WALKS IN DORSET at MILTON ABBAS (inc MILTON ABBEY CHURCH) [4K]

  • This is another video in my series “ Walks in Dorset” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode, I visit the village of Milton Abbas (located about 6 miles South West of Blandford Forum) and explore the surrounding area.
I park my car, for free, by the church in the main street that goes through the village and set off on my 3.5 mile circular route (with a small detour)- from the top of the street.
The village is set in a pretty wooded valley & it is linear in form with whitewashed cob & thatch cottages either side of a single road - it really is a delight for photographers (if they can avoid the parked cars & not film on “bin” days!).
The village has a fascinating history - which I explain in the video - but basically it was “moved” from a previous site not too far away to it's present location in the late 18th century. My walk down the street gives me the opportunity of viewing these pretty cottages as well as the church, almshouses & vicarage.
At the end of the street, I take a detour & head North West along a public footpath to check out the Milton Abbey church - basically all that remains of an abbey that was destroyed in the Dissolution of monasteries. The buildings there are now a public school.
Whilst I believe that there used to be a permissive path from the abbey church, through the school grounds & back on to the road, I am not sure if it still exists ….. so I retraced my steps back along the footpath and rejoined my original route.
I then take a track that goes to the Steeptonbill Farm shop & follow a footpath to my next destination - the Chapel of St Catherine. This delightful chapel, built in 1190, sits on top of a hill looking down on to the abbey church below.
My walk then continues through some glorious woodland and I follow tracks to the lodge at the Northern edge of the estate & then along a bridleway at the edge of fields full of wheat. From there I get to enjoy some stunning views over the Dorset countryside before heading back in to the village.
I finish off this truly wonderful walk with some light refreshment at The Hambro Arms in the main street.

Very pretty village and great walk and history lesson. Thank you. At least it is lovely and peaceful in the village. Look what happened to Nuneham Courtenay in Oxfordshire when the Earl decided to move the village. It is now on a very busy main road. Probably fairly quiet when there were just clippetty clops going through! 😊🐴🐴

Hi Dave, Walked your Milton Abbas walk today - lovely - thanks. Worth mentioning if you want to go into St Catherine’s Chapel you have to pick up a key from the farm shop and pay a fiver deposit. Best to know before walking up the hill to the chapel. Great walk, lovely day.

    Hi Dave
    Another great video
When we do that walk and we reach the Abbey, we just walk to the right which takes you to the bottom of the steps to the Chapel, and carry on and walk out main entrance. No one has ever stopped us. Then you turn right and walk along road which takes you under a angled bridge which is actually carrying the steps up to the the Chapel!
    All the best

Thanks. Yes, I thought there used to be a sort of permissive path as you describe (it showed in an old walking guide book that I was using) but there was some sort of event going on when I was filming (lots of folk about etc) and a "new looking" footpath sign indicating that there was no public access - which was a nuisance as it would have made for an easier circular walk! Hopefully it was a temporary thing and that it is accessible again.
