I did some research and it appears polish invested vodka in 1405 and the russians invented their vodka in 1430. The history of both is really cool

I am Polish and some time ago I dated a Russian guy. Once we met in the pub. He was waiting for me and drinking something in a glass. It looked like water. I asked him why was he drinking only water? He replied, "It's not water". He was basically drinking vodka in a glass. Just like water. I was stunned.

I'll tell you a better story. I worked on the construction of roads in Poland (I'm Polish). The rule was always the same, a new employee had to buy vodka and drink it with employees who worked longer hours. I bought 700 ml of pure vodka, drank maybe 40 ml from the bottle and gave the bottle to an excavator operator named Piotrek, he drank it all in one sip as if he was drinking water after a marathon. . The rest of the employees who worked longer told me that you shouldn't give Piotrek the whole bottle, because he will only drink as much as you give him :). After living in Poland for over 36 years, I was surprised for the first time.

    I am Russian.
Russian Standart is not actually the vodka I would choose: it is overpriced and not really good. We prefer local producers to mass products.
One of the best vodkas is "Chistye Rosy" (Чистые Росы). It is much tastier than Russian Standart. Even the cheeper type of vodka from the same plant which Chistye Rosy is from is better than Russian Standart: "Derevyen'ka" for instance (Деревенька).
Moreover Poland and Russia have different traditions of making and consuming vodka. 38% - is chosen mostly for chemical reasons (the configuration of water and alcohol molecules due to weak hydrogen connections), but due to the evaporation of the spirits during the process of bottling the level is increased to 40%. Moreover during the distillation process the 40% is really easy to measure: you simply burn the spirits in a glass and it should reduce in half by volume (it happens at alcohol content around 40%). Such distillate is called "Polugar" (Полугар) (or half burned). Money is also a reason, but far not the main.

One of the main differences is that most Polish vodka is made from rye. Potatoes would probably be the second most popular base material. In Russia, the vast majority of vodka is made from wheat. Occasionally wheat and rye will be used together, but wheat alone is definitely predominant.

Correct. It GENERALLY should be chilled, but not freezing cold. The point however is that you take a bottle of vodka out for a longer drinking session and if it's taken out of a freezer, it will start passing through the right temperature range in like 15 or 20 minutes (depending on the room temperature where you're at), and it will stay within that range for a while before it gets too warm again. But if it's only chilled to begin with, you'd have to keep it in an ice bucket. So it's just convenience. But yes, straight out of freezer is not the optimal temperature.

@@vza2772 But still, it was a crudely made spirit out of wine freezing, uses in medical purposes, or something of similar composition, far from what today vodka is. Name checks, but composition doesn't. The same story was with the Russian ones, and with spirits from other neighboring states. It wasn't really the drink, we'd call vodka nowadays.
The word vodka (wódka) is of Polish origin tho (the date 1404 you've mentioned), appearing later in parallel with Gorzałka (approx. 1528) back in those days, due to its bitter taste. Gorzałka, name of that "drink", and wódka/s reserved for medical distillates in broader sense; later the distinction faded and meant the same thing.
Our modern vodka was not produced until the XIX century thanks to the, then, new distillation apparatus, etc.
Basically, this just shows, that the invention of vodka is a really broad and grey area, spanning centuries and across regions, between cultures (they're even Italian monks or Arabic traders playing a big part here) so it's very difficult to pinpoint the invention of this drink to one country. Poland was undoubtedly, historically, one of the biggest players here, but other cultures and nations have had their part in it's invention and improvement as well, and so they deserve some credit too. That's what I think at least.

The original vodka comes from Poland, Poland was the first to produce it. As always, the Russians only copied, and it was the same with the atom

Wyborowa isn't 100% polish. It's produced in Poland but not owned by Poles. 100% polish vodka and much better if we talk about tastes are brands like Dębowa Polska, Paderewski, Biały Bocian, Chopin, Żytnia and Krakus.
