  • One of our most frequently asked questions is “Can you make longer Rifle Rods for short rifles?” In this video, Todd explains why we do not make a longer Rifle Rod, while giving some great tips on what to do with ARs and other modern rifles.
We do not make Rifle Rods longer than 16”. There are multiple reasons for this. For versatility’s sake, we make the Rifle Rod to fit in as small as a 22 caliber barrel. To protect the rifling of the barrel, the Rifle Rod needs to be made from plastic. If we made a 22 caliber plastic rod any longer, it would lose rigidity in the length and not be the secure storage system that you need for your firearms.
Todd demonstrates multiple solutions to storing ARs, small rifles and other modern firearms.
Keep the shelf above the guns as low as possible.
    - Place a shelf below the guns to boost them up closer to the shelf above.
    - Use an ammo can, box of ammo or other container to boost up a few shorter rifles.
    - Create a custom bench that fits your safe and gun needs to stack the ARs on.
All of the options above will give extra storage space above or below your rifles - WIN, WIN! - while keeping your firearms securely stored.

I understand wanting to keep the rods plastic, but what about aluminum core with plastic coating? That would solve my problems with short rifles. It would allow the rod to be plastic, but greatly increase the stability of the rods, which would allow the rods to be made longer. I think most gun enthusiasts are like me and have long guns of all lengths. I don’t have room in my safe to lower a shelf, add a shelf below my weapons, or even use an ammo box. Thanks to Gun Storage my safe that was designed for 36 guns is now holding over 50 long guns and several handguns. And, I arrange my safe with investment guns in the back and then work my way forward arranged by how much I use each weapon. Putting guns of similar size together will not work for me. I tried it a couple times. Thanks!

Thanks, Russ. I hear ya! However, it's already expensive to make these from reinforced plastic, if we were to add the costs of aluminum rods and an over-molding process we would be entering the realm of "no one will pay this much for rods". Is it perfect? Maybe not. Is it WAY better than the alternative? Absofreakinlutely! There is a balance; stiff and flexible. Remember... More wasted space = Fewer guns. It's that simple.
