you cant judge the shiren series just by watching. there's so much stuff happening that is not shown, you need to experiencethe games to understand how awesome the gameplay is.
I was like, yeah ill do the tutorial... five pages later, "how do I do this again?????" lmao this game has caught my attention like no other in a long time. I'm glad I dished out the 20$ because I was super against rogue lites/likes but wow this game is on another level.
I missed out on a copy of this game for 4 dollars at eb games since I had no clue what it was......Dummy move. Got a used copy but it had some sticky crap in the label. Ruined the labl. Pissed me off. Got a sealed copy for 20 CAD then I was like man I don't want to open it so I picked up another loose copy for 14 dollars CAD. Still just got to the mountain with the lady that blinds ya.
The Nintendo DS remake of this is a personal 10 favorite for me and is something I return to endlessly. The refinements and extra content that version adds as well as the ability to just close the DS at anytime to go into sleep mode really complements the brutal random nature of Shiren. The mystery dungeon games are at their best in my mind when they are unforgiving and the first shiren as well as the new Vita release from a year back are the very best because of that. Etrian Mystery Dungeon, the Chocobo games, and the Torneko releases are fun for the fan service but the mystery dungeon mechanics just work so much better in Shiren in my opinion. Glad you enjoyed the game!
I would definitely like to see more Hidden Gem videos like this. I'm always looking for new games to try out, and you do a really great job of getting people interested in lesser-known games like this that they might not have heard of before.
You witnessed a Ghost Musha possessing another Ghost Musha! That's insane lol I love Shiren because of these moments. The DS and PS Vita ones I played the heck out of them. Finished them and some extra dungeons too. Seeing the credits is the most satisfying feeling ever. Thank you for highlighting this game!
Anytime you see a video pop up by RetrospectiveGaming you know it's going to be a passionate and true video. Always love the videos you are the purest form of youtuber. (P.S. - I've been playing Half Life 1 and all expansions/mods over Thanksgiving. I try to be overly critical of old games, but many still hold up really well. )
Half-Life 1 is still in my neverending to-play list. Believe it or not, I got back into gaming after trying Daikatana out of curiosity (known as one of the worst games of all time). After I beat Daikatana, I played Sin (this shooter looks silly but it plays awesome, trust me) and Deus Ex. In the same month, I have played the "worst" and best game of all time. Had a blast with both. After that, System Shock 2. I think I enjoyed it more than Deus Ex, but being a game that constantly makes you stressed out it doesn't have as much replay value as Deus Ex. Tried to play Unreal but could not get too much into it, still have to finish it. Delta Force 1 too, so much fun, well-designed missions, I'm slowly finishing it. All these games from the same era 1997-2000. There's only much time in the day left, too much stuff.
I stumbled upon this game on am emulator site. So came to YT to see what it was about. Stoked to find this channel. Liked and subbed. Love to find channels that introduce you to forgotten games that are great. Cheers
Thanks! .. I was looking up console rougelikes after playing Tales of Majeyal and stumbled across this game ... I do hope future shiren games get official releases in the west
I just got into the switch release of shiren 5 and man….it is kicking my ass. The new one…6? Is releasing and while I won’t play it anytime soon I’ll be buying a physical copy to support this underrated series. This snes version looks beautiful, the graphics for a snes game are really great!
Nice video! Always cool to see people finding shiren, its a quite well made game. I've always found that the storage system is one of the more interesting aspects of the game - it allows you to prepare beforehand by stockpiling the best items you obtain over multiple runs, letting you break out all of the most useful stuff when you feel you're ready for that game ending run. Its also worth pointing out that there was an official English localized version of this game put out on the DS many years later. As far as I know its the same game, just with more content added in after you beat the main story.
The mechanics of this game and many hidden japanese gems from that era are often so far ahead of its time that they are impressively playable to this day
I found this game at Gamers Anonymous, mistaking it was the Pokemon MD. This is amazing. Plz don't forget to check out the gem I cherish: "Solatorobo, Red the Hunter".
The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate was also an excellent shiren the wanderer game. DS shiren is really tough. Try etrian mystery dungeon. Spike chunsoft is a wonderful company and they make very nice mystery dungeon games. :)
I played the ds remake of shiren the wanderer & I gotta say you feel a great sense of accomplishment after beating the boss at the "golden" city & freeing the golden condor, not so much when you walk down the tainted path as a lv1 with the gear that helped you beat the main games story only to get 1 shot then loose it all 🤣
Definitely playing this soon. For me, permadeath isn't necessary to make a game a roguelike, only randomized maps and turn-based movement. I'm relatively new to the genre, played the original Rogue last month and was thoroughly impressed with a game from 1983. Picked up Angband for more depth and been playing my first character, with save-scumming of course, because I'm not interested in investing such time in a character that just dies, leaving me to repeat all the mindless steps of the start all over again. No, I'm reloading that game, and fuck me if that's considered cheating. The problem with Angband is that it becomes more frustrating than fun, for example you sacrifice an inventory slot for using a Ring of Resist Fire, but when fire enemies appear, your items are still being all burned up regardless. Pointless. Limited items I can get, but items being burned or broken out of nowhere in a single fight, without the possibility to avoid it (at least playing a warrior character) bothers me. The game is so appealing that I can't stop it even then. Maybe playing a Paladin next time for an easier time with the spells.
Playing the DS remake. On 8F, I spawned in a massive Monster House which also contained the stairs. Needless to say, I didn't make it. Edit: This just happened, so if you want, you can rescue me at: CR8GQ CRW4 B84XR SNL3T 63M2 !CQK! B07M2 FF8S 8NHQW QP4CQ 1!CJ GN600
Only in japan on the super famicom, but there is an english translation patch. It's also available on the Nintendo DS in english without a patch, and that's a really great way to play it.
I recommend you checking out a rogue like game called Caves of Qud. It's on early access but I think it's gonna be really good. I'd be grateful if you'd review it!
I do plan on making a video about some PC rougelikes I've been playing on and off (Tales Of Maj'Eyal , Dungeons of Dredmore, Infra Arcana etc) whenever i make that video .. I will mention Caves of Qud for sure!
I'll give the game a try but i'm hoping your recording was off because it seems like the framerate sucks in the game and that's gonna bug me playing it
Don't play like that guy with his savestates. Roguelikes aren't like unforgiving platform games that have annoying parts you just want to pass somehow. Here, part of the game is to die. Don't fight against it, don't try to cheat death. It's part of the game to die and try again. Your real progress is on storing good stuff, unlocking new stuff and advancing quests. Only like that you are really progressing in the game.
Well, looks decent. But I don't see the combat system getting you anywhere. For Me, this kills the entire game. No story in the world, can make Me play something without being backed up by the gameplay. sorry
I understand.. Rougelike games are usually minimal story and more about the its type of gameplay ... It niche for sure but I like the genre btw you might like this ..its coming out soon ruclips.net/video/SgAEAbBpbVM/видео.html
Personally, I could live with the "no story" part. And I'm also a fan of these types of games. What nice memories I have of the games like lufia 2 and Mario RPG Legend OfTSS. But it's ultimatelly the rng part that kills it for me. I'm ok with it to some degree, but this just seems too much. Oh, Retro... If you're reading this, I just want to thank you for your work! You're really awesome! : )

Shiren is so damn good. It deserves so much love.

I gotta say, thanks for this video, I didn't know I needed a game like this one :D
the way you explain things makes me laugh! good review, love the anger towards the possession ghosts

I bought this back in 2008 and have had it ever since. My original ds no longer works but fortunately it also works for my 3ds
The mechanics of this game and many hidden japanese gems from that era are often so far ahead of its time that they are impressively playable to this day
Amazing video. Coming to Switch next month.
Azure dreams on the ps1 and gameboy expanded on this formula with town building, dating, and monster taming.
No way! That's insane...and to think that one has played a lot of games and never ran into these gems 😢
I was a big fan of the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games; might like this too
Wow... this game looks cool.
Here from reddit! Nice find!
I've never played Shiren, but my personal guilty pleasure series are the Mystery Dungeon games which are developed by the same people IIRC.
I plan on playing more Mystery Dungeon ones ... Torneko: The Last Hope is on PS1 that is gonna be my next one
Oh, I actually started in the middle of the video so I didn't even see you address all the different series at the beginning of it.
I found this game at Gamers Anonymous, mistaking it was the Pokemon MD. This is amazing. Plz don't forget to check out the gem I cherish: "Solatorobo, Red the Hunter".
I think the DS version was the first game I ever bought myself. Loved it to death. Incredibly hard though. I think I still have my copy somewhere
Same Shiren DS was my first game as well. I was surprised at how hard was it.
Great hidden gem video che, I might have to see if I can find a reproduction cart with the English translation
Shiren the Wanderer 5 is coming to steam!
You seem to be a good gamer, I thank you. I will subscribe.
Is the snes version for the US translation a rom? I want to buy the game, I just don't know what I'm supposed to buy.
Awesome video!
Great video! Long live Shiren!
The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate was also an excellent shiren the wanderer game. DS shiren is really tough. Try etrian mystery dungeon. Spike chunsoft is a wonderful company and they make very nice mystery dungeon games. :)
was this shiren the wanderer 2? I can't find the first one with an english patch anywhere, so I'm just double checking
I played the ds remake of shiren the wanderer & I gotta say you feel a great sense of accomplishment after beating the boss at the "golden" city & freeing the golden condor, not so much when you walk down the tainted path as a lv1 with the gear that helped you beat the main games story only to get 1 shot then loose it all 🤣
Ok swag Shiren vid bro?

They made a new one for the vita. Looks good, but rogue likes bore me after a little while.
actually, thats the fifth game and its actually a port of a DS game
This game was hard as fuck lol i never beat it when i was a kid.
Fuurai no Shiren

Will do .. I want to cover more games from that generation
two words: front mission.
Is this game really for the SNES? I can't find anything about the cartridge or ROM but it seems fantastic!
Only in japan on the super famicom, but there is an english translation patch. It's also available on the Nintendo DS in english without a patch, and that's a really great way to play it.
Mystery Dungeon games are a great time killer try out the choccobo versions
Beautiful!! :' )
Yes indeed :)
Great game...

That's just the normal delay between turns. The game is turn based and every tile you move you take a turn. That comes with a jittery feel of course.
Great video
buy the one for vita, it's worth every penny
You should play Earthbound.
You're right
youd like cladun or legasista psn ps3 game
👏👏
:)

Seems like a wannabe SNESdrunk just saying.
