You mentioning speed and then slow songs having melody.
Megadeth has a ton of melody, even more so than Metallica does.
It's the small nuances and melody beneath the "visible part" of the songs that make the songs so great.
About the drumming. Lars can't even tune Gar Samuelson's kit, let alone play it or try to play like him. He was just a one of a kind drummer.

I do like the slow part in "The Four Horseman and the solo Kirk played in that section. We all know Mustaine wrote the main riff and is a pioneer behind the some sick soloing using the amazing hammer and pull-off stretches. Dave Mustaine was shredding way back then. A Metal icon indeed.

For me it's the Four Horsemen all day, but IMHO it's not a real fair comparison simply due to the fact that one is much faster and shorter and thrashier than the other (even though they are basically the same general songs). I think it just depends on your preference. Dave's version definitely has more of that punk/thrash vibe going whereas Metallica's version is a much more refined masterpiece, let alone much longer and has more solos. It's sort of like comparing a Mercedes to a Dodge IMHO.

okay but you left out that Dave Mustaine had no family, and he saw Metallica as his BROTHERS... "brothers" who didn't even have the NERVE to say, "Hey man, you are gonna need to get some help with the drinking or we can't keep you in the band" and offer him some support/help. just woke him up one morning, kicked him out and sent him packing. no explanation. also, "Brothers'', who when Cliff Burton died, did not even have the DECENCY, (as Cliff passed not long after Dave got kicked out) ... to CALL HIM, even out of respect of the relationship they all had at one point and SHARE with him the bad news, while THEY had each other for support. No, Dave found out from a 'music Journalist' that one of the guys he saw as a *Brother* was just violently killed, and not one member of Metallica ever even contacted him. NOW, do you see why it led to such a dark, bitter, angry place for Dave Mustaine??? oh, and just so you know... it was DAVE, who first came to a place in his life and reached out to Lars to tell him that he FORGAVE HIM for everything.

    • @WolfKain
      @WolfKain 6 лет назад +9

Yea I said they did him dirty, but revenge is toxic and eats away your spirit. Thanks for adding the family part because even though they were only together for a couple of years, at that age it would seem like a long time. Dave would have benefited from a better support system but Lars and James had too many issues of their own.

Not really fair considering that Dave was not allowed to use a lot of material due to legal conditions. Mecanix was a weaker song...still love it though. Most of the lead guitar riffs were Dave's on the first Metallica albums. Rhythm was written by James. I only like the 80s Metallica albums, straight thrash. Kirk is still one of the greatest guitarists around and was the first to contact Dave to heal the rift between the two bands.

Gonna be real here. Megadeth any day of the week. Dave Mustaine is just a badass. He had every song he wrote stole by Metallica, kicked out of his only "family" 2600 miles from home when they were just about to make it big. He had to get a bus home with no food, money or water. Then he had to spend about 6 years making band meanwhile watching his from friends become the biggest band in the world. I think most people would kill themselves years before he started megadeth

These two songs were precisely what prompted me to create a playlist which I called "MegaMetalldetHicA" - which you can probably guess is a hybrid of the two bands' names mashed together, and the playlist featured songs by the bands in alternating sequence.
The alternating/random caps are to reflect the logo (which I also mashed together), retaining the capital M and H book-ending the Megadeth logo, and the "lightning bolted" M & A of Metallica.
I opened my "mix tape" with Mechanix, followed by The Four Horsemen, and the rest of the mix just went randomly from there in a Megadeth/Metallica sequence of songs.
I could not even begin to guess how I arranged them, save for some special editing of specific songs that were cross-mixed with other songs...
If you're interested, I uploaded a sample of how I mixed tracks which were already previously crossover'ed with other songs on their original albums - for example, how Into The Lungs Of Hell fades out as the soft jazz intro fades in for Set The World Afire (Megadeth), or how Fight Fire With Fire is abruptly ended by the commencement of Ride The Lightning (Metallica). Back in the 80s, long before PCs and editing software, I had to to do some fancy editing to separate songs that crossed over one another in that manner, or that had abrupt endings. But the mix you'll hear in my video upload is the "cleaner" and more professionally-precise effort with the benefit of proper editing software (and years of experience, much of it gained by trial & error, lol).
The one thing I did not include in the modern mix is the repeated explosions at the beginning of Set The World Afire, lol. Perhaps one day I'll remix it to include that effect?
All this, all because of these two specific songs (Mechanix and The Four Horsemen).
    :-P
So, for your listening pleasure, I present :
    MegaMetalldetHicA :

I have a couple comments to make, first of all it was like a 24 hour bus ride they sent Dave on after kicking him out of the band, it was from NYC to LA on a Greyhound bus, to add an additional insult to it they then call up Kirk Hammett of Exodus at the time and flew him out to join the band, so Kirk was probably in New York before Dave even got back to LA, second I agree with Wolf about Metallica's early albums, for one the band as a whole had a level of cohesion in it that, due to Dave Mustaine's control freak attitude, Megadeth didn't really attain until their album Rust In Peace, not that Megadeth's earlier albums weren't great, they just didn't have the cohesiveness of the early Metallica albums, probably due to the the personnel changes and addiction issues within Megadeth and competent was probably the best word you could have used to describe Lars' ability on drums. I would really like to see SIstah react to some Tool songs, I would recommend starting from the beginning with them and take her through the evolution of the bands sound, say a track or two off each record starting from the Opiate EP, and by the time you make it to the end hopefully the new album will have been released by the with you guys mixing in other bands in between, I would recommend the tracks Part of Me and Jerk Off (live) off of Opiate and go from there

Quick info about the first song they played that was published was on an album of local metal bands put together by a guy I think was Brian Slagel called "Metal Massacre". The song had another guitarist Grant Loyyd given credit as well. The fist song was "Hit The Lights". Metallica is by far my favorite band but I must comment on Dave Mustaine. I respect the dude so much. Great song writer but also probably the most intelligent and articulate person in music.

The best thing to ever happen was Metallica kicking Dave out because that action gave us on great metal band in Metallica and THE BEST THRASH BAND EVER in MEGADETH..... the one thing about Dave is that his writing along with Cliff is basically what put Metallica on the map after Dave left and Cliff died (R.I.P. Cliff)Metallica went to more Radio friendly style while Megadeth always stayed pure to their Thrash roots with the exception of RISK.

Never heard maiden doing a triplet gallop, ever. Not once in their entire catalogue. Set in 4 would look like this -- l.lll.lll.lll.ll vs llll..llll..llll..llll.. -- Set in 3. Two completely different rhythms.

I enjoy the fact that your approach is different from other music reaction channels; others just seem to be "play song" youtuber goes "ooh, that was good....well, see ya next time!" I love that yall give background information and analyze the songs and your reactions. Wolfkain taking the role of Metal Historian works out well in this format.
Having said that, in this video he mentioned that he felt that Metallica lost the "the song is a journey" attribute in their later works. I would like to see yall react to All Nightmare Long (from Death Magnetic), Halo on Fire, Murder One, Dream No More, or Spit Out the Bone (from Hardwired to Self-Destruct). IMO, those are their strongest offerings from their past 2 albums. Halo on Fire is my favorite of those examples and really give that "this is where the song wanted me to be" feeling by the end of it.

No offense to megadeth but i don't think it reaches out to that kind of epicness That Metallica or Zeppelin had.
Both John McIver and Lonn Friend named Metallica as the led zeppelin of this/our generation. And i just gotta say DIXIT. Because is as simple as that.
They were both Vanguardists. And all of the bands of their time were expecring their next move...and when they all thought they got them by the balls just then is when they MOVE ONTO ANOTHER THING and you found yourself with your hands empty. Plus they were both killer bands on stage. Only by looking MSG 73 or paris 68 or Seattle 89 you'll see my point.
Which concert OF THAT MAGNITUDE have Megadeth? None.

Dave can also be quoted from the vh1 special about metallica as they were the one band who did everything right. Love both bands however I have to say Metallicas first 5 albumns i can listen to every song from beginning to end on each one all the way up to the black album.

Dave got write credit on only 4 songs and it was Kirk on the album cover, not Dave. They recorded it a month after kicking Dave out and felt it didn't make sense to have someone on the cover that wasn't in the band anymore.
