action RPGs. Yeah, the battles don't have a menu like FF or DQ, but they're definitely turn-based. A lot of roguelikes do that, particularly the classic originators of the franchise like, well, Rogue, or Nethack. It's just that every action takes a turn/time unit, and all other creatures on the floor also act when you do. But you can totally pause so you can think about what to do before you take another action.
i like rouge games but with the dificulty lowered likr evolution for dreamcast out the pokemon mystery dungeon our lufia gba. have a great rest of your day.
That's the point. They're meant to be hard so that there's a ton of replayability. Otherwise if you can just beat it within a few hours it'd be a waste of money. You can spend years playing spelunky and still get better at it and do new things in it, use different strategies etc
Not sure if you've done it before but I think a funny April fools video would be to just have your intro play for the amount of time an episode usually takes.
Is this actually an "action RPG"? Because from the looks of every battle in that video, you just walk up to an enemy and exchange hits until one of you dies. Are you not able to move around during battles or swing more than once before the enemy attacks? If not, I wouldn't call this an action RPG. It's just a turn-based one that doesn't bother cutting to another screen for battles.

Most roguelikes of the 16-bit era were made for computers and in the west.
This game is basically an evolution of Tononeko no Daibouken, right? But surely that wasn't the first rougelike? Did they originate on PCs maybe?
He never once insinuated this was the first roguelike. He never claims this game was the first of anything.
Torneko no Daibōken: Fushigi no Dungeon isn't the first rouge like, but it was the first Mystery Dungeon game, which is a variation of the rogue like that isn't generally as punishing as an old fashioned rouge like. Graphics beautiful except his head is holding a giant cookie
Timestamp? I must have missed the bit where he called it action
IGNorant hates roguelikes!
that would be *ahem* WE english speakers
*snorts, pushes up glasses*
Spike Chunsoft: making the same game for thirty years.
i like rouge games but with the dificulty lowered likr evolution for dreamcast out the pokemon mystery dungeon our lufia gba.
have a great rest of your day.
I feel like the sprites on the snes are the definitive graphics for video games.
I like roguelikes! Spelunky is too hard though.
That's the point. They're meant to be hard so that there's a ton of replayability. Otherwise if you can just beat it within a few hours it'd be a waste of money. You can spend years playing spelunky and still get better at it and do new things in it, use different strategies etc
Looks like a good'n!
Looks amazing...hate rogue likes.
This game is great, shame that the series has stayed in Japan for the most part.
Not sure if you've done it before but I think a funny April fools video would be to just have your intro play for the amount of time an episode usually takes.
I don't usually like to nitpick, but aren't these games more turn-based than action rpg? Everything you do counts as a "turn".
it's a roguelike, definitely not an action rpg
0xBADCOFFEE that's what I'm saying. Roguelike RPGs are closer to turn-based than action.
Correct. Every action is considered a "turn", even taking a step.
Helvetica Scenario don't forget waiting! Haha
Waiting is super vital to not dying
Is this actually an "action RPG"? Because from the looks of every battle in that video, you just walk up to an enemy and exchange hits until one of you dies. Are you not able to move around during battles or swing more than once before the enemy attacks? If not, I wouldn't call this an action RPG. It's just a turn-based one that doesn't bother cutting to another screen for battles.
