@@four1ne it... it kind of is. maybe not in the same way as other Saiyans, but the extents to which he'd take a fight, just for the thrill of it, even at others' expense - make that statement, at the very least, not entirely inaccurate.
Goku never saw Gohan's rage boosts really, he was healing on Namek when Gohan beat the crap out of Frieza. Gohan didn't fight any androids either. Goku saw Gohan damage Raditz but that was the only time he saw it. He knew Gohan was very powerful especially in the chamber but yeah, Gohan was never put on the front line like this nor did he expect to fight Cell
Goku has the heart of a warrior, but he seems to only be able to analyze people physically, emotionally, or morally, without considering the psychological aspect of fighters. I mean, yes, he viewed Frieza as a violent, cruel, megalomaniac. But, him not being able to see Gohan’s passive nature when it comes to fighting, shows he probably didn’t know Gohan that well. At least up till now. He probably just assumed his son would have the same personality as him, but Gohan’s passive nature not to escalate things may be from Chichi’s side. He may have gotten Goku’s fighting prowess, but his values and nature seem to stem more from Chichi.

Mere moments after meeting him, he threw the 3 year old Gohan into a mountain and watched him adapt. Since then, Gohan has personally taken on Ricoome, Vegeta, and Frieza. Obviously they found him to be amusing, but these threats were pretty severe for a child
Those events prepared him for this, assuming that each one of those challengers had more in store than Goku's opponents during his childhood. Goku was correct in his assessment that Gohan has been handling himself with the same zest as the rest of the Z crew. Which is like a minor keeping pace with a high intensity construction crew
Just because Gohan has to apply himself to the situation doesn't make his handling any less stringent than the others. He just doesn't have the wherewithal to be extra athletic or signature in his approach

Dude Piccolo went ham on Goku for not protecting his son. Piccolo was straight going to die for Gohan like a real dad. Thk goodness Gohan's balls dropped this day because Goku was standing in faith that his son was the Messiah almost to soon.
I'm inclined to disagree on the "faith" part. Over confidence, definitely, but Goku KNEW Gohan at that time was a lot stronger than he was. While yes, Goku made a mistake on how Gohan feels about fighting, it's not like he didn't have reason to believe that Gohan didn't like it.

So yes, Goku KNEW Gohan was stronger than all the Z fighters.

You mean toughen the boy up and make him both reliable and independent? Goku allowed ChiChi to make Gohan soft, by focusing solely on studying, despite the constant world ending potential threats out there, like Piccolo. The kid was scared of his own shadow before Piccolo came into the picture..
@Xana You know what's weird about the line that Goku uses, saying "I'll be harder on you than Piccolo was"? Nothing in the story really displays that. Sure he pushed Gohan to get stronger, but Piccolo completely had to work on Gohan from scratch. He realized that Gohan was too soft, so he left Gohan to fend for himself for months (though he kept a watchful eye and helped unbeknownst to Gohan) in the wilderness as a child. That made Gohan not only physically but mentally tougher as well. Then we see Piccolo train him how to fight and he was unrelenting. Hitting Gohan into the water. Gohan begging him to helping out, Piccolo helping out of the water, only to hit him with a seven hit combo. Gohan holding on to a cliff with one hand, only for Piccolo to step on it, making him fall 100s of feet to the ground. To me that doesn't compare to Goku's training, were he was having fun training up a sparring partner that could push himself, while cooking big meals for both of them. And while I'm not on the whole "Goku was a bad father" talking point. It seems to me that Piccolo was just as big of an influence on Gohan (if not more) than Goku was. He taught Gohan how to stand up for himself, how to fly, how to manipulate ki and more importantly Gohan had as much of an influence on Piccolo that Piccolo did on Gohan.
The English dubbing of piccolo is just awesome.

I think this is the first time Goku has ever really seen Gohan suffer since Raditz saga. Every other time, its been Piccolo (and Krillin actually) who has been present to witness Gohan's latent potential.
Gohan only gets strong when someone is critically wounded or is dead.

This hits hard cause as a child, Gohan said he wanted to be a scholar, but he will obviously put his life on the line for those he cares about. Even piccolo says Gohan's words because he expressed this in the tine chamber when trying to be a super saiyan. Gohan says "dad I'm not like you" for believing and having access to his power to fight. While he had amnesia, Goku had the enjoyment of fighting because it made him happy, and it was his saiyan blood. Gohan literally just wants to be an earthling and, in the future, as we know, has a loving family of his own. That eveb makes it different from krillian being a fighter, father, and police officer. Gohan just doesn't want to but knows he needs to. Sorry, it's a long rant, just this is deep. It's different from kid trunks and Goten exposures 😢

This moment was to show how Piccolo felt during the final tournament in OG Dragon ball.
It showed that Goku is not stupid, but the people around him been holding back info from him to he nice.
You really have to feel bad for Gohan. He had the greatest fighting potential from the time he was small child but fighting has always been traumatic for him and he has no interest in it. To make the matters worse Goku is the greatest fighter in the world and wants Gohan to surpass him.

Duh Goku knows this but this isn’t a matter of wanting to Goku and the rest of the world NEED Gohan to fight because Goku is NOT strong enough to beat Cell Gohan is the only one capable of beating him and Goku knows this.

People need to understand that this doesn’t make Goku a bad father outright, but he came to the realization that he had been one this saga. It finally occurred to him that Gohan really _wasn’t_ a fighter, that he wasn’t made for combat despite all of that latent potential. Goku was confident that his son would get the hang of it eventually and that all he needed was the proper support and encouragement, and he did succeed in that aspect, but he didn’t fully understand how he was, albeit inadvertently, being selfish.

Fact: Goku never doubted Gohan's power and that's what pushed him to become what he is now

People say that Goku is a bad father or call him stupid, but this goes to show that's not the case. Goku literally doesnt understand things like this. He's socially aloof, and needed someone as smart as Piccolo to explain things to him. The thought of Gohan not wanting to be a father never even crossed his mind.

Watching cell come back from that, Goku knew gohans latent power was the only thing that could put cell down. If gohan didnt awaken his power, and SSJ1 gohan blew him away and cell regeneratedwith a saiyan zenkai boost,then he wouldnt even get the chance for ssj2. The senzu bean was the only way to push gohan into that corner.

You see i view it like this; Goku's not intentionally a bad Dad... He was just raised differently from most humans... *And* he's wired differently due to his pure Saiyan blood. The Saiyan's pov says that all ppl love fighting because that's what they love... It's similar to how the humans of the show keep offering to cook something tasty for Piccolo even though he says he doesn't need to eat.... It's our instinct to offer food. And it's Goku's/the Pure Saiyan's instinct that everyone, including children, love battle.
That being said.... Piccolo is probably still a better role model for Gohan due to their morals and thoughts on battle being actually pretty similar. They don't crave it but aren't afraid to fight when a fight is needed. And when they do fight they (usually) try not to extend the fight longer than necessary unless they're trying to do something intentionally. (Gohan f*cked up with Cell when he finally started beating him but I think that's when he learned to not extend the fight more than necessary.)
I don't blame Gohan one bit for telling everyone to piss off when he was toying with Cell later in this fight and they were all pleading with him to end it.
Gohan was angry for a lot of different reasons at that point.

I believe the problem at this point was that Goku ignorantly thought that Gohan knew how to just let out this power if he had told him or found out how he can just use it he would've used it automatically.
Goku is just a simpleton that only thinks of one thing at a time.
He was thinking of the competition while for Gohan and Piccolo this was a battle to save the Earth.

I think we all forget that, in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Gohan was telling Goku to push him further beyond his limits in order to get stronger. Gohan was the one doing this and Goku always told him how strong he was, the only thing he didn't know was that he was stronger than Goku.
So, in actual fact, Gohan actually did have that thirst for battle and desire to become stronger. Goku did spend a year in the time chamber with Gohan as well in preparation for this so he should know Gohan pretty well

Back then as a kid when I watched this for the first time I was hoping that Piccolo Daimao would resurface in furious anger and take over Kamiccolo's soul after seeing Gohan suffer like that only to charge Cell with the evilness and determination that he once had in his heart, but this time using that power to save his son, Gohan. Imagine Piccolo going Daimao after screaming in pain and then: *Daimao* comes to save Gohan
Piccolo had made the same mistake to force out of Gohan the fighter and died for it. Fighting comes in reality natural to Gohan, but he was forced a lot to do it.
