Just for clarification, Kirk Hammett had very few writing credits in most of Metallica's discography. James Hetfield does 95% of Metallica's writing so he would be a much more fair comparison to Dave Mustaine than Hammett. Hammett's main contributions to Metallica are his solo's and a few riffs sprinkled here and there (middle riff from Creeping Death and middle riff from Four Horsemen as an example).

Megadeth are the GOATS of thrash metal basically because of the guitar work of Dave and whoever played with him. The best being the Marty Friedman years and Rust In Peace is in my opinion the best thrash metal album of all time.

I first listen to Metallica and most of their albums but that's when I first started listening to metal but after discovering Megadeth and having over 100 songs of Megadeth from 5+ albums in a playlist I can definitely say Dave just immediately became my favorite guitarist ever to grace my ears.

Okay so I have been into metal for years now since the age of 16 and now I am damn near 50. I have been a fan of Metallica every since I heard Cliff Burton on that bass solo years ago before he died. However my view point on Metallica since then has changed especially with that Nabster B.S. years ago. I remember coming home from school one day and turning on the t.v. and a soap was on and I was hearing Metallica's Enter Sandman so I turned the t.v. off. The music stopped so then I found out that Metallica's song was on the damn soap, that's where I knew Metallica really sold out to the massive. Megadeth on the other had has never came near of selling out and Dave Mustang is just the pure shit (pardon my French lol). Now the story as I know it (the battle you are talking about) steams from an issue with James and Dave. From what I remember James had a puppy and Dave didn't like the dog and they some argument that lead Dave leaving the band. Some do say that it was a spot light issue and how Dave wanted the spot light but since James was there it was all on him. Not to say these stories are but they are what I heard years ago. Now if you really want to compare Metallica to Megadeath listen to The Four Horsemen vs Mechanix and the reason is because both songs uses same riffs and beats. I guess that's because Dave owned the rights to the music he helped create. But I conclude Metallica is my choice when they were young Metallica but Megadeth has never came down to the massive. A couple of things. 1) Dave was kicked out of the band because he was extremely violent and just a complete ass when he was wasted. He was bringing them down. That's why he was kicked out. 2) Metallica grew substantially after Dave left. Proof he was holding them back. 3) I understand why you and other metal heads think Metallica 'sold out', but there's actually more proof to suggest they were just doing what they wanted to do, which is the opposite of selling out. Just because their music took more a more mainstream route doesn't mean they were doing it for that purpose. It could have simply been their own desire to change as musicians. They proved that with 'Fade to Black' , 'Sanitarium', 'Ktulu', 'Orion', 'One'...that they weren't going to be told what to write, even if it pissed off many of their fans.
I like both bands but musicianship-wise, Hetfield is hard to beat. His bottomless well of creativity behind such a variety of riffs, from hard rock to thrash, hasn't been matched yet. I'm not convinced Mustaine would be able to make tunes like Sad but true, Unforgiven trilogy, My friend of misery, Eye of the beholder, Orion, Sanitarium, Fixxer, Outlaw torn, Bleeding me etc. That's not to put Dave down but that's where James has the edge
@Sebastian X Let's put it this way...almost everyone acknowledges that the individual talent of Megadeth, as technicians is better. Their drummer better than Lars at PLAYING...Friedman was better than Kirk in solos, and Dave's riffs are a little more complex than James'. However, that alone doesn't make a better song. So, with more talent, how is it that Metallica has written far better songs? Like any company, it starts at the top. James is just a better front man than Dave. Period. Much MUCH better singer. Better song writer. Better lyricist. Lars has a big part in the song writing, too. It's like this...there are those people who are incredible at playing their instrument, but don't know how to CREATE music. Obviously, Dave and Megadeth know how to create good music, but that's the unseen skill and talent that James and Lars (with influence from Cliff and Jason) has above them, and it's carried them to being a much better overall band.

Both bands are amazing for different reasons and are very talented with what they do. If you want another...more direct comparison between the two, listen to The Four Horsemen and Mechanix. Same riff (written by Dave) in both songs, but presented in very different styles.

to make this fair ya need to listen to complete songs and not just melodies. There is a lot more to all these songs then melody... gotta take into account sounds of leads voice, lyrics, message, solos, drums, base and such. I personally love both bands but think overall Metallica takes the crown in this battle... but not by much honestly.

This dude that's playing the riffs is DEFINITELY more of a Megadeth fan.. His guitar sound on the Megadeth side is way cleaner than when he plays the Metallica riffs, which shouldn't be.. Maybe he couldn't reproduce that unique Metallica crunch sound.. I love both bands, btw..
First, you're not comparing Metallica to Megadeth, you're comparing some random dude playing their music. While he's good he's not on their level and with Metallica being far more complex and intricate he didn't do them justice. Second, he stuck to Metallica's radio hits because if he skipped them the pseudo fans would cry fowl so had to ignore so many killer tracks where as with Megadeth they had fewer hits so he had the option to pick from less radio played tracks. Third, you can't compare Metallica to Megadeth at all. They just aren't in the same category. Metallica is an intricate symphony of metal and Megadeth is a piece of metal designed to bash your face in. One isn't better than the other, they are just too different and what someone likes better is a matter of opinion. Do you want to stand up and rock out with a massive crowd as legends written in the pages of history or do you want to run headfirst into a screaming crowd with your own screaming crowd at your side barrelling forward until there's nothing left. Both paths are equally epic, it just depends how you want to get there.
Good effort man! But the battle vid you reacted to, was deeply flawed.. They should've.. 1. Not chosen any newer sub par stuff. First four albums from both, ONLY! 2. Only compare/battle riffs that are similar to each other, both in style and skill level, as well as record to record. I.e. Metallicas first record vs Megadeth first and so on. But this could, or perhaps should be a separate vid, coz it might be hard to make a fair "vs vid" where the goal is to crown the overall winner, if one compares the two bands, record by record for each round.. But even so, Megadeth wins hands down with a good margin. That however does not mean that Metallica is bad or subpar at all. No they are awesome, or rather, *WERE* awesome. Megadeth just had quite a bit more speed and skill. I'd also say Metallicas lyrics are more poetic, melodic and presents a "grander story" overall in their nature. While Megadeth is poetic as well, yet more intellectual, technical, a bit edgy, direct hitting, personal and political to quite some degree. Metallica feels more like a big arean band like U2, though only in their apoach and feel, not their type of music obviously. Megadeth on the other hand is as mentioned, much more technical, pure hardcore thrash dedicated-fan-base, in their appeal. And I'm obviously still only comparing and talking about the old days here.. the first four albums. Coz those are the only ones that really counts in my book, since both bands sharply and suddenly transitioned after that to some kind of half-half soooft rooock mashup with thrash and hints of deathmetal?? Anyhow.. they weren't pure thrash anymore and it soon spiraled out of control. That's my opinion anyway.. have at it folks!

like others have said, this guy did some of Metallica's least interesting songs, paired up against Megadeth's best songs. Here's the difference between the two groups. Megadeth probably overall has more interesting riffs, and more technical musicians across the board, even though Metallica's no slouches. But, Metallica's more creative in their song writing, and the vision they have for the song. James' voice and pace / cadence is far superior to Dave's. Dave's singing takes away from some songs, and at it's best, is neutral. James' singing actually carries some songs, and, almost always, enhances the songs. So, if you view music only as RIFFS, then Megadeth likely is your preferred band. I just like music, and care only about which songs sound good, with no bias. Because of that, Metallica is superior. But, Megadeth has had some very good songs, and it has turned out for the best for all of us that Dave was kicked out of Metallica. They could expand and grow more without him, and he could go do and create his own band with his vision.
These aren't Megadeth's best songs at all. How much familiarity do you even have with the band? Almost every album they've made is densely packed with not only complex, but infectious and catchy riffs that blow Metallica out of the water. Seriously. Dave Mustaine has more amazing riffs than he knows what to do with, sometimes even burying them behind solos. Until you've heard more than Megadeth's like two or three most popular albums, this take doesn't really hold up at all.

Along with FAR FAR superior vocals and equal or better lyrics. What gets me do annoyed with takes like yours is this belief that megadeth is the most talented band on earth. From a technical standpoint, there are MANY bands who are far more talented technicians, far more creative than megadeth, and Metallica, but megadeth fans only point to the technical prowess of megadeth over Metallica. As much as I enjoy both bands, and leaving my own personal preference for Metallica’s lyrics and vocals aside, yes Megadeth has phenomenal riffs. There is no denying the talent there, and I would not have listened to them for more years than I care to admit since I’d certainly date myself, if they sucked. But I also made a wtf face several times in this video wondering why the weakest examples of Metallica’s riffs were put up against some real bang out of the gate on the Megadeth side. The only problem I see here it's the type of riffs and rhythm. There are thrash vs groove. You can not throw random riffs like that to find a champion. You can not have a match of soccer vs baseball. It has to be the same approach so one can say who's best!

from a guitar player standpoint megadeth is way better, but from a variety and songwriting viewpoint, metallica holds up nicer, both are very good but in all honesty theyre very different, metallica has beauty in simplicity while megadeth tends to ocercomplicate things but that is ironically part of the reason why i like them... theres also the fact nick menzas drumming can make any riff sound 10x better than what it actually is
This was an unfair video, the guy was biased and used songs that don’t compete with each other. If you’re going to compete with mega deaths best songs then put Metallica’s best songs up against it for example holy wars riff vs master of puppets that would make a hole lot more sense. Otherwise this video is just stroking megadeth fans egos.
I think we all should know that the player on those videos of Met vs Meg, although he may be a good guitar player, he's not able to play complex megadeth songs or riffs, He just simply can not... Thats a fact that we must count. Metallica riffs are way easier I just said.
IMO Megadeth writes more creative riffs, but Metallica generally writes better songs overall, their lyrics are more polished, and they have a better singer, so that's why they became a much bigger success.

I first listen to Metallica and most of their albums but that's when I first started listening to metal but after discovering Megadeth and having over 100 songs of Megadeth from 5+ albums in a playlist I can definitely say Dave just immediately became my favorite guitarist ever to grace my ears.

Okay so I have been into metal for years now since the age of 16 and now I am damn near 50. I have been a fan of Metallica every since I heard Cliff Burton on that bass solo years ago before he died. However my view point on Metallica since then has changed especially with that Nabster B.S. years ago. I remember coming home from school one day and turning on the t.v. and a soap was on and I was hearing Metallica's Enter Sandman so I turned the t.v. off. The music stopped so then I found out that Metallica's song was on the damn soap, that's where I knew Metallica really sold out to the massive. Megadeth on the other had has never came near of selling out and Dave Mustang is just the pure shit (pardon my French lol). Now the story as I know it (the battle you are talking about) steams from an issue with James and Dave. From what I remember James had a puppy and Dave didn't like the dog and they some argument that lead Dave leaving the band. Some do say that it was a spot light issue and how Dave wanted the spot light but since James was there it was all on him. Not to say these stories are but they are what I heard years ago. Now if you really want to compare Metallica to Megadeath listen to The Four Horsemen vs Mechanix and the reason is because both songs uses same riffs and beats. I guess that's because Dave owned the rights to the music he helped create. But I conclude Metallica is my choice when they were young Metallica but Megadeth has never came down to the massive. A couple of things. 1) Dave was kicked out of the band because he was extremely violent and just a complete ass when he was wasted. He was bringing them down. That's why he was kicked out. 2) Metallica grew substantially after Dave left. Proof he was holding them back. 3) I understand why you and other metal heads think Metallica 'sold out', but there's actually more proof to suggest they were just doing what they wanted to do, which is the opposite of selling out. Just because their music took more a more mainstream route doesn't mean they were doing it for that purpose. It could have simply been their own desire to change as musicians. They proved that with 'Fade to Black' , 'Sanitarium', 'Ktulu', 'Orion', 'One'...that they weren't going to be told what to write, even if it pissed off many of their fans.

I like both bands but musicianship-wise, Hetfield is hard to beat. His bottomless well of creativity behind such a variety of riffs, from hard rock to thrash, hasn't been matched yet. I'm not convinced Mustaine would be able to make tunes like Sad but true, Unforgiven trilogy, My friend of misery, Eye of the beholder, Orion, Sanitarium, Fixxer, Outlaw torn, Bleeding me etc. That's not to put Dave down but that's where James has the edge

Their drummer better than Lars at PLAYING...Friedman was better than Kirk in solos, and Dave's riffs are a little more complex than James'. However, that alone doesn't make a better song. So, with more talent, how is it that Metallica has written far better songs? Like any company, it starts at the top. James is just a better front man than Dave. Period. Much MUCH better singer. Better song writer. Better lyricist. Lars has a big part in the song writing, too. It's like this...there are those people who are incredible at playing their instrument, but don't know how to CREATE music. Obviously, Dave and Megadeth know how to create good music, but that's the unseen skill and talent that James and Lars (with influence from Cliff and Jason) has above them, and it's carried them to being a much better overall band.

To be fair the songs weren’t matched up all that well and some of the riffs were a little off. Both bands are amazing for different reasons and are very talented with what they do. If you want another...more direct comparison between the two, listen to The Four Horsemen and Mechanix. Same riff (written by Dave) in both songs, but presented in very different styles.
Exactly. I've been trying to use that example for a while now. Dave wrote awesome riffs in that song, and then his vision and singing took it down, whereas Metallica's vision and singing elevated it.

Dave wrote the sweet home middle riff, but only at the request of Lars and James. That means it wasn't his idea. It was theirs. And it's a great addition. That along with the other breakdown that Dave had NOTHING to do with are 2 reasons 4 horsemen is far superior. That came from Metallica vision for the song.

to make this fair ya need to listen to complete songs and not just melodies. There is a lot more to all these songs then melody... gotta take into account sounds of leads voice, lyrics, message, solos, drums, base and such. I personally love both bands but think overall Metallica takes the crown in this battle... but not by much honestly.

First, you're not comparing Metallica to Megadeth, you're comparing some random dude playing their music. While he's good he's not on their level and with Metallica being far more complex and intricate he didn't do them justice. Second, he stuck to Metallica's radio hits because if he skipped them the pseudo fans would cry fowl so had to ignore so many killer tracks where as with Megadeth they had fewer hits so he had the option to pick from less radio played tracks. Third, you can't compare Metallica to Megadeth at all. They just aren't in the same category. Metallica is an intricate symphony of metal and Megadeth is a piece of metal designed to bash your face in. One isn't better than the other, they are just too different and what someone likes better is a matter of opinion. Do you want to stand up and rock out with a massive crowd as legends written in the pages of history or do you want to run headfirst into a screaming crowd with your own screaming crowd at your side barrelling forward until there's nothing left. Both paths are equally epic, it just depends how you want to get there.

1. Not chosen any newer sub par stuff. First four albums from both, ONLY!
2. Only compare/battle riffs that are similar to each other, both in style and skill level, as well as record to record. I.e. Metallicas first record vs Megadeth first and so on. But this could, or perhaps should be a separate vid, coz it might be hard to make a fair "vs vid" where the goal is to crown the overall winner, if one compares the two bands, record by record for each round..
But even so, Megadeth wins hands down with a good margin. That however does not mean that Metallica is bad or subpar at all. No they are awesome, or rather, *WERE* awesome. Megadeth just had quite a bit more speed and skill. I'd also say Metallicas lyrics are more poetic, melodic and presents a "grander story" overall in their nature. While Megadeth is poetic as well, yet more intellectual, technical, a bit edgy, direct hitting, personal and political to quite some degree. Metallica feels more like a big arean band like U2, though only in their apoach and feel, not their type of music obviously. Megadeth on the other hand is as mentioned, much more technical, pure hardcore thrash dedicated-fan-base, in their appeal. And I'm obviously still only comparing and talking about the old days here.. the first four albums. Coz those are the only ones that really counts in my book, since both bands sharply and suddenly transitioned after that to some kind of half-half soooft rooock mashup with thrash and hints of deathmetal?? Anyhow.. they weren't pure thrash anymore and it soon spiraled out of control. That's my opinion anyway.. have at it folks!

like others have said, this guy did some of Metallica's least interesting songs, paired up against Megadeth's best songs. Here's the difference between the two groups. Megadeth probably overall has more interesting riffs, and more technical musicians across the board, even though Metallica's no slouches. But, Metallica's more creative in their song writing, and the vision they have for the song. James' voice and pace / cadence is far superior to Dave's. Dave's singing takes away from some songs, and at it's best, is neutral. James' singing actually carries some songs, and, almost always, enhances the songs. So, if you view music only as RIFFS, then Megadeth likely is your preferred band. I just like music, and care only about which songs sound good, with no bias. Because of that, Metallica is superior. But, Megadeth has had some very good songs, and it has turned out for the best for all of us that Dave was kicked out of Metallica. They could expand and grow more without him, and he could go do and create his own band with his vision.
These aren't Megadeth's best songs at all. How much familiarity do you even have with the band? Almost every album they've made is densely packed with not only complex, but infectious and catchy riffs that blow Metallica out of the water. Seriously. Dave Mustaine has more amazing riffs than he knows what to do with, sometimes even burying them behind solos. Until you've heard more than Megadeth's like two or three most popular albums, this take doesn't really hold up at all.

They are not in the same stratosphere as Metallica best. And like I've said...its not about riffs that make Metallica better. Its full song composition and vision. Along with FAR FAR superior vocals and equal or better lyrics. What gets me do annoyed with takes like yours is this belief that megadeth is the most talented band on earth. From a technical standpoint, there are MANY bands who are far more talented technicians, far more creative than megadeth, and Metallica, but megadeth fans only point to the technical prowess of megadeth over Metallica. But it's not about technical prowess only. It's about making songs. Metallica makes better songs. Period.

As much as I enjoy both bands, and leaving my own personal preference for Metallica’s lyrics and vocals aside, yes Megadeth has phenomenal riffs. There is no denying the talent there, and I would not have listened to them for more years than I care to admit since I’d certainly date myself, if they sucked. But I also made a wtf face several times in this video wondering why the weakest examples of Metallica’s riffs were put up against some real bang out of the gate on the Megadeth side. Not that I think you were wrong in your opinions based on the comparisons given, because you weren’t. Mustaine is literally the GOAT of the riff and Metallicas best stuff is always gonna be left out because its either a deep cut like Freyed Ends of Sanity or a Mustaine riff like Ride the Lightning.
