Yeah, sounded like Mary had a lot of life left in her. I always thought she was almost dead anyway and James just finished the job, almost like a mercy kill. What a striking revelation!
Maybe the scream was a fabricated memory from Silent Hill to torment James and make him believe that he made her suffer even in her last moments... because I don't think James would actually killed her like that...

So you will be left with this feeling of desperation for answers at the same time depressed about what had happened, I think they did the right move though I did wish they had two separate versions. I don't usually like it when something good is replace with something else good, I'd rather have them both coexist.
I could make out that he was killimg her in the tape, I think that only hearing te increasingly louder buzzing of the tv made it far more disturbing than with the screams
Sometimes silence is the most terrifying sound. The uncensored version was better artistically because it leaves you guessing what was happening. It is clear that the was killing her(unless you are blind) you dont need any sounds. It was a great decission to take out the screams.
I think I've never seen anyone talk about this, but: Mary began coughing when she was in Silent Hill. That means she got sick while she was in Silent Hill on their first visit there. When you first meet Maria, close to her is a monument that reads: "In memory of the sixty seven who died of illness and now sleep at the bottom of the lake". Silent Hill had a nasty plague in it's past. For some unknown but malicious reason, I believe the town infected Mary, leading up to James' torment throughout the game. Its as if the town enjoys tormenting people.
@@TheJerbro69 The thing is, I don't believe it to be a contagious sickness, in the sense that, the plague no longer exists, but the Town is corrupted by the memory of the plague, giving Mary symptoms and progressive effects of it without giving her an actual, contagious virus. The same way the monsters can harm and kill James, but Laura doesn't even see any monsters.
Due to the subjective framing of the entire game, Silent Hill may or may not have actually had a plague. It could have been reacting to James and presenting him with those monuments to prompt his guilty memory, since he had previously associated her sickness to their vacation by himself. The idea of the town being more malicious like that is interesting though.
I get why they cut the sound. Mary sounds like she’s far more healthy than she’s supposed to be. The point of James killing out of mercy and selfishness doesn’t have that balance with Mary screaming bloody murder. Leaving it silent let’s the player use their imagination. When I watch without the audio I think of the sound of medical machines and Mary wheezing and breathing heavily. As James kills Mary she lets out a shriek that slowly fades into a whimper before there’s only silence and the low tone of the machines stating the obvious. She’s gone. Big difference right?

You thought the HD port was bad, let's get the most below average developers "Bloober Team" to remake Silent Hill 2 if the rumors are true.
One of the most horrific ways to go, and by the hands of someone who was supposed to care for you. Even if James just wanted to put her out of her misery, he’s still disgusting.
1:06 Jesus that scream was horrifying to hear. Imagine if that scream was left in the final game. A bunch of players including myself would’ve not only find it hard to forgive James, but would also hate him.
I'm glad they didn't put Mary's screams in the original release. That depicts James in a whole other light that I don't think was the original intention. When you listen to Guy Cihi describe James and Mary's relationship, you get the sense that it wasn't strictly murder; that there was mercy behind it. From the way Mary described her condition and the doctor's words, I got the sense that she was little more than a corpse on life support. All the energy she had when they first came to Silent Hill was long gone, and James tried to preserve that memory of her by putting an end to all the pain and decay. As he said, he couldn't bear to watch her suffer. But at the same time, he did it because he hated how she became a parasite, dragging him down and forcing him to suffer with her. The woman he loved had become shrewd and bitter, taking out all her frustrations on a man who could never do enough as her disease got worse. Cihi said there was a duality to James, that he was both the quiet, loyal husband and the selfish, corrupt individual who sought to save himself from the commitment to his wife. Listening to Mary's screams makes it seem like it was purely for a selfish reason instead of the duality behind James Sunderland. He never came across as the kind of man who could sit through his wife's struggle to stay alive. I'm not saying there wasn't a struggle, but not one so brutal. What he did was horrific either way. However, the original release makes James come across as less of a cold-blooded murderer and more a conflicted man seeking redemption.
I don't really get that feeling that it paints him as a cold hearted murderer with the audio. It looks like you can see him kiss her forehead beforehand, which helps a little. But also I think if you've heard the whole story you can still somewhat sympathize with him. Its an ugly scene either way and other people and myself had a hard time understanding what happened in the tape before James flat out said he killed her because of the sensorship. Just my opinion though.

Both of them couldn't let go because they loved each other and they wanted to go on but due to the circumstances it was impossible for this to happen and their relationship was getting worse and worse and neither of them could take it but neither of them wanted to let go of this mary wanted him to move on(as she told him with the letter) but she was also scared of him not being with her and wanted him by her side as for james suffocating her and still listening to it seems to have stuck with him and silent hill tormented him with this it actually makes it even worse because he did it and the scream is still in his mind. As I said the whole situation is not that simple.
They released Mary form the hospital for few days so she wasn't a corpse on life support and that's probably when James killed her, at home not in the hospital. In the video you can see James picked her up from the bed after. He might have put her in the trunk of his car and drove to the Silent Hill where the game starts. When I played the game I got "In Water" ending. James guilt was so painful for him that he committed suicide when he finally remembered what he did. So the uncensored version seems quite real.
Hell yeah the original harsh truth. It's a cruel moment that makes the act of killing Mary that much more horrifying and actually enhances the plot imo. Better than trying to make James seem more pitiable than horrible.

There was a tape in silent hill 2 where James is shouting at doctors taking care of Mary. Something like "Its your job to save people!" Or smth. Where the song "true" plays.
What a shame that they cut it off (at least from PC Version) + blurred totally. That would be the best jaw-dropping dark plot twist ever (it actually is, but if Team Silent would decide to keep original audio + unblurred video, it could underline even stronger the dark tone of the plot).
I'm most likely just remembering the first time I watched the video with the audio still in it, but i thought for the longest time that the audio was still in the game. Me and friend used to play through Silent Hill 1, 2, and 3 yearly, and I clearly remember the uncensored version being in the game. It's funny how memory works, I guess.
-> Censored version : Mary agreed on James' decision on mercy killing her. -> Uncensored version : Mary had her spark of life ignited and she didn't want to die by James' hand just yet. I think the two are completely different route 🤔🤔🤔
James' actions are unforgiving, He let her wife suffer because she was sick and cant breathe very well but james made it worse so that's why he's questioning himself that marry really did die 3 years ago.. man silent hill 2 has one of the most shocking twist that ive ever played. Newer games dont do like this anymore.
Mary got sick 3 years prior to the events of the game and it was until last week in universe that James kill her. Besides, you are saying that like if she got badly the moment they left Silent Hill instead of being a progressive thing like Cancer to put an example. James did everything he could, emotional and financially,to help Mary until he snapped.
That…really wasn’t that hard to get through at all tbh, I’ve heard way worse. For a game that managed to be so disturbing for me, this is actually pretty tame in comparison to the rest of the game in my opinion. However, this definitely makes Mary’s death feel more like outright murder than euthanasia, it gives more validity to James’s reasoning that he hated her and killed her out of frustration
I wonder if the guys working on the Enhanced Edition can restore this in the game. I feel like the uncensored version really grounds the reveal further in reality which will contrast well with the surreal nature up until that point. It adds weight and shock to what he did. I hope they do restore it or at least give the option for those who want to have this version of the scene ingame.
I downloaded this video, edited it and converted it to the proper format for Silent Hill 2 Enhanced Edition. Just put the file and replace it in the folder: Silent Hill 2 Directors Cut\sh2e\movie. I would love to see Silent Hill 2 get the remake treatment just like RE2 got. Bring the graphics into the modern day with the ps5 would be beautiful and the haptic feedback on the PS5 controller would all just be amazing.
Can you imagine if Silent Hill 1,2, and 3 got the same treatment as Resident Evil 1,2, and 3. Amazing remakes and such, but Konami just fucking sucks and doesn't care about their IPs
Careful what you ask for. Late comment though. What if I told you that Bloober Team is supposively gonna do the SIlent Hill 2 remake would you still want it even when Bloober does a half-assed job handling touchy subject matter for their psuedo wannabe SH games?
I would like if they put this on remake... But I doubt... And even if they did, the "fans" would probably cry "Oh, its not in the original"... As much as I love SH2, But James is guilty as hell for what he did
I believe that the way she screams might be another creation of Silent hill to make James feel even more guilty, making him believe that he made her suffer her even in her last moments... and that's not neccesarily how it happened in real life... just a theory, because I don't really think James would want to make Mary suffer like that...
Never knew of this version until now lol. Just an amazing game! With rumors of a remake, I would still prefer to see the first game remade. Silent Hill 2 is prefect the way it is. No remake is needed. 🤷🏻♂️
i feel like if they were to keep it in theyd need to make the audio of her screaming a little more quiet and muffle it for a more realistic portrayal from this mock up its a bit to crisp and clean and needs to be more blended into the audio more seamlessly.
This lays any speculation on Mary wanting to die and essentially allowing James to kill her to rest. She's screaming and trying to fight back. James is a murderer, not a mercy killer
A big shame the audio was censored. Made it near impossible to know what was going on. If left in would've made it understandable, but also would've been much more emotionally impacting.
This game has no other like, is a beautiful piece of art. Ever, scary but if you think about it, is not only a game, is live a deep novel or amazing movie directed by Master mind like Stanley Kubrick
I kinda wish they kept it in (maybe put some filters over it so it doesnt sound so cartoony tho). It kinda seals the deal when it comes to Mary's state. She was terminally ill, yes, but she was still able to speak and communicate relatively normal. She could have spent her last days on earth talking with her husband, saying how much he loved him and him saying it back to her, but James took that away from her.
@@plaq. Mary started to be unstable after her disease, and so James did starting to drink. She was always angry to James for him not visit her during her last days of life making her a trouble for him and a pain to see her in that state, that's why he killed her. He then removed from his mind the murder and Silent Hill "called" him back for punish him.
Everything is right, but even on SH wikipedia they mention, that he killed her out of his frustration - not because she was in pain. Also in one of ending (with the maria I think) he mentions it.

I'll never understand why they censored the audio in this scene. It's a psychological horror game. It's supposed to be horrifying and upsetting. You already showed Pyramidhead raping the monsters and implied Angela's story, why would you censor this??
That has been denied many times. Pyramid Head didn't rape anyone, he was just physically abusing the monsters. And possibly they censored the audio because that would cause the game's rating to change
@@Danny-zd6xn Ahh yeah, I forgot CERO is touchy when it comes to violence. Wouldn't have bumped the needle in the US but I could definitely see it getting screwed over in Japan and probably Germany and Australia since they have similarly pussified ratings boards. But uh good news if Bloober Team was cool with blasting The Medium players with two minutes of unskippable rape audio then their -bastardization- remake of SH2 will likely be uncensored in this way!
It’s still not super clear the way James did it. I hope in the remake they keep the static, but make the audio and visuals a bit clearer, as I assume the remake will be set in the 2000s era, so no more vhs
It was left in the HD collection version because Konami used an older source code build instead of final version because Konami last the final source code of the game.
Just replayed the whole game and this scene is a bit confusing and underwhelming because of the lack of detail to what he did. A workaround to the gratuitous nature of the screams could’ve been to play Mary’s screams for 1-2 seconds before cutting the audio off and scrambling the tape at that point to drive the horrid nature of what he did home. James isn’t suffering in hell because he shoplifted. He murdered his wife and that fact could’ve been delivered with more clarity without him having to narrate it.
Yeah like others have stated she sounds way to lucid/healthy. Audio aside however u can see James was also force to lay on top of her to finish the job, which means she was really struggling. James should've overdose her with sleeping pills or something instead, which of course aint right either. He really did took the worst approach like a total mentally unstable/broken individual would imo.
Yikes, that was even quite disturbing, but what was James doing to kill her? Is he trying to suffocate her to death? Even if the tape is more clear now, I can't really make out what he did.

James " *HOLD HER TIGHTER SHE'S A FIGHTER* " Sunderland
From what I've read, the main reason for removing the screams was to keep the scene ambiguous.
I find it better that way.
The ratings might change too.
Amazing work as always.
If they left the screams on the original versions of the game that would’ve made the tape 100 times more scarier
Funny how the comments are pretty much split in half over whether that should’ve been left in or not.
I’m 100% in the “should’ve been kept in” camp!
It would be cool, but also freaking disturbing
I downloaded this video, edited it and converted it to the proper format for Silent Hill 2 Enhanced Edition.
Just put the file and replace it in the folder: Silent Hill 2 Directors Cut\sh2e\movie.
If the creator of this restored video doesn't want me to share their video with the community so they can enjoy it in-game, please let me know and I'll remove this comment.
Here is my own link to download it:

Maybe they can add an option for it? But I don't think forcing it in the game would go along with their vision of remastering the game
just replace the bik file lol its not that hard
those screams make it impossible to continue feeling empathy for James, you wish he had a worse fate
RIP sweet Mary
It a way this shows that everything horrible that happened to James in silent hill 2 was deserved. Silent hill was his "hell", punishment for this act
He didnt deserve anything you deserve punishment for saying that man who want to ease his pain need punishment because you like it he was selfish as he should . Idiot who dont understand psychological pain is equal to physical.
Imagine hearing her calling for you after seeing this.
The scene itself isn't so hard to get through i think, but what happens in game after seeing it would have been much more intense.
But i also can see why they did cut it, game works well also without it
Why why why can’t we have gotten this for the remakes! Why cant we have good things 😭
If it ever happens, then I hope they don’t change stuff too much stuff to make it easier, like making the perspective third person like resident evil
Careful what you ask for. Late comment though. What if I told you that Bloober Team is supposively gonna do the SIlent Hill 2 remake would you still want it even when Bloober does a half-assed job handling touchy subject matter for their psuedo wannabe SH games?
@@Nightmarewrath you sir are a genius
Were you the one who provided the videos for these cutscenes in the Sh2 extended edition? God bless you!
We need a remake of Silent Hill
you get shattered memories lol, Konami doesn't give a shit they killed team silent
Well...
Oh I'm aware. Konami used to be so great
@@zombieby7884 there is going to be a remake of silent hill 2 so
good news!
“I was just fluffing her pillow I swear!”
Bruh i don't remember this full scene from silent hill, holy shit.
Holy fuck cockles, I always thought James got Mary sleeping so she wouldn't really suffer... but nope, she was aware the whole time.
Still the best video game story
I managed to watch but I couldn't stop a tear from falling
i was waaaaaaay too young to play this back in the day.
I think removing the screams was the right call
Makes you feel horrible for the fact that you played as James
Question, can you scream while being smothered?
Great work. Do you think you'll ever give Silent Hill: Fukuro the ESRGAN treatment?
How terrifyingly gruesome. James you bastard.
Sato's work preserved ❤
The uncensored version is terrifying
Never knew of this version until now lol. Just an amazing game! With rumors of a remake, I would still prefer to see the first game remade. Silent Hill 2 is prefect the way it is. No remake is needed. 🤷🏻♂️
Shut up
i feel like if they were to keep it in theyd need to make the audio of her screaming a little more quiet and muffle it for a more realistic portrayal from this mock up its a bit to crisp and clean and needs to be more blended into the audio more seamlessly.
Bro, this is neat
This lays any speculation on Mary wanting to die and essentially allowing James to kill her to rest. She's screaming and trying to fight back. James is a murderer, not a mercy killer
Por fin hallé esta versión y quedé D:
I think it's better this was cut out, doesn't seem to fit the tone the devs were going for with James specifically.
I cant unhear this now fudge, shouldn't have listened to this jaja cus there is no way that could ever count as a mercy kill mayor ooooooof.
those screams are so disturbing
A big shame the audio was censored.
Made it near impossible to know what was going on. If left in would've made it understandable, but also would've been much more emotionally impacting.
This game has no other like, is a beautiful piece of art. Ever, scary but if you think about it, is not only a game, is live a deep novel or amazing movie directed by Master mind like Stanley Kubrick
Mr. Self Destruct indeed. 😬
The game would be rated to ao but they kept the audio into the sh2 file anyway
Did he use a pillow?
Yes... he did he killed the woman he loved sad 😔 now he must pay.
If there’s eunathasia at that time, James wouldn’t feel guilty for all his ilfetime
Why did he do this? Was it, because he didn’t want her to suffer?
Yep
@@Devilot91 no it wasn't lol
@@plaq. yeah he did for both reasons, which is the main core of the plot and maybe could still be a spoiler for those 3 people who yet didn't play this masterpiece.
knowing that there is a remake coming soon, I’m just hoping they allow this
they didn't.....
@@grmw7 they did, wdym?
@@d4ntemustd13 the screams weren't there
@@grmw7 it looked good without the screams honestly
@@d4ntemustd13 it's a murder scene it's supposed to be horrific and scary not good... but i still love it
Anyone else notice James kissed her on the forehead. Interesting detail.
I dont't know much about the silent hill games but why couldn't he just leave her behind if didn't want to take care of her? Why couldn't he just abandon her?
Damn i didn't know she struggled so much...
this is the truth original tape
IDK what that boi was doin
Wonder if bloober team will leave the screams in….
It was left in the HD collection version because Konami used an older source code build instead of final version because Konami last the final source code of the game.
@@-wack 🤨 it wasn’t when I played it. It’s in the files not the game itself.
If they do, they might have a "talk" with the esrb.
i like that they had the common sense to cut it from the game, this wouldve been exploitative
She sounds silly I feel like they could have made it more chilling, like she’s fighting for her life. Maybe some grunting and weeping from James.
at 1:02 why does her arm move?
That was disturbing, woo wee
The remake is gonna tone this scene down even more I bet
Goddammit james
I thought james is going to crush his armpit to mary's face 😂
I know it's been 5 months but James smothered her to death with a pillow.
@@dopiestthyme3365 oof, thanks
I think that the screams dont have the same impact that death empty.
what the fuck?! how could james do this!? I can't believe it I'm shaking and shitting my self
he prefer kill her to wait her illness killing, he doesnt wanted to see his wife dead slowly
Is it scene from Director's Cut versión?
Nope
Dope
It looked like he kissed her forehead before...
The screaming totally invalidates a mercy kill.
Do one of the opening song for silent hill 3
