MY brother lived 3 houses away from Fou and one day as I was about to ring the bell I heard Fou playing the Schubert B flat first mvt, and he made a small mistake on the second subject. He did not stop but at the next cadence, in time, musically and perfectly, replayed that phrase. He did this three times and then went ahead.
Every single word about Chopin is exactly what I feel and think. Thank God for this great genius that was passionate about another unique genius. Never had the pleasure to hear him in a live performance.Thanks forever, Maestro! 🌹🌹🌹❤

I love this man’s mind, and love his playing, even if he said he was “shallow” in his understanding. If that’s “shallow,” then I’m all in. 100%! I love the “Allegro Films” documentary about Ashkenazy and Barenboim playing the Mozart Concerto for 2 Pianos with the English Chamber Orchestra from the ‘60s. They take Fou Ts’ong out for dinner, and Barenboim of course monopolizes the table with a ridiculous music joke, but I just loved how happy these competing pianists were in each other’s company, how glad they were to be together....it did my heart good! It’s here on RUclips.
While claiming, along with most critics, that he played an 'authentic' Chopin, Arthur Rubinstein admitted more than a century ago to the soprano Emmy Destinn that he did not play in the manner of the composer. Rubinstein, with his German training and innate brio, played a more masculine Chopin than the composer could or chose to do (although Chopin admired the force of both Liszt and his own pupil Gutmann, at least in certain pieces). Similarly, the 'authentic' Chopinist before Arthur Rubinstein, Vladimir de Pachmann, was more influenced by romanticism than by Chopin's classicism. The point is that Chopin himself, playing on a Pleyel in a salon or at George Sand's Nohant home, cannot be recaptured. And even if he could, he cannot be confined to a historically informed performance. He is too great for that. So when some critics accuse Fou Ts'ong of playing with too much rubato, or too fast -- or in some other respect, not 'idiomatically' -- they diminish Chopin, not Fou. When I hear him, I imagine that this is the way Robert Schumann might have played Chopin (before Schumann injured his hand). Schumann, after all, is the composer and friend who, depicting Chopin in his Carnaval, asked performers to play that lyrical episode ‘agitato' -- an instruction now more honored in the breach than the observance. Fou is by turns an agitated, brooding, ecstatic player. I sense that he loves Chopin to distraction. As the interview shows, he insists on his own notion of textual fidelity. But his playing transcends scholarship and achieves artistry. A great musician and a great soul.
Early critics characterized Ashkenazy’s playing of Chopin’s works as being “too Slavic” after he began playing his pieces in recitals, and this tended to annoy Ashkenazy. He said something like, ‘[PARAPHRASE!] if you play Chopin’s music, you have no choice but to play Chopin. If you play Beethoven or Mozart, it’s all on the page, you have to play it to the best of your ability, what is written. I can’t play it Slavic, what does that mean?? If they mean something slips in that I’m not aware of, they’re crazy!””"

It was high summer and all the windows were open and the T'Songs had a piano visible on every level of their Islington mansion.
