I would add the .hack series to this list. A pseudo MMORPG with proceduraly generated dungeons where you get to keep your progress and import your save file across 4 games. Each game came with a DVD to watch an anime that took place in the real world while you play in the MMO world.
@@Gluemn Vaan and Panelo remind me of the device of having the story told through the lowliest characters, like the 2 peasants in The Hidden Fortress or the droids in Star Wars: A New Hope. (In fact, it was the peasants from Hidden Fortress who inspired R2-D2 and C-3PO.)
@@Gluemn I lost interest in 15 about halfway through and quit playing. With that said, 15’s Cid is the best Cid in the series and is worth playing for him alone.
Thanks for the list, but come on, splinter cell in a PS2 list of games that were ahead of their time when the ps2 version was a poor man's copy of the real game on xbox...
The biggest jump in gaming had to be Super Mario 64, that completely changed the gaming landscape. But it wasn't until the latter half of the PS2's life when that change really started to get perfected and became truly innovative. It's too bad game developers got so concerned with "safe" games with predictable profits.
The thing people praise FFXI for is NOT that it brought MMOs to consoles...it was the fact it was THE first cross platform MMO ever made, which it is indeed. PSO was only on console. UO and EQ was only on PC...FFXI was on both PC AND console. Add to that FFXI ran a heck of a lot better with its connection and such than PSO ever did.
Final Fantasy XII was the last Final Fantasy to really have substance and depth. Everything since then has been ok. I feel Square Enix has completely abandoned this level of innovation and craft in favor of more profitable "wannabe Disney" pursuits
The ps3 is my favorite system being that i still revisit my ps2 and ps1 backlog on it. It's ashame my bc 80gb died. But a super slim with hen is more than capable, everything else i have my steam deck to run it on. Not to mention the ps3 has all those hd remasters of ps2 games.
I feel Resident Evil 4 deserves to be on here for predicting the popularity of a lot of 3rd person action shooter games, and Devil May Cry for basically kicking off the entire character action game genre, but Otherwise a good list!
it's always been very important to me there is so much noise all the time online these days that there has to be some places where there's respite from it
Afaik Suikoden 2 for the ps1 did "upgrading the town" earlier than Dark Cloud did, except that it was a castle. Also, Legend of Mana for the PS1 even did the plopping of areas on the world map earlier than DC did. But don't get me wrong, i'm not saying DC or DC2 aren't good games. So instead of Dark Cloud, i'm curious if you guys have played the game "Gun" for the PS2. It's a game that was ported/remastered for the PSP under the title "Gun: Survivor" btw. i bring this up because from what i read online, it has set the trend on how some modern day open-world shooters(like RDR) are like nowadays. But, i haven't played either Dark Cloud or Gun, just wondering if maybe Gun deserves to be on the list instead. Anyway, good vid. Thanks for recommending some games.
XII should've been the future of the series, such a shame as it was, indeed, ahead of its time. I've looked and looked for anything remotely similar to scratch that itch and found nothing.
it was mentioned within God Hand, the point of the video is not to just highlight all of the biggest ones that changed game design but also some of the smaller, less successful ones too
I find your political views on politicians being required to wield katanas dangerous and insensitive. Obviously im joking, but with how worked up people get over politics i feel like i have to disclose that im joking
It is what I wanted, and nothing else…. Well, except maybe a promise of Rescue Mission coming to PSVR2. Love the game though, and watching this video makes me so glad we love it as much as we do. (We being me and my 2 daughters!)
02:40 REALLY DISLIKE THIS FALSE TAKE ON KOJIMA. People please, the taught proking ideas you see in Kojimas games are not his own. Since Kojima is a very educated person that actually reads books he incorporates ideas from other people/author into his games. That you as a player discover them on a Kojima game doesnt make it an original idea. So whats the big deal? Basically that people who believes this PROPHET KOJIMA nonsense, are giving ZERO credit to the minds that actually came up with these things.
obviously I am talking about Metal Gear Solid 2's prescience in the context of *video games* in a video about *video games* do you remember any of the same themes in Herdy Gerdy?
@@CulturedVultures Thats the point. These ideas didnt originate in the videogame medium. And these games are not giving gamers the clues or tools to know were they actually came from. And thats problematic to some extent. The comment intent wasnt to personally attack you but give a bit of perspective, maybe someone that read the message would start diging up a bit more about the themes in these games.
When games were created and played simply the love of gaming. We're just starting to find our way back... Addendum- MGS2 was terrible. The only thing it deserves is to remember how close it came to destroying the series. MGS3 was king.
MGS2 was covering ground that was considered conspiracy theories for decades. The fact people think the predicting anything shows just how much people don't play attention or read, ironically proving the point of the game how people can be manipulated by factions vying for power. And it was talking about propaganda, "fake news" simply stands for when someone is calling out a news organization for pushing it.

Final Fantasy XII remains my favorite FF game, hugely underrated.
I see you’re 15 and raise you 10!!!
dude, thank you so much! appreciate you!

Glad to see Final Fantasy XII get some love. It's my personal favorite thanks to the gambit system. I would love more games like that.
Same here!
I loved the gambit system and put so much time into it. I found the story a total bore though, even with great characters like Balthier.

Late ps2 was the absolute peak of gaming
Drop some more games that were ahead of their time in the comments and they could be featured in PS2 Games WAY Ahead of Their Time 2: Sons of Liberty!
Everything Kojima. He even predicted covid lockdowns with Death Stranding
I wrote a lengthy explanation in another comment here, but the .hack series of games!
Dark Cloud mentioned!!! Absolutely adore this game. It's such a shame it's not more popular!
I love MK: DECEPTION. It's a nostalgic game for me. I wish I could run like Shujinko does in this game but in real life. It'd be fun.
Imagine a Mortal Kombat Armageddon REMAKE with modern visuals. Onaga would look amazing.
I love this topic endlessly, and it really points you in some interesting directions for games worth a second look.

@@Gluemn oh yes.
You killed me with the way you said "got him".

Still hoping God Hand gets ported to Nintendo Switch and other modern platforms.
Odin Sphere would fit here. It's circular maps are unique as is the gameplay.
IGN should've gone out of business when they reviewed #3.

MSG2 was a bait and switch. Only play snake for 1 level. The plot didn't have much of anything. But the gameplay was solid.
